Are Mexican And U.S. Workers Complements Or Substitutes?, Raymond Robertson Oct 2018

Are Mexican And U.S. Workers Complements Or Substitutes?, Raymond Robertson

Mission Foods Texas-Mexico Center Research

Fears of NAFTA in the United States were largely based on the belief that Mexicans and U.S. workers were substitutes: lowering barriers would allow competing products into the United States and investment outflows that would cause U.S. workers to lose their jobs to Mexico. While this may have been true when NAFTA first went into effect, subsequent production specialization between Mexico and the United States may suggest that Mexican and U.S. workers are now complements. In particular, NAFTA may have induced production restructuring throughout North America to generate integrated value chains in which workers in the three NAFTA countries work …

Impact Of Observed And Controlled Water Intake On Reticulorumen Temperature In Lactating Dairy Cattle, Melissa C. Cantor, Joao H. C. Costa, Jeffrey M. Bewley Oct 2018

Impact Of Observed And Controlled Water Intake On Reticulorumen Temperature In Lactating Dairy Cattle, Melissa C. Cantor, Joao H. C. Costa, Jeffrey M. Bewley

Animal and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Dairy precision technologies helps producers monitor individual animals. Reticulorumen temperature boluses are a way to monitor core body temperature; however, factors such as water intake affects reticulorumen temperature. This research determined the effect of natural water intake and a controlled water drench on reticulorumen temperature (RT) in dairy cattle. In observational study part 1, tie- stall cows (n = 4) with RT transponders were observed for natural water intake (recorded by in line water meters) for 48 h. In experiment part 2, a randomized Latin square design with cows (n = 12) restricted on feed for 4 h, …

A Comparative Analysis Of Non-Invasive Exploration Techniques Lidar Vs. Aerial Photography – Kincaid Mounds Archaeological Site, Austin Valentine, Austin Valentine Jr.

Student Scholarship & Creative Works

KINCAID MOUNDS - A Comparative Analysis of Non-invasive Exploration Techniques is a journal of my efforts to conduct non-invasive site investigations at the Kincaid Mounds Archaeological site in Southern Illinois. Through the utilization of tools such as; drones, photography, satellite imaging, light distance and ranging, and powerful analysis software, I will demonstrate a number of useful techniques which one can utilize to conduct independent site investigations without disturbing a sites landscape or structural integrity. Thus, illustrating differences between those techniques and pointing out their strengths and weaknesses in their various applications.

During this journey, I will also venture into the …

The Sekujam Language Of West Kalimantan (Indonesia), James T. Collins, Herpanus Herpanus Oct 2018

The Sekujam Language Of West Kalimantan (Indonesia), James T. Collins, Herpanus Herpanus

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Almost two hundred years ago, O. van Kessel identified a language group based on a characteristic sound change that yielded -ai in the final position of some words (Van Kessel 1850: 166); Hudson (1970) named this group “Ibanic” after the Iban language widely spoken in Sarawak. Of the numerous members of the Ibanic branch of Malayic, perhaps the Sekujam language is the least known. Although Sujarni et al. (2008: 282-285) provided information about the location and traditions of the Sekujam ethnic group, there is very little information about the language. Based on available colonial and contemporary sources, this essay provides …

Design And Application Of Task-Specific Gumbos And Nanogumbos For Sensing And Separation, Mingyan Cong Oct 2018

Design And Application Of Task-Specific Gumbos And Nanogumbos For Sensing And Separation, Mingyan Cong

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The work presented in this dissertation employs task-specific materials for sensing and protein separation applications. These materials were derived from a group of uniform materials based on organic salts (GUMBOS). GUMBOS are organic salts similar to ionic liquids, but have melting points ranging from 25 to 250 °C. As with ionic liquids, the properties of GUMBOS can be easily tuned by changing the counter-ion. Thus, task-specific GUMBOS can be designed and prepared with properties that are beneficial for applications in sensing or protein separation. In this dissertation, the selective responsive behavior of a series of GUMBOS and nanomaterials derived from …

Regular Sound Change; The Evidence Of A Single Example, Alexander Adelaar Oct 2018

Regular Sound Change; The Evidence Of A Single Example, Alexander Adelaar

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The Neogrammarians of the Leipzig School introduced the principle that sound changes are regular and that this regularity is without exceptions. At least as a working hypothesis, this principle has remained the basis of the comparative method up to this day. In the first part of this paper, I give a short account of how historical linguists have defended this principle and have dealt with apparent counter evidence. In the second part, I explore if a sound change can be regular if it is attested in one instance only. I conclude that it is, provided that the concomitant phonetic (and …

Hyperhomocysteinemia As A Risk Factor For Vascular Contributions To Cognitive Impairment And Dementia, Brittani R. Price, Donna M. Wilcock, Erica M. Weekman Oct 2018

Hyperhomocysteinemia As A Risk Factor For Vascular Contributions To Cognitive Impairment And Dementia, Brittani R. Price, Donna M. Wilcock, Erica M. Weekman

Physiology Faculty Publications

Behind only Alzheimer’s disease, vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID) is the second most common cause of dementia, affecting roughly 10–40% of dementia patients. While there is no cure for VCID, several risk factors for VCID, such as diabetes, hypertension, and stroke, have been identified. Elevated plasma levels of homocysteine, termed hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy), are a major, yet underrecognized, risk factor for VCID. B vitamin deficiency, which is the most common cause of HHcy, is common in the elderly. With B vitamin supplementation being a relatively safe and inexpensive therapeutic, the treatment of HHcy-induced VCID would seem straightforward; however, …

Caught In The Flash: Visual Subjects Of American Imperialism At The Battle Of Caloocan, Elizabeth Spaeth Oct 2018

Caught In The Flash: Visual Subjects Of American Imperialism At The Battle Of Caloocan, Elizabeth Spaeth

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

This paper focuses on the revolutionary use of photojournalism in Leslie’s Weekly and Harper’s Weekly from 1899 to 1901 during the Philippine-American War, in particular at the Battle of Caloocan. I discuss the context of visual journalism and social realism from the Civil War to the 1890s as well as the shift from caricature illustrations to realism in photography and articles. I trace the “commodity racism” involved in American consumerism during the Philippine-American War that paralleled the voyeuristic consumption of the Filipino dead and the development of a gendered and classed American nationalism. As American culture shifted more towards a …

How To Read Dance: Making Sense Of Contemporary Dance Choreography Through The Wifibody.Ph 2018 Choreography Competition In Manila, Regina Salvaña Bautista M.A., B.M. Oct 2018

How To Read Dance: Making Sense Of Contemporary Dance Choreography Through The Wifibody.Ph 2018 Choreography Competition In Manila, Regina Salvaña Bautista M.A., B.M.

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

Excerpt: To read implies the ability to interpret, process, and make meaning out of what is seen (or experienced). But to know that we see what we see, we need to know that we have the inherent human capacity to understand (think, digest, make sense of) abstract action and translate it to objective words, thoughts, and ideas. To be able to articulate what we see in dance, we need to know how we can read dance.

Sound-Changes And Loanwords In Sungai Penuh Kerinci, Hein Steinhauer Oct 2018

Sound-Changes And Loanwords In Sungai Penuh Kerinci, Hein Steinhauer

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In this paper I shall (re)analyse the historical development of the Sungai Penuh variety of Kerinci in terms of sound-changes, with special attention to forms which deviate from the more common patterns. Data for this study have been taken from the stencilled version of Amir Hakim Usman’s Kerinci-Indonesian dictionary (1976) with handwritten annotations by the author, the late David John Prentice, and myself, the result of elicitation sessions with the author in 1977 in Leiden. Some additional data derived from Usman 1988 and from an interview with the author in 1999.
