Going Beyond The Textbook: Revitalizing Culture In The Spanish Classroom, Sarah Basar Dec 2017

Going Beyond The Textbook: Revitalizing Culture In The Spanish Classroom, Sarah Basar

Honors Theses

Effectively teaching the culture of a target language in foreign language classrooms can be a rather difficult and time-consuming task. Most often, culture is placed somewhere on a spectrum of either being a minor supplement to acquiring and learning the target language or utilizing culture as the direction through which grammar, vocabulary, and conversational practice are attained. Teachers’ beliefs, experiences, and resources all play a significant role in how culture is defined and taught in the schools of a country where globalization and immigration are quickly beginning to change the sociopolitical and demographic dynamics of our society. Thus, it is …

Setting Priorities For Knowledge Translation Of Cochrane Reviews For Health Equity: Evidence For Equity, Peter Tugwell, Jennifer Petkovic, Vivian Welch, Jennifer Vincent, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta, Rachel Churchill, Don Desavigny, Lawrence Mbuagbaw, Tomas Pantoja

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Background: A focus on equity in health can be seen in many global development goals and reports, research and international declarations. With the development of a relevant framework and methods, the Campbell and Cochrane Equity Methods Group has encouraged the application of an 'equity lens' to systematic reviews, and many organizations publish reviews intended to address health equity. The purpose of the Evidence for Equity (E4E) project was to conduct a priority-setting exercise and apply an equity lens by developing a knowledge translation product comprising summaries of systematic reviews from the Cochrane Library. E4E translates evidence from systematic reviews into …

Using Science To Build Better Learners: One School’S Successful Efforts To Raise Its Bar Passage Rates In An Era Of Decline, Louis Schulze Dec 2017

Using Science To Build Better Learners: One School’S Successful Efforts To Raise Its Bar Passage Rates In An Era Of Decline, Louis Schulze

Distinguished Speaker Series

What measures can law schools take to improve student performance and bar passage? The answer is not what you think. Recent developments in the science of learning show that most law students learn wrong. In fact, ineffective methods of learning pervade all levels of education. We now know that widely accepted learning and study strategies that were once considered gospel are actually deeply flawed. Yet we still embrace and propagate those myths.

Meanwhile, bar passage rates and law student performance are plummeting. Everyone in legal education is asking, “What can we do?” But, “What can we do?” is the wrong …

Robocall And Fake Caller-Id Detection, Junda Liu, Naveen Kalla, Shi Lu Dec 2017

Robocall And Fake Caller-Id Detection, Junda Liu, Naveen Kalla, Shi Lu

Defensive Publications Series

Spam phone calls are a source of user unhappiness, and a tool for unscrupulous operators to prey on vulnerable individuals. Spam callers use increasingly sophisticated methods, e.g., disguising a call with a fake caller-id, such that a receiver of the call is given an impression that someone from their contact list is calling. Robocalls, wherein an automated program originates phone calls that targets individuals, e.g., for unsolicited sales or other purposes are a source of annoyance for phone users. One approach to eliminate such calls is to require authentication by a call originating party. However, spam or robocallers are unlikely …

Intelligent Responsive Image Cropping, Tomothy Brooks Dec 2017

Intelligent Responsive Image Cropping, Tomothy Brooks

Defensive Publications Series

Images and the screens on which they are to be displayed can vary widely in size and aspect ratio. A common challenge is the optimal use of a display screen without cropping out important features in the image. This disclosure describes techniques for intelligent image cropping and introduces the concept of maximum crop bounds that represent the maximum percentage by which an image can be cropped from an edge without cropping out important content. Prior to display, an image is cropped such that the aspect ratio of the cropped image is close to that of the screen, with a constraint …

Quantifying Speech Intelligibility Based On Crowdsourcing, Edrei Chua, Jason Fedor, Caile Collins, Aaron Malenfant Dec 2017

Quantifying Speech Intelligibility Based On Crowdsourcing, Edrei Chua, Jason Fedor, Caile Collins, Aaron Malenfant

Defensive Publications Series

The intelligibility of speech within media content, e.g., audio or video streams, is an important factor that determines the reach and popularity of the media. Objective measures of audio and speech quality, e.g., PESQ and SII scores, correlate poorly with human assessment. MOS, a widely accepted intelligibility test, is subjective, expensive, and time consuming.

Techniques disclosed herein provide an objective measure of the intelligibility of speech within video or audio content. Speech intelligibility scores are calculated based on the edit distance between human speech transcriptions of short clips and transcripts produced by an automatic speech recognizer. The speech intelligibility score …

Upon receiving a user …

Shape Modeling And Boulder Mapping Of Asteroid 1992 Uy4, Nicholas Duong Dec 2017

Shape Modeling And Boulder Mapping Of Asteroid 1992 Uy4, Nicholas Duong

Posters-at-the-Capitol

The structure and history of near-Earth asteroids are important to
study because they collide with Earth, sometimes with significant consequences for
climate and the survival of many species, including our own. If NASA is ever to deflect an asteroid on a collision course, it is crucial to know as much as possible about its size, composition, structure and boulder distribution. The boulder
distribution in turn helps to map the asteroid's gravitational field.

1992 UY4 is a near-Earth asteroid discovered in 1992. In August 2005, UY4 made a
``close" (for space) pass of Earth, about 15x farther than the Moon. It …

Manufacturer Origin Attestation For Device User Authorization, Breno De Medeiros, Michael Dietz, Mengcheng Duan, Arnar Birgisson Dec 2017

Manufacturer Origin Attestation For Device User Authorization, Breno De Medeiros, Michael Dietz, Mengcheng Duan, Arnar Birgisson

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes techniques for user authentication and authorization for devices with support for manufacturer origin attestation. A client attestation certificate allows an authorization service to associate a device with its manufacturer (client). A unique client identifier is assigned by the authorization service to the client. The client assigns a unique instance certificate to each device. During initial authorization, each device uses a trusted local channel to establish identification before the authorization service and obtain an authorization code. The authorization code, the device instance attestation certificate chain, and a proof of possession of the instance key, in the form of …

Automated Fiber Network Monitoring, Bravishma Narayan Dec 2017

Automated Fiber Network Monitoring, Bravishma Narayan

Defensive Publications Series

Telecommunication infrastructure providers, e.g., fiber network providers, benefit from accurate knowledge of the network footprint. This disclosure describes techniques to automatically monitor fiber networks. Datasets of fiber network information are hosted on suitable platforms, and can be easily customized. Network footprint, including information about the handholes and their adjacent handholes, provided by the network planner is captured as a dataset. Network splicing data points are identified and stored per customer along with their duct/microduct and ring information as a dataset. A breadth first search technique is used to analyze the datasets and provide information about usage of pairs and cores. …

Cognitive Dissonance At Dartmouth College: Measuring Student’S Openness To Politically Incongruent Ideas, Jase A. Davis, Kristen Hinckley Dec 2017

Cognitive Dissonance At Dartmouth College: Measuring Student’S Openness To Politically Incongruent Ideas, Jase A. Davis, Kristen Hinckley

Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Science

Do the psychological theories of cognitive dissonance and selective exposure have bearing on how students at Dartmouth engage with news? Are students less likely to consume politically charged materials that they disagree with? Results from a true randomized survey administered to all undergraduates at the College in the classes of 2017 and 2018 found that Democrats at Dartmouth are less likely to engage with news that contradicts their political beliefs at a statistically significant level. Republicans, however, were more likely to engage with politically disagreeable news, but not at a statistically significant level.

Going For The Trunk, Nicholas G. Norwitz Dec 2017

Going For The Trunk, Nicholas G. Norwitz

Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Science

Although angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation) is an absolute requirement for tumor growth, therapies designed to treat cancer by targeting specific angiogenic factors have had limited success. One theory is that there are many different angiogenic factors that can compensate for the loss of a single factor. Therefore, a more effective strategy may be to move upstream, identify a factor that regulates the expression of many different downstream angiogenic mediators, and then measure the effect of blocking this single common factor on angiogenesis-mediated tumor growth.

Uncertain Influences: Genetics, Pathology, And Alzheimer’S Disease, Sumita M. Strander Dec 2017

Uncertain Influences: Genetics, Pathology, And Alzheimer’S Disease, Sumita M. Strander

Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Science

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that primarily affects individuals above the age of 65 and is often associated with memory loss, one of its chief symptoms. Although it was first discovered by Alois Alzheimer in 1906, AD has only recently garnered attention proportionate to the impact it is expected to have as the world’s population ages at increasing rates. Despite the certainty of this its importance, there is much the medical and scientific communities do not know about the etiology of this disease. This paper will discuss a few of the reasons for this lack of knowledge …

Lyme Disease: An Influential Outdoor Hazard, Kevin Kang Dec 2017

Lyme Disease: An Influential Outdoor Hazard, Kevin Kang

Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Science

Lyme disease is an important, common illness in New England. A relatively new illness, it was discovered about forty years ago in the town of Lyme, Connecticut. Now, it has become the most common vector-transmitted illness in the United States, with over 30,000 cases annually. Lyme disease arises when a bacterium is transmitted to a human via deer tick bite, so those of us involved in outdoor sports are most likely to contract the disease. Inhabitants of New England and the northeastern U.S. are most vulnerable to the disease, as 95% of Lyme Disease cases occur in only 14 out …
