Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
The two of us (AR and LAE), in our teaching, research, and work with teachers, advocate for responsive teaching—an approach that seeks out and builds on the productive “seeds of science” in what our students say and do and assumes that “all students…are brilliant.” This pedagogical approach requires a commitment to listening to and intellectually empathizing with students’ scientific ideas.

What causes individuals to hurt others? Since the famous case of Phineas Gage, lesions of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) have been reliably linked to physically aggressive behavior. However, it is unclear whether naturally-occurring deficits in VMPFC, among normal individuals, might have widespread consequences for aggression. Using voxel based morphometry, we regressed gray matter density from the brains of 138 normal female and male adults onto their dispositional levels of physical aggression, verbal aggression, and sex, simultaneously. Physical, but not verbal, aggression was associated with reduced gray matter volume in the VMPFC and to a lesser extent, frontopolar cortex. Participants …

Background
Previous research on Uganda's poststroke population revealed that their level of dietary salt knowledge did not lead to healthier consumption choices.
Purpose
Identify barriers and motivators for healthy dietary behaviors and evaluate the understanding of widely accepted salt regulation mechanisms among poststroke patients in Uganda.
Methods
Convergent parallel mixed methods triangulation design comprised a cross-sectional survey (n = 81) and 8 focus group discussions with 7-10 poststroke participants in each group. We assessed participant characteristics and obtained insights into their salt consumption attitudes, perceptions, and knowledge. Qualitative responses were analyzed using an inductive approach with thematic analytic procedures. Relationships …
Development Of A Prototype Detection System To Investigate The Fission Mechanism Of Fermium (Fm) Isotopes, P K Rath
Manipal Journal of Science and Technology
The development of a prototype detection unit for measuring fission events in-beam is currently underway. Measurements associated with fission events include fission-fragment mass distributions (FFMD), fission-fragment angular distributions (FFAD), and total kinetic energy distribution (TKE). A systematic study of fission of the Fermium isotopes, 244Fm to 256Fm is being undertaken to investigate the dynamics of fission in this mass region. Novel results from this systematic study are expected for this uncharted set of nucleus, which shows a unique transitional asymmetric to symmetric fission mass distribution.

Manipal Journal of Science and Technology
Scalar magnetometers namely the proton precession magnetometers (PPM) are popular in various ground surveys and observatories. With this primary purpose of generating the ground based magnetic data, the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG) for the last three decades have been developing low cost PPM. Beginning with the 1 nT PPM, which has undergone several changes in design, the successor 0.1 nT PPM – the advanced version has been successfully developed and is installed at various observatories of the institute. The 1 nT version is a manual operated PPM commissioned in the institute observatories to record the absolute geomagnetic field and …
Efficient Planning Of Resources And Utilization Of Alternative Building Materials And Techniques For A Residential Construction Project, V Srinivasa Raghavan
Efficient Planning Of Resources And Utilization Of Alternative Building Materials And Techniques For A Residential Construction Project, V Srinivasa Raghavan
Manipal Journal of Science and Technology
Major research efforts are being focused on the significant usage of the alternative building materials, techniques, and on resource optimization for improving the effectiveness of cost and time of a construction project. Unless proper resources are planned and procured, no activity can be executed according to a prefixed time schedule. Project managers must take complex decisions under uncertainty conditions that sometimes extend beyond task durations. This paper provides an overview of the study dealings with the usage of alternative building materials, techniques, and resource optimization. The study has been carried out as two parts. In the first part, factors affecting …
Human-Bear Interactions Among Black Bears In Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, And Polar Bears On Alaska's North Slope, Wesley G. Larson
Human-Bear Interactions Among Black Bears In Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, And Polar Bears On Alaska's North Slope, Wesley G. Larson
Theses and Dissertations
Human-bear interactions are an important consideration of bear biology, as interactions can lead to destruction of property as well as injury or death for both human and bear. Successful analysis of why these interactions occur can lead to appropriate preventative measures and mitigation of further conflict. Bryce Canyon National Park (BRCA) is comprised of relatively poor bear habitat, but a black bear population exists on the Paunsaugunt Plateau, on which the park occupies the eastern edge. Park managers expressed interest in learning more about bear movements and, specifically, bear use of anthropogenic features following a number of human-bear incidents located …

Singlet exciton fission (SF), the conversion of one spin-singlet exciton (S1) into two spin-triplet excitons (T1), could provide a means to overcome the Shockley–Queisser limit in photovoltaics. SF as measured by the decay of S1 has been shown to occur efficiently and independently of temperature, even when the energy of S1 is as much as 200 meV less than that of 2T1. Here we study films of triisopropylsilyltetracene using transient optical spectroscopy and show that the triplet pair state (TT), which has been proposed to mediate singlet fission, forms on ultrafast timescales …

© 2017 The Author(s). Plant-microbe interactions play crucial roles in species invasions but are rarely investigated at the intraspecific level. Here, we study these interactions in three lineages of a globally distributed plant, Phragmites australis. We use field surveys and a common garden experiment to analyze bacterial communities in the rhizosphere of P. australis stands from native, introduced, and Gulf lineages to determine lineage-specific controls on rhizosphere bacteria. We show that within-lineage bacterial communities are similar, but are distinct among lineages, which is consistent with our results in a complementary common garden experiment. Introduced P. australis rhizosphere bacterial communities have …

© 2017 John Wiley & Sons Ltd/CNRS The pervasive idea that species should be most abundant in the centre of their geographic range or centre of their climatic niche is a key assumption in many existing ecological hypotheses and has been declared a general macroecological rule. However, empirical support for decreasing population abundance with increasing distance from geographic range or climatic niche centre (distance–abundance relationships) remains fairly weak. We examine over 1400 bird, mammal, fish and tree species to provide a thorough test of distance–abundance relationships, and their associations with species traits and phylogenetic relationships. We failed to detect consistent …

In the current study, these YY1 binding sites were mutated to characterize the unknown roles in the mouse Peg3 domain. According to the results, paternal and maternal transmission of the mutant allele did not cause any major effect on the survival of the pups. In the mutants, the maternal-specific DNA methylation on the ICR was properly established and maintained, causing no major effect on the imprinting of the domain. In contrast, the paternal transmission resulted …

© 2017 by The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc. STAT5 proteins play a role in adipocyte development and function, but their specific functions are largely unknown. To this end, we used an unbiased MS-based approach to identify novel STAT5-interacting proteins. We observed that STAT5A bound the E1 and E2 subunits of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC). Whereas STAT5A typically localizes to the cytosol or nucleus, PDC normally resides within the mitochondrial matrix where it converts pyruvate to acetyl-CoA. We employed affinity purification and immunoblotting to validate the interaction between STAT5A and PDC subunits in murine and human …

To assess the metabolically beneficial effects of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum), C57BL/6J mice were fed a low- or high-fat diet for 16 weeks with or without 2% (w/w) fenugreek supplementation. Body weight, body composition, energy expenditure, food intake, and insulin/glucose tolerance were measured regularly, and tissues were collected for histological and biochemical analysis after 16 weeks of diet exposure. Fenugreek did not alter body weight, fat mass, or food intake in either group, but did transiently improve glucose tolerance in high fat-fed mice. Fenugreek also significantly improved high-density lipoprotein to low-density lipoprotein ratios in high fat-fed mice …

Inhalational MtbΔsigH, a stress-response–attenuated strain, protected against lethal TB in macaques. While live mycobacterial vaccines show promising efficacy, HIV co-infection and the resulting immunodeficiency prompts safety concerns about their use. We assessed the persistence and safety of MtbΔsigH, delivered directly to the lungs, in the setting of HIV co-infection. Macaques were aerosol-vaccinated with ΔsigH and subsequently challenged with SIVmac239. Bronchoalveolar lavage and tissues were sampled for mycobacterial persistence, pathology, and immune …

© 2017. Published by The Company of Biologists Ltd. Journal of Experimental Biology. Mouth brooding is an extreme form of parental care in which the brooding parent carries the developing young in their buccal cavity for the duration of development. Brooding fish need to compensate for the brood weight on the anterior portion of their body. For fishes with a compartmentalized swim bladder, gas distribution between the chambers may aid in regulating buoyancy during brooding. To test this hypothesis, we took radiographs of Astatotilapia burtoni to compare the swim bladder morphology of gravid, mouth-brooding and recovering females. Following spawning, females …

© 2017 The Obesity Society Objective: Intramyocellular lipid (IMCL) is inversely related to insulin sensitivity in sedentary populations, yet no prospective studies in humans have examined IMCL accumulation with overfeeding. Methods: Twenty-nine males were overfed a high-fat diet (140% caloric intake, 44% from fat) for 8 weeks. Measures of IMCL, whole-body fat oxidation from a 24-hour metabolic chamber, muscle protein extracts, and muscle ceramide measures were obtained before and after the intervention. Results: Eight weeks of overfeeding did not increase overall IMCL. The content of smaller lipid droplets peripherally located in the myofiber decreased, while increases in larger droplets correlated …

In the market for US theatrical movies, there are a set of products (movies), and over time, new products appear and existing products disappear. We develop and estimate a model of the product cycle for movies and the decay of products over time to examine the effect of product quality, production cost, advertising and substitutes on the movie life cycle. Intuitively, new products should have a strong negative effect on the probability of survival of existing movies. The effect, however, is heterogeneously present only for the substitutes from some types (genres). While it is expected that good-quality movies tend to …

The principle of design is to create something both beautiful and effective. However, not all designs are created equal. There are plenty of inefficient designs in existence. The reason is not because of bad designers, but because of the lacking platforms for designers to communicate and test their designs.
There are many tools available, both application and website, for designers to express their ideas. However, the majority of these resources are focused on sharing project on the social media and treat it like an element of personal portfolio. Platforms for designers to actually test their project, gathering critical product-developing feedback …

Vibrio Vulnificus Monitoring Along The Coastal Bend And The Rio Grande Valley, Texas, Louay Bachnak
Honors Theses
Vibrio vulnificus is a common opportunistic pathogen found in marine, coastal, and estuarine waters. This one micrometer microorganism is the leading cause of deaths in the United States due to food poisoning after consumption of raw or undercooked seafood. The optimal temperature for survival is between 15.6°C and 35.0°C with moderate salinities – conditions frequently found in the Gulf of Mexico (Lin, Payne, & Schwarz, 2003).
In the United States, V. vulnificus infections are more common in states bordering the Gulf of Mexico, including Texas. However, infections can still occur in individuals consuming infected food more inland or sustain wounds …

Multiple assessment studies demonstrate that juvenile offenders are at increased risk for contracting HIV and other STIs relative to their non-offending counterparts. Such data are used to support the implementation of adolescent HIV prevention interventions within the juvenile justice system. Despite the compelling data related to high rates of unprotected sexual activity, pregnancy, STIs, substance use and psychiatric symptoms, there are very few empirically supported HIV prevention interventions for this adolescent subgroup. Using our experience conducting HIV prevention research studies with court-involved, non-incarcerated (CINI) youth we identify salient and unique challenges to consider when conducting HIV prevention intervention research with …

Since the Supreme Court decided that the Affordable Care Act's (ACA) Medicaid expansion is optional for the states, several have obtained federal approval to use Section 1115 waivers to expand Medicaid while changing its coverage and benefits design. There has long been concern that policy making for Medicaid populations may lack meaningful engagement with low-income constituents, and therefore the ACA established a new process under which the public can submit comments on pending Medicaid waiver applications. We analyzed 291 comment letters submitted to federal regulators pertaining to Medicaid Section 1115 waiver applications in the first five states to seek such …
