Elemental And Molecular Segregation In Oil Paintings Due To Lead Soap Degradation, Yu Chen Karen Chen-Wiegart, Jaclyn Catalano, Garth J. Williams, Anna Murphy, Yao Yao, Nicholas Zumbulyadis, Silvia A. Centeno, Cecil Dybowski, Juergen Thieme Dec 2017

Elemental And Molecular Segregation In Oil Paintings Due To Lead Soap Degradation, Yu Chen Karen Chen-Wiegart, Jaclyn Catalano, Garth J. Williams, Anna Murphy, Yao Yao, Nicholas Zumbulyadis, Silvia A. Centeno, Cecil Dybowski, Juergen Thieme

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The formation of Pb, Zn, and Cu carboxylates (soaps) has caused visible deterioration in hundreds of oil paintings dating from the 15th century to the present. Through transport phenomena not yet understood, free fatty acids in the oil binding medium migrate through the paint and react with pigments containing heavy metals to form soaps. To investigate the complex correlation among the elemental segregation, types of chemical compounds formed, and possible mechanisms of the reactions, a paint sample cross-section from a 15th century oil painting was examined by synchrotron X-ray techniques. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) microscopy, quantified with elemental correlation density distribution, …

Using Ignatian Pedagogy To Support Faculty-Student Mentoring, Anne H. Reilly Dec 2017

Using Ignatian Pedagogy To Support Faculty-Student Mentoring, Anne H. Reilly

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Faculty mentors teach new skills, offer personal guidance, and act as role models for their students. In addition to professional support, mentors may also serve to encourage their protégés’ personal development and values discernment. Mentoring provides an opportunity to apply the experience reflection action Ignatian paradigm towards student formation, and building a meaningful mentor relationship may offer a transformative experience for students. In addition, many university-sponsored faculty mentor programs directly incorporate Jesuit values of social justice in their missions. One example is the federally-funded TRIO programs that include mentoring to assist low-income individuals and first-generation college students in progressing through …

Amplification Of Earthquake Ground Motions In Washington, Dc, And Implications For Hazard Assessments In Central And Eastern North America, Thomas L. Pratt, J. Wright Horton Jr., Jessica Munoz, Susan E. Hough, Martin C. Chapman, C. Guney Olgun Dec 2017

Amplification Of Earthquake Ground Motions In Washington, Dc, And Implications For Hazard Assessments In Central And Eastern North America, Thomas L. Pratt, J. Wright Horton Jr., Jessica Munoz, Susan E. Hough, Martin C. Chapman, C. Guney Olgun

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The extent of damage in Washington, DC, from the 2011 MW 5.8 Mineral, VA, earthquake was surprising for an epicenter 130 km away; U.S. Geological Survey “Did-You-Feel-It” reports suggest that Atlantic Coastal Plain and other unconsolidated sediments amplified ground motions in the city. We measure this amplification relative to bedrock sites using earthquake signals recorded on a temporary seismometer array. The spectral ratios show strong amplification in the 0.7 to 4 Hz frequency range for sites on sediments. This range overlaps with resonant frequencies of buildings in the city as inferred from their heights, suggesting amplification at frequencies to …

Surrendering To Gender In Education? Complacency And The Woman Leader, Kimberly Clark, Ane T. Johnson

College of Education Departmental Research

The purpose of our study was to better understand the role of gender performance for aspiring school leaders through a reflection of their journey through the administrative pipeline. The transformation of professional aspirations throughout and following the certification process and during employment was also analyzed. Also, the appealing factors of a nontraditional administrative preparation program were evaluated. Using heuristic qualitative methods, women graduates of and expedited certification for educational leadership program participated in focus groups and a select group returned for individual interviews. Coding was employed to analyze the data. Our participants entered into school leadership as a result of …

Multinationals In Emerging Markets: A Test Case Of The Banking Industry In India, Havovi Joshi Dec 2017

Multinationals In Emerging Markets: A Test Case Of The Banking Industry In India, Havovi Joshi

Dissertations and Theses Collection

Multinational firms play a significant role in the world economy, accounting for over 30% of the world stock market value. In the past decade or two, these firms have demonstrated a renewed wave of interest in the Emerging Asian markets. This is not surprising, given the attractive demographics, growing middle class and leapfrogging technology of these markets. But the optimism of these western firms heading eastward often gets quickly subdued by the realisation that these emerging Asian markets are far more complex—or at the very least, different—than western ones. They are more volatile, there is frequently a lack of institutional …

Infinite Free Resolutions And Blowup Algebras, Alessio Sammartano Dec 2017

Infinite Free Resolutions And Blowup Algebras, Alessio Sammartano

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation deals with questions concerning ideals and modules over graded or local noetherian commutative rings. The main results deal with the quantitative analysis of free resolutions, with particular emphasis on infinite ones, and with the structure of blowup algebras of certain determinantal ideals. In Chapter 3 we consider resolutions of ideals containing a regular sequence of powers of variables. Let S be a polynomial ring and R a complete intersection in S defined by pure powers of the variables. We prove that, in the Hilbert scheme parametrizing the closed subschemes of Proj(R) with a fixed Hilbert polynomial ℘, there …

Empirical Analyses Of An Urban Early College High School In The Southeastern United States., Sherry Lynn Lawrence, Dinah Lisa Millsaps, Michael Stephen Newman

College of Education & Human Development Capstone Projects

Research shows that too many students are graduating high school ill-prepared for post-secondary success. The purpose of this capstone was to explore early college in relation to student success. We conducted three independent but related studies that incorporated the perspectives of current students, graduates, and quantitative data. The first study investigated how ECHS graduates described their high school experiences, as well as how those experiences contributed to their college readiness and transition to college. The second study, a narrative analysis, sought to understand the lived academic and social experiences of students currently enrolled in an ECHS. The final study took …

Designing For Human-Machine Collaboration: Smart Hearing Aids As Wearable Technologies, Krista Kennedy Dec 2017

Designing For Human-Machine Collaboration: Smart Hearing Aids As Wearable Technologies, Krista Kennedy

Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition - All Scholarship

This study examines design aspects that shape human/machine collaboration between wearers of smart hearing aids and their networked aids. The Starkey Halo hearing aid and the TruLink iPhone app that facilitates real-time adjustments by the wearer offer a case study in designing for this sort of collaboration and for the wearer’s rhetorical management of disability disclosure in social contexts. Through close textual analysis of the company’s promotional materials for patient and professional audiences as well as interface analysis and autoethnography, I examine the ways that close integration between the wearer, onboard algorithms and hardware, and geolocative telemetry shape everyday interactions …

Building Collaborative Research To Drive Improvement Of West Virginia Health Outcomes, Sally L. Hodder Md, Gary O. Rankin Phd

Pharmaceutical Science and Research

Mortality rates in Appalachia have not declined in recent years as they have for the remainder of the US. Appalachian mortality rates have actually increased. Most counties of southern West Virginia have mortality rates well in excess of the US average. West Virginia ranks at or near the bottom in most U.S. chronic disease categories, with the highest rate of drug overdose deaths and near the highest rates of cancer and cardiovascular mortality. And yet, West Virginia has many dedicated heath care providers, committed to the care of their patients. The West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute (WVCTSI) seeks …

Land Capability Assessment For Expanding Irrigated Horticulture Around Myalup, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia, Dafwa

Resource management technical reports

The Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development (DPIRD, formerly Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia), assessed the suitability of land for expanding irrigated horticulture around Myalup, Western Australia. The assessment builds upon existing soil-landscape mapping produced by van Gool and Kipling (1992), and Barnesby and Proulx-Nixon (2000). This report provides guidance to decision-makers and investors about areas with potential for irrigated horticulture.

The survey area for this assessment is east of Myalup, covering 37 800 hectares (ha). Johnston Road forms the northern boundary and the Brunswick River forms the southern boundary (Figure 1.1). The sandy soils of the …
