Effect Of The Tnr Program On Genetic Diversity Of The Feral Cat Population At Abilene Christian University, Kimery Lin Hankins
Effect Of The Tnr Program On Genetic Diversity Of The Feral Cat Population At Abilene Christian University, Kimery Lin Hankins
Honors College
The feral cat population at Abilene Christian University is of primary concern to the community in terms of a wildlife management perspective. Due to the Trap-Neuter-Return program (TNR), initiated to maintain the cat colony, reduced genetic variability is highly probable. As a result, the suspected narrowed gene pool could create immunocompromised animals susceptible to certain diseases affecting the population. Some of these diseases could also have zoonotic implications for society. The effectiveness of TNR was assessed by comparing the DNA sequence obtained from the mitochondrial DNA control region between 17 cats of the feral population and 20 independently collected cats …

An Analysis Of Operant Conditioning And Its Relationship With Video Game Addiction, Daniel Vu
An Analysis Of Operant Conditioning And Its Relationship With Video Game Addiction, Daniel Vu
ART 108: Introduction to Games Studies
A report published by the Entertainment Software Association revealed that in 2015, 155 million Americans play video games with an average of two gamers in each game-playing household (Entertainment Software Association, “Essential Facts about the Computer and Video Game Industry”). With this massive popularity that has sprung alongside video games, the question must be asked: how are video games affecting today's people? With the current way some video games are structured, the video game rewards players for achieving certain accomplishments. For example, competitive video games reward players who achieve victories by giving them a higher ranking or other games display …

Migrating Learning Management Systems: A Case Of A Large Public University, Brenda L. R. Such, Albert D. Ritzhaupt, George S. Thompson
Administrative Issues Journal
In the past 20 years, institutions of higher education have made major investments in Learning Management Systems (LMSs). As institutions have integrated the LMS into campus culture, the potential of migrating to not only an upgraded version of the LMS, but also an entirely different LMS, has become a reality. This qualitative research study examines the perspectives of five stakeholders involved with the migration of an LMS at a major research institution in the southeastern United States. Using Lewin’s (1947) Change Management Model and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Model as analogies, this research seeks to understand the role and responsibilities …

Cluster Approach: Gaps And Shortcomings In Un Coordination Of Humanitarian Actors In Post-Earthquake Haiti And Implications For Policy Concerns Of The New Humanitarian School Of Thought, Naomi Vinbury
Sustainability and Social Justice
This research analyzes the role of the UN OCHA Cluster Approach in the context of Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. Gaps and shortcomings of the current humanitarian model are identified and the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach is considered as a model to be used as an instrument to inform the New Humanitarian school of thought. A recent history of Haiti and the political relationship to the international community will be reviewed as context that outlines the vulnerabilities that created a risk society leading up to the disaster. A brief history of the recent trajectory of humanitarian aid will be reviewed and …
Contentions At The Human-Wildlife Interface: An Analysis Of Chicago’S Coyote Management Plan, Ilanah Taves
Contentions At The Human-Wildlife Interface: An Analysis Of Chicago’S Coyote Management Plan, Ilanah Taves
Sustainability and Social Justice
Urbanization and habitat fragmentation cause animal species to either adjust to human- dominated landscapes or suffer population loss. This paper examines the municipal challenges associated with coyotes, an animal successfully adapting to cities throughout North America. The presence of predators in highly developed areas challenges conceptual and spatial attempts to separate cities from nature. This report’s introductory sections critically examine the alienation of wildlife from the urban form. Theoretical perspectives from the discipline of animal geographies are employed to deconstruct problematic relationships between cities and animals, and reimagine a metropolis that considers the presence of nonhuman others. Engaging Jennifer Wolch’s …
Running From The Gender Police: Reconceptualizing Gender To Ensure Protection For Non-Binary People, Katie Reineck
Running From The Gender Police: Reconceptualizing Gender To Ensure Protection For Non-Binary People, Katie Reineck
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
Non-binary people who are discriminated against at work or school are in a unique and demoralizing position. Not only have some courts expressed reluctance to use existing antidiscrimination law to protect plaintiffs who are discriminated against based on their gender identity and not simply because they are men or women, in most states non-binary genders are not legally recognized. I argue that a fundamental right to self-identification grounded in the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment would provide non-binary plaintiffs with the ability to assert their gender in court and have that assertion carry legal weight, regardless of how …

Summer Habitat Selection Of The Lower Colorado River Valley Population Of Greater Sandhill Cranes, Kammie L. Kruse, Daniel P. Collins, Courtenay M. Conring, Blake A. Grisham, Warren C. Conway, Jeffrey M. Knetter
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Identifying habitat selection and use is important to understand in wildlife management because it informs habitat manipulations, conservation efforts, and species distribution. Habitat selection by sandhill cranes (Antigone canadensis) has been studied primarily on overwintering areas and a few summering locations. Summer habitat selection by the Lower Colorado River Valley Population of greater sandhill cranes (A. c. tabida) in the Intermountain West is not widely known, but has been identified as an information need by many wildlife management agencies. We captured and attached satellite platform transmitter terminals to 21 adult sandhill cranes on Cibola and Sonny Bono Salton Sea National …

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Many aspects of human behavior seem to be well-described by formulas of quantum physics. In this paper, we explain this phenomenon by showing that the corresponding quantum-looking formulas can be derived from the general ideas of scale invariance, fuzziness, and copulas. We also use these ideas to derive a general family of formulas that include non-quantum and quantum probabilities as particular cases -- formulas that may be more adequate for describing human behavior than purely non-quantum or purely quantum ones.
Why Triangular Membership Functions Are Often Efficient In F-Transform Applications: Relation To Interval Uncertainty\\ And Haar Wavelets, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Why Triangular Membership Functions Are Often Efficient In F-Transform Applications: Relation To Interval Uncertainty\\ And Haar Wavelets, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Fuzzy techniques describe expert opinions. At first glance, we would therefore expect that the more accurately the corresponding membership functions describe the expert's opinions, the better the corresponding results. In practice, however, contrary to these expectations, the simplest -- and not very accurate -- triangular membership functions often work the best. In this paper, on the example of the use of membership functions in F-transform techniques, we provide a possible theoretical explanation for this surprising empirical phenomenon.

How To Store Tensors In Computer Memory: An Observation, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In this paper, after explaining the need to use tensors in computing, we analyze the question of how to best store tensors in computer memory. Somewhat surprisingly, with respect to a natural optimality criterion, the standard way of storing tensors turns out to be one of the optimal ones.

Beyond Integration: A Symmetry-Based Approach To Reaching Stationarity In Economic Time Series, Songsak Sriboonchitta, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Many efficient data processing techniques assume that the corresponding process is stationary. However, in areas like economics, most processes are not stationery: with the exception of stagnation periods, economies usually grow. A known way to apply stationarity-based methods to such processes -- integration -- is based on the fact that often, while the process itself is not stationary, its first or second differences are stationary. This idea works when the trend polynomially depends on time. In practice, the trend is usually non-polynomial: it is often exponentially growing, with cycles added. In this paper, we shod how integration techniques can be …

Why Sparse?, Thongchai Dumrongpokaphan, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Aleksandra Belina
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many situations, a solution to a practical problem is sparse, i.e., corresponds to the case when most of the parameters describing the solution are zeros, and only a few attain non-zero values. This surprising empirical phenomenon helps solve the corresponding problems -- but it remains unclear why this phenomenon happens. In this paper, we provide a possible theoretical explanation for this mysterious phenomenon.

Media, Family, And Friends: Normative Environment And Global Citizenship Identification, Stephen Reysen Ph.D., Iva Katzarska-Miller Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
Prior research has shown that Bulgarian participants report greater global normative environment and identification with global citizens than U.S. participants; it has also shown that the relationship between country sample (U.S. vs. Bulgaria) and global citizenship identification is mediated by the perception that one’s normative environment promotes a global citizen identity. In Study 1 of the present research, we examined the number of global (vs. domestic stories) in U.S. and Bulgarian print media to find a greater number of global stories in Bulgarian media. In Study 2, Bulgarians’ frequency of media consumption was associated with self-reported global citizenship identification, and …

Corncobs In The Campfire: Evidence Of Cultivation Of Zea Mays At 44ch62, The Randy K Wade Site, Olivia A. Mehalko, Cameron E. Reuss
Undergraduate Publications
In 20 years of excavation, the Randy K. Wade site (44CH62) has only produced indirect evidence of the cultivation of corn (Zea mays) in the Late Woodland village. This indirect evidence consists primarily of corncob impressions on Dan River pottery. In the summer of 2017, an intact hearth was excavated which contained the preserved remains of multiple charred corncobs- the first direct evidence of corn. The hearth also contained remains of other organic materials such as charred corn kernels, bark, sticks, bone fragments, and acorns. This paper will examine the direct evidence for corn cultivation at the Wade site and …
