The Impacts Of Energy Development On Agricultural Land Values In North-Central West Virginia, Adama Sileye Warr
The Impacts Of Energy Development On Agricultural Land Values In North-Central West Virginia, Adama Sileye Warr
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study presents an empirical model that explains the impact of energy development activities on agricultural land values in north-central West Virginia. Based on the methodology and the data description, seven different models (linear and logs) are estimated and the results are analyzed to understand the contributions of each energy variable used in the models to the overall values of farmlands. We have examined 311 parcel-level sales of farmlands in 16 counties in the north-central of the state of West Virginia from January 2013 to July 2016. The results suggest that the selected model is statistically different from zero (prob …

Examining The Impact And Influence Of The Leisure Science Literature, Mat D. Duerden, Michael B. Edwards, Michael C. Goates, Justin Dyer
Faculty Publications
This study explored the impact and influence of the leisure sciences literature through an analysis of highly cited articles. Discriminant function analysis identified whether articles had more exclusive impact inside or outside the field. Research themes and methodologies were examined based on these classifications. Results indicate articles with the greatest impact within the leisure literature tended to be quantitative studies drawing upon survey data and non-experimental designs focused on general leisure and outdoor/forest recreation. Articles with the greatest impact outside the leisure literature were more recent and focused on place attachment, psychological motivation, or community parks and recreation and used …
Judicial Intervention As Judicial Restraint, Guy-Uriel Charles, Luis E. Fuentes-Rohwer
Judicial Intervention As Judicial Restraint, Guy-Uriel Charles, Luis E. Fuentes-Rohwer

This paper examines the Court's decision in Gil v. Whitford. It advances two claims. First, it provides a comprehensive account of the Court's skepticism of judicial supervision of democratic politics, an account that we call the narrative of nonintervention. It situates Gill within that account and argues that the Court's reluctance to intervene is a function of the Court's institutional calculus that it ought to protect its legitimacy and institutional capital when it engages in what look like political fights. Second, the paper provides an instrumentalist account for judicial intervention. It argues that the Court should intervene to prevent partisan …
State Public-Law Litigation In An Age Of Polarization, Margaret H. Lemos, Ernest A. Young
State Public-Law Litigation In An Age Of Polarization, Margaret H. Lemos, Ernest A. Young
Faculty Scholarship
Public-law litigation by state governments plays an increasingly prominent role in American governance. Although public lawsuits by state governments designed to challenge the validity or shape the content of national policy are not new, such suits have increased in number and salience over the last few decades — especially since the tobacco litigation of the late 1990s. Under the Obama and Trump Administrations, such suits have taken on a particularly partisan cast; “red” states have challenged the Affordable Care Act and President Obama’s immigration orders, for example, and “blue” states have challenged President Trump’s travel bans and attempts to roll …

Environmental and Sustainability Studies Undergraduate Projects
The Healthy Eating and Sustainable Lifestyle group focuses on educating students and community members and directing individuals to making healthier dietary choices. We plan to achieve this goal through the Healthy Transition Day that will target this problem, intended to educate and involve students and community members around Grand Valley. This idea involves incorporationing the SAP into GVSU’s transition week. With Healthy Transition Day, students have the ability to tour the farm and learn how to get involved during their time at Grand Valley.
We have conceptualized two additional solutions that would take more time, resources, and planning in order …

Pollinator Awareness Program, Sarrah Adamy, Sarah Daniels, Kailey Keenan-Whittemore, Marissa Visser
Environmental and Sustainability Studies Undergraduate Projects
The Pollinator Awareness Program is an initiative evoked by the Sustainable Agriculture Project (SAP) of Grand Valley State University to increase student involvement through the lens of pollinator education and habitat creation. The program includes educational components that teach students about what pollinators exist, what they do for us as well as delicate ecosystems, and how we can contribute to their survival. Through this program, students and community members gain the opportunity to plant and maintain the pollinator gardens at the SAP as well as participate in make-and-take events that encourage them to improve pollinator habitats near their own homes.

Delay Discounting And Cannabinoid Enzyme Inhibitors, Devin Andrew Galdieri
Delay Discounting And Cannabinoid Enzyme Inhibitors, Devin Andrew Galdieri
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Delay discounting is a measure of impulsive choice that is correlated with maladaptive behavior and psychological disorders. Disruptions to serotonin and dopamine pathways can cause changes in delay discounting, as can lesions to the prefrontal cortex and nucleus accumbens. The endocannabinoid system modulates other neurotransmitter systems, including dopamine and serotonin pathways. Cannabinoid receptors type 1 are found in relatively high concentrations in the nucleus accumbens and the prefrontal cortex. These receptors are activated by endogenous cannabinoids, which are synthesized on demand and broken down by catabolic enzymes. The action of these enzymes can be inhibited by a class of drugs …
Does Observational Learning Influence Spatial Pattern Learning?, Matthew Bruster
Does Observational Learning Influence Spatial Pattern Learning?, Matthew Bruster
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Previous studies have indicated both human and non-human animals come under control of a hidden spatial pattern when engaged in an open field search task, and rats appear to exhibit social learning in such tasks through the influence of a conspecific on their search behavior. Although human participants appear to perform similarly in both real-world and virtual environment versions of a spatial pattern search task, evidence from human participants for social learning in such a task remains lacking. The current experiments tested the influence of social learning (observational learning) on human performance in a spatial pattern learning task within a …

Schmick’S Frontier: Native American And Moravian Community Building In Colonial Pennsylvania, 1753-1765, Megan Trent Mcgee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation explores community building during times of violence. I argue that the intense violence in Colonial Pennsylvania during the 1750s and 1760s did not prevent the Moravians from building multi-ethnic communities, even as other groups (French, British, and Iroquois) pursuing their own political gains sought to tear such communities apart. The project focuses on community building and cohesion during a time of violence. Both the Moravians and the Native Americans were marginalized outsiders in mid-eighteenth-century Pennsylvania. The Moravians were outsiders because they were Europeans who failed to integrate culturally with their European neighbors. The Delaware, Mohicans, and smaller Native …
Effects Of Reinforcement Rate On The Aversive Function Of Timeout From Positive Reinforcement, Cory Whirtley
Effects Of Reinforcement Rate On The Aversive Function Of Timeout From Positive Reinforcement, Cory Whirtley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although the use of timeout from positive reinforcement is widespread and has been shown to be an effective punisher in clinical settings, the factors responsible for its effectiveness are not fully understood. The present experiment was designed to evaluate one of these factors, the reinforcement rate underway during periods of time-in. Rats’ lever pressing was maintained on variable-interval schedules of food reinforcement in a multiple schedule with two components. In one component, no timeouts were delivered. In the other component, when a variable-ratio schedule was met, lever presses were followed by a 30-s timeout during which a tone sounded, the …

An Interspecies Investigation Of Thyroid Plasma Hormone Concentrations, Histology, And Gene Expression, Emily A. Underwood
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A high prevalence of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOCs) has raised concerns as to the health and fitness of fish and wildlife. It is not well understood to what extent existing contaminants, many with continuing inflows into the environment, may impact fish populations. This study provides an initial characterization of thyroid endocrine-related effects in two indigenous fish species sampled from Great Lakes AOCs. Biomonitoring was conducted on a pelagic, top predator species, smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) and benthic, omnivorous brown bullhead (Ameiurus nebulosus) at 7 sites in spring and fall …

The United States has been at the forefront of marine resource stewardship since the 1970s when Federal officials began to implement a series of national policies aimed at the conservation and management of public trust resources in the ocean. Beginning with the establishment of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in 1970, soon followed by several pieces of landmark legislation, this era marked the start of a continuing effort to integrate ecosystem science with marine resource management. Among the most important bipartisan legacies of this effort has been the steady expansion of marine managed areas in U.S. coastal and ocean …

Analysis Of Dimensionless Scaling Relationships For Rotating Free Flight Bodies, Shawn A. Smearcheck
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Though more obscure than traditional flight analysis, the tendency for a rigid body to flutter or tumble in flight during unstable conditions has been analyzed through physical experiments since the 1960s. In more recent years, similar conditions have been subjected to numerical simulation to further understand the effects of dimensionless properties on unstable body motion. It is important to understand dimensionless scaling relationships to compare properties of a body to that of a scaled model or for adjusting data when manufacturing limitations exist. For example, if the geometry of a scaled object could easily be manufactured, within tolerance, but material …

Watching You Watching Me: Lateral Surveillance In Singapore, Yan Song Lee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Historically, top-down surveillance -- surveillance from the state and other organizations -- has dominated social life, but not anymore. Technological advances drove down the price of surveillance equipment which aided in the proliferation of devices such as dashboard cameras. The widespread use of affordable surveillance equipment gave rise to the phenomenon of lateral surveillance, whereby laypersons can employ surveillance techniques to monitor individuals around them. The Singapore metropolis provides an excellent example with the ubiquitous use of dashboard cameras for cars today. In this research, I focus on Singaporean rideshare drivers who are simultaneously subjected to traditional forms of top-down …
Shalom And Moral Imagination For Business Technologists, Jason M. Stansbury
Shalom And Moral Imagination For Business Technologists, Jason M. Stansbury
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
This essay addresses the problem “What are the ethical implications from a biblical perspective as technological changes reshape stakeholder relationships?” It characterizes the effects of technological change upon stakeholder relationships in microeconomic terms, so that various technologies can be understood in terms of their implications. It then describes the Christian ethical concept of “shalom,” and explores some of its implications for stakeholder relationships with biblical grounding. It next explores the microeconomic stakeholder implications of technological change in terms of shalom. It finally discusses moral imagination as a practical technique for understanding the ethical implications of a novel situation, envisioning practical …
Fine-Scale Hydrodynamic Metrics Underlying Predator Occupancy Patterns In Tidal Stream Environments, Lilian Lieber, Smith Wam Nimmo, James J. Waggitt, Louise Kregting
Fine-Scale Hydrodynamic Metrics Underlying Predator Occupancy Patterns In Tidal Stream Environments, Lilian Lieber, Smith Wam Nimmo, James J. Waggitt, Louise Kregting
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Whilst the development of the tidal stream industry will help meet marine renewable energy (MRE) targets, the potential impacts on mobile marine predators using these highly dynamic environments need consideration. Environmental impact assessments (EIAs) required for potential MRE sites generally involve site-specific animal density estimates obtained from lengthy and costly surveys. Recent studies indicate that whilst large-scale tidal forcing is predictable, local hydrodynamics are variable and often result in spatio-temporal patchiness of marine predators. Therefore, understanding how fine-scale hydrodynamics influence animal distribution patterns could inform the placing of devices to reduce collision and displacement risks. Quantifying distributions requires animal at-sea …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Marine litter is a global challenge and society plays an important role via lifestyles and behaviour, including policy support. We analysed public perceptions of marine litter and contributing factors, using data from 1133 respondents across 16 European countries. People reported high levels of concern about marine litter, and the vast majority (95%) reported seeing litter when visiting the coast. The problem was attributed to product and packaging design and behaviour rather than lack of facilities or accidental loss of items. Retailers, industry and government were perceived as most responsible, but also least motivated and competent to reduce marine litter, whereas …

Turning The Tide On Trash: Empowering European Educators And School Students To Tackle Marine Litter, Bonny L. Hartley, Sabine Pahl, Matthew Holland, Iro Alampei, Joana M. Veiga, Richard C. Thompson
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Marine litter is a global environmental problem, and working with educators and school students has much potential to facilitate greater public understanding of the solutions and to enable action. This research examined two new educational activities designed to empower European educators and school students to engage with the topic of marine litter, particularly focusing on behavior and on known determinants of behavior rather than knowledge alone. In Study 1, 120 educators participated in an online training course on marine litter, and completed a pre- and post-course questionnaire to assess change. After participating in the course, educators felt significantly more skillful …

All contemporary general anaesthetics have been convincingly shown to produce neurotoxic effects in at least some experimental animal models, and many of the underlying mechanisms have been identified.1 Whilst the human relevance of these observations is still under intense scrutiny, the elaboration of protective strategies along with the development of new ‘non-toxic’ anaesthetic drug regimens have been identified as rational research directions to alleviate potential neurotoxicity.2 In this edition of the British Journal of Anaesthesia, Atluri and colleagues3 report preliminary animal experiments for a novel neurosteroid hypnotic. They describe the compound as ‘safe’ in comparison to ketamine, and suggest that …
