Effect Of Green Tea And Its Bioactive Compound, (-)- Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate, On Weight Reduction And On Cytochrome P450 / Ng Mei Fong, Mei Fong Ng
Student Works (2010-2019)
Obesity is presently considered to be an epidemic, affecting more than 10% of adult population worldwide since the 19th century. However, gene regulations that are involved in obesity are not clearly understood. Green tea (Camelia sinensis) and its main component, (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) have been claimed to have anti-obese property. In order to understand the genes that are involved in obesity, changes in gene expression during obesity development in a mouse model was examined. We aimed to understand how green tea extract and EGCG affect gene regulation during obesity development and since they have been claimed to possess anti-obese property, we …

Bioengineered Collagen Graft For Urethral Reconstruction In Animal Models / Ganes Vythilingam, Vythilingam Ganes
Student Works (2010-2019)
With the increase incidence of hypospadias and urethral stricture, the need for a surgically efficient and cost effective graft to reconstruct the urethra has become paramount, especially in view of the complications arising from presently used technologies. Current available surgical techniques require harvesting of grafts from autologous sites resulting in complications. In addition, lack of tissue availability and added patient discomfort further limits present surgical options. Cell based approaches have shown progress in this area. However, these have been associated with high costs and regulatory hurdles. An acellular graft using relatively inexpensive materials that has been previously approved by regulatory …

Expertise Scientifique Et Lien De Causalité Dans Le Cadre Du Contentieux Climatique: Le Point De Vue De La Doctrine Américaine, Michael Burger
Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

It can be difficult to help struggling kindergarten students learn pre-reading skills with limited resources. Trained community volunteers can make an impact on student literacy learning while forming positive relationships with students as they deliver a prescribed curriculum. This project explores the value of Professional Learning Communities (PLC), school and district support, the use of collaboration time, intervention, pre-reading essential standards, community support and PLC self-assessment. A handbook designed to assist in organizing effective interventions for the teacher or tutor is presented. This manual includes the role of professional learning communities in literacy tutoring; in developing essential standards, assessments and …
Exploring The Ligand-Dependent Conformational Ensemble Of Pparγ: More Than A Mousetrap, Ian Michael Chrisman
Exploring The Ligand-Dependent Conformational Ensemble Of Pparγ: More Than A Mousetrap, Ian Michael Chrisman
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The nuclear receptor PPARγ is a lipid-dependent transcription factor which regulates many pathways in lipid metabolism. Due to functions in adipogenesis, glucose uptake and insulin sensitivity it has been a target of type II diabetes mellitus therapeutics since the 1990s. Due to a poorly understood anti-inflammatory pathway it is also an emerging target in neurodegenerative disease. Despite extensive research the majority of the structural mechanism underlying the regulation of this proteins’ function is poorly understood. It is often thought that nuclear receptors function in a simple two-state model with defined on and off states. This model only considers one region …
Nano-Pulse Stimulation Ablates Orthotopic Rat Hepatocellular Carcinoma And Induces Innate And Adaptive Memory Immune Mechanisms That Prevent Recurrence, Brittany P. Lassiter, Siqi Guo, Stephen J. Beebe
Nano-Pulse Stimulation Ablates Orthotopic Rat Hepatocellular Carcinoma And Induces Innate And Adaptive Memory Immune Mechanisms That Prevent Recurrence, Brittany P. Lassiter, Siqi Guo, Stephen J. Beebe
Bioelectrics Publications
Nano-pulse stimulation (NPS), previously called nsPEFs, induced a vaccine-like effect after ablation of orthotopic N1-S1 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), protecting rats from subsequent challenges with N1-S1 cells. To determine immunity, immune cell phenotypes were analyzed in naïve, treated and protected rats. NPS provides a positive, post-ablation immuno-therapeutic outcome by alleviating immunosuppressive T regulatory cells (Treg) in the tumor microenvironment (TME), allowing dendritic cell influx and inducing dynamic changes in natural killer cells (NKs), NKT-cells and T-lymphocytes in blood, spleen and liver. NPS induced specific increases in NKs and NKT-cells expressing CD8 and activation receptors CD314-NKG2D and CD161 (NK1.1) in the TME …

Cell Fragmentation And Permeabilization By A 1 Ns Pulse Driven Triple-Point Electrode, Enbo Yang, Joy Li, Michael Cho, Shu Xiao
Bioelectrics Publications
Ultrashort electric pulses (ns-ps) are useful in gaining understanding as to how pulsed electric fields act upon biological cells, but the electric field intensity to induce biological responses is typically higher than longer pulses and therefore a high voltage ultrashort pulse generator is required. To deliver 1 ns pulses with sufficient electric field but at a relatively low voltage, we used a glass-encapsulated tungsten wire triple-point electrode (TPE) at the interface among glass, tungsten wire, and water when it is immersed in water. A high electric field (2MV/cm) can be created when pulses are applied. However, such a high electric …

Nano-Pulse Stimulation For The Treatment Of Pancreatic Cancer And The Changes In Immune Profile, Sigi Guo, Niculina I. Burcus, James Hornef, Yu Jing, Chunqi Jiang, Richard Heller, Stephen J. Beebe
Bioelectrics Publications
A Pancreatic cancer is a notorious malignant neoplasm with an extremely poor prognosis. Current standard of care is rarely effective against late-stage pancreatic cancer. In this study, we assessed nanopulse stimulation (NPS) as a local treatment for pancreatic cancer in a syngeneic mouse Pan02 pancreatic cancer model and characterized corresponding changes in the immune profile. A single NPS treatment either achieved complete tumor regression or prolonged overall survival in animals with partial tumor regression. While this is very encouraging, we also explored if this local ablation effect could also result in immune stimulation, as was observed when NPS led to …

Enhanced Electric Pulse Technology For The Ablation Of Pancreatic Cancer, Siqi Guo, Niculina I. Burcus, Chelsea M. Edelblute, James Hornef, Chunqi Jiang, Karl Schoenbach, Richard Heller, Stephen J. Beebe
Bioelectrics Publications
Electric pulse based technology has been developed and studied as a non-thermal ablation method for local control of pancreatic cancer. Irreversible electroporation (IRE) has shown a significant survival benefit for local advanced pancreatic cancer in clinical trials. However, incomplete ablation with local recurrence and major complications limit the potential of this new technology. We have developed an integrated moderate heating electric pulse delivery system which consists of controllable tumor heating, multi-parameter monitoring and electric pulse delivery. The impedance of tumor is greatly decreased after moderate heating at 42°C for 1–2 min, which does not cause any cell death. Moderate heating …

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The purpose of this research was to conduct a needs assessment of a remote indigenous community, Santa María Zoogochi, Oaxaca, Mexico. The focus of the needs assessment was on the community’s concerns and suggested solutions to problems they identified. The focus on general community concerns allowed participants to identify immediate needs they found of importance. This research was conducted using the Concerns Report Method (CRM), which is a strategy associated with Participatory Action Research (PAR). This method facilitated community conversations and engaged the community in the research process by incorporating their concerns and potential solutions into a community plan of …
The Desert's Canary: A Narrative Examination Of The Socio-Political Role Of The Threatened Desert Tortoise, Halle Rayn Kohn
The Desert's Canary: A Narrative Examination Of The Socio-Political Role Of The Threatened Desert Tortoise, Halle Rayn Kohn
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Through story, personal experience is connected to broader meaning. The stories that individuals tell about a flagship species contribute not only to the animal’s role in conservation, but also to collective human imagination and culture. The purpose of this research is to reveal the roles (social, cultural, political, and ecological) that the desert tortoise plays in the California Desert, and to uncover how these roles are demonstrated through conservationist’s narratives. This study utilizes mixed qualitative methods with the goal of discovering why the Mojave Desert Tortoise (Gopherus agassizii), an iconic and threatened species, has particular significance within the …

The Influence Of Microclimate And Local Adaptation For A Climate-Sensitive Species (Aplodontia Rufa), Jennie K. Jones Scherbinski
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Climate change models and analyses predict a disproportionate impact on climatically sensitive species such as the mountain beaver (Aplodontia rufa). Mountain beavers have physiological constraints that limit their distribution to cool, moist climates. While mountain beavers have persisted through past periods of climate change, increasing temperature since the last glacial maximum is believed to have had a strong influence in reducing their range. This is particularly true for the Point Arena subspecies (A. r. nigra, “PAMB”), found towards the southwestern edge of their range on the coast of California. Here, I examined the climatic niche of …
Export Of Invertebrate Drift From Fishless Headwater Streams, Jonathan M. Hollis
Export Of Invertebrate Drift From Fishless Headwater Streams, Jonathan M. Hollis
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
An understanding of ecological linkages between headwater systems and downstream habitats is needed to enhance management practices for aquatic conservation. I quantified and described the export of invertebrate drift from fishless headwater streams to assess its potential importance to downstream populations of coastal cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki clarki) in the lower Klamath River in northern California. From June 2015 through April 2016, I sampled invertebrate drift in six fishless headwaters in the sub-basins of Tectah, Ah Pah, and Tarup creeks. Concurrently, I collected invertebrate drift and trout diet samples from adjoining fish-bearing streams. Drift export rates were lowest …
Isaiah 56, Abraham, And The Temple, Taylor Halverson
Isaiah 56, Abraham, And The Temple, Taylor Halverson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
In the days of the first Israelite temple, only certain individuals were allowed into the temple and sacrificial services; foreigners and eunuchs were excluded. However, in Isaiah 56:1–8, formerly excluded individuals are invited into the presence of God at the temple. This paper will explore how metaphorically connecting Isaiah’s words with Abraham, the eponymous father of the covenant faithful, may demonstrate that even the most unlikely candidates for the presence of God are like Abraham; they too will inherit the ancient covenants according to their faithfulness.

Williams
BYU Studies
In the United States, we automatically think of England as the great maritime nation on whose overseas possessions the sun never set. We also identify Spain as a great maritime power, whose American colonies, especially Mexico and Peru, produced immense wealth for the kingdom. However, we forget, or more likely never knew (because we were never taught), that it was Portugal that invented the ship and developed the maritime technology that allowed for the first open-sea travel during the European Age of Exploration, begun by Portugal in 1415 (fig. 1). It was Portugal that discovered more than two-thirds of the …

TSOS Interview Gallery
Jeanusnat’s father, who was chief of a Nigerian community, was murdered by an enemy community. The murderer intended to kill Jeanusnat and his mother as well, but they fled to neighboring Niger. There, Jeanusnat parted ways with his mother, who stayed at the church with a family, and Jeanusnat crossed into Libya in the back of a truck. But once in Libya, danger persisted. He was confronted by some robbers who stabbed him with a knife and beat him, leaving injuries on his legs and shoulder. In Tripoli, a man offered him temporary refuge, where Jeanusnat stayed until he decided …
Perfect Food: Perspectives On Consumer Perceptions Of Fresh Produce Quality, Caitlin Finlayson
Perfect Food: Perspectives On Consumer Perceptions Of Fresh Produce Quality, Caitlin Finlayson
Geography Articles
Over the past century, the global food system has largely shifted from a localized, decentralized agricultural model to more centralized, industrial food production system. Corresponding with this shift was a change in consumer preferences, an expectation for “perfect” fruits and vegetables that has contributed to a significant problem with wasted food. An alternative food system, aimed at providing locally-grown, sustainable produce has countered this model and has sought to reconnect consumers and producers. At the same time, this alternative model still exists within a larger agricultural system dominated by industrial production and standardization. This paper examines how the changes in …

For, By And About: Notes On A Sociology Of Black Liberation, Nina Johnson
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Works
This chapter discusses on the topic the twentieth-century work of black sociologists, highlight some contemporary thought on liberation sociology and the work of current sociologists from whom he might draw inspiration. Most sociologists author has encountered suggest by their own biography that from their earliest memories they has always been asking questions of the social world – the why and how questions that now animate their work and move the discipline forward had at one time been a curiosity, an endless fascination and a nuisance to adults. In laying out an argument for black sociology, Robert Staples illuminated the ways …

Genes For Membrane Transport Proteins: Not So Rare In Viruses, Timo Greiner, Anna Moroni, James L. Van Etten, Gerhard Thiel
James Van Etten Publications
Some viruses have genes encoding proteins with membrane transport functions. It is unknown if these types of proteins are rare or are common in viruses. In particular, the evolutionary origin of some of the viral genes is obscure, where other viral proteins have homologs in prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. We searched virus genomes in databases looking for transmembrane proteins with possible transport function. This effort led to the detection of 18 different types of putative membrane transport proteins indicating that they are not a rarity in viral genomes. The most abundant proteins are K+ channels. Their predicted structures vary between …

Size-Dependent Catalysis Of Chlorovirus Population Growth By A Messy Feeding Predator, John Delong, Zeina Al-Ameeli, Shelby Lyon, James L. Van Etten, David Dunigan
James Van Etten Publications
Many chloroviruses replicate in endosymbiotic zoochlorellae that are protected from infection by their symbiotic host. To reach the high virus concentrations that often occur in natural systems, a mechanism is needed to release zoochlorellae from their hosts. We demonstrate that the ciliate predator Didinium nasutum foraging on zoochlorellae-bearing Paramecium bursaria can release live zoochlorellae from the ruptured prey cell that can then be infected by chloroviruses. The catalysis process is very effective, yielding roughly 95% of the theoretical infectious virus yield as determined by sonication of P. bursaria. Chlorovirus activation is more effective with smaller Didinia, as larger …
