Worst Date, Kate, Zachary Grant Bess

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

Me: “What is the worst date you’ve ever been on?”

[Not skipping a beat] Ryker: “OH. Easy. Junior Ball. Her parents drove, we did not get dinner, I had to live off the winter mints they have on the table, and like the water…like you know at high school. You go to a high school dance and they have the little ‘Lifesaver Wintermint’ I had to live off of those and water, and a to-go box out of my friend’s trunk. [laughing] it was from his date, because of course THEY went to dinner.”

[interjecting] ME: Wait why did you …

Punchbuggy, Shannon Parks Dec 2017

Punchbuggy, Shannon Parks

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

So, Slug bug then. Learned it from my dad, and it’s an ongoing thing. There was no official start, there is no end. Everyone out east that I knew called it punchbuggy. Rules are that when you see a Volkswagen bug, you can hit someone and yell “slug bug.” Each bug is only used once. After that, you cannot, nor can anyone else, use that bug as an excuse to hit anyone. The exception is if the bug disappears from sight. If the bug disappears from sight it can be used again by anyone. This typically required the agreement of …

Winter Carnival Road Flares, Shannon Parks Dec 2017

Winter Carnival Road Flares, Shannon Parks

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

The Night Extravaganza is a display of daring, unusual stunts that typically leave spectators in awe. However, young children cannot be trusted to safely handle any pyrotechnics and instead are given glowsticks that are taped onto their bodies. At the age of 10 years old, children make the transition from beginner skiers to the competitive team. This transition is marked at Winter Carnival where the 10-year-old are entrusted to carry road flares down the mountain with the older kids, rather than glow sticks with the younger. The first time that I got to carry the flares it was terrifying to …

While hunting in Alaska we were abruptly woken up in the morning, just as the sun was starting to come up, barely light enough to see, by something outside of our tent in our camp getting into our stuff, so upon getting up grabbing my riffle, stepping outside of the tent still with one foot in the tent and one foot out of the tent standing there in my underwear, I shot a black bear who had come into our camp and was ravaging through our camp.
