Broadband Router Security: History, Challenges And Future Implications, Patryk Szewczyk, Rose Macdonald Dec 2017

Broadband Router Security: History, Challenges And Future Implications, Patryk Szewczyk, Rose Macdonald

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Consumer grade broadband routers are integral to accessing the Internet and are primarily responsible for the reliable routing of data between networks. Despite the importance of broadband routers, security has never been at the forefront of their evolution. Consumers are often in possession of broadband routers that are rich in consumer-orientated features yet riddled with vulnerabilities that make the routers susceptible to exploitation. This amalgamation of theoretical research examines consumer grade broadband routers from the perspective of how they evolved, what makes them vulnerable, how they are targeted and the challenges concerning the application of security. The research further explores …

A Data Hiding Scheme Based On Chaotic Map And Pixel Pairs, Sengul Dogan Sd Dec 2017

A Data Hiding Scheme Based On Chaotic Map And Pixel Pairs, Sengul Dogan Sd

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Information security is one of the most common areas of study today. In the literature, there are many algorithms developed in the information security. The Least Significant Bit (LSB) method is the most known of these algorithms. LSB method is easy to apply however it is not effective on providing data privacy and robustness. In spite of all its disadvantages, LSB is the most frequently used algorithm in literature due to providing high visual quality. In this study, an effective data hiding scheme alternative to LSB, 2LSBs, 3LSBs and 4LSBs algorithms (known as xLSBs), is proposed. In this method, random …

Background: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advocate data collection and monitoring as one facet of a comprehensive approach to combat antimicrobial resistance in the United States. However, a paucity of such data exists at the local/state level for common disease-causing organisms.

Methods: To begin to characterize epidemiologic correlates of antibacterial resistance in Wisconsin, data analyses were performed with respect to isolates in the Surveillance of Wisconsin Organisms for Trends in Antimicrobial Resistance and Epidemiology (SWOTARE) 2016 collection. In addition to submitting isolates of Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Streptococcus pneumoniae, participating laboratories were also requested to …

Delivering Service-Based New Product Development: Stewardship Cabability Differentiates Success From Failure In Back-End Innovation, Nancy Y. Nee Dec 2017

Delivering Service-Based New Product Development: Stewardship Cabability Differentiates Success From Failure In Back-End Innovation, Nancy Y. Nee

Student Scholarship

Previous research and literature highlight the factors that influence the success and failure of delivering new product development (NPD) to achieve back-end innovation. In particular, previous research identifies the key importance of executive sponsorship/championship on the success of back-end innovation by delivering NPD. Despite this key finding, NPD delivery continues to fail even with executive sponsorship/championship engagement. Stewardship is a construct that executive sponsors/champions use to ensure that the NPD delivery is aligned with the best interests of the organization and its stakeholders. The aim of this study is to provide an understanding of how stewardship affects the sponsorship/championship role …

Generalized Ellipsometry On Complex Nanostructures And Low-Symmetry Materials, Alyssa Mock Dec 2017

Generalized Ellipsometry On Complex Nanostructures And Low-Symmetry Materials, Alyssa Mock

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In this thesis, complex anisotropic materials are investigated and characterized by generalized ellipsometry. In recent years, anisotropic materials have gained considerable interest for novel applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices, mostly due to unique properties that originate from reduced crystal symmetry. Examples include white solid-state lighting devices which have become ubiquitous just recently, and the emergence of high-power, high-voltage electronic transistors and switches in all-electric vehicles. The incorporation of single crystalline material with low crystal symmetry into novel device structures requires reconsideration of existing optical characterization approaches. Here, the generalized ellipsometry concept is extended to include applications for materials with …

An Unmanned Aerial System For Prescribed Fires, Evan M. Beachly Dec 2017

An Unmanned Aerial System For Prescribed Fires, Evan M. Beachly

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Prescribed fires can lessen wildfire severity and control invasive species, but some terrains may be difficult, dangerous, or costly to burn with existing tools. This thesis presents the design of an unmanned aerial system that can ignite prescribed fires from the air, with less cost and risk than with aerial ignition from a manned aircraft. The prototype was evaluated in-lab and successfully used to ignite interior areas of two prescribed fires. Additionally, we introduce an approach that integrates a lightweight fire simulation to autonomously plan safe flight trajectories and suggest effective fire lines. Both components are unique in that they …

Analytical Modeling Of A Communication Channel Based On Subthreshold Stimulation Of Neurobiological Networks, Alireza Khodaei Dec 2017

Analytical Modeling Of A Communication Channel Based On Subthreshold Stimulation Of Neurobiological Networks, Alireza Khodaei

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The emergence of wearable and implantable machines manufactured artificially or synthesized biologically opens up a new horizon for patient-centered health services such as medical treatment, health monitoring, and rehabilitation with minimized costs and maximized popularity when provided remotely via the Internet. In particular, a swarm of machines at the scale of a single cell down to the nanoscale can be deployed in the body by the non-invasive or minimally invasive operation (e.g., swallowing and injection respectively) to perform various tasks. However, an individual machine is only able to perform basic tasks so it needs to exchange data with the others …

The Effects Of Dopamine On Frequency Dependent Short Term Synaptic Plasticity: A Comparison Of Layer Contributions And Rhythmic Dynamics, Jonna Marie Jackson Dec 2017

The Effects Of Dopamine On Frequency Dependent Short Term Synaptic Plasticity: A Comparison Of Layer Contributions And Rhythmic Dynamics, Jonna Marie Jackson

Dissertations

Executive functions (e.g. working memory [WM]) are known to be mediated by prefrontal cortical areas of the human brain which share homology with mouse medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Furthermore, it is well established that optimal dopaminergic input is required for proper WM function in the PFC. While it is well established that the mPFC receives inputs from several different brain areas, impinging on different compartmental regions of cells, it remains unknown how layer V pyramidal cells, the major output cells of the mPFC, integrate this information. Additionally, it remains unknown how dopamine modulates this integration by way of separate afferents …

Successful Reversal Of Furosemide-Induced Secondary Hyperparathyroidism With Cinacalcet., Tarak Srivastava, Shahryar Jafri, William E. Truog, Judith Sebestyen Vansickle, Winston M. Manimtim, Uri S. Alon

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is a rare complication of furosemide therapy that can occur in patients treated with the loop diuretic for a long period of time. We report a 6-month-old 28-weeks premature infant treated chronically with furosemide for his bronchopulmonary dysplasia, who developed hypocalcemia and severe SHPT, adversely affecting his bones. Discontinuation of the loop diuretic and the addition of supplemental calcium and calcitriol only partially reversed the SHPT, bringing serum parathyroid hormone level down from 553 to 238 pg/mL. After introduction of the calcimimetic Cinacalcet, we observed a sustained normalization of parathyroid hormone concentration at 27 to 63 pg/mL …

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Objective Research indicates that children are at higher risk for obesity if their parents have been exposed to a larger number of stressors, yet little is known about effects of parents’ subjective, perceived experience of stress on children’s eating behaviours and adiposity and whether weight-related parenting practices (i.e. parent rules and positive family meal practices) mediate this relationship. The present study evaluated the direct and mediated relationship between parent perceived stress and child waist circumference and parent stress and child consumption of added sugars one year later.

Section of Haematology/Oncology

The hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) activity has grown significantly over the past two decades in both developing and developed countries. Many challenges arise in establishing new HCT programs in developing countries, due to scarcity of resources and manpower in expertise in HCT. While cost issues can potentially hinder establishment of new HCT programs in certain regions, the focus on quality and value should be included in the general vision of leadership before establishing an HCT program. The main challenge in most developing countries is the lack of trained/qualified personnel, enormous start-up costs for a tertiary care center, and quality maintenance. …

Thresholds Of Sea-Level Rise Rate And Sea-Level Rise Acceleration Rate In A Vulnerable Coastal Wetland, Wei Wu, Patrick D. Biber, Matthew Bethel Dec 2017

Thresholds Of Sea-Level Rise Rate And Sea-Level Rise Acceleration Rate In A Vulnerable Coastal Wetland, Wei Wu, Patrick D. Biber, Matthew Bethel

Faculty Publications

Feedbacks among inundation, sediment trapping, and vegetation productivity help maintain coastal wetlands facing sea-level rise (SLR). However, when the SLR rate exceeds a threshold, coastal wetlands can collapse. Understanding the threshold helps address key challenges in ecology—nonlinear response of ecosystems to environmental change, promotes communication between ecologists and resource managers, and facilitates decision-making in climate change policies. We studied the threshold of SLR rate and developed a new threshold of SLR acceleration rate on sustainability of coastal wetlands as SLR is likely to accelerate due to enhanced anthropogenic forces. Deriving these two thresholds depends on the temporal scale, the interaction …

A License To Kill: Understanding Natural Killer Cell Licensing To Fight Cancer, Jolie Schafer Dec 2017

A License To Kill: Understanding Natural Killer Cell Licensing To Fight Cancer, Jolie Schafer

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Natural killer (NK) cell education is an essential developmental process for NK cell effector function, that renders some NK cells “licensed” and others “unlicensed” (with heightened or lowered effector function potential, respectively) against tumor and targets lacking self-molecules. However, the underlying mechanisms responsible for the heightened effector responses of licensed cells remain unknown. Using NK cells derived from humans and expanded ex vivo we performed high-throughput protein expression analysis, and identified multiple proteins that are differentially regulated in licensed and unlicensed human NK cells before and after inhibition by killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) and activation by the NKp46 natural cytotoxicity …

Evaluating The Therapeutic Efficacy Of Restoring Wild-Type P53 Activity In P53-Mutant Tumors, Connie A. Larsson Dec 2017

Evaluating The Therapeutic Efficacy Of Restoring Wild-Type P53 Activity In P53-Mutant Tumors, Connie A. Larsson

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The p53 transcription factor is the most frequently altered in human cancers usually via missense mutations that undermine its transcriptional activity. Clinically, TP53 mutations have been shown to be remarkably predictive of refractoriness to treatment, resulting in poor outcome. Consequently, the development of p53 pathway activating agents is rapidly evolving and gaining more attention in cancer therapeutics research, with several small molecule compounds currently in preclinical and clinical trials. However, it remains largely unknown what types or proportions of p53-mutant tumors will respond to p53 restoration-based therapies.

Using a mouse model of Li Fraumeni syndrome, we genetically restored wild-type …

Creation, Negotiation, Equality: Empowering Young Women Through Dance Improvisation, Marlene Catherine Strang

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to explore whether a dance improvisation curriculum could help young women strengthen their negotiating skills. Research identifies skills such as confidence, problem solving, creativity, listening, and collaboration as necessary to successful negotiation. This project examined whether students could learn these critical negotiation skills through dance improvisation. More broadly, it assessed the benefits of a dance improvisation practice and how those benefits can apply to everyday life outside of the dance classroom. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to analyze data in this study. The following instrumentation resulted in data that were analyzed qualitatively: …
