One of the most memorable and impactful experiences I’ve had this semester with the River Stewards Program was our field trip to the Montgomery Country Environmental Learning Center. The sophomore cohort went on this field trip on our own, and it sticks out in my memory for many different reasons. One reason being what we saw and learned at the center.

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton
As a child, no one was able to ever persuade me to come inside. Every day after school, you could always find me in the wooded area behind my house, running in between and climbing on the trees, building piles of leaves during the fall, exploring creeks, and looking for rocks. I’ve always felt a close connection to nature; I was raised with a high regard for the outdoors and most of the fond memories of my childhood involve those woods behind my house.

Synthesis Of A Model Of The Bc Ring System Of Oxygenated Angucyclines, Xiaolan Wu, Abdullah Allaoa, Tony E. Nicolas
Synthesis Of A Model Of The Bc Ring System Of Oxygenated Angucyclines, Xiaolan Wu, Abdullah Allaoa, Tony E. Nicolas
Publications and Research
Angucycline is a subclass of natural antibiotics, containing a characteristic tetracyclic ring structure, and featuring a wide range of biological functions, including antitumor, antiviral and antifungal properties. This extraordinarily therapeutic character has interested many chemists to develop efficient methodologies for synthesizing the tetracyclic ring system of angucycline. Construction of the BC ring configuration appears as a synthetic challenge. Successful installation of hydroxyl groups at the AB junction would pave the way for efficient syntheses. As a continuation of the previous work done on this system, our synthetic methodology focuses on the coupling of a suitably substituted Phthalide and an activated …

As a young nursing student, Dr. Allison Abernathy was unsuccessful at a local community college and started looking for another school. Her mother-in-law had heard positive comments about the School of Nursing at Gardner-Webb University, so Abernathy contacted Dr. Shirley Toney, the dean in 1995. “Dr. Toney reviewed my coursework and admitted me into the ASN (Associate of Science in Nursing) program immediately,” she recalled. “She believed in me, and I knew I was where God wanted me to be in order to finish my nursing degree in such a nurturing environment.”

Simultaneous Uplc–Ms/Ms Analysis Of Two Stable Isotope Labeled Versions Of Sucrose In Mouse Plasma And Brain Samples As Markers Of Blood-Brain Barrier Permeability And Brain Vascular Space, Ekram Ahmed Chowdhury, Saad Alqahtani, Raktima Bhattacharya, Reza Mehvar, Ulrich Bickel
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) permeability is frequently compromised in the course of diseases affecting the central nervous system (CNS). Sucrose is a low molecular weight, hydrophilic marker with low permeability at the naive BBB and therefore one of the widely used indicators of barrier integrity. Our laboratory recently developed a highly sensitive UPLC-MS/MS method for stable isotope labelled [13C12]sucrose in biological matrices. Correction of total brain concentration for contribution of intravascular space is required in such experiments in order to accurately measure BBB permeability, and it is often accomplished by vascular perfusion with buffer solutions prior to brain sampling. The …
A Psychotheology Of Losing, Matthew D. Ruiz
A Psychotheology Of Losing, Matthew D. Ruiz
Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies
This paper explores what it means to lose in a contemporary American society. Kanter (2004) suggested that losing serves as an alarm, notifying one that it is time to recalibrate. For Duina (2011) losing offers a time for reexamination. Sports equates to winning and losing. Thanks to well-indoctrinated maxims like Lombardi’s “winning is the only thing” and a cultural rejection of “losers” we are in an era where the pursuit of winning trumps other variables which are also worthy of pursuit and consideration. Thus, losing becomes an insult to our ego-driven lives. As such, one cannot discuss losing without also …

Religiousness And Perceived God Perfectionism Among Elite Athletes, Benjamin J. Houltberg, Kenneth T. Wang, Sarah A. Schnitker
Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies
Little research has been conducted examining the link between athletes’ religious beliefs and practices and coping with the pressures related to elite competition. The purpose of the study was to investigate athletes’ global self-worth and perfectionistic concerns as key variables that link religiousness and perceived God perfectionism to dealing with performance failure and appraisals of upcoming competition. Self-report data was collected from a sample of 99 elite athletes (Mdn age = 22, 48% female, 89% believed in God) that were currently competing at a NCAA D1, professional or Olympic level. We used structural equation modeling to test direct and indirect …

Christianity And Sport Psychology: One Aspect Of Cultural Competence, Trevor J. Egli, Leslee A. Fisher
Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies
There is currently a dearth of literature relating to how applied sport psychology practitioners might work with a Christian sportsperson (Czech et al., 2004, Egli et al., 2014). Therefore, the purpose of this article is to provide practical suggestions for sport psychology practitioners based on relevant research related to Christianity and sport psychology as well as personal and professional experience. We first explain the various sport psychology roles before providing a brief review of literature. Studies related to Christian athletes, Christian coaches, Christian prayer within sport, and sport psychology consultants’ experiences of spirituality are presented. Lastly, the authors include four …

Exploring The Role Of Spirituality And Spiritual Beliefs In The Pursuit Of Excellence And Attainment Of Peak Performance In Professional Athletes, Ashley Ballard, Charles H. Wilson Jr.
Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies
Little research has been found which examines the assessment of spirituality in sport performers and its possible role in performance enhancement. The goal of the current study was to understand if and how spirituality impacts athleticism. The subjective experiences of Christian spirituality in an American World Sprinter (male), a British Olympic Sprint Canoe Racer (female), and a retired American Minor League Baseball player (male) were analyzed through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) (Smith & Osborn, 2003). Semi-structured interviews were used to gather data leading to three major themes: “The Belief and Confidence in God”, “Individual and Communal Prayer”, and “The Influential …

Scaling Up With Radically Embodied Cognition, Benjamin Aguda
Scaling Up With Radically Embodied Cognition, Benjamin Aguda
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Radically embodied cognitive science (REC) is typically concerned with basic cognition such as perception and action. However, complex cognition or higher-order cognition is difficult to explain for REC, as these theories eschew traditional representational explanations. This leaves REC with a scaling-up problem. In this dissertation I will explore options for REC to fix its scaling-up problem. I am specifically interested in autonoetic cognition, which is the ability to remember and imagine objects and events in the way they would be experienced if they were immediately present to be perceived. I contend that a simulationist account provides many of th necessary …

Establishing Cognitive Predictor Thresholds For Proficiency In Reading And Mathematics: Analysis Of The Woodcock-Johnson Iv Developmental-Age Norming Sample, Philip A. Norfolk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Assessment of specific learning disabilities (SLD) in educational settings is one important function of a school psychologist. The federal definition of SLD describes"underlying cognitive processing deficits" as part of the assessment criteria, that is also incorporated into several states' SLD eligibility criteria, that is difficult to directly evaluate using traditional assessment methods. Traditionally, use of norm-referenced scores have been used to compare an examinee's relative performance on assessment tests. Such a method does not provide direct evidence of underlying cognitive processing deficits associated with poor academic achievement. In an effort to directly inform this cognitive processing ability and academic proficiency …
Long-Term Neurocognitive, Behavior And Emotional Outcomes In Survivors Of Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Treated With Chemotherapy Only, Wei Liu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Contemporary chemotherapy results in a greater than 90% five-year survival rate from childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). However, long-term survivors of childhood ALL still present with a higher prevalence of neurocognitive function problems, specifically executive function deficits, and behavior emotional problems compared to the general population. We conducted two epidemiologic studies of these issues and a Phase II clinical trial to improve executive deficits among long-term childhood ALL survivors. First, we evaluated the association between sustained attention and parent-rated behavioral inattention at the end of chemotherapy, and neurocognitive outcomes at long-term follow-up (LTFU). Patients demonstrated higher frequency of impairment in …
The Effects Of Metabolic Formula On Growth Outcomes In Patients With Inborn Errors Of Protein Metabolism, Emily Ann West
The Effects Of Metabolic Formula On Growth Outcomes In Patients With Inborn Errors Of Protein Metabolism, Emily Ann West
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Background: Inborn errors of protein metabolism (IEPM) cause the build-up of certain amino acid by products in the body. The treatment for IEPMs is a metabolic formula that eliminates the amino acid that the person with the IEPM cannot metabolize. The purpose of this study was to determine if patients with an IEPM consuming metabolic formula were taller than healthy individuals. Methods: Analysis of height, weight, calories, protein, iron, and vitamin B12 were compared to height using a regression correlation. Proper growth was determined if the height-for-age curve was greater than the 50th percentile. Results: The mean height percentile was …

From Here I Saw What Happened And I Cried: Carrie Mae Weems And Critiquing Institutional Histories, Katherine Layne Kizer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
While scholarship on Carrie Mae Weems's series titled From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried often reflects the significance of the work as it relates to the African American experience and the African diaspora, critical discussion downplays the relationship the installation has to institutional critique and social practice. Through the course of this paper, I present extensive research on Weems's series. In order to conduct my investigation, I look to the genesis of the series in 1995 as a response piece to Hidden Witness. I then consider Weems's methodology and the way in which she appropriates historic photographs …

Data Collection, Body-Weight Generation And Efficient Storage Of Physiological Data, Dewashish Koirala
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Data is the key for developing algorithms that can infer the causes of agitation in mentally-ill individuals. Unfortunately, appropriate datasets are not readily available due to issues such as confidentiality breach and privacy invasion. This thesis addresses three problems.First, we identify a number of publicly-available datasets that are functions of actions and emotions of mentally-ill individuals. These include datasets of physiological signals, training videos and commercial movies.Second, we synthesize change in body-weight as a function of actions and emotions by extending a well-known model. The extended model is evaluated with respect to change in diet, physical activity and stress, using …

This dissertation introduces the work of Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin (b. 1932), and examines his approach to the genre of concerto for orchestra. Chapter one provides a brief survey of the current state of research on concertos for orchestra, as well as the composer's biography, and an overview of his compositional style. Chapter two focuses on the 1960s, the period when the first two concertos were written. It begins with an outline of the cultural and political climate that might have influenced the two pieces, and proceeds with the analysis of the Concerto for Orcehstra no. 1, the most popular …
Genomic Reconstruction Of The Tree Of Life, Sambriddhi Mainali
Genomic Reconstruction Of The Tree Of Life, Sambriddhi Mainali
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
A new methodology is presented for molecular phylogenetic analysis addressing a fundamental problem in biology, name the reconstruction of the Tree of Life (TOL). Here, phylogenies are based on patterns of hybridization similarity in their DNA. Furthermore, phylogenies are based on a set of universal biomarkers (so-called nxh chips) chosen a priori, independently of the target group of organisms. Therefore, this methodology enables analyses of groups with biologically distant organisms, hence could be scaled to obtain a universal tree of life. Unlike conventional molecular methods, it produces a hypothesis in a single run, without optimizing across numerous hypotheses for consensus. …
