Assessment Of Kenya's Capacity To Effectively Prepare For And Respond To Oil Spill Incidents, Stellamaris Ndeve Muthike
World Maritime University Dissertations
This dissertation assesses Kenya’s capacity to effectively prepare and respond to oil spill incidents and compares it to recommended international practice. The study is based on analysis of available data and questionnaires administered to personnel involved in oil spill preparedness and response in Kenya as well as International Organizations involved in oil spill response and training. Globally sea borne trade has been increasing and this has reflected in Kenya where the country has embarked on expanding its shipping industry. This exposes the country to the risk of oil spill and further compounded by busy tanker route through the territorial sea …

World Maritime University Dissertations
This dissertation aims to design a new monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) component that may be suitable for Peruvian artisanal fishing. When it refers to suitable, it means that it should be low-cost and compatible with other MCS systems to improve the fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing. In this regard, through the triangulation among methods including the content analysis as well as interviews and questionnaires to the primary stakeholders of the Peruvian artisanal fishing, it was found that there is a direct connection between a suitable MCS and the fulfilment of the target 14.b of the Sustainable …

Evaluating The Need For Ocean Literacy In South Africa, Eugene Nyman
World Maritime University Dissertations
Pressures on the ocean are increasing due to anthropogenic activities, which has a caused decline in the health of the ocean. This has adversely affected the services and goods that populations are able to derive from the ocean. Various international agreements and partnerships, have been adopted to stem the human pressures on the ocean. However, the decline in the health of the ocean, has persisted. Ocean literacy is summarised by UNESCO (2017) as an individual being able to understand the influence they have on the ocean, and the ocean’s influence on their life. The concept has been developed with the …

Fishing in Cameroon is one of the main economic activities and lifeline of the coastal communities in the South West Region of Cameroon, especially the artisanal fishing which is mostly traditional and subsistence. Cameroon fisheries are either fully exploited or are already in the critical state of over-exploitation by foreigners and local communities. However, illegal fishing and aggressive fishing practices in the marine environment has led to over exploitation of the fisheries, mangroves and environmental deterioration. There is an urgent need to develop and introduce effective and efficient sustainable approaches, to the exploitation and management of Cameroon’s fisheries and other …

Closing The Academia-Practice Gap In Corporate Sustainability Management Research: Challenges And Bridges, Tim Breitbarth, David M. Herold
Closing The Academia-Practice Gap In Corporate Sustainability Management Research: Challenges And Bridges, Tim Breitbarth, David M. Herold
Journal of Environmental Sustainability
While corporate sustainability management research in universities has contributed to a greater understanding of sustainability, its current form has limited capacity to make a meaningful impact outside of academia. When it comes to the structures and concepts on which corporate sustainability management research is built, previous research has focused on inadequate principles and has been driven by a system that neglects solutions for real-word problems. This paper identifies four critical challenges that need to be addressed to reach the point of linking corporate sustainability management research with science and industry. This article argues that the normative foundation of universities together …

Altering Vapor Pressure Of Mimic Pheromone 2-Phenoxyethanol Affects Efficacy Of Trail-Following Behavior In Reticulitermes Sp., Daniel Teoli
Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review
Over the past several decades, extensive observation and analysis of termite behavior has taken place within the scientific community. One of the topics at the forefront of pertinent research involves exploring the behavioral intricacies of these small eusocial insects (Witting 2007), as well as their specialized reliance on certain chemical secretions [or pheromones] to remain biologically successful within their respective native environments (Matsuura et al. 2010).
Consumption Of Different Caloric Sugar-Sweetened Solutions Alters Tissue Fatty Acid Composition And Lipid Metabolism In Young Female Sprague-Dawley Rats, Kaitlin Mock, Stephanie N. Altman, Joseph C. Gigliotti, Levi Berg, Janet C. Tou
Consumption Of Different Caloric Sugar-Sweetened Solutions Alters Tissue Fatty Acid Composition And Lipid Metabolism In Young Female Sprague-Dawley Rats, Kaitlin Mock, Stephanie N. Altman, Joseph C. Gigliotti, Levi Berg, Janet C. Tou
Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review
High carbohydrate intake has been reported to contribute to obesity by promoting de novo lipogenesis and metabolic disorders by altering tissue fatty acid composition. The type of caloric sweeteners added to beverages has changed with some sugars suggested to be more lipogenic. Therefore, the study objective was to determine the effect of consuming different types of caloric sugar-sweetened solutions on tissue fatty acid composition and risk of metabolic disorders. Growing female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned (n=7-8 rats/group) to drink water or water sweetened with 13% (w/v) glucose, sucrose, fructose or high fructose corn syrup 55 (HFCS-55). The rats were …
Effects Of Fixed-Ratio Requirements On Delay Discounting In Rats, Meagan Follett
Effects Of Fixed-Ratio Requirements On Delay Discounting In Rats, Meagan Follett
Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review
Research on impulsive behavior is often designed to examine the choice between a smaller, more immediate reinforcer versus a larger, more delayed one (e.g., Anderson & Woolverton 2005; Diller, Saunders, & Anderson 2008; Logue 1988). When the delays to both the larger and smaller reinforcers are short, the larger reinforcer is usually chosen. As the delay to the larger reinforcer increases, choice for that reinforcer decreases and switches to choice for the smaller, more immediate reinforcer. This decrease in choice for the larger reinforcer as delay increases is known as delay discounting, as the value of the larger reinforcer is …
What Comic Books And Political Cartoons Reveal About Mexican History, Carolyn Brewer
What Comic Books And Political Cartoons Reveal About Mexican History, Carolyn Brewer
Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review
History and popular culture have played off one another for centuries. While comic books might certainly seem to be a low-class form of entertainment, lacking the authority of a history textbook, they nonetheless allow the readers to engage in history as they have otherwise never experienced it. Rather than reading descriptions of what happened when the Spanish landed in Mexico, one may read The Cartoon History of the Modern World or Exploring the Americas to see clothing of the time-period as well as how some of the historical characters may have felt. By using comic books and political cartoons, one …

Literature has the unique ability to create an environment where one can address specific issues and hard questions in a comfortable way and at a relevant level. Children’s literature specifically plays a valuable role at a crucial time in the development of children and through this is privy to being used to explore the issues that most children deal with. In reference to the importance of children’s literature acting as a mirror for children, Sims Bishop stated that “literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection, we can see our own lives and experiences …

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Libraries have been using Omeka.net both for online exhibits and as a portal for access to selected special collections, including Omaha Histories and the Queer Omaha Archives. This presentation highlights the best practices for metadata, workflows, and exhibit-based storytelling using the hosted Omeka.net service. UNO Libraries Archives & Special Collections has created metadata best practices for the Dublin Core metadata in Omeka.net, including a guide for community partners who might be willing to create their own descriptive metadata. The presenters have experimented with batch loading metadata into Omeka.net using the CSV Import plugin …
