Cost-Effectiveness Of Using Standardized Patients To Assess Student-Pharmacist Communication Skills, Chris Gillette, Robert B. Stanton, Nicole Rockich-Winston, Michael Rudolph, H. Glenn Anderson Jr. Dec 2017

Cost-Effectiveness Of Using Standardized Patients To Assess Student-Pharmacist Communication Skills, Chris Gillette, Robert B. Stanton, Nicole Rockich-Winston, Michael Rudolph, H. Glenn Anderson Jr.

Pharmacy Practice & Administration

Objective. To explore the cost-effectiveness of including standardized patients (SP) in the didactic curriculum for application and assessment of students’ pharmacist-patient communication skills.

Methods. Five role play/case study (RP/CS) activities from a communication skills curriculum were replaced with five SP encounters. Communication was assessed using a rubric. This study developed an economic model to examine the costs and effectiveness of replacing RP/CS events with SP events in knowledge-application and communication assessment. Costs consisted of SP hourly wages for training and delivery of SP events. Outcomes examined were the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) per student.

Results. The ICER comparing SP to …

Socializing With The Out-Group: Testing The Contact Hypothesis Among School Students In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Matthew Thomas Becker Dec 2017

Socializing With The Out-Group: Testing The Contact Hypothesis Among School Students In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Matthew Thomas Becker

Faculty and Student Publications

The purpose of this article is to test the contact hypothesis among self-identifying Bosniak, Croat, Serb, and Bosnian high school seniors in Bosnia and Herzegovina, using the Other-Group Orientation Scale (Roberts et al., 1999). This article finds that attending a ‘non-appropriate’ ethnic school statistically increases tolerance of out-group members, which conforms to the predictions of the contact hypothesis, originally put forth by Allport (1958). This field research also found that secondary schools are largely homogenous in the country, thus preventing high levels of cross-ethnic contact in schools, which was expected. This article represents the first post-war, countrywide quantitative testing of …

Clinical And Serological Features Of Systemic Sclerosis In A Multicenter African American Cohort: Analysis Of The Genome Research In African American Scleroderma Patients Clinical Database, Nadia Morgan, Ami Shah, Maureen Mayes, Robyn Domsic, Thomas Medsger, Victoria K. Shanmugam, +Several Additional Authors

Medicine Faculty Publications

Racial differences exist in the severity of systemic sclerosis (SSc). To enhance our knowledge about SSc in African Americans, we established a comprehensive clinical database from the largest multicenter cohort of African American SSc patients assembled to date (the Genome Research in African American Scleroderma Patients (GRASP) cohort).

African American SSc patients were enrolled retrospectively and prospectively over a 30-year period (1987–2016), from 18 academic centers throughout the United States. The cross-sectional prevalence of sociodemographic, clinical, and serological features was evaluated. Factors associated with clinically significant manifestations of SSc were assessed using multivariate logistic regression analyses.

The study population included …

Medicine Faculty Publications

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is set to become the third most frequent cause of death and also the third largest cause of global morbidity by 2020. In China, where the population is aging rapidly, COPD has become one of the leading causes of disability and a large economic burden. An epidemiological assessment of the COPD in China is required, with a focus on the number of cases living with disease, main determinants of the disease and time trends.

Methods: We systematically searched large Chinese bibliographic databases and English databases to identify spirometry-based epidemiological studies of the prevalence of …

An Evaluation Of The Cost Of Family Law Disputes: Measuring The Cost Implication Of Various Dispute Resolution Methods, Joanne J. Paetsch, Lorne D. Bertrand, John-Paul E. Boyd Dec 2017

An Evaluation Of The Cost Of Family Law Disputes: Measuring The Cost Implication Of Various Dispute Resolution Methods, Joanne J. Paetsch, Lorne D. Bertrand, John-Paul E. Boyd

Canadian Forum on Civil Justice

The Canadian Forum on Civil Justice contracted the Canadian Research Institute for Law and the Family to conduct a project measuring the cost implications of various dispute resolution methods for resolving family law disputes. Despite the greater emphasis in recent years on the importance of access to justice and the need to resolve family matters outside the court, there is little research on the effectiveness of various dispute resolution methods, and even less on the cost of the different approaches.

Investigating The Possible Effects Of State Takeover On Teacher Self-Efficacy In Low-Performing, Low-Ses School Districts In Arkansas, Pasty Ann Hughey

Theses and Dissertations from 2017

The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in teachers’ level of self-efficacy based on the state takeover status of a school district. The design of this study was “group comparison research” (Gall, Gall, & Borg, 2015). The dependent variable was teachers’ level of self-efficacy and the independent variable was state takeover status. Data gathered for this study were teacher demographics and the level of teacher self-efficacy measured by the TSES instrument (Tschannen-Moran & Woolfolk Hoy, 2001). Three school districts in Arkansas were selected and matched on demographic variables and school academic measures. One district had recently been …

Changing Antimalarial Drug Sensitivities In Uganda, Stephanie Alexis Rasmussen Dec 2017

Changing Antimalarial Drug Sensitivities In Uganda, Stephanie Alexis Rasmussen

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DP) has demonstrated excellent efficacy for the treatment and prevention of malaria in Uganda. However, resistance to both components of this regimen has emerged in Southeast Asia. The efficacy of artemether-lumefantrine, the first-line regimen to treat malaria in Uganda, has also been excellent, but continued pressure may select for parasites with decreased sensitivity to lumefantrine. To gain insight into current drug sensitivity patterns, ex vivo sensitivities were assessed and genotypes previously associated with altered drug sensitivity were characterized for 58 isolates collected in Tororo, Uganda from subjects presenting in 2016 with malaria from the community or as part of …

Elementary School Inclusion For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Attitudes Of General Education Teachers, Sarah Wareham Dec 2017

Elementary School Inclusion For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Attitudes Of General Education Teachers, Sarah Wareham

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The emphasis on teaching all students in the general education setting requires school personnel to reimagine the delivery of service for students with disabilities, including those with autism spectrum disorder (autism). This delivery of service relies heavily on the general education teacher’s ability to meet the varying learning needs of his or her students. This study explored if the general education teacher’s attitude toward students with autism in his or her classroom is related to participation of students with autism in the general education classroom as well as collaboration between the general education and special education teacher. These variables and …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study examined middle and high school Black–White–Biracial (BWB) students’ perspectives of education. In order to accomplish this qualitative research study, the research I sought to (a) gain an understanding of how biracial students viewed themselves in secondary public school systems, (b) understand how BWB students identified within the school environment, and (c) learn how their identities affected their learning. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to gain in-depth understanding of the overall educational viewpoints of BWB students in select rural, urban, and suburban public schools in Indiana. The design of this research included data collection from one-on-one …

The Effects Of Secondary School Accountability Grades On College And University Transfer, Jill Robinson Kramer Dec 2017

The Effects Of Secondary School Accountability Grades On College And University Transfer, Jill Robinson Kramer

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Workforce projections indicate that a majority of jobs to be created in the U.S. economy will require some form of postsecondary education (Cappelli, 2015; Carnevale, Smith, & Strohl, 2010). At the same time, colleges and universities are being held accountable for completion and graduation of their students (The Commission, 2014) and secondary schools are being graded under changing accountability systems (Center for Education Policy, 2008; Dee & Jacobs, 2011, Figlio & Ladd, 2008). This study looked at the longer-term implications of high school accountability grades, A–F, and the impact on student transfer, associate’s degree completion, and time to associate’s degree …

NERA Conference Proceedings 2017

The purpose of this study was to answer the following question: How does network improvement science (NIS) impact the recruitment and retention of Black and Latino male teachers? Using multiple sources of data such as Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) documents, video recordings of focus group interviews, self-reflections, informal and formal meetings notes and minutes, our preliminary results revealed that recruitment and retention of Black and Latino male teachers is a complex process that require cross campus collaboration of all stakeholders, the challenging of structures of power, and overcoming institutional and professional barriers. This study is situated within the broader context of the …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Acoustic Measures Of English Prosody And Holistic Measures Of English Proficiency In Extemporaneous Speech Of Native Chinese Speakers Of English As A Second Language, Carl Tyler Johnson Dec 2017

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Acoustic Measures Of English Prosody And Holistic Measures Of English Proficiency In Extemporaneous Speech Of Native Chinese Speakers Of English As A Second Language, Carl Tyler Johnson

Open Access Dissertations

English prosody works as a structural and semantic glue that establishes relationships among words and phrases within a sentence, and among sentences within a larger discourse. This dissertation hypothesizes and demonstrates an association between acoustic measurements of English prosody and holistic measures of English proficiency. To test this hypothesis, acoustic data was used from 10 examinees each of low, medium, and high oral English proficiency groups of L1 Chinese speakers who took Purdue’s Oral English Proficiency Test (OEPT). Prosodic measurements of duration, F0, and intensity were gathered from adjacent function and content words in the OEPT audio data and compared …

Experimental Study On An Unsteady Pressure Gain Combustion Hypergolic Rocket Engine Concept, Brandon K. Kan

Open Access Dissertations

An experimental study is conducted to investigate pulsed combustion in a lab-scale bipropellant rocket engine using hypergolic propellants. The propellant combination is high concentration hydrogen peroxide and a catalyst-laced triglyme fuel. A total of 50 short duration firings have been conducted; the vast majority in an open-chamber configuration. High amplitude pulsations were evident in nearly all cases and have been assessed with high frequency pressure measurements. Both pintle and unlike impinging quadlet injector types have been evaluated although the bulk of the testing was with the latter configuration. Several firings were conducted with a transparent chamber in an attempt to …

Depreciation In The U.S. Used Tractor Market: The Roles Of Brand And Technology, Nathan Daninger Dec 2017

Depreciation In The U.S. Used Tractor Market: The Roles Of Brand And Technology, Nathan Daninger

A significant factor that currently limits exploration of Mars is the limited payload mass that can be safely placed on the Martian surface. Current systems have only demonstrated successful landing of up to 2 metric tons of payload mass on Mars as seen with the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL). Requirements for future manned missions to Mars will probably require up to 40 metric tons of payload mass in a single descent vehicle. While inflatable and rigid aerodynamic decelerators provide a solution to this problem, supersonic retro-propulsion (SRP) boasts greater simplicity of design as well as improved targeting control. Furthermore, descent …

Achtus/Bcts Joint Statement: Racist Hate Crimes In The United States, Black Catholic Theological Symposium, Academy Of Catholic Hispanic Theologians Of The United States

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

In the wake of the horrific events of Charlottesville Va. on August 11-12, 2017, and the deeply troubling displays of hate speech, neo-Nazi and white supremacist ideologies, the recent pardoning of former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, and the battle over the “sanctuary cities” law in Texas, the leadership of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the United States (ACHTUS) and the Black Catholic Theological Symposium (BCTS) stand in solidarity as one body, with one voice to condemn the systemic violence, racism and legitimized hatred that diminish the integrity of the United States of America. We call for a united …
