Recent Federal Case Spotlights School’S Concussion Protocol, Charles J. Russo, Susan C. Davies
Recent Federal Case Spotlights School’S Concussion Protocol, Charles J. Russo, Susan C. Davies
Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications
High school football players are nearly twice as likely to sustain a concussion as college players, according to a recent study by the Institute of Medicine and funded by the NFL. As such, it’s important for schools to have concussion protocols for student-athletes injured during play. A recent case, Mann v. Palmerton Area School District, 117 LRP 40825 (3d Cir. 09/21/17), highlights the importance of having school concussion management and prevention policies in place for student-athletes. After a football player in Pennsylvania demonstrated concussion-like symptoms following a hard hit during practice in November 2011, his coach took him out of …

A Miniature Acoustic Device For Tracking Small Marine Animals Or Submerged Drifters, Godi Fischer, Thomas Rossby, Daniel Moonan
Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper presents an acoustic archival tag capable of tracking small marine animals. It is also a technology that can be ported to other platforms, such as the next-generation acoustic and Argo floats as well as gliders. Tracking is achieved by standard RAFOS triangulation using the arrival times of unique sound signals emitted by moored sources. At the core of the tag is a custom microchip that controls all system operations. It incorporates the critical acoustic arrival time detector, a thermal sensor, and a pressure sensor interface. All the electronic components are housed inside a cylindrical hydrophone of 25.4-mm length …
Diatom Community Response To An Acidic, Ambient Temperature, Geothermal Gradient, April Fox
Diatom Community Response To An Acidic, Ambient Temperature, Geothermal Gradient, April Fox
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Geothermally influenced surface waters are typically linked to high temperatures; however, they can also be associated with ambient temperature and have the distinct solute chemistry that identifies them as geothermal in origin. Few studies have been linked to diatom assemblages in ambient temperature, geothermally influenced waters. This study focused on the Sulphur Creek watershed in the Valles Caldera National Preserve, northern New Mexico. Seven representative sites were sampled monthly between May 2016-September 2016 for physicochemical parameters and diatom community composition. Ambient temperature waters with high conductivities, lower pH values (≤ 4.0), and increased Al+++, Fe++, SO4=, and SiO2 concentrations are …

The dissertation focuses on the histopathology image analysis for cancer diagnosis and prognosis, based on the innovation of histopathological machine vision techniques. Histopathology images are regarded as the reference standard to identify diseases, and especially as a gold standard on cancer diagnosis. With the recent advance of the electronic scanners, digitized whole slide images (WSI) make it possible to analyze cancer tissues in high resolution and large-scale manner. At the same time, computer aided diagnosis (CAD) algorithms are being developed to detect cancer automatically, both in radiological and pathological field. However, those CAD algorithms are based on object segmentation and …
The Biochemical And Structural Characterization Of Insulin Receptor And Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 Receptor, Richard Delle Bovi
The Biochemical And Structural Characterization Of Insulin Receptor And Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 Receptor, Richard Delle Bovi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The insulin receptor (IR) and insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R) are receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) involved in the regulation of many important cellular processes. Hyperactivity of IR and IGF1R is associated with cancer, whereas low IR activity and insulin resistance are linked to diabetes. The current proposed models of activation are derived from structural studies using either soluble extracellular domains or cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase domains. Although these structures have provided a wealth of information about the IR, there is still a significant disconnect in our understanding of the transmembrane signaling mechanism. Only studies on intact, membrane-spanning, full-length, holoreceptors can …
Investigation Of Adenovirus Early Protein E4orf3 Defense Against Host Cell Responses, Coryn Marie Cange
Investigation Of Adenovirus Early Protein E4orf3 Defense Against Host Cell Responses, Coryn Marie Cange
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Viruses have evolved many tactics to ensure robust infection and proliferation. Similarly, human adenovirus employs such techniques that include direct sequestration of cellular antiviral proteins and modulation of host cellular pathways. The viral protein E4ORF3 plays a critical role in carrying out these functions during infection. This protein is unique in its ability to form a nuclear scaffold during infection, which then serves as an interface for cellular protein binding. It has been previously shown that E4ORF3 is responsible for the reorganization of critical antiviral cellular proteins including MRN and TRIM family proteins. Also, it has been established that the …

Defining The Rules Of Substrate Recognition For A Mitochondrial Aaa+ Protease, Anthony John Rampello
Defining The Rules Of Substrate Recognition For A Mitochondrial Aaa+ Protease, Anthony John Rampello
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The i-AAA protease is a membrane-anchored ATP-dependent protease that contributes to proteostasis of the mitochondrial inner membrane and intermembrane space. The protease is required to select specific substrates for degradation from among the diverse complement of proteins present in mitochondria, yet the molecular mechanisms of substrate recognition have yet to be fully described. Importantly, dysfunction of the mitochondrial AAA proteases has been implicated in the development of numerous neurodegenerative diseases. Detailed solution studies of these enzymes have been hampered by the requirement for an insoluble transmembrane span to drive hexamerization and thus form the ATPase active sites. By replacing the …
Glycan Type Specificity In N-Linked Glycosylation: Implications For Highly Glycosylated Viral Surface Proteins, Artem Krantesvich
Glycan Type Specificity In N-Linked Glycosylation: Implications For Highly Glycosylated Viral Surface Proteins, Artem Krantesvich
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Virtually every living cell is covered with glycoproteins. Most mammalian glycoproteins primarily bear N-linked glycans of complex type, having only a small fraction of hybrid glycans and barely any high-mannose glycans. However, some highly glycosylated proteins translated in mammalian cells have an unusually high fraction of high-mannose glycans. The goal of this thesis is to investigate the nature of the mechanisms behind this unusual distribution of glycan types and glycan type specificity for glycosylation sites. A well-studied example of the abnormally glycosylated protein is HIV envelope glycoprotein gp120, which usually has about 24 glycans, approximately half of them being of …

The discovery of useful or worthwhile process models must be performed with due regards to the transformation that needs to be achieved. The blend of the data representations (i.e data mining) and process modelling methods, often allied to the field of Process Mining (PM), has proven to be effective in the process analysis of the event logs readily available in many organisations information systems. Moreover, the Process Discovery has been lately seen as the most important and most visible intellectual challenge related to the process mining. The method involves automatic construction of process models from event logs about any domain …

Are Csr Activities Associated With Shareholder Voting In Director Elections And Say-On-Pay Votes?, Charles Cullinan, Lois S. Mahoney, Pamela B. Roush
Accounting Department Faculty Journal Articles
When making investment decisions, many investors now regularly consider a company’s CSR activities along with traditional financial performance measures (Elliott et al., 2014). Our study considers whether shareholders may also consider CSR activities when voting in director elections and say-on-pay votes. We find that CSR performance is associated with shareholder support in both director elections and say-on-pay votes. In particular, we find higher support for both director elections and executive compensation when there are more CSR strengths. Additionally, we find that the social strength aspect of CSR is the most important component in the relationships between CSR and director elections …

Effects Of Atomic Oxygen On The Vacuum-Induced Mass Loss Properties Of A Variety Of Spacecraft Materials, Tyler Harty
Effects Of Atomic Oxygen On The Vacuum-Induced Mass Loss Properties Of A Variety Of Spacecraft Materials, Tyler Harty
Master's Theses
The space environment influences spacecraft design and material selection in many ways. Two aspects of the space environment that were of interest for this research are the vacuum and atomic oxygen (AO) environments. This project used the outgassing testing chamber and the AO chamber in the Cal Poly Space Environments lab to test multiple common spacecraft materials and determine whether AO affects the outgassing properties of those materials. This research has relevant applications in the design and material selection for spacecraft in low-Earth orbits. AO and outgassing are both known to be individual contributors of spacecraft material mass loss and …
Whitespace Exploration, Jason Lloyd Daniel
Whitespace Exploration, Jason Lloyd Daniel
Master's Theses
As engineering systems grow in complexity so too must the design tools that we use evolve and allow for decision makers to efficiently ask questions of their model and obtain meaningful answers. The process of whitespace exploration has recently been developed to aid in engineering design and provide insight into a design space where traditional design exploration methods may fail. In an effort to further the research and development of whitespace exploration algorithms, a software package called Thalia has been created to allow for automated data collection and experimentation with the whitespace exploration methodology.
In this work, whitespace exploration is …
Rf Front End For An Integrated Silhouette Capture And Boundary Detection Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave Ultra-Wideband Radar System For The Extension Of Independent Living, Adrian Smet

Eeg Characterization During Motor Tasks That Are Difficult For Movement Disorder Patients, Adam Joshua Aslam
Eeg Characterization During Motor Tasks That Are Difficult For Movement Disorder Patients, Adam Joshua Aslam
Master's Theses
Movement disorders are a group of syndromes that often arise due to neurological abnormalities. Approximately 40 million Americans are affected by some form of movement disorder, significantly impacting patients’ quality of life and their ability to live independently. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is one treatment that has shown promising results in the past couple decades, however, the currently used open-loop system has several drawbacks. By implementing a closed-loop or adaptive DBS (aDBS) system, the need for expensive parameter reprogramming sessions would be reduced, side-effects may be relieved, and habituation could be avoided. Several biomarkers, for example signals or activity derived …

Interfacing A Hirudo Medicinalis Retzius Cell With Insulated Gate Of Mosfet, Rachel M. Smith
Master's Theses
Much work has been done to study the external stimulation of nervous tissue as well as the transmission of neural signals to electronics. Peter Fromherz was one of the pioneers in this area of electrophysiology, with a series of experiments in the 1990s that aimed to characterize and optimize the interface between neural tissue and transistors. In this thesis, Kurt Sjoberg and I interfaced a Retzius cell isolated from a Hirudo medicinalis ganglion with the insulated gate of a MOSFET. The goal was to see change in membrane potential that could be related Fromherz’s original 1991 work. Our experimental setup …

Repeated Observations Of Northern Goshawks Foraging As Terrestrial Predators, Robert A. Miller
Repeated Observations Of Northern Goshawks Foraging As Terrestrial Predators, Robert A. Miller
Intermountain Bird Observatory Publications and Presentations
The Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis; hereafter goshawk) is a generalist predator occupying boreal and temperate forests of the Holarctic (Squires and Reynolds 1997). The diet of goshawks has been studied in many areas and varies substantially among study sites, but some avian and mammalian genera are consistently represented (Squires and Reynolds 1997, Squires and Kennedy 2006). Within the northern Great Basin of North America, the breeding-season diet of goshawks is often dominated by Belding's ground squirrels (Urocitellus beldingi, also known as Spermophilus beldingi; Younk and Bechard 1994, Miller et al. 2014). The local reliance upon …
