Social and Environmental Justice Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study is to develop a climate change (CC) prepared inter-community service sharing strategy (ICSS) targeted to rural Ontario communities that capitalizes on infrastructure assessments that are undertaken through the asset management process (AMP). AMP is defined by the Ontario government as “…. the process of making the best possible decisions regarding the building, operating, maintaining, renewing, replacing and disposing of infrastructure assets. It helps prioritize infrastructure needs and ensures that investments are made in the right place and at the right time to minimize future repair and rehabilitation costs.” The objective of AMPs are to maximize …

Quasi-Geostrophic, Two-Layer Model, Mykhailo Rudko Dec 2017

Quasi-Geostrophic, Two-Layer Model, Mykhailo Rudko

Supplementary Data and Tools

This is a finite-difference, two-layer, quasi-geosotrophic model. The governing equations are the conservation of potential vorticity in each layer with added viscous terms and forcing (Pedlosky, 1987). This model simulates the dynamics of mesoscale currents. The nonlinear term is discretized with Arakawa energy, enstrophy and symmetry conserving scheme. Doubly-periodic boundary conditions are applied. To compile, please, type "make all".

Individualized Glycemic Targets For The Elderly Residing In Long Term Care Facilities, Abegail Hubberd Dec 2017

Individualized Glycemic Targets For The Elderly Residing In Long Term Care Facilities, Abegail Hubberd

Doctor of Nursing Practice

Of people age 65 and older residing in a long-term care facility, 1 in 4 has Type 2 diabetes (Smide & Nygren, 2013). Care and management of this population is a challenge for nurses and other providers. Results of a needs assessment in a local long-term care facility identified deficiencies in the provision of evidence-based Type 2 diabetes care for this target population. American Diabetes Association Guidelines (2017) recommend application of individualized HbA1c targets for the elderly residing in long-term care facilities, especially for those with compromises in clinical and functional status. This two prong quality improvement project strove to …

The Cost Of Experiencing Everyday Legal Problems Related To Loss Of Employment And Loss Of Housing, Lisa Moore, Ab Currie, Nicole Aylwin, Trevor C. W. Farrow

Canadian Forum on Civil Justice

In 2014, the Canadian Forum on Civil Justice (CFCJ) conducted a national survey to determine the costs, extent and consequences of serious civil and family justice problems experienced by the Canadian public. Findings from the CFCJ’s national “Everyday Legal Problems and the Cost of Justice in Canada” survey (Cost of Justice survey) confirm that civil and family legal problems result in significant monetary costs to the individuals who experience them as well as to the publicly funded services that individuals access for support when dealing with legal problems. With Canadians spending almost as much to resolve their legal problems as …

Prismatic Blade Production In The Lower Cacaulapa Valley, Honduras: Implications For A Late Classic Political Economy, William J. Mcfarlane, Edward M. Schortman Dec 2017

Prismatic Blade Production In The Lower Cacaulapa Valley, Honduras: Implications For A Late Classic Political Economy, William J. Mcfarlane, Edward M. Schortman

Anthropology Papers and Presentations

Investigations of ancient political economies frequently focus on craft production. How manufacturing is organized can provide critical insights on more than the economy because social interactions and political processes are also involved. Here we consider how the acquisition, fabrication, and distribution of obsidian blades figured in the political strategies of craftworkers and elites within the Late Classic (AD 600–800) lower Cacaulapa Valley, northwestern Honduras. This evidence provides insights into the organization of craft manufacture across southeastern Mesoamerica and suggests that current models do not capture the varied production strategies that may be pursued within the same polity.

Achieving Totally Local Anticoagulation On Blood Contacting Devices, Rana Gbyli, Anna Mercaldi, Harihara Sundaram, Kagya Amoako

Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

The recent years have witnessed an increased activity in biocompatibility research aimed at limiting biomaterial-induced blood coagulation. From 2008 to 2016, a total of $36,946,764.00 USD was awarded in grants to 213 research proposals and as large as 50.4% ($18,627,854.00) of that award monies were distributed to 101 proposals over the fiscal years of FY14 to FY16 alone. However, the complexity in blood responses to biomaterials, variability in blood function between individuals and animal species, and differences in medical device application and test setting all continue to pose difficulties in making a breakthrough in this field. This review focuses on …

Update: International Human Rights, James Hart Mr.

Law Librarian Articles and Other Publications

This guide explains the procedures of the major international human rights systems because it is procedures that create the need to record or communicate. In other words, documents emanate from critical junctures in a process. The guide does not cover the content of the human rights themselves. Nor does it explicate the websites that hold the documents, but it will give you the information you will need to understand them. The guide will, however, give you URLs. With the information in the guide, you will be able to navigate your way through the websites without detailed directions. The first part …
