Exploring The Value Of Citation Management Tools In The Academic Library, Julia Glauberman Dec 2017

Exploring The Value Of Citation Management Tools In The Academic Library, Julia Glauberman

Library Scholarship

The vast majority of the literature on citation management software focuses on making comparisons and providing recommendations. Even articles that go beyond Consumer Reports-style product reviews lack any critical analysis of the relationships between libraries and the vendors who design and sell citation management tools. Librarians communicate with these vendors in order to get technical assistance, report bugs, provide feedback on the product, and make feature requests. In this context, the relationship between librarian and vendor is that of customer and merchant. However, libraries that pay for expensive citation management software subscriptions must market these tools to students and …

Random Coefficient Continuous Systems: Testing For Extreme Sample Path Behaviour, Yubo Tao, Peter C.B. Phillips, Jun Yu Dec 2017

Random Coefficient Continuous Systems: Testing For Extreme Sample Path Behaviour, Yubo Tao, Peter C.B. Phillips, Jun Yu

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper studies a continuous time dynamic system with a random persistence parameter. The exact discrete time representation is obtained and related to several discrete time random coefficient models currently in the literature. The model distinguishes various forms of unstable and explosive behaviour according to specific regions of the parameter space that open up the potential for testing these forms of extreme behaviour. A two-stage approach that employs realized volatility is proposed for the continuous system estimation, asymptotic theory is developed, and test statistics to identify the different forms of extreme sample path behaviour are proposed. Simulations show that the …

Hybrid Stochastic Local Unit Roots, Offer Lieberman, Peter C.B. Phillips Dec 2017

Hybrid Stochastic Local Unit Roots, Offer Lieberman, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Two approaches have dominated formulations designed to capture small departures from unit root autoregressions. The first involves deterministic departures that include local-to-unity (LUR) and mildly (or moderately) integrated (MI) specifications where departures shrink to zero as the sample size n→∞. The second approach allows for stochastic departures from unity, leading to stochastic unit root (STUR) specifications. This paper introduces a hybrid local stochastic unit root (LSTUR) specification that has both LUR and STUR components and allows for endogeneity in the time varying coefficient that introduces structural elements to the autoregression. This hybrid model generates trajectories that, upon normalization, have non-linear …

Training Interpreters And Translators In Spain’S Asylum And Refugee Office (Oar): A Case Study, Carmen Valero Garcés

International Journal of Interpreter Education

The process of applying for asylum has been the primary focus of various legal studies and research programs. Numerous articles dealing with language and communication problems have recently emerged, revealing some of the adversities that interpreters and translators face when working in asylum and refugee settings. This study explores some of the issues and complexities surrounding the interpreting and translation services provided by the Spanish Asylum and Refugee Office (OAR). It also analyzes the experiences of several graduate students—and their respective mentors—during their time spent interning at the OAR. The conclusions drawn based on these experiences can act as a …

The Cost Of Experiencing Everyday Legal Problems Related To Physical And Mental Health, Lisa Moore, Ab Currie, Nicole Aylwin, Trevor C. W. Farrow, Paul Di Libero

Canadian Forum on Civil Justice

In 2016, spending on health care in Canada amounted to approximately $228.1 billion (or an average of $6,299 per person). In several provinces and territories health care spending per capita surpassed $7,000. These amounts represent a significant economic commitment to spending on health care. And while many of the costs associated with maintaining and providing health care are unavoidable, there are also many external factors that adversely affect physical and mental health that, if addressed, can offer avenues for reduced spending and contribute to quality of life. This summary report explores the relationship between health issues, civil and family justice …

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Technology roadmapping (TRM) has been recognized as an effective and flexible technology planning tool to assist company, industry, or nations to layout their strategic technology needs and align their vision and strategic objectives. Technology roadmap have been developed into various types and formats, by means of generic or customized processes, to suit specific organizational requirement in different industry settings such as energy sector. However, evaluating the effectiveness of roadmapping process remains a critical issue for roadmap updating and improvement. This paper proposes a benchmark approach based on a literature review to help develop a comparative model with required checklists.

Design And Analysis Of A Mechanical Driveline With Generator For An Atmospheric Energy Harvester, Sneha Ganesh Dec 2017

Design And Analysis Of A Mechanical Driveline With Generator For An Atmospheric Energy Harvester, Sneha Ganesh

All Theses

The advent of renewable energy as a primary power source for microelectronic devices has motivated research within the energy harvesting community over the past decade. Compact, self-contained, portable energy harvesters can be applied to wireless sensor networks, Internet of Things (IoT) smart appliances, and a multitude of standalone equipment; replacing batteries and improving the operational life of such systems. Atmospheric changes influenced by cyclical temporal variations offer an abundance of harvestable thermal energy. However, the low conversion efficiency of a common thermoelectric device does not tend to be practical for microcircuit operations. One solution may lie in a novel electromechanical …

The Relationship Between The Emotional Intelligence Of Entrepreneurs And The New Venture Creation: The Role Of Age, Gender And Motive, Hadia Fakhreldin Dec 2017

The Relationship Between The Emotional Intelligence Of Entrepreneurs And The New Venture Creation: The Role Of Age, Gender And Motive, Hadia Fakhreldin

Business Administration

The study investigates the effect of emotional intelligence (EI) of entrepreneurs on new venture creation (NVC). A self-administered questionnaire is used to test the study hypothesis on a sample of 378 Egyptian entrepreneurs. The analysis shows that there is a significant relationship between emotional intelligence and new venture creation. There are three constructs of EI (interpersonal skills, internal motivation and self-awareness), which support the creation of new ventures. The results of the empirical study are validated using demographic characteristics (age and gender) and the motivation of entrepreneurship (necessity-driven or opportunity-driven). The findings show that age has a moderating effect on …

Stakeholders’ Understanding Of Family Engagement In An Urban School: A Qualitative Study, Lorette Mcwilliams Dec 2017

Stakeholders’ Understanding Of Family Engagement In An Urban School: A Qualitative Study, Lorette Mcwilliams

Educational Studies Dissertations

Family involvement and engagement in children's education has been a part of the educational landscape in the US for several decades. Research indicates family engagement, broadly defined as activities carried out by an adult in support of a child's educational development, has many benefits such as individual student achievement, as well as less traditional outcomes such as behavioral and mental health benefits, better school attendance, high school graduation rates, and secondary school enrollment. Family engagement has been included in federal education policy since the 1960s and continues in today's policies. However, teachers and parents often maintain different perspectives and …

Continuous Workout Mortgages: Efficient Pricing And Systemic Implications, Robert J. Shiller, Rafal M. Wojakowski, M. Shahid Ebrahim, Mark B. Shackleton

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper studies the Continuous Workout Mortgage (CWM), a two in one product: a fixed rate home loan coupled with negative equity insurance, to advocate its viability in mitigating financial fragility. In order to tackle the many issues that CWMs embrace, we perform a range of tasks. We optimally price CWMs and take a systemic market-based approach, stipulating that mortgage values and payments should be linked to housing prices and adjusted downward to prevent negative equity. We illustrate that amortizing CWMs can be the efficient home financing choice for many households. We price CWMs as American option style, defaulting debt …

Finite-Sample Optimal Estimation And Inference On Average Treatment Effects Under Unconfoundedness, Timothy B. Armstrong, Michal Kolesár Dec 2017

Finite-Sample Optimal Estimation And Inference On Average Treatment Effects Under Unconfoundedness, Timothy B. Armstrong, Michal Kolesár

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We consider estimation and inference on average treatment effects under unconfoundedness conditional on the realizations of the treatment variable and covariates. We derive finite-sample optimal estimators and confidence intervals (CIs) under the assumption of normal errors when the conditional mean of the outcome variable is constrained only by nonparametric smoothness and/or shape restrictions. When the conditional mean is restricted to be Lipschitz with a large enough bound on the Lipschitz constant, we show that the optimal estimator reduces to a matching estimator with the number of matches set to one. In contrast to conventional CIs, our CIs use a larger …

Given nonparametric smoothness and/or shape restrictions on the conditional mean of the outcome variable, we derive estimators and confidence intervals (CIs) that are optimal infinite samples when the regression errors are normal with known variance. In contrast to conventional CIs, our CIs use a larger critical value that explicitly takes into account the potential bias of the estimator. When the error distribution is unknown, feasible versions of our CIs are valid asymptotically, even when √n-inference is not possible due …

As Technologies For Nucleotide Therapeutics Mature, Products Emerge, Jennifer M. Beierlein, Laura M. Mcnamee, Fred D. Ledley

Natural & Applied Sciences Faculty Publications

The long path from initial research on oligonucleotide therapies to approval of antisense products is not unfamiliar. This lag resembles those encountered with monoclonal antibodies, gene therapies, and many biological targets and is consistent with studies of innovation showing that technology maturation is a critical determinant of product success. We previously described an analytical model for the maturation of biomedical research, demonstrating that the efficiency of targeted and biological development is connected to metrics of technology growth. The present work applies this model to characterize the advance of oligonucleotide therapeutics. We show that recent oligonucleotide product approvals incorporate technologies and …

Sexting: Current Research Gaps And Legislative Issues, Fawn T. Ngo, J. Jaishankar, Jose R. Agustina

Criminology Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications

'Sexting, the portmanteau of Sex and Texting, has become a hot topic of debate between the legislators, researchers, educators, parents and teens' (Jaishankar, 2009, para 1). In spite of the considerable and growing body of literature on sexting, there are significant gaps in the current research. A review of research to date also reveals a dearth of cross-national and cross-cultural research on the topic of sexting. Notably, legal and ethical issues abound with the current method for punishing and deterring adolescents who engage in sexting as some countries view sexting as a form of child pornography. Hence, the imperative need …

Rheological Properties Considering The Effect Of Aggregates On Concrete Slump Flow, Tae Yong Shin, Jae Hong Kim, Seong Ho Han Dec 2017

Rheological Properties Considering The Effect Of Aggregates On Concrete Slump Flow, Tae Yong Shin, Jae Hong Kim, Seong Ho Han

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Rheology of concrete allows us to understand the flow behavior of concrete and further extend the quantitative evaluation of its construction performance. The use of a concrete rheometer is promising for the purpose but sometimes limited high associated cost and procedure complexity. This study proposes a simulation-based model that correlates the slump flow test results to a concrete's rheological properties, allowing quantitative evaluation through this simple method. The proposed model is based on single-fluid simulation using the volume-of-fluid method, with an extension to accommodate the partial segregation of coarse aggregates. Either the channel flow or the L-shaped panel filling of …

Analyzing Young Readers' Empathetic Responses To A Mexican American Historical Narrative, Yvette Rivera Dec 2017

Analyzing Young Readers' Empathetic Responses To A Mexican American Historical Narrative, Yvette Rivera

Theses and Dissertations

Empathy and cultural understanding of groups that are marginalized due to religious, ethnic or sexual background is essential for peace in schools, neighborhoods, and society at large. Literacy classrooms can be a safe environment in which students can develop their own understandings and empathies. Although worthwhile, much of the research lacks details of student reactions to the people and cultures read about in historical narratives, as well as a focus on pedagogical practices that could give students a deep understanding of the culture. This study analyzed the empathetic responses of 13 sixth grade students to themes presented in a Mexican …
