Lethal And Sublethal Effects Of Novel Terrestrial Subsidies From An Invasive Shrub (Lonicera Maackii) On Stream Macroinvertebrates, Ryan W. Mcewan, Kevin W. Custer, Eric B. Borth, Sean D. Mahoney Dec 2017

Lethal And Sublethal Effects Of Novel Terrestrial Subsidies From An Invasive Shrub (Lonicera Maackii) On Stream Macroinvertebrates, Ryan W. Mcewan, Kevin W. Custer, Eric B. Borth, Sean D. Mahoney

Biology Faculty Publications

The biology of headwater streams is intimately linked to that of the surrounding terrestrial environment through organic matter subsidies. Lonicera maackii, an invasive shrub that is becoming abundant in headwater stream riparian areas, deposits substantial quantities of organic matter into the aquatic system. This organic material has allelopathic effects on terrestrial plants and insects, and a growing body of work suggests strong connections between L. maackii invasion and aquatic biota. Lonicera maackii deposits fruit and flowers in quantities and timings that are unique, and we tested the hypothesis that these subsidies would negatively affect survival and growth of laboratory-cultured …

Developing A Clinical Guideline With Embedded Algorithm For The Dosing Frequency Of Amoxicillin In Pediatric Group A-Beta Hemolytic Streptococcal Pharyngitis, Derek R. Doorn

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

Group A-beta hemolytic streptococcus (GABHS) pharyngitis, commonly called “strep throat,” is a commonly seen diagnosis in primary care--most commonly seen in individuals aged 5-15 years. Worldwide, 616 million estimated cases of GABHS pharyngitis occur annually. Rheumatic heart disease, which might be a consequence of GABHS pharyngitis, is estimated to cause about 6 million years of life lost annually. In spite of the wide prevalence of the disease, in the current literature, there are differing guidelines regarding treatment of GABHS pharyngitis, specifically with regard to the dosing frequency of amoxicillin. Amoxicillin is a frequently recommended and utilized drug in the treatment …

Stroke Reduction In Elderly Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Through Utilization Of An Anticoagulation Toolkit In The Primary Care Setting, Rachel J. Mommer Dec 2017

Stroke Reduction In Elderly Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Through Utilization Of An Anticoagulation Toolkit In The Primary Care Setting, Rachel J. Mommer

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

Patients, especially those older than 65-years-old, do not receive adequate assessment or management of atrial fibrillation, resulting in higher ischemic stroke rates and worse outcomes related to strokes. Oral anticoagulation is recommended indefinitely for patients with atrial fibrillation and a moderate to high risk of stroke; yet this population is not receiving oral anticoagulation consistently. Factors such as overexaggerated bleeding risk in the elderly, the lack of head-to-head studies comparing anticoagulants, cost, patient compliance, safety, lab monitoring, and reversal agents convolute the process of prescribing anticoagulation for atrial fibrillation. Variations exist with assessing bleeding risk and stroke risk for every …

Student Works (2010-2019)

Finding the sustainable, reliable and environmentally-friendly source of energy for remote areas is regarded as one of the major issues in the last decade. However, extending the national grid considered as economically impractical or sometimes technically impossible due to harsh geographical terrains and dispersed population. Normally, such areas are used standalone diesel generators to supply electrical power, which partially covers the load demand. Such standalone systems suffer from several problems of transporting and storing the fuel beside discontinues operation due to maintenance concerns. The alternative solution to solve these issues is to establish hybrid energy system contains; conventional and renewable …

Experimental Study And Improvement On Tribological Behaviors Of Automotive Lubricants With Dilution Of Various Gasoline-Bioethanol Blends / Leang So Khuong, So Khuong Leang

Student Works (2010-2019)

Concerns over depleting fossil fuel reserves and climate change have resulted in stringent legislation demanding automobiles use more renewable fuels in particular bioethanol, which is being considered as a long-term gasoline replacement. However, the piston ring and cylinder wall interface, which is the largest contributor to engine friction, suffers the highest levels of fuel dilution into the lubricant from unburned fuel, especially bioethanol that has high heat of vaporization to enhance the tendency of fuel dilution in the crankcase. Recently, bioethanol is blended with gasoline at increasingly higher concentrations and the accumulation of fuel in the crankcase is significant. Therefore, …

Synthesis Of Nanofluid To Improve Heat Transfer In Annular Concenteric Heat Exchanger / Seyedeh Maryam Hosseini, Hosseini Seyedeh Maryam

Student Works (2010-2019)

Traditional heat exchanger liquids (e.g., water, ethylene glycol, oil and etc.) possess inherently low heat transfer performance as a consequence of their low thermal conductivities. In recent past, there has been remarkable interest in employing nanofluids (nano-coolants) for increasing thermal performance of these liquids. Nano-coolants taken under investigation in this research were aqueous suspensions of highly conductive nanoparticles in Distilled water (DI water) which provided enhanced thermal properties at even lower nanoparticle concentrations and were employed in different thermal applications such as solar collectors, heat exchangers and electronic cooling systems. The current study highlighted experimental study convective heat transfer as …

Comparison Of Three Techniques Of Nasogastric Tube Insertion In Anaesthetised, Paralyzed, And Intubated Patients: A Rendomized Open-Labelled Trial / Khaw Teik Seng, Teik Seng Khaw Dec 2017

Comparison Of Three Techniques Of Nasogastric Tube Insertion In Anaesthetised, Paralyzed, And Intubated Patients: A Rendomized Open-Labelled Trial / Khaw Teik Seng, Teik Seng Khaw

Student Works (2010-2019)

BACKGROUND: The insertion of nasogastric tube (NGT) in anaesthetized, paralyzed and intubated or unconscious patients may be difficult due to loss of swallow refle in these patients, with a reported failure rate or nearly 50% on the first attempt, with the head in neutral position. After a failure, subsequent attempts are usually unsuccessful due to coiling, kinking or knotting of the NGT as it Iosses stiffness due to warming to body temperature. The memory effect also contributes to subsequent failure: once kinked, the NGT is subsequently more like to kink at the same place. Common methods used to facilitate NGT …

The Potentiating Effect Of Mandelate And Lactate On Chemically-Induced Germination In Members Of Bacillus Cereus Sensu Lato., Ah Bishop Dec 2017

The Potentiating Effect Of Mandelate And Lactate On Chemically-Induced Germination In Members Of Bacillus Cereus Sensu Lato., Ah Bishop

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Endospores of the genus Bacillus can be triggered to germinate by a limited number of chemicals. Mandelate had powerful additive effects on the levels and rates of germination produced in non-heat-shocked spores of Bacillus anthracis strain Sterne, Bacillus cereus, and Bacillus thuringiensis when combined with l-alanine and inosine. Mandelate had no germinant effect on its own but was active with these germinants in a dose-dependent manner at concentrations higher than 0.5 mM. The maximum rate and extent of germination were produced in B. anthracis by 100 mM l-alanine with 10 mM inosine; this was equaled by just 25% of these …

John E. Davis (William H. Norman) -- A Galvanized Yankee In Utah, Kenneth L. Alford Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

An interesting and intriguing story about William H. Norman, who served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War as an infantry rifleman from Georgia, was captured by Union troops in December 1864 outside of Nashville, Tennessee, and was then incarcerated as a prisoner-of-war in Camp Douglas, Illinois. As a Confederate prisoner, the federal government gave him the option of remaining in the camp or renouncing his Confederate loyalty and enlisting in the Union Army. Like thousands of his fellow prisoners, he chose the second option and became a "galvanized Yankee." A few months later (after the end of …

Bank Lending Channel And Changing Credit Standards In The Residential Mortgage Market, Salman Tahsin Dec 2017

Bank Lending Channel And Changing Credit Standards In The Residential Mortgage Market, Salman Tahsin

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation examines the relationship between bank conditions and the residential mortgage market. The first essay investigates the effect of bank distress on the residential mortgage market during the 2007-09 financial crisis. We use the county-aggregated change in the ratio of jumbo to nonjumbo mortgage acceptance rate as an instrumental variable to control for endogeneity between bank distress and county economic conditions. The median decrease in the instrumental variable explains an additional 1.5 percentage point decline in county home prices and a 20 basis point rise in the county unemployment rate, which represent 15% and 5%, respectively, of their median …

Transcriptome-Based Gene Networks For Systems-Level Analysis Of Plant Gene Functions, Chirag Gupta Dec 2017

Transcriptome-Based Gene Networks For Systems-Level Analysis Of Plant Gene Functions, Chirag Gupta

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Present day genomic technologies are evolving at an unprecedented rate, allowing interrogation of

cellular activities with increasing breadth and depth. However, we know very little about how the

genome functions and what the identified genes do. The lack of functional annotations of genes

greatly limits the post-analytical interpretation of new high throughput genomic datasets. For plant

biologists, the problem is much severe. Less than 50% of all the identified genes in the model plant

Arabidopsis thaliana, and only about 20% of all genes in the crop model Oryza sativa have some

aspects of their functions assigned. Therefore, there is an …

Identifying Genetic Factors Influencing Sperm Mobility Phenotype In Chicken Using Genome Wide Association Studies, Primordial Germ Cell Transplantation, And Rnaseq., Sohita Ojha Dec 2017

Identifying Genetic Factors Influencing Sperm Mobility Phenotype In Chicken Using Genome Wide Association Studies, Primordial Germ Cell Transplantation, And Rnaseq., Sohita Ojha

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Sperm mobility is a major determinant of male fertility in chicken. In spite of low heritability of reproductive traits, sperm mobility has high heritability index which suggests presence of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) governing the trait. Our research focused on three objectives: i) to identify the QTLs affecting low mobility phenotype in chicken, ii) to understand the impact of Sertoli-cells and germ cells interactions in influencing the mobility phenotype and iii) to identify the genes and gene networks differentially expressed in male and female PGCs. To detect the QTLs, genome wide association studies (GWAS) was conducted which revealed the presence …

Determination Of The Effects Of Different Maillard Reaction Products On The Taxonomic Composition Of The Gut Microbiota, Nesreen Hamdan Aljahdali Dec 2017

Determination Of The Effects Of Different Maillard Reaction Products On The Taxonomic Composition Of The Gut Microbiota, Nesreen Hamdan Aljahdali

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Maillard Reaction (MR) is a non-enzymatic chemical reaction which results in linkage between the amino group of amino acids and the carbonyl group of reduced sugars. This reaction generates Maillard reaction products (MRPs) which are not present naturally in foods, and are responsible for a range of colors, odors, flavors, and other sensory properties. Conflicting reports of MRPs impacts on human health are probably due to the fact that bioconversion of these digestible molecules by the gut microbiota has been marginally taken into account. This study aimed to determine the effects of different MRPs on rodent’s gut microbiota through16S …

Cellular Mechanisms Of Ionoregulation In The Gill Of Japanese Medaka And Rainbow Trout, Rebecca Jo Bollinger Dec 2017

Cellular Mechanisms Of Ionoregulation In The Gill Of Japanese Medaka And Rainbow Trout, Rebecca Jo Bollinger

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Euryhaline fishes are capable of adapting to a wide range of salinities such as freshwater, brackish water or seawater. Through the combined effort of the gill, kidney and intestine, they are able to osmoregulate to maintain a constant internal hydromineral balance. As the gill is in direct contact with the external environment, it is continuously working to maintain ion and acid/base balance, gas exchange and eliminate nitrogenous waste. Fish in freshwater are subjected to osmotic water gain and diffusional ion loss across the gill and experience the opposite in seawater. Therefore, the gill exhibits extreme plasticity when experiencing a change …

Piglet Gut Microbiota Responses To Exposure To Outdoor Simulated Environment And Formula Feeding, Nguyen Vo Dec 2017

Piglet Gut Microbiota Responses To Exposure To Outdoor Simulated Environment And Formula Feeding, Nguyen Vo

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Several lines of evidence suggest that early-life gut microbiota composition is a crucial determinant of the susceptibility to diseases later in life. Understanding the evolution of early-life gut microbiota and critical factors that can modify this microbial community will espouse the prevention or reversion of health risk originating from dysbiosis of the gut microbiota in the early stage. In this research, we hypothesized that alterations in the environment (simulation of rural conditions by soil exposure) and feeding mode (breastmilk versus formula milk) will have significant impacts on the establishment of the gut microbiota in early life. At first, in literature …

Systematic Review For Water Network Failure Models And Cases, Yufei Gao Dec 2017

Systematic Review For Water Network Failure Models And Cases, Yufei Gao

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As estimated in the American Society of Civil Engineers 2017 report, in the United States, there are approximately 240,000 water main pipe breaks each year. To help estimate pipe breaks and maintenance frequency, a number of physically-based and statistically-based water main failure prediction models have been developed in the last 30 years. Precious review papers focused more on the evolution of failure models rather than modeling results. However, the modeling results of different models applied in case studies are worth reviewing as well.

In this review, we focus on research papers after Year 2008 and collect latest cases without repetition. …
