Behavior Skills Training To Build Professional Capacity, Janet I. Goodman, Yayoi Kitta, Kimberly Waldrop Dec 2017

Behavior Skills Training To Build Professional Capacity, Janet I. Goodman, Yayoi Kitta, Kimberly Waldrop

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Ongoing professional learning is one of the critical elements to promote professional capacity. Administrators and intervention staff need a way to systematically and efficiently build capacity across all school staff as educators are trained in PBIS for all students and individualized behavioral strategies for students. Behavior Skills Training (BST) (Breidenbach, 1984) is an evidence-based training approach that is effective and efficient, and more importantly, that is generally accepted by trainees because of high engagement and follow up coaching. This systematic procedure provides participants the opportunity to engage in instruction, watch the trainer model a skill, practice and increase their own …

Creating An Inclusive Climate For Students With Developmental Disabilities (As/Asd), Stephanie C. Holmes Dec 2017

Creating An Inclusive Climate For Students With Developmental Disabilities (As/Asd), Stephanie C. Holmes

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

What is inclusion? Is it academic? Is it social? It is both! Students with developmental delays such autism spectrum are lacking true social inclusion in elementary schools. How do we get there? Who needs training? Teachers? Administrators? Peers? Parents? Creating a positive socially inclusive climate for students on the spectrum is a collaborative effort. Elementary school years are the foundation for students forming their image of self as a student and a friend. It is crucial to help these students achieve a sense of community and belonging beyond the mainstream academic classroom to a true social inclusion of the school …

Supporting Mechanistic Reasoning In Domain-Specific Contexts, Paul J. Weinberg Dec 2017

Supporting Mechanistic Reasoning In Domain-Specific Contexts, Paul J. Weinberg

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Mechanistic reasoning is an epistemic practice central within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines. Although there has been some work on mechanistic reasoning in the research literature and standards documents, much of this work targets domain-general characterizations of mechanistic reasoning; this study provides domain-specific illustrations of mechanistic reasoning. The data in this study comes from the Assessment of Mechanistic Reasoning Project (AMRP) (Weinberg, 2012), designed using item response theory modeling to diagnose individuals’ mechanistic reasoning about systems of levers. Such a characterization of mechanistic reasoning illuminates what is easy and difficult about this form of reasoning, within the subdomain of …

Secure Web Proxy Resistant To Probing Attacks, Benjamin Schwartz Dec 2017

Secure Web Proxy Resistant To Probing Attacks, Benjamin Schwartz

Defensive Publications Series

Secure web proxies are popular for sending internet traffic via alternative paths. Access to a secure web proxy is typically password protected. A malicious third party that does not know a username or password can detect a secure web proxy server by attempting a connection and observing a distinctive response from the proxy server, e.g., an HTTP 407 Proxy Authentication Required response. Traffic from clients that utilize web proxy servers that are detected in this manner can then be blacklisted.

The techniques of this disclosure enable secure web proxies that are resistant to probing attacks. The output of distinctive signals …

Deterministic Patch File Generation For Deflate Streams, Amin Hassani, Ryan Hitchman, Sen Jiang Dec 2017

Deterministic Patch File Generation For Deflate Streams, Amin Hassani, Ryan Hitchman, Sen Jiang

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes efficient techniques to generate small and deterministic patch files for Deflate compressed files. A transform is utilized to perform decompression of the Huffman part of the Deflate stream of the file while the structure of the LZ77 coding in the file is left unchanged. A corresponding reverse transform is utilized to deterministically obtain the original Deflate stream from the generated stream. Implementation of the techniques requires low amounts of memory and computation time. The techniques are compatible with many compression techniques. The techniques can be used to deliver software updates over a network.

Time-Delayed Casual Telepresence Interaction, Curtis Galloway, David Karam

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes techniques to use a system of audiovisual equipment to aid in facilitating casual interactions between workers of different offices and time zones through time-shifted playback of brief video clips of actions by workers from common spaces of one office on a screen at another office. Live actions to share in video clips are determined based on whether a user interacts with the camera. The video clips are played back in other locations at a different time in the day based on time zone differences between locations.

The purpose of this research was to determine which, if any, promotions offered by the Red Wings had a stronger impact on motivating fans to attend games. The research question for the study focused on determining what relationship exists between promotional activities and attendance at Rochester Red Wings games. The most important conclusions drawn from these studies were that promotions held on weekday games were more significant in raising attendance numbers, post-game fireworks …

"Rabbit Hash, We're Gonna Get Some Trash", Joe Chandler Dec 2017

"Rabbit Hash, We're Gonna Get Some Trash", Joe Chandler

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton

We’re here… I think… We sit in the car wondering if we have in fact made it. We’re on what is basically a one lane road in between houses and the Ohio River, with no streetlights, and cars parked on either side of the road in Rabbit Hash, Kentucky. Very confused on if we were where we were supposed to be; to meet the rest of our group and to meet our hosts for the night, we walk down the dark one lane road. At the end we see a group of people who look like they might be our …

So What?: Writing And Tutoring Intentionally, Cassidy Gummersall Dec 2017

So What?: Writing And Tutoring Intentionally, Cassidy Gummersall

Tutor's Column

In my first semester of tutoring, I have seen papers about forestry services, Rihanna as an emblem of dominance, the nutritional chemistry of an English muffin, NASA funding, and the endangered Peruvian vicugna. I have worked with students writing genres like persuasive research essays, personal narratives, lab reports, and even philosophy short-answer midterm responses. When confronted with papers that have requirements or subjects where I am far from an expert, I have learned to ask, “Why did you select this topic?” and “How would you want your audience to be changed by reading your paper?” These questions function to alleviate …

Type 1 Diabetes Alters Lipid Handling And Metabolism In Human Fibroblasts And Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells, Albert R. Jones Iv, Emily L. Coleman, Nicholas R. Husni, Jude T. Deeney, Forum Raval, Devin Steenkamp, Hans Dooms, Barbara S. Nikolajczyk, Barbara E. Corkey

Clinical and Translational Science Faculty Publications

Triggers of the autoimmune response that leads to type 1 diabetes (T1D) remain poorly understood. A possibility is that parallel changes in both T cells and target cells provoke autoimmune attack. We previously documented greater Ca2+ transients in fibroblasts from T1D subjects than non-T1D after exposure to fatty acids (FA) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα). These data indicate that metabolic and signal transduction defects present in T1D can be elicited ex vivo in isolated cells. Changes that precede T1D, including inflammation, may activate atypical responses in people that are genetically predisposed to T1D. To identify such cellular differences …
