Between the foundation of Constantinople as capital of the eastern half of the Roman Empire in 330 CE and its sack by the Fourth Crusade in 1204 CE, the Byzantine Empire underwent a full cycle from political-economic stability, through rural insecurity and agrarian decline, and back to renewed prosperity. These stages plausibly correspond to the phases of over-extension (K), subsequent release (Ω) and recovery (α) of the Adaptive Cycle in Socio-Ecological Systems. Here we track and partly quantify the consequences of those changes in different regions of Anatolia, firstly for rural settlement (via regional archaeological surveys) and secondly for land …

Pan-Mediterranean Holocene Vegetation And Land-Cover Dynamics From Synthesised Pollen Data, Jessie Woodbridge, Neil Roberts, Ralph Fyfe

More Faculty of Science and Engineering Research

AimThe Mediterranean is characterized by diverse and spatially heterogeneous mosaic landscapes. Within this study, a cluster analysis-based method is developed for the classification of Mediterranean vegetation types based on modern and fossil pollen datasets. The application of this approach to multiple pollen records spanning the Mediterranean region has allowed temporal variations in vegetation dynamics to be explored throughout the Holocene. We ask how far back stable baseline vegetation communities can be identified in the pollen record, and whether those types considered to be characteristic of the Mediterranean landscapes have been present in the past as well as at the present.LocationThe …

From Rural Citizenship To The Rural Citizen: Farming, Dementia And Networks Of Care, Claire Kelly, Richard Yarwood Jan 2018

From Rural Citizenship To The Rural Citizen: Farming, Dementia And Networks Of Care, Claire Kelly, Richard Yarwood

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Citizenship is gaining increased attention in the social sciences but has been under-utilised in rural studies. In this paper we argue that greater attention should be paid to social aspects of citizenship in order to understand participation in daily life and society. In doing so, emphasis needs to be placed on the rural citizen and how he or she engages with different communities across different scales. To explore these ideas we draw upon a case study of farmers living with dementia in Devon, UK. We use concepts of citizenship to explore their rights to services, the effectiveness of active citizenship …

A New Use Of Β-Ala-Lys (Amca) As A Transport Reporter For Pept1 And Pept2 In Renal Brush Border Membrane Vesicles From The Outer Cortex And Outer Medulla., Othman A. Alghamdi, Nicola King, Graham L. Jones, Pierre D.J. Moens

School of Biomedical Sciences

Integral membrane proteins PEPT1 and PEPT2 are essential for reabsorbing almost all hydrolysed or filtered di- and tripeptides alongside a wide range of peptidomimetic drugs in the kidney. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential use of the fluorophore-conjugated dipeptide β-Ala-Lys (AMCA) as a biosensor for measuring peptide transport activity in brush border membrane vesicles isolated from the outer cortex (BBMV-OC) and outer medulla (BBMV-OM) (representing PEPT1 and PEPT2 respectively). The vesicles were isolated using a dual magnesium precipitation and centrifugation technique. Intravesicular fluorescence accumulation was measured after incubating extra-vesicular media at pH6.6 and different concentrations of …

Pliocene Stratigraphic Paleobiology In Tuscany And The Fossil Record Of Marine Megafauna, S Dominici, S Danise, M Benvenuti

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Tuscany has a rich Pliocene record of marine megafauna (MM), including mysticetes, odontocetes, sirenians and seals among the mammals, and six orders of sharks among the elasmobranchs. This is reviewed with respect to paleogeography and sequence-stratigraphy in six different basins. Conditions at the ancient seafloor are explored by means of sedimentary facies analysis, taphonomy and multivariate techniques applied to a large quantitative dataset of benthic molluscs. MM is rare or absent in most basins during the Zanclean, except in one basin, and most abundant in Piacenzian deposits in all six basins. MM occurs preferentially in fine-grained, shelfal highstand-deposits of small-scale …

Programming Gate-Based Hardware Quantum Computers For Music, A Kirke Jan 2018

Programming Gate-Based Hardware Quantum Computers For Music, A Kirke

School of Art, Design and Architecture

There have been significant attempts previously to use the equations of quantum mechanics for generating sound, and to sonify simulated quantum processes. For new forms of computation to be utilized in computer music, eventually hardware must be utilized. This has rarely happened with quantum computer music. One reason for this is that it is currently not easy to get access to such hardware. A second is that the hardware available requires some understanding of quantum computing theory. This paper moves forward the process by utilizing two hardware quantum computation systems: IBMQASM v1.1 and a D-Wave 2X. It also introduces the …

Building Theory Of Agri-Food Supply Chain Resilience Using Total Interpretive Structural Modelling And Micmac Analysis, Guoqing Zhao, Shaofeng Liu, Sebastian Elgueta, Carmen Lopez, Haiyan Lu

Plymouth Business School

Agri-food supply chains are inherent with some unique characteristics and that can be easily disrupted compared with other supply chains. Therefore, supply chain resilience factors are relevant and can be taken into consideration. In this paper an attempt has been made to build a theoretical framework of resilience factors in agri-food supply chains with the help of total interpretive structural modelling and matrix of cross impact multiplications applied to classification analysis. The results of the total interpretive structural modelling demonstrate that leadership plays a vital role in enhancing the resilience of the agri-food supply chain. Furthermore, the matrix of cross …

© 2017 International Society of Nephrology. A key feature of glomerular diseases such as crescentic glomerulonephritis and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis is the activation, migration and proliferation of parietal epithelial cells. CD44-positive activated parietal epithelial cells have been identified in proliferative cellular lesions in glomerular disease. However, it remains unknown whether CD44-positive parietal epithelial cells contribute to the pathogenesis of scarring glomerular diseases. Here, we evaluated this in experimental crescentic glomerulonephritis and the transgenic anti-Thy1.1 model for collapsing focal segmental glomerulosclerosis in CD44-deficient (cd44-/-) and wild type mice. For both models albuminuria was significantly lower in cd44-/- compared to wild type …

Community Resilience In Rural China: The Case Of Hu Village, Sichuan Province, G Wilson, Z Hu, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Building on conceptual frameworks to assess community resilience developed by Emery and Flora (2006) and Kelly et al. (2015), this study analyses the resilience of Hu village (Sichuan, China). The resilience of the village is assessed in the face of multiple and complex slow- and fast onset anthropogenic disturbances, especially the impacts of globalisation and modernisation, which have substantially transformed Chinese society. Hu village is typical for a rural community in transition affected by industrialisation, deagrarianisation, counter-urbanisation and changing stakeholder expectations and opportunities. This has been accompanied by agricultural depopulation, outmigration, increasing non-farm employment, declining agricultural incomes, and associated social …

The Future Trajectory Of Adverse Outcome Pathways: A Commentary, F Sewell, N Gellatly, M Beaumont, N Burden, R Currie, Haan L De, Th Hutchinson, M Jacobs, C Mahony, I Malcomber, J Mehta, G Whale, I Kimber

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The advent of adverse outcome pathways (AOPs) has provided a new lexicon for description of mechanistic toxicology, and a renewed enthusiasm for exploring modes of action resulting in adverse health and environmental effects. In addition, AOPs have been used successfully as a framework for the design and development of non-animal approaches to toxicity testing. Although the value of AOPs is widely recognised, there remain challenges and opportunities associated with their use in practise. The purpose of this article is to consider specifically how the future trajectory of AOPs may provide a basis for addressing some of those challenges and opportunities.

The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals have been established to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. Delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals will require a healthy and productive environment. An understanding of the impacts of chemicals which can negatively impact environmental health is therefore essential to the delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals. However, current research on and regulation of chemicals in the environment tend to take a simplistic view and do not account for the complexity of the real world, which inhibits the way we manage chemicals. There is therefore an urgent need for a …

We conducted a cross-sectional study to detect trypanosome infections of horses and donkeys in the Riyadh Province of Saudi Arabia. DNA was extracted from blood samples collected from 368 horses and 142 donkeys, and subjected to universal first ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1)-PCR followed by Trypanosoma evansi species-specific RoTat1.2-PCR. The universal ITS1-PCR revealed T. evansi infection in horses ( n = 12; 3.3%) and donkeys ( n = 4; 2.8%). There was no significant effect of sex or age on the prevalence of trypanosomiasis in horses or donkeys. Application of the RoTat1.2-PCR revealed that the RoTat1.2 VSG gene was …
