What Can Tv Teach Us About The Spiritually Healthy Institution?, Susan Scheibler Dec 2017

What Can Tv Teach Us About The Spiritually Healthy Institution?, Susan Scheibler

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

This article posits that the television series Bones offers a model for a lively, vital, and spiritually healthy 21st century Catholic institution of higher education. It does this through a close analysis of the series as a whole as informed by arguments posed by Catholic thinkers, and it argues that the show—through its characters, settings, stories, plots, and themes—self-consciously and consistently engages and explores various aspects of faith and reason, justice and ethics, within the context of a multidisciplinary research institution. In this way, an examination of the series can add depth and dimension within which educators are able to …

Nurturing Student Scientists As People Of Faith, Nicole C. Bouvier-Brown Dec 2017

Nurturing Student Scientists As People Of Faith, Nicole C. Bouvier-Brown

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

The Loyola Marymount University (LMU) campus community fosters the interplay between religious faith and scientific reason. Not only is this evident by honoring scientists in the stained-glass windows of Sacred Heart Chapel, but the culture invigorates a disproportionate number of science students to actively engage with the faith community. This integration might seem counter to society’s norms, but it is well aligned with the teachings of the Catholic Church and Jesuit tradition. Jesuit universities, in particular, have a unique role to play in fostering the mutual enrichment between faith and scientific reason. Education should be used to bridge the misunderstandings …

Thermal-Fluid Dynamic Model Of Luge Steels, Brandon Stell Dec 2017

Thermal-Fluid Dynamic Model Of Luge Steels, Brandon Stell

Master's Theses

Luge is an Olympic sport in which athletes ride feet-first on sleds down an ice-covered track. Competitors spring from the starting position and accelerate their sled by paddling with spiked gloves against the ice surface. Once the Luger leaves the starting section, their downhill motion is solely propelled by the effects of gravity. Athletes compete, one after the other, for the fastest time. Runs can differ by as little as a thousandth of a second, meaning that every minor sled adjustment, change of line choice, and shift of body position is critical. In the past, the sport of Luge has …

Appearance And Spectroscopic Characterization Of Automotive Coatings For Forensic Purposes, Kimberly Kha Dec 2017

Appearance And Spectroscopic Characterization Of Automotive Coatings For Forensic Purposes, Kimberly Kha

Master's Theses

Automotive paint is a common type of trace evidence in the forensics community due to the prevalence of vehicular collisions. Forensic examinations of these samples typically involve visual inspection for physical properties such as color. However, these observations are subject to variability due to observer and environmental factors. Therefore, objective methods of color description based on spectrophotometry using coordinate systems are now recommended by US forensics standards in addition to chemical analysis for binder and pigment information. Color meters and microspectrophotometers (MSP) are common instruments for quantifying color descriptions using opponent coordinate systems such as the International Commission on Illumination …

The Role Of Soil Stiffness In Reverse Fault Rupture Propagation, Moises I. Buelna Dec 2017

The Role Of Soil Stiffness In Reverse Fault Rupture Propagation, Moises I. Buelna

Master's Theses

A nonlinear Mohr-Coulomb constitutive model with a strain dependent yield surface and non-associated flow was employed to study the plastic soil properties which affect the rate of surface fault rupture propagation in reverse events. These numerical simulations show a trend for soils with higher stiffness to have a higher rate of rupture propagation. Additionally the study shows the effects of strain softening and hardening on the rate of rupture propagation. Soils which strain harden exhibiting ductile behavior typically require more basal offset to rupture to the surface than soils which strain soften exhibiting brittle behavior. These results agree with our …

Manufacturing And Instrumentation Of An Open End Compressed Air Shock Tube, Josue O. Ruiz Dec 2017

Manufacturing And Instrumentation Of An Open End Compressed Air Shock Tube, Josue O. Ruiz

Master's Theses

Shock tubes have been used extensively to study shock wave structures and high speed flow features. The purpose of constructing this open end shock tube was to have the ability to produce shock waves in a laboratory setting but also understand the exit flow coming out which can be applied to future studies that are beyond the scope of this work. This undertaking would require that an open end shock tube be built and instrumented with PCB Integrated Circuit Piezoelectric (ICP) Pressure Sensor Model 113B24 that would then be connected to a PCB Model 482C05 Signal Conditioner with the purpose …

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The macroeconomic effects of tax reform are a subject of significant discussion and controversy. In 2015, the House of Representatives adopted a new “dynamic scoring” rule requiring a point estimate within the budget window of the deficit effect due to the macroeconomic response to certain proposed tax legislation. The revenue estimates provided by the staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) for major tax bills often play a critical role in Congressional deliberations and public discussion of those bills. The JCT has long had macroeconomic analytic capability, and in recent years, responding to Congress’ interest in macrodynamic estimates for …

A Destination-Based Cash Flow Tax Can Be Structured To Comply With World Trade Organization Rules, Itai Grinberg Dec 2017

A Destination-Based Cash Flow Tax Can Be Structured To Comply With World Trade Organization Rules, Itai Grinberg

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper briefly outlines alternative approaches to enacting a destination-based cash flow tax that are more clearly compatible with the World Trade Organization rules than the approach that has previously been described in the literature. The first structural alternative involves expanding the universe of businesses subject to the tax by clearly defining both the base of the new U.S. business tax and its tax nexus requirement as domestic consumption, and thereafter treating foreign importers and other sellers equivalently, rather than imposing a deduction disallowance or an import tax. The second alternative involves adopting a business activities tax, and then enacting …

The “Great” Generation And A Not-So-Great Health System, Lawrence O. Gostin Dec 2017

The “Great” Generation And A Not-So-Great Health System, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

My travels usually take me to far-flung places, but today is different. I'm on a train to New York City, shuttling back and forth from Washington, DC. My father is 101 years old, and just one year ago he gave a 30-minute speech without notes at his centenary birthday celebration. He ended his speech saying, “I'm often asked how I lived so long. The answer is I just lived.” An uncomplicated man who lived a long and complicated life, staying mindfully in the present. Here is his story about a 101-year-old, decorated World War II Veteran, who our country and …

Varieties Of Constitutional Experience: Democracy And The Marriage Equality Campaign, Nan D. Hunter Dec 2017

Varieties Of Constitutional Experience: Democracy And The Marriage Equality Campaign, Nan D. Hunter

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Beginning in the 1970s, the overwhelming success of anti-gay ballot questions made direct democracy the most powerful bête noire of the LGBT rights movement. It is thus deeply ironic that, more than any other factor, an electoral politics-style campaign led to the national mandate for marriage equality announced by the Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges. This occurred because marriage equality advocates set out to change social and constitutional meanings not primarily through courts or legislatures, but with a strategy designed to win over moveable middle voters in ballot question elections. Successful pro-gay litigation arguments, followed by supportive reasoning …

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

Many mosques in East Java are built by the Nahdliyin and are culturally affiliated to Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the biggest Indonesian moderate Muslim organization. NU maintains a specific value system as the continuation of the Wali Sanga tradition. This paper discusses the representation of these values and traditions in the contemporary mosques of Nahdliyin in Malang, East Java. These mosques are where a great basis of the Nahdliyin experiences dynamic interaction with other Muslim groups take place. The results show that despite their pluralistic formal expressions, these contemporary mosques of Nahdliyinshare similar values and traditions with Wali Sanga mosques.

Enhancing The Potential Cooling Benefits Of Urban Water Bodies, Nedyomukti Imam Syafii, Masayuki Ichinose, Eiko Kumakura, Kohei Chigusa, Steve Kardinal Jusuf, Nyuk Hien Wong

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

In Saitama, Japan, a series of experimental studies has been conducted inside an outdoor scale model canopy to find an effective design solution of water bodies for improving urban thermal environmentand pedestrian comfort. Thus, the study result may help designers and planners to manage tradeoffs between the cooling effect demands, land-use limits and other design elements in urban environments. By modifying its physical properties, the present study shows a clear evidence of the mitigating capacity of urban water bodies. The result shows that generally, a bigger pond has greater cooling benefits. Nevertheless, by lowering the water temperature, the cooling benefit …

Ethical Relativism And Critical Regionalism:An Ethical Viewpoint On The Non-Western Architectural Professions, Supasai Vongkulbhisal Dec 2017

Ethical Relativism And Critical Regionalism:An Ethical Viewpoint On The Non-Western Architectural Professions, Supasai Vongkulbhisal

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

This paper focuses on the ethical theories and practices relating to Critical Regionalism, Tropicality, and Contemporary Vernacular today. Ethical Relativism is selected as a main ethical philosophy to question, challenge, and examine the hybridized fusion that results when the complex structural dislocation of Western modern discourse is applied to different regional grounds far from its origin. Ethical Relativism denies that there is a single moral standard which is equally applicable to all people at all times. The empirically ascertained fact of this ethics is that there are a great many different and even conflicting rules and practices prevailing at different …

Orwell's 1984 And A Fourth Amendment Cybersurveillance Nonintrusion Test, Margaret Hu Dec 2017

Orwell's 1984 And A Fourth Amendment Cybersurveillance Nonintrusion Test, Margaret Hu

Washington Law Review

This Article describes a cybersurveillance nonintrusion test under the Fourth Amendment that is grounded in evolving customary law to replace the reasonable expectation of privacy test formulated in Katz v. United States. To illustrate how customary law norms are shaping modern Fourth Amendment jurisprudence, this Article examines the recurrence of judicial references to George Orwell’s novel, 1984, within the Fourth Amendment context when federal courts have assessed the constitutionality of modern surveillance methods. The Supreme Court has indicated that the Fourth Amendment privacy doctrine must now evolve to impose meaningful limitations on the intrusiveness of new surveillance technologies. …

Policy Implications: An Analysis Of Intercountry Adoption In Relation To Nationalism, Victoria Szczechowski Dec 2017

Policy Implications: An Analysis Of Intercountry Adoption In Relation To Nationalism, Victoria Szczechowski

Honors Theses

This research seeks to answer the question: Does level of nationalist sentiment expressed within a country affect the restrictiveness of the country’s intercountry adoption policy? Current literature has examined the influence of the level of nationalism expressed in a country on adoptive parents in choosing from which country to adopt; however, no study has examined the link between nationalism and country-specific intercountry adoption policy. The variable of nationalist sentiment warrants study, for the Hague Convention posits that intercountry adoption is a valid option only if “a suitable family cannot be found in his or her [the adoptable child’s] State of …

Fluorescence-Reported Allelic Exchange Mutagenesis Reveals A Role For Chlamydia Trachomatis Tmea In Invasion That Is Independent Of Host Ahnak, M. J. Mckuen, Konrad E. Mueller, Y. S. Bae, Kenneth A. Fields

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Development of approaches to genetically manipulate Chlamydia is fostering important advances in understanding pathogenesis. Fluorescence-reported allelic exchange mutagenesis (FRAEM) now enables the complete deletion of specific genes in C. trachomatis L2. We have leveraged this technology to delete the coding sequences for a known type III effector. The evidence provided here indicates that CT694/CTL0063 is a virulence protein involved in chlamydial invasion. Based on our findings, we designate the gene product corresponding to ct694-ctl0063 translocated membrane-associated effector A (TmeA). Deletion of tmeA did not impact development of intracellular chlamydiae. However, the absence of TmeA manifested as a decrease in infectivity …
