Towards Simulating The Human Brain, Logan T. Collins
Towards Simulating The Human Brain, Logan T. Collins
Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Science
The human brain has been described as “the most complex object in the universe.” Its meshwork of 86 billion neurons,84 billion glial cells, and over 150 trillion synapses may seem intractable. Nonetheless, efforts to comprehensively map, understand, and even computationally reproduce this structure are underway. Large collectives of researchers have come together, working in concert towards these goals. The Human Brain Project (HBP) and its precursor, the Blue Brain Project, have spearheaded the brain simulation goal. Some other notable organizations include the China Brain Project, the BRAIN Initiative. On a scale which parallels the space program and the Human Genome Project, …

Faculty Spotlight: Gordon Gribble, Samuel R. Reed
Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Science
Professor Gordon Gribble received his B.S. from U.C. Berkeley and his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon. He has been at Dartmouth for the past 49 years, and in that time he has taught chemistry to a great number of students. His research in the field of organic chemistry features indole and triterpenoid synthesis, and has yielded a wide range of medications.
Effects Of Adenovirus Infection On The Localization Of Cellular Protein Pat1b, Emilee Friedman, Kasey A. Karen
Effects Of Adenovirus Infection On The Localization Of Cellular Protein Pat1b, Emilee Friedman, Kasey A. Karen
Georgia Journal of Science
Adenoviruses are a diverse family of nonenveloped, double-stranded DNA viruses with a variety of vertebrate hosts including humans. Over 50 serotypes of human adenovirus have been identified, and cause a number of illnesses, including conjunctivitis, gastroenteritis, and respiratory infections. The life cycle of adenovirus is divided into immediate early, early, and late phases, with immediate early proteins controlling transcription and the cell cycle, early proteins being largely regulatory, and late proteins being structural. Early proteins such as E4 11k have been demonstrated to relocalize key cellular proteins, including proteins found within mRNA processing bodies (p-bodies). It is hypothesized that E4 …

The Toxicity Of Nanoparticles Depends On Multiple Molecular And Physicochemical Mechanisms, Yue-Wern Huang, Melissa Cambre, Han-Jung Lee
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Nanotechnology is an emerging discipline that studies matters at the nanoscale level. Eventually, the goal is to manipulate matters at the atomic level to serve mankind. One growing area in nanotechnology is biomedical applications, which involve disease management and the discovery of basic biological principles. In this review, we discuss characteristics of nanomaterials, with an emphasis on transition metal oxide nanoparticles that influence cytotoxicity. Identification of those properties may lead to the design of more efficient and safer nanosized products for various industrial purposes and provide guidance for assessment of human and environmental health risk. We then investigate biochemical and …

Book Review: Charles E. Mcclelland. Berlin, The Mother Of All Research Universities, 1860–1918., David Cahan
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Charles McClelland has long been one of the leading scholars of German universities and professionalism in Germany. His State, Society, and University in Germany, 1700–1914 (Cambridge, 1980), for example, is a fundamental introductory work for anyone wishing to understand the structure, growth, and development of the German universities during this period.
To help celebrate its bicentennial (2010), the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (to use the University of Berlin’s official name since 1949) commissioned a six-volume history, of which McClelland was the co-author of Volume 1, running from 1810 to 1918 and published in German. The work under review is an augmented, …

A Comparative Analysis Of Three Major Transfer Airports In Northeast Asia Focusing On Incheon International Airport Using A Conjoint Analysis, Tae Won Chung, Yong Joo Lee, Hyun Mi Jang
A Comparative Analysis Of Three Major Transfer Airports In Northeast Asia Focusing On Incheon International Airport Using A Conjoint Analysis, Tae Won Chung, Yong Joo Lee, Hyun Mi Jang
Finance and Supply Chain Faculty Scholarship
Due mainly to the privatization and commercialization of airline companies and deregulation of the aviation rules, the demand for air transport has continuously been increasing. Airport authorities state that transfer passengers, who contribute to the large portion of the airports’ profits, are gaining much more importance, particularly in the Northeast Asia region where the air transport industry is very vital. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the competitiveness of IIA (Incheon International Airport) with other major airports located in Northeast Asia in passenger transfers made between Southeast Asia and China to North America using Conjoint Analysis. Results have indicated that …
