Advantages & Challenges: An Assessment Of Suny Oneonta's Current Approach To International Student Services, Sarah Busche
Advantages & Challenges: An Assessment Of Suny Oneonta's Current Approach To International Student Services, Sarah Busche
Capstone Collection
The decision to become an international student is a choice that is as challenging as it is rewarding, and is one that I am familiar with from both a professional and personal standpoint. Per a recent Open Doors’ account, 1,043,839 students from around the world have made the decision to study in the United States in 2016. These individuals make up 9% of New York State’s student population, and 10.1% of the State University of New York system (SUNY, 2016). Currently SUNY Oneonta is host to 56 of these international students, whom I was excited to work with through my …
The Problem Of Illusion In The Phenomenology Of Claude Romano, Joseph Cutolo
The Problem Of Illusion In The Phenomenology Of Claude Romano, Joseph Cutolo
Student Theses and Dissertations
The phenomenology of Claude Romano constructs a strict distinction between perceptions and illusions. This distinction is so strict that the former excludes the latter completely. Putting this distinction into play is not a local decision about our experiences and the structures of our experiences. This decision brings with it metaphysical, ontological, and phenomenological frameworks to ground it. In what follows I attempt to draw out the consequences of Romano’s decisions about our experience, and to study the philosophical frameworks that underlie his decisions. In doing so, I reconnect his phenomenology with a wider terminology of phenomenology, in order to study …
Diversification Of The Japanese Judiciary, Daniel H. Foote
Diversification Of The Japanese Judiciary, Daniel H. Foote
Washington International Law Journal
Japan has a career judiciary. The Courts Act of 1947 provides that judges may be appointed from among prosecutors, attorneys, and law professors. In practice, however, the vast majority of judges come from a fourth category, “assistant judges,” who are appointed directly upon completion of the legal training program and typically serve through retirement. This continues a career tradition that dates back to the late nineteenth century. For nearly that long, the Japanese bar has been advocating that the career system should be abolished and that a substantial portion of the judiciary, if not all judges, should be drawn from …
A Departure For Returning To Sabha: A Study Of Koan Practice Of Silence, Jea Sophia Oh
A Departure For Returning To Sabha: A Study Of Koan Practice Of Silence, Jea Sophia Oh
Philosophy Faculty Publications
This paper deals with koan practice of silence through analyzing the Korean Zen Buddhist film, Why Has Boddhidharma Left for the East? (Bae, Yong-Kyun, Why Has Bodhidharma Left for the East? 1989). This paper follows Kibong's path along with the Buddha's journey of 1) departure, 2) journey in the middle way, and 3) returning with a particular focus on koan practice of silence as the transformative element of enlightenment. Analyzing silence throughout the film, this paper studies the Seon Buddhist lifestyle in an aesthetic way and finds a philosophical understanding of interdependency of samsara and nirvana. Silence is a crucial …
Control Surfaces Of Aquatic Vertebrates: Active And Passive Design And Function, Frank E. Fish, George V. Lauder
Control Surfaces Of Aquatic Vertebrates: Active And Passive Design And Function, Frank E. Fish, George V. Lauder
Biology Faculty Publications
Aquatic vertebrates display a variety of control surfaces that are used for propulsion, stabilization, trim and maneuvering. Control surfaces include paired and median fins in fishes, and flippers and flukes in secondarily aquatic tetrapods. These structures initially evolved from embryonic fin folds in fishes and have been modified into complex control surfaces in derived aquatic tetrapods. Control surfaces function both actively and passively to produce torque about the center of mass by the generation of either lift or drag, or both, and thus produce vector forces to effect rectilinear locomotion, trim control and maneuvers. In addition to fins and flippers, …

An Integrated Evaluation Of Potential Petroleum Systems Of The Southern Carnarvon Basin, Western Australia, James E. Hobbs
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
The Southern Carnarvon Basin is an elongate basin in Western Australia covering approximately 200,000km2. There are two main regions: a western platform (Gascoyne Platform) with a Cambrian to Lower Carboniferous succession that has mostly flat-lying Cretaceous-Cenozoic cover; and an eastern set of half-grabens (Merlinleigh Sub-basin) forming a single mid-Carboniferous – Permian depocenter, now separated by a gneissic basement of the Carrandibby Inlier, which is considered to be a part of the Merlinleigh Sub-basin. The two regions have little in common except for sharing a Devonian to Lower Carboniferous succession and both have predominantly Paleozoic infill. Tectonics processes recorded in the …

College Students’ Acceptance Of Online Mass-Customized Athletic Shoes, Yuli Liang, Chuanlan Liu, Lisa Barona Mcroberts
Faculty Publications
This research intends to understand the acceptance of online mass-customized athletic shoes among college students through applying the theory of reasoned action with a focus on whether utilitarian value and need for uniqueness influence favorable attitude formation differently. The questionnaires were distributed to 260 college students in a major southeastern US university using extra class credit as participation incentive. SPSS 23.0 and SPSS Amos 23 were used in data analysis. Structural equation modeling with a path comparison were used to assess construct validity and test the proposed hypotheses and conceptual framework. Results showed that college students’ acceptance and purchase intention …

Judge Eugene B. Strassburger Iii And His Court Cases In Family Division, Court Of Common Pleas Of Allegheny County (1980-1990), Joel Fishman
Law Faculty Publications
In the last two issues of the Pennsylvania Family Lawyer, I compiled a list of family law cases decided by Judges R. Stanton Wettick, Jr. and Lawrence W. Kaplan for the decade of the 1980s when the Divorce Code was first introduced into the Commonwealth. The local court was a leader in deciding cases that set forth many of the principles that the appellate courts adopted as new law. In this article, I present the cases of Judge Eugene B. Strassburger, III, who served in the Allegheny Court of Common Pleas from June 28, 1978, until his retirement on …

A Cluster Analysis Of Challenging Behaviors In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Elizabeth Stevens, Abigail Atchison, Laura Stevens, Esther Hong, Doreen Granpeesheh, Dennis Dixon, Erik J. Linstead
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We apply cluster analysis to a sample of 2,116 children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in order to identify patterns of challenging behaviors observed in home and centerbased clinical settings. The largest study of this type to date, and the first to employ machine learning, our results indicate that while the presence of multiple challenging behaviors is common, in most cases a dominant behavior emerges. Furthermore, the trend is also observed when we train our cluster models on the male and female samples separately. This work provides a basis for future studies to understand the relationship of challenging behavior profiles to …

When Leaders Are Not Who They Appear: The Effects Of Leader Disclosure Of A Concealable Stigma On Follower Reactions, Gary A. Adams, Jennica R. Webster
When Leaders Are Not Who They Appear: The Effects Of Leader Disclosure Of A Concealable Stigma On Follower Reactions, Gary A. Adams, Jennica R. Webster
Management Faculty Research and Publications
Two studies examined follower reactions to disclosure of concealable stigma (i.e., transgender identity) by a leader. Using 109 employed participants, Study 1 showed followers rated leaders disclosing a stigma less likable and effective. This effect was both direct and indirect through relational identification with the leader. Using 206 employed participants, Study 2 found when a leader's stigma was involuntarily found out and disclosed later they received lower ratings of likability and effectiveness compared to leaders who voluntarily came out and disclosed earlier. Method (found out vs. came out) and timing of disclosure (later vs. earlier) had direct relationships with ratings …
Well, That Took A While: An Anecdotal Comparison Of The Job Application Process Between Public And Academic Libraries, Jessica Garner
Well, That Took A While: An Anecdotal Comparison Of The Job Application Process Between Public And Academic Libraries, Jessica Garner
University Libraries: Faculty Presentations
When a position for Interlibrary Loan Librarian came open at Georgia Southern University in the latter part of 2015, I was intrigued. Although ensconced happily in a public library position and a 10-year veteran of public systems, the lure of an academic position-along with logistical considerations-prompted me to apply for the position. I believe my observations about the hiring, though anecdotal, begin to unravel a conversation comparing and contrasting academic libraries with public libraries, possibly to the benefit of both institutions.
Queen Dido And Empathy : A Different Perspective On An Ancient Epic., Rachel E Kelley
Queen Dido And Empathy : A Different Perspective On An Ancient Epic., Rachel E Kelley
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
This project investigates the relationships between gender, emotion, and madness in a range of pre-modern literary texts. It is evident that extreme emotion is gendered female in early literature. Moreover, violence against women—even sexual violence—is nearly ubiquitous in this literature as well. Associating the female with motive shows that such depictions have contributed to misogynist or masculinist viewpoints. However, this project will instead investigate the role of readers’ emotional responses, from identification to sympathy and even empathy, that such writing might hope to produce in readers. That is, these texts, in their depictions of female characters suffering extreme distress, might …

Virtual Reality And Augmented Reality Applications, Tuan Ho
Virtual Reality And Augmented Reality Applications, Tuan Ho
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Virtual Reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are the emerging fields of research. VR enables the immersive, being-there feelings of the viewers in a recorded or virtual environment, while AR enhances the real-world perception with the aid of an electronic device. On the VR part, this thesis introduces the novel 360-degree video stitching algorithms for dual-fisheye lens cameras, which are compact and affordable. On the AR section, this work presents a new approach in compressing the 3-dimensional point cloud models that are used in free view-point sports and tele-immersive applications.
