Background: The Million Hearts® initiative aims to prevent heart disease and stroke in the United States by mobilizing public and private sectors around a core set of objectives, with particular attention on improving blood pressure control. South Asians in particular have disproportionately high rates of hypertension and face numerous cultural, linguistic, and social barriers to accessing healthcare. Interventions utilizing Health information technology (HIT) and community health worker (CHW)-led patient coaching have each been demonstrated to be effective at advancing Million Hearts® goals, yet few studies have investigated the potential impact of integrating these strategies into a clinical-community linkage initiative. Mid Degree Review
. I’ve always been driven by good stories with the hope to create my own someday. Whether it be from a movie, book, or video game, if it has the ability to captivate me, and my creativity, I’ll try to incorporate it in my work. My main focus is Illustration, mostly in either an ink or graphite medium, with the aim to create a narrative image with some semblance of storytelling. I have more than a soft spot for the realm of science fiction. Practically everything from the entire genre has inspired me one …

Measuring Polarized Emission In Clusters In The Cmb S4 Era, Louis Thibaut, Emory F. Bunn, Benjamin Wandelt, Joseph Silk

The next generation of CMB experiments (CMB Stage-4) will produce a Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) cluster catalog containing ∼105 objects, two orders of magnitudes more than currently available. In this paper, we discuss the detectability of the polarized signal generated by scattering of the CMB quadrupole on the cluster electron gas using this catalog. We discuss the possibility of using this signal to measure the relationship between cluster optical depth and mass. We find that the area of observation of S4 maximizes the signal-to-noise (S/N) on the polarized signal but that this S/N is extremely small for an individual cluster, of order …

Piracy, Policy, And Pandora: Outdated Copyright In A Digital World, Stephanie Caress
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
This project examines how current copyright laws and digital distribution practices in music can be improved for both the creator and the consumer. The laws that govern our digital atmosphere, and thus a large portion of music distribution, are outdated and cause a wide variety of problems for both artists and fans. To create a comprehensive picture and establish the scope of this problem, I start by outlining the process a song goes through from when it is written to when it is in the hands, or rather ears, of listeners. From there, copyright laws are entwined with this process. …

RNA interference (RNAi) based methods are being developed for pest management. A few products for control of coleopteran pests are expected to be commercialized soon. However, variability in RNAi efficiency among insects is preventing the widespread use of this technology. In this study, we conducted research to identify reasons for variability in RNAi efficiency among thirty-seven (37) insects belonging to five orders. Studies on double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) degradation by dsRNases and processing of labeled dsRNA to siRNA showed that both dsRNA degradation and processing are variable among insects belonging to different orders as well as among different insect species within …
The Timecourse Of Phonological Competition In Spoken Word Recognition: A Comparison Of Adults And Very Young Children, Elizabeth Schoen Simmons
The Timecourse Of Phonological Competition In Spoken Word Recognition: A Comparison Of Adults And Very Young Children, Elizabeth Schoen Simmons
Master's Theses
Spoken word recognition (SWR) is the mapping of speech sounds to words from many potential candidates in one’s lexicon. In adults, words that are phonetically similar, of high frequency, or semantically related compete for recognition. An ongoing debate in the literature is whether or not very young children encode spoken words with fine-grained temporal and phonetic detail. Specifically, whether they represent words wholistically or as smaller phonetic units similar to that of adults. The adult literature demonstrates that words that are phonetically similar at onset (cohorts) and offset (rhymes) compete for recognition. As it happens, rhymes have the potential to …

So we were teaching this guy Dave, he’s super cool. And every time we would go over there, like, everything just fell into our lap, it was like, we would go over and he would be like ‘guys I’m thinkin’ I wanna know where I go after I die’ and everything was just perfect, but we went over one time and it was pretty late, we usually didn’t go over to his house late. And he was just, he was out of his mind. He wanted to kill himself, it was just a really bad situation and we were trying …

Text: My mom would tell me kind of stories that were also warnings, ya know. Anyway, she said one day that she had heard that people would hide under your car and wait for you, and then when you came out to your car then they’d-I don’t know- slash your ankles or something and get ya [laughs]. So whenever I walked out to the car after work, I’d always crouch down and check if anyone was under my car from far away before I went over there

The spleen is an important site for central regulation of immune function by noradrenergic sympathetic nerves, but little is known about this major region of neuroimmune communication in humans. Experimental studies using animal models have established that sympathetic innervation of the spleen is essential for cholinergic anti-inflammatory responses evoked by vagal nerve stimulation, and clinical studies are evaluating this approach for treating inflammatory diseases. Most data on sympathetic nerves in spleen derive from rodent studies, and this work has established that remodeling of sympathetic innervation can occur during inflammation. However, little is known about the effects of sepsis on spleen …

Boozer Shows How Archaeologists Do Their Work, Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Publications and Research
From the time of the Indiana Jones movies, archaeology as a profession has had a mythical aura, but we recently had the chance to interview an excellent archaeologist who puts a human face on the profession. Her name is Anna Lucille Boozer, and she was raised in Williamsburg, Virginia. She has a bachelor’s in arts, in philosophy, and in the history of math and science from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland, as well as two masters’ degrees in anthropology and a doctorate in that subject from Columbia University. Today she is an associate professor of history in the Weissman …

On October 17, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) introduced to the Senate U.S. Committee of Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs a bill titled “BASIC Research Act.” This apparent innocent title covers the real intention of this legislation – an attempt to defund basic research and make it subject to partisan politics. This legislation would change the way grant proposals are evaluated by all federal agencies, from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). These and other federal agencies are the main funders of scholarly work in higher education …
Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of N, N-Dimethylformamide As A Solvent For Cdte Electrodeposition, Joshua Aaron Vangilder
Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of N, N-Dimethylformamide As A Solvent For Cdte Electrodeposition, Joshua Aaron Vangilder
Student Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this dissertation project was to investigate the viability of N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as a solvent for CdTe electrodeposition. The Taguchi Method was used to design a minimal set of experiments to determine this. The factors chosen were deposition voltage, solution composition, stir rate, and temperature. There were a total of nine experiments and 18 samples produced (2 per experiment). Optical absorbance data was collected for each film to approximate the bandgap of the material. This data was used to determine the optimal set of conditions and the relative significance of each factor to one another. It was …

Health Information Seeking On The Internet: How Graduate And Senior Level College Students Determine Credibility, Khairul Islam
Student Theses and Dissertations
The current study observed that the college students’ health information seeking on the Internet was mainly reactive, upon their experience of health issues. They check the online resources mainly to acquire knowledge about their particular health problems. Sometimes the students also google health information proactively, which denoted their extra consciousness about their health and wellness. The college students apply their subjective health knowledge and the Internet skills to make sure that they have retrieved a reliable information that include matching the retrieved information with health symptoms, browsing lists, crosscheck with multiple sources, reputation, interpersonal reference, perceived health belief, past experiences, …
