The Analysis Of Dietary Fat Intake, Body Mass Index, And The Risk Of Cardiovascular Disease For Individuals Diagnosed With Phenylketonuria, Nadine Mohammad Assaf
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Phenylketonuria is an inborn error of metabolism, in which a restricted protein diet is the primary treatment. High fat diets and obesity are two indicators of increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Therefore, the aim of this study was to use high fat intakes and obesity to investigate whether individuals with PKU were at an increased risk of CVD. Percentages of calories coming from fat (PCF), BMI, body mass index percentages (BMI%), and weight per lengths (WPL) were obtained on participants between the ages of 1-50 years old. In conclusion, this study did not identify a risk for CVD in its …

Neutropenia At The Time Of Subcutaneous Port Insertion May Not Be A Risk Factor For Early Infectious Complications In Pediatric Oncology Patients., Lisa Taylor Vanhouwelingen , Md
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The risk of infection associated with subcutaneous port (SQP) placement in patients with neutropenia remains unclear. We reviewed the rate of early infectious complications (<30 days) following SQP placement in pediatric oncology pateints with /without neutropenia (absolute neutrophil count (ANC) <500/mm3.Baseline characteristics and infectious complications were compared between groups using univariable and multivariable analysis.A total of 614 SQP were placed in 542 patients. Compared to non-neutropenic patients, those with neutropenia were more likely to have leukemia (94% vs 50%), pre-operative fever (22% vs 5%), pre-operative infection (19% vs 9%), and were younger (81 vs 109 months) (p values <0.01).After adjusting for fever and underlying-disease there was a non-significant association between neutropenia and early post operative infection (OR 2.41, 95% CI 0.82-7.18, p=0.116). Only pre-operative fever was a predictor of infection (OR 6.09, 95% CI 2.08-17.81, p=0.564).Neutropenia may not be a predictor of early postoperative infection following SQP placement.
Fiberblender: A Realistic Computer Model Of Nerve Bundles For Simulating And Validating The Acquisition Of Diffusion Tensor Imaging, Teddy Salan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) is a powerful medical imaging technique that provides a unique method to investigate the structure and connectivity of neural pathways. DTI is a special magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) modality that combines the principles of magnetic resonance with molecular diffusion to trace the motion of water molecules. In the central nervous system, where nerve fibers are packed in highly-directional bundles, these molecules diffuse along the orientation of the fibers. Hence, characterizing the motion of water with DTI delivers a non-invasive in vivo technique to capture the connectivity of nerves themselves. Despite its promises and successful clinical applications …

Examining The Managerial Skills/Competencies Needed To Transition From A Traditional Performance Appraisal To A Developmental Performance Appraisal, James S. Aller Iii
Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative methods case study was to examine the differences and difficulties of delivering a performance appraisal that was developmental in nature from that of a traditional appraisal, as well as to identify the skills/competencies required of store managers and developmental activities needed to make a transition from a traditional performance appraisal to a performance appraisal system that was developmental in nature. Such a change should not be taken lightly by organizations, given that the task of delivering an evaluation varies. Four research questions guided the study. First, what are the differences between a performance appraisal that …

Commercial scale production of biofuels from lignocellulosic feed stocks has been hampered by the resistance of plant cell walls to enzymatic conversion, primarily owing to lignin. This study investigated whether DypB, the lignin-degrading peroxidase from Rodococcus jostii, depolymerizes lignin and reduces recalcitrance in transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana benthamiana). The protein was targeted to the cytosol or the ER using ER-targeting and retention signal peptides. For each construct, five independent transgenic lines were characterized phenotypically and genotypically. Our findings reveal that expression of DypB in the cytosol and ER does not affect plant development. ER-targeting increased protein accumulation, and …

Enhancing Federal-Tribal Coordination Of Invasive Species, Blaine Parker, Chuck Bargeron, Sean Southey, Lori Buchanan, Miles Falck, Chris Fisher, Joe Maroney, Mervin Wright, Gintas Zavadkas
National Invasive Species Council
Invasive species are defined by the United States government to mean “with regard to a particular ecosystem, a non-native organism whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm, or harm to human, animal, or plant health” (Executive Order [EO] 13751). The ecosystems to which invasive species are introduced or spread are not delimited by jurisdictional boundaries; they intersect with lands managed by federal, tribal, state, territorial, and county governments, as well as properties under private ownership. For this reason, effective coordination and cooperation across jurisdictions is of paramount importance in the prevention, eradication, and control of …

I want to make mundane, inconsequential things special through painting. Often, trivial things do not inspire people. However, I think this can change. The trivial parts of our daily experiences affect us unknowingly. If everything in the world were perfectly orderly and nonspecific, we would have had a boring and monotonous life. The specificity of the trivial parts provides us with fun, surprise, wonder, and curiosity. For example, tooth marks on top of a pencil, the top corner of the book is folded, or nails with a manicure peeled off can cause minor empathy …
Security And The Need For Hydro-Independence In The Middle East, Carolena S. Larson
Security And The Need For Hydro-Independence In The Middle East, Carolena S. Larson
Honors Capstones
This paper brings together the fields of hydrology, politics, and national security to stress the importance of potable water. The hypothesis is: the more decentralized the process of obtaining drinkable water is, the more resistant those processes are to negative forces like changes in the water cycle, short-sighted interests of governments, and the threats of state and non-state actors. This study recommends the utilization of renewable resources such as biochar to reprocess waste-water, and fog nets to capture water for use. The countries of Egypt, Iraq and Syria, and Yemen are used as examples for water issues faced throughout the …

Improving The Accuracy Of Cosmic-Ray Neutron Probe Estimate Of Soil Water Content Using Multiple Detectors And Remote Sensing Estimates Of Vegetation, Xiaochen Dong
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The recently developed Cosmic-ray Neutron Probe (CRNP) for estimating soil water content (SWC) fills a critical measurement gap between point scale methods and large scale measurements collected from remote sensing. CRNP works by measuring the change in low-energy neutron intensity over time. However, the accuracy of CRNP to measure SWC is well known to be affected by other hydrogen sources (e.g. soil organic content, atmospheric water vapor, vegetation and surface water). This study focuses on the influence of rapidly growing vegetation in agricultural fields on the accuracy of the CRNP method. Here we use data from three long-term CRNP study …

Development And Testing Of An Agricultural Nozzle Clog Detection Device Prototype, Chin Nee Vong
Student Theses and Dissertations
Nozzle clogging during spray application results in poor weed management and increased cost in re-spraying. A device that can detect nozzle clogging during the spraying operation is necessary. A novel method and device for detecting clogged nozzles that is externally attachable to each nozzle on the sprayer’s boom has been developed in the Precision Application Technology Lab at Arkansas State University. The study’s objectives include developing prototypes of this device and comparing the spray droplet size and spray pattern in controlled condition and spray coverage in field condition with and without using the device. The research demonstrated that this new …
