Therapeutic Cocktail Approach For Treatment Of Hyperhomocysteinemia In Alzheimer’S Disease, Michael Leon, Darrell Sawmiller, R. Douglas Shytle, Jun Tan

Neurosurgery and Brain Repair Faculty Publications

In the United States, Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, accompanied by substantial economic and emotional costs. During 2015, more than 15 million family members who provided care to AD patients had an estimated total cost of 221 billion dollars. Recent studies have shown that elevated total plasma levels of homocysteine (tHcy), a condition known as hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy), is a risk factor for AD. HHcy is associated with cognitive decline, brain atrophy, and dementia; enhances the vulnerability of neurons to oxidative injury; and damages the blood–brain barrier. Many therapeutic supplements containing vitamin B12 and folate have …

Human Cord Blood Serum-Derived App Α-Secretase Cleavage Activity Is Mediated By C1 Complement, Ahsan Habib, Darrell Sawmiller, Huayan Hou, Manasa Kanithi, Jun Tian, Jin Zeng, Dan Zi, Zhi-Xu He, Paul R. Sanberg, Jun Tan

Neurosurgery and Brain Repair Faculty Publications

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia in the elderly. In healthy individuals, amyloid precursor protein (APP) is cleaved by α-secretase, generating soluble α-amyloid precursor protein (sAPPα), which contributes neuroprotective functions in the neuronal environment. In contrast, in the neurodegenerative environment of AD patients, amyloid-β-peptide (Aβ) of either 40 or 42 residues are generated by increased activity of β- and γ-secretase. These proteins amalgamate in specific regions of the brain, which disrupts neuronal functions and leads to cognitive impairment. Human umbilical cord blood cells (HUCBC) have proven useful as potential immunomodulatory therapies in various models of neurodegenerative diseases, …

Nox2 Activity Is Required In Obesity-Mediated Alteration Of Bone Remodeling, Md Mizanur Rahman, Amina El Jamali, Ganesh V. Halade, Allal Ouhtit, Haissam Abou-Saleh, Gianfranco Pintus

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Despite increasing evidence suggesting a role for NADPH oxidases (Nox) in bone pathophysiology, whether Nox enzymes contribute to obesity-mediated bone remodeling remains to be clearly elucidated. Nox2 is one of the predominant Nox enzymes expressed in the bone marrow microenvironment and is a major source of ROS generation during inflammatory processes. It is also well recognized that a high-fat diet (HFD) induces obesity, which negatively impacts bone remodeling. In this work, we investigated the effect of Nox2 loss of function on obesity-mediated alteration of bone remodeling using wild-type (WT) and Nox2-knockout (KO) mice fed with a standard lab chow diet …

Auditory Opportunity And Visual Constraint Enabled The Evolution Of Echolocation In Bats, Jeneni Thiagavel, Clément Cechetto, Sharlene E. Santana Jan 2018

Auditory Opportunity And Visual Constraint Enabled The Evolution Of Echolocation In Bats, Jeneni Thiagavel, Clément Cechetto, Sharlene E. Santana

KIP Articles

Substantial evidence now supports the hypothesis that the common ancestor of bats was nocturnal and capable of both powered flight and laryngeal echolocation. This scenario entails a parallel sensory and biomechanical transition from a nonvolant, vision-reliant mammal to one capable of sonar and flight. Here we consider anatomical constraints and opportunities that led to a sonar rather than vision-based solution. We show that bats’ common ancestor had eyes too small to allow for successful aerial hawking of flying insects at night, but an auditory brain design sufficient to afford echolocation. Further, we find that among extant predatory bats (all of …

Quebec's Filiation Regime, The Roy Report'S Recommendations, And The 'Interest Of The Child', Régine Tremblay Jan 2018

Quebec's Filiation Regime, The Roy Report'S Recommendations, And The 'Interest Of The Child', Régine Tremblay

Canadian Journal of Family Law

This article describes Quebec’s filiation regime and explains some of the Roy Report’s recommendations to reform parent-child relationships in Quebec. While this report is unlikely to lead to legislative change, it represents an important insight into issues animating family law in Quebec today. The Roy Report anchors filiation and family law to the ‘interest of the child’, a notion likely different from the best interests of the child in common law. The article offers some critical and comparative analysis of current and proposed rules. It makes this lesser known area of Quebec civil law accessible in English and to common …

Distal Urogenital Anatomy Of Male Southern Coal Skinks, Plestiodon Anthracinus Pluvialis (Reptilia: Scincidae), Stanley E. Trauth

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

I investigated the morphology and histology of the distal urogenital anatomy of male southern coal skinks (Plestiodon anthracinus pluvialis) from reproductively active individuals collected in Arkansas in order to provide comparative information with recent studies on squamate urogenital anatomy. Specifically, I focused on the basic anatomy and positioning of posterior ducts in this skink, which included portions of the ductus deferens, the ampulla ductus deferentis, the sexual segment of the kidney, the ureter and collecting ducts, as well as aspects of the urodaeal chamber and urogenital papillae. I found a much reduced ampulla ductus deferentis comprising only 0.7 …

Aquatic Invertebrate Community Structure, Biological Condition, Habitat, And Water Quality At Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Missouri, 2005-2014, David E. Bowles, L. W. Morrison, J. T. Cribbs

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Ozark National Scenic Riverways (OZAR) was established to protect the corridor of the Current River and its major tributary, the Jacks Fork. The Current River is one of the few remaining free-flowing rivers in the U.S., with much of its base flow coming from several large springs. To assess the biological condition of these rivers, aquatic invertebrate community structure was monitored from 2005 to 2014. Benthic invertebrate samples and associated habitat and water quality data were collected from each of nine sampling sites using a Slack-Surber sampler. The Stream Condition Index (SCI), a multimetric index that incorporates taxa richness, EPT …

Organochloride Pesticides Present In Animal Fur, Soil, And Streambed In An Agricultural Region Of Southeastern Arkansas, Matthew E. Grilliot, John L. Hunt, Christopher G. Sims

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Animals in agricultural settings may be subject to bioaccumulation of toxins. For the last several years, we collected hair samples from bats and rodents in an agricultural area near Bayou Bartholomew in Drew County, Arkansas. Samples were submitted to the Center of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the University of Connecticut for wide-screen toxin analysis. Several of these samples contained measurable amounts of organochloride pesticides or their metabolites, including some that have been banned for decades, such as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and chlordane. In addition, we collected several samples of soil from within an agricultural field, from adjacent edge habitat, from …

Antibiotic Resistance: 5 Things To Know, Centers For Disease Control And Prevention

Guidelines, Recommendations, and Other Resources on Antimicrobial Resistance

Antibiotic resistance (AR) is one of the most urgent threats to public health. AR is a “one health” problem and connects to the health of people, animals, and the environment. Each year in the United States, at least 2.8 million people are infected with antibiotic-resistant germs—at least 35,000 die. This one-page informational resource provides five important facts about antibiotic resistance.

Mergers That Harm Sellers, C. Scott Hemphill, Nancy L. Rose Jan 2018

Mergers That Harm Sellers, C. Scott Hemphill, Nancy L. Rose

Faculty Articles

This Feature examines the antitrust treatment of mergers that harm sellers. We separately consider two mechanisms of harm, increased classical monopsony power and increased bargaining leverage. We show that lost upstream competition is an actionable harm to the competitive process. Our central claim is that harm to sellers in an input market is sufficient to support antitrust liability. We defend this conclusion against the contrary view that demonstrated harm to the merging firms' downstream purchasers or final consumers is an essential element of any antitrust claim. Nor is it necessary for plaintiffs to demonstrate a reduction in the input quantity …

Comment On Shaffer And Gao, Robert L. Howse Jan 2018

Comment On Shaffer And Gao, Robert L. Howse

Faculty Articles

Professors Shaffer and Gao, in their thoroughly researched article, challenge an assumption common in the early years of the new World Trade Organization (“WTO”) dispute settlement system: that the legalization of dispute settlement in the transformation of the General Agreement of Tariffs and Trade into the WTO would disadvantage states without strong traditions of domestic or international adversarial litigation. This was of particular concern because the legalization appeared to benefit, for example, the United States, the European Union, and Canada—all countries with considerable resources in international economic law and litigation, including resources “in house” within the government. As Shaffer and …

Loving's Legacy: Decriminalization And The Regulation Of Sex And Sexuality, Melissa Murray Jan 2018

Loving's Legacy: Decriminalization And The Regulation Of Sex And Sexuality, Melissa Murray

Faculty Articles

2017 marked the fiftieth anniversary of Loving v. Virginia, the landmark Supreme Court decision that invalidated bans on miscegenation and interracial marriages. In the years since Loving was decided, it remains a subject of intense scholarly debate and attention. The conventional wisdom suggests that the Court’s decision in Loving was hugely transformative— decriminalizing interracial marriages and relationships and removing the most pernicious legal barriers to such couplings. But other developments suggest otherwise. If we shift our lens from marriages to other areas of the law—child custody cases, for example—Loving’s legacy seems less rosy. In the years preceding and following Loving, …

If The Text Is Clear—Lexical Ordering In Statutory Interpretation, Adam M. Samaha Jan 2018

If The Text Is Clear—Lexical Ordering In Statutory Interpretation, Adam M. Samaha

Faculty Articles

Most courts now endorse lexical ordering for statutory cases. That is, a limited set of top-tier sources, if adequately clear, are supposed to establish statutory meaning. Lower-tier sources are held in reserve for close calls. Examples include legislative history and deference to agency positions, which often are demoted into tiebreaking roles. In fact, some such hierarchy of sources is approved by working majorities at the U.S. Supreme Court and more than forty state supreme courts. Although popular today, lexically ordered interpretation has risen and fallen before. Indeed, we should pause to reconsider whether these instructions are justified and whether judges …

Putting The Brakes On Consumer Driven Medicaid: The Failures And Harms Of Healthy Indiana Plan (Hip) 2.0, Sidney D. Watson Jan 2018

Putting The Brakes On Consumer Driven Medicaid: The Failures And Harms Of Healthy Indiana Plan (Hip) 2.0, Sidney D. Watson

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

In January 2015, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) granted Indiana a Section 1115 Demonstration Waiver to experiment with consumer driven Medicaid. The Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP) 2.0 combines a $2,500 high deductible with a Personal Responsibility and Wellness (POWER) Account, premiums, and copays. Described as “the most significant departure from traditional Medicaid ever approved,” Indiana claims that the POWER Account, the signature feature of HIP 2.0, is “similar to a health savings account (HSA)” and encourages members to be more cost-conscious consumers, helps familiarize members with how commercial health insurance works, and encourages continuous Medicaid enrollment. …

The Poet In Mourning: Jeffers After Una, Robert Zaller Jan 2018

The Poet In Mourning: Jeffers After Una, Robert Zaller

Jeffers Studies

This article explores the impact of Jeffers’ wife Una’s death on the work he completed between the date of her passing, 1 September 1950, and his own death in 1962. First, the history of Jeffers and Una’s relationship is recounted, including the important role Una played in shaping her husband’s public image. The article then turns to Jeffers’ late, post–1950 career, beginning with a prolonged period of grief-induced writer’s block. When Jeffers regained his ability to write verse, it was chiefly through the composition of “Hungerfield,” a distinctive mid-length narrative poem that bears the hallmarks of Jeffers’ earlier successful narratives …

The Uses Of History In The Anti-War Writing Of Robinson Jeffers And Ezra Pound, Richard Drake Jan 2018

The Uses Of History In The Anti-War Writing Of Robinson Jeffers And Ezra Pound, Richard Drake

Jeffers Studies

Although Robinson Jeffers and Ezra Pound both condemned American foreign policy during World War II, they did so for radically different reasons. Pound’s reading of American history led him to a pro-fascist position on the war, whereas Jeffers adhered to a standard isolationist argument, a mainstream political position during the interwar period. Comparing the ways in which the two poets thought about American history and American historians will help us to understand the cultural politics of both these literary masters and where they stood in the political context of their time. The article analyzes Pound’s notorious but illuminating Fascist radio …

Green Looks Good On You: The Rhetoric And Moral Identity Of Conscious Consumption Blogs, Abigail O'Brien Jan 2018

Green Looks Good On You: The Rhetoric And Moral Identity Of Conscious Consumption Blogs, Abigail O'Brien

Scripps Senior Theses

Conscious consumption blogs are at the center of a particular online community where eco-friendly products are popularized. Through the lens of these blogs, this paper analyzes discourse around identity, purchasing, sustainability, lifestyle, community, and activism, to investigate the forces at work in the conscious consumption movement and identify where there is a need for a shift towards a more political environmentalism. As an environmentalist strategy, conscious consumption disproportionately centers the consumer angle, constructing personal possessions as symbols of sustainability. Language analysis reveals strong individualistic messages about personal belief, preference, and benefit which overwhelm any sense of communal good. Instead, motivation …

A Numerical Analysis Of The Effects Of Flapping Wing Kinematics On The Aeroacoustics In Hovering Flight, Kabilan Nedunchezian Jan 2018

A Numerical Analysis Of The Effects Of Flapping Wing Kinematics On The Aeroacoustics In Hovering Flight, Kabilan Nedunchezian

Theses

Despite the recent interest in flapping wing aerodynamics, the aerodynamic sound generation mechanism of a flapping wing is inadequately understood. In this thesis, the interplay between the wing motion, resulting unsteady aerodynamics, and aeroacoustics of a flapping wing flyer is investigated. The wing motion is varied in terms of the flapping amplitude, pitching amplitude and the phase difference between flap and pitch. The unsteady flow around the flapping wing is numerically calculated using a well-validated Navier-Stokes equation solver. Acoustic pressures are computed using the Ffowcs- Williams and Hawkings equation in a three-dimensional space at varying distances from the wing. Two …

Children’S Oxygen Administration Strategies Trial (Coast): A Randomised Controlled Trial Of High Flow Versus Oxygen Versus Control In African Children With Severe Pneumonia, Kathryn Maitland, Sarah Kiguli, Robert Opoka, Peter Olupot-Olupot, Charles Engoru, Patricia Njuguna, Victor Bandika, Ayub Mpoya, Andrew Bush, Thomas Williams Jan 2018

Children’S Oxygen Administration Strategies Trial (Coast): A Randomised Controlled Trial Of High Flow Versus Oxygen Versus Control In African Children With Severe Pneumonia, Kathryn Maitland, Sarah Kiguli, Robert Opoka, Peter Olupot-Olupot, Charles Engoru, Patricia Njuguna, Victor Bandika, Ayub Mpoya, Andrew Bush, Thomas Williams

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

Background: In Africa, the clinical syndrome of pneumonia remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children in the post-neonatal period. This represents a significant burden on in-patient services. The targeted use of oxygen and simple, non-invasive methods of respiratory support may be a highly cost-effective means of improving outcome, but the optimal oxygen saturation threshold that results in benefit and the best strategy for delivery are yet to be tested in adequately powered randomised controlled trials. There is, however, an accumulating literature about the harms of oxygen therapy across a range of acute and emergency situations that …

Formulation Of A Repellent Lotion From Essential Oils Of Alpinia Galanga, Citrus Grandis And Citrus Aurantifolia Against Mosquitoes Aedes Aegypti And Culex Quinquefasciatus / Norashiqin Misni, Misni Norashiqin Jan 2018

Formulation Of A Repellent Lotion From Essential Oils Of Alpinia Galanga, Citrus Grandis And Citrus Aurantifolia Against Mosquitoes Aedes Aegypti And Culex Quinquefasciatus / Norashiqin Misni, Misni Norashiqin

Student Works (2010-2019)

Mosquitoes are one of the deadliest insects in the world. Their ability to carry and spread disease to humans causes millions of deaths every year. The use of mosquito repellent to protect oneself against mosquito bites is now common with plenty of repellent products available in the market. Plant-based repellent products gained much attention among users as they are believed to be safer compared to the synthetic repellent. Unfortunately, most of the plant-based repellent in the market were found to have short protection time and thus most likely to be unreliable to be considered as vector control tools. The development …

Identification Of Potential Receptors For Surface Proteins Of Toxoplasma Gondii In Humans / Lai Meng Yee, Meng Yee Lai

Student Works (2010-2019)

Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite that invades any nucleated cells in humans and other warm-blooded animals, with a great infection rate. Approximately 25% to 30% of the world’s human population is infected by T. gondii. Many proteins involved in T. gondii invasion have been characterized, and the contribution for parasite entry has been proposed. The identification of receptors or binding host proteins for surface antigens is an important activity throughout the study. A better understanding of the interplay between T. gondii and its hosts may provide a starting point for the discovery of novel therapeutics. …
