The poster provided here showcases results from a simulation study that began in the Spring Quarter of 2017 at CSU San Bernardino. The results presented here are based on four simulations conducted on campus in our nursing lab space. We incorporated the participation of 44 students in our study.
Patients are cared for by a nurse and multidisciplinary teams which may include physical therapists, social workers, and public health workers; however, students in health care programs usually will not experience necessary scenarios developing needed skills. Although needed skills are learned within the walls of the university they remain in a …
An Investigation Of Topology Optimization For Coupled Thermo-Structural Loading For Additive Manufacturing, Vaibhav Shankar Gaikwad
An Investigation Of Topology Optimization For Coupled Thermo-Structural Loading For Additive Manufacturing, Vaibhav Shankar Gaikwad
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
This work investigates the ability of topology optimization methods to design multifunctional components with coupled thermo-structural loading for fabrication with additive manufacturing technologies. Topology Optimization is a mathematical approach developed to perform design optimization with the purpose of reducing material usage, while maximizing the structural and thermal performance, in accordance to specific design constraints. Additive manufacturing provides the capability to create internal structures and complex surfaces developed by topology optimization that would not be possible to produce by conventional manufacturing. The more structurally efficient configuration generated by topology optimization and fabricated with additive manufacturing can result in components with improved …
Virtual Reality Based Simulation Testbed For Evaluation Of Autonomous Vehicle Behavior Algorithms, Vibhor Rastogi
Virtual Reality Based Simulation Testbed For Evaluation Of Autonomous Vehicle Behavior Algorithms, Vibhor Rastogi
All Theses
Validation of Autonomous Vehicle behavior algorithms requires thorough testing against a wide range of test scenarios. It is not financially and practically feasible to conduct these tests entirely in a real world setting. We discuss the design and implementation of a VR based simulation testbed that allows such testing to be conducted virtually, linking a computer-generated environment to the system running the autonomous vehicle's decision making algorithms and operating in real-time. We illustrate the system by further discussing the design and implementation of an application that builds upon the VR simulation testbed to visually evaluate the performance of an Advance …
An Evaluation Of Methodologies For Measuring Antibacterial Activity Of The Epithelial Mucosa Of Farmed Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus) Against Streptococcus Agalactiae And Streptococcus Iniae, Betsy Virginia White Presgraves
All Theses
Tilapiine cichlids are the third largest farmed fish worldwide and are among the easiest and most profitable fish to farm. The most common pathogens affecting farmed tilapia are Streptococcus agalactiae and Streptococcus iniae, which together account for losses of more than 150 million dollars annually. Fish are at the highest risk for developing a Streptococcus infection when they are in high density stock conditions. Research indicates that the secondary effects of high stock density such as low dissolved oxygen and high ammonia levels are of less significance to infection and mortality than the damage that over stocking causes to …

Locker Room Talk: Dialogic Navigations Of The Discursive Arena Of Campus Sexual Assault, Sarah Beach
All Theses
This creative Master's thesis project records a set of experiences of a graduate teaching assistant's engagement with student, faculty, and staff activists in sexual assault on a Southeastern university campus during the academic years of 2015-2016 and 2016-2017. Using literature, interviews, dialogic engagement, and participant observation, I document, discuss, and analyze discursive norms and campus interventions, specifically in the context of campus rape culture. I outline my philosophical commitments, relate my experiences meeting with members of the university community, and offer my findings and reflections in a thematic report. The implications make a strong case for the importance of dialogic …

Effects Of Dialogic Reading In A Special Day Class, Donna Senn
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Early Childhood Special Education provides services to children aged three to five years. A predominant identifier is very low communication skills (Shevell, et al, 2003; Kaiser & Roberts, 2011; Robertson & Ohi, 2016). Dialogic Reading techniques have demonstrated successes in various settings (Hargrave & Senechal, 2000; Whitehurst et al., 1988; Trivette & Dunst, 2009). The rationale for this study was grounded in Rogoff’s, “apprenticeship in thinking” (1990, p. 7) theory. The research literature reviewed centered on three primary lines of inquiry namely, 1) The social aspect of language learning; 2) Speech and language interventions; and 3) Dialogic reading strategies. Comparing The Effectiveness Of Alternative And Prescription Antibiotics Against Gram-Positive Bacteria, Rachel Jenkins, Roan Dickenson, Sam Turnbull, Marcela Torres
Senior Theses
The rapid emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a global public health concern that threatens the efficacy of antibiotic drugs. We found that natural remedies, specifically coconut oil, honey and cinnamon essential oil, have the potential to be used as a clinical alternative to treat antibiotic-resistant infections. In this experiment, we performed a disk diffusion test and measured the area of inhibition of each treatment to compare the effectiveness of natural and prescription antibiotics. Cinnamon essential oil showed significantly greater antibiotic activity compared to a prescription treatment, amoxicillin. With bacterial resistance continuously expanding, more work needs to be done to determine …
Assessment And Attitudes: Biodiversity In Urban Landscapes Of North Central Texas, Gray Harrison Kerry A.
Assessment And Attitudes: Biodiversity In Urban Landscapes Of North Central Texas, Gray Harrison Kerry A.
Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive
North Central Texas is expected to undergo increased population growth and density inside and outside of current municipal boundaries. As development increases to meet the needs of the growing population, the landscape is transformed, which results in the loss or homogenization of species (McKinney, 2006; Vitousek, Mooney, Lubchenco, & Melillo, 1997). This study examined how landscape architects can quickly assess biodiversity on a project site before and after construction without specialized knowledge or skills. Three methods were used to collect data for this study: interviews, a DNA assessment of soil fungi, and a rapid biological assessment (BioBlitz). Two groups were …
Numerical Study Of Droplet Evaporation, Ritul Gandhi
Numerical Study Of Droplet Evaporation, Ritul Gandhi
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Droplet evaporation plays a vital role in various engineering fields such as air/fuel premixing, inkjet printing and many more. The high rate of power dissipation from the integrated circuits and chips of electronic devices creates a need for cooling it to achieve their optimal functionality. The high rate of cooling can be achieved by thin film evaporation of water by phase change as compared to the air cooling methods. Therefore, the study of droplet evaporation is necessary to understand the underlying physics and effects of different parameters on cooling performance. Numerical study of droplet evaporation has been done by using …

"So Far As War Allows": Why The Al Mahdi Conviction Is Unlikely To Stem The Pace Of Cultural Destruction Perpetrated By Non-State Actors, Jessica E. Burrus
Washington International Law Journal
In September of 2016, Ahmad Al Faqi Al Mahdi was convicted in the International Criminal Court (“ICC”) for the intentional destruction of several World Heritage sites during the 2012 conflict in Timbuktu, Mali. This conviction was hailed as a breakthrough after years of frustration with the lack of enforcement of international laws prohibiting the destruction of cultural property. It was also the first conviction of its kind, and advocates of cultural preservation have celebrated it as a much-needed general deterrent in North Africa and the Middle East, where iconoclasm has become a favorite tactic of various state and non-state actors …

Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery
In many parts of the world, mostly low- and middle-income countries, timely diagnosis and repair of congenital heart diseases (CHDs) is not feasible for a variety of reasons. In these regions, economic growth has enabled the development of cardiac units that manage patients with CHD presenting later than would be ideal, often after the window for early stabilisation - transposition of the great arteries, coarctation of the aorta - or for lower-risk surgery in infancy - left-to-right shunts or cyanotic conditions. As a result, patients may have suffered organ dysfunction, manifest signs of pulmonary vascular disease, or the sequelae of …

Introduction/Objective: There is an international consensus on the significant role of competent midwives in improving maternal and newborn health indicators. Midwives and midwifery education in the developing world including Pakistan have lagged behind in being part of higher education. To enhance the quality of maternal and newborn services through competency based higher education in midwifery, the first Bachelors of Science in Midwifery (BScM) programme was introduced in Pakistan. As part of a larger study about establishing this programme, this paper focuses on the reflective logs of midwifery faculty members who initiated this new programme in Pakistan.
Method: The team of …

Exploring The Fears Of Pakistani Primi Gravidas About Childbirth, Zohra Kurji, Amina Aijaz Khowaja, Zahra Shaheen, Yasmin Mithani, Naveeda Haq
Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)
Background: Childbirth can be a very painful experience as it brings a lot of physiological and psychological changes in women’s lives. The literature demonstrates that anxiety and fear during the birthing process is related to a woman’s ability to give birth safely; fear can lead to complications such as emergency caesarean section and a reduced ability to tolerate pain. Therefore, health care professionals need to explore fears and educate expectant mothers, most especially primi gravidas, about the birthing process.
Method: A qualitative descriptive exploratory design was used to investigate fears about childbirth. Purposive sampling was used to recruit a …

Determinants Of Quality Of Care And Access To Basic Emergency Obstetric And Neonatal Care Facilities And Midwife-Led Facilities In Low And Middle-Income Countries: A Systematic Review, Preeti K. Mahato, Edwin Van Teijlingen, Padam P. Simkhada, Catherine Angell
Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)
Background: Maternal mortality is a major challenge to health systems in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) where almost 99% of maternal deaths occurred in 2015. Primary-care facilities providing Basic Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (BEmONC) facilities, and facilities that are midwife-led are appropriate for normal birth in LMICs and have been proposed as the best approach to reduce maternal deaths. However, the poor quality of maternal services that leads to decreased utilisation of these facilities is among the major causes of maternal deaths worldwide. This systematic review studied factors affecting the quality of care in BEmONC and midwife-led facilities in …

Determining The Effectiveness Of The Cancer Phase Training Model In A Group Setting, Scott F. Eberhardt
Master's Theses
The role of exercise as a primary therapy has been well documented and has the capacity to act across multiple body systems to attenuate cancer-related toxicities. To date, the Cancer Phase Training Model is the only cancer rehabilitation intervention that includes recommended modes, intensity, frequency, and duration of exercise for cancer survivors. The one-on-one model has been shown to be the most effective method of cancer rehabilitation; however the largest perceived limitation of this model is the expense of the program and its lack of scalability. By creating a structured cancer specific group model that can produce similar results to …

Species Interactions Weakly Modify Climate-Induced Tree Co-Occurrence Patterns, Paige E. Copenhaver-Parry, David M. Bell
Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science
Aims: Species distributions are hypothesized to be underlain by a complex association of processes that span multiple spatial scales including biotic interactions, dispersal limitation, fine-scale resource gradients and climate. Species disequilibrium with climate may reflect the effects of non-climatic processes on species distributions, yet distribution models have rarely directly considered non-climatic processes. Here, we use a Joint Species Distribution Model (JSDM) to investigate the influence of non-climatic factors on species co-occurrence patterns and to directly quantify the relative influences of climate and alternative processes that may generate correlated responses in species distributions, such as species interactions, on tree co-occurrence patterns. …
