USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

Text: I heard a couple months ago that the Youngs’s [neighbors] had a cousin named La-A and it was pronounced “La-dash-a.” I thought it was true at first but then I told it to some friends and they had heard it about other people, so I think it’s probably made up

Interviewers’ Ratings Of Respondents’ Health: Predictors And Association With Mortality, Dana Garbarski, Nora Cate Schaeffer, Jennifer Dykema, Deborah Carr Dec 2017

Interviewers’ Ratings Of Respondents’ Health: Predictors And Association With Mortality, Dana Garbarski, Nora Cate Schaeffer, Jennifer Dykema, Deborah Carr

Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Objectives

Recent research indicates that survey interviewers’ ratings of respondents’ health (IRH) may provide supplementary health information about respondents in surveys of older adults. Although IRH is a potentially promising measure of health to include in surveys, our understanding of the factors contributing to IRH remains incomplete. Methods

We use data from the 2011 face-to-face wave of the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, a longitudinal study of older adults from the Wisconsin high school class of 1957 and their selected siblings. We first examine whether a range of factors predict IRH: respondents’ characteristics that interviewers learn about and observe as respondents answer …

Managed Relocation: Reducing The Risk Of Biological Invasion, Edward E. Clark Jr., Dan Simberloff, Mark Schwartz, Brent Stewart, John Peter Thompson Dec 2017

Managed Relocation: Reducing The Risk Of Biological Invasion, Edward E. Clark Jr., Dan Simberloff, Mark Schwartz, Brent Stewart, John Peter Thompson

National Invasive Species Council

Key Finding

Any organism that is relocated to a novel ecosystem has the potential to become an invasive species or spread “hitching” invasive species, or both. Managed Relocation is not congruent with Executive Order 13112 to the extent that it might facilitate “economic or environmental harm or harm to human, animal, or plant health.” Consequently, the actions by federal agencies or those entities supported by federal funding to engage in managed relocation need to be addressed in a manner consistent with EO 13751 Section 3(3), which compels Agencies to:

Refrain from authorizing, funding, or implementing actions that are likely to …

Advanced Biotechnology Tools For Invasive Species Management, Invasive Species Advisory Committee Dec 2017

Advanced Biotechnology Tools For Invasive Species Management, Invasive Species Advisory Committee

National Invasive Species Council

Increasingly, genetic tools are being used to detect and solve pressing environmental, social, and health-related challenges. It is clear that investments in technology innovation can be game changing, as advances in biotechnology may provide new methods to protect the nation’s resources from the negative impacts of invasive species. The current toolbox of management options is recognizably insufficient to deal with many of the high-impact species that have been introduced. However, “surrendering” to these species is generally not a viable option from ecological, health, economic, socio-cultural, or political perspectives. Cost-efficient solutions to these “grand invasive species challenges” need to be found. …

"Clothes make a man. Naked people have little or no influence on society." - Mark Twain

Well, Mr. Twain, I beg to differ. Little did you know that we'd have naked dating shows, naked real estate shows and naked survival shows. Oh, and naked restaurants. I'm thinking naked people do have a wee bit of influence these days.

A Concurrent Validity Study Of Listening Comprehension Measures In English Language Learners (Ells), Jessica A. Day

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate valid measures of listening comprehension for English Language Learners (ELLs) in elementary school. The participants were Hispanic and recruited from the Hispanic Community Services Inc. in Jonesboro, AR. Each participant was administered a series of test batteries in the fall 2016 academic semester. The concurrent validity of the following assessments was determined through a correlational analysis: the Listening Comprehension subtest of the Woodcock Language Proficiency Battery- Revised (WLPB-R), the Listening Comprehension subtest of the Woodcock Reading Mastery Test- Third Edition (WRMT-III), and the Test for Auditory Comprehension of Language- Third Edition (TACL-3). …

Nuclear Genome Size Diversity Of Marine Invertebrate Taxa Using Flow Cytometric Analysis, Kyle Roebuck Dec 2017

Nuclear Genome Size Diversity Of Marine Invertebrate Taxa Using Flow Cytometric Analysis, Kyle Roebuck

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Genomic analysis provides a substantial amount of information on evolutionary history, novel genes, transcriptomic expression and regulation in response to environmental stimuli, how efficiently organisms utilize their genome, and directional genome evolution. Genome size analysis serves as the first step in the sequencing process, because sequencing and annotation costs are directly correlated with genome size. Invertebrates represent the vast majority of faunal diversity on the planet, and, to a greater extent, the marine environment, although they are vastly understudied when compared to vertebrate genomes. Flow cytometry is a widely used, reliable, and accurate means of estimating genome sizes and has …

Cornhusker Economics

Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) schemes have an important role in generating ecosystem services conservation and restoration benefits through adoption of various land uses on private agricultural property. These policies provide financial compensation to producers for benefits delivered over and above a baseline level and for any income losses arising from the land use change (Hanley et al. 2012). Examples of PES schemes include the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) in the U. S., the Pago por Servicios Ambientales in Costa Rica and the Stewardship Schemes in the U. K. to name a few.

Pros And Cons Of Marine Zoological Parks According To Marine Conservationists, Kayla L. Patama Dec 2017

Pros And Cons Of Marine Zoological Parks According To Marine Conservationists, Kayla L. Patama

HCNSO Student Capstones

Throughout history zoos and aquariums have satisfied a number of different, albeit to some, conflicting roles (Ballantyne, Packer, Hughes, & Dierking, 2007). In recent years, zoos and aquariums have shifted their focus on taking a proactive role in wildlife conservation and promoting conservation learning among their visitors. The present capstone addresses the justifications that marine conservationists see in marine zoological parks and how they believe parks can become more relevant and valuable in the future. A 65 question survey (Appendix I) was distributed to marine science professionals online through personal contact between June and September 2017 questioning participant’s personal opinions …

Religion And Politics: How Eiu Students View Policy, Sam Gilbert Dec 2017

Religion And Politics: How Eiu Students View Policy, Sam Gilbert

Student Honors Theses

Through this survey project, it is my intention to analyze the intersection of an individual’s religiosity and their tendency to support or oppose governmental programs and Trump’s political platform. From my personal experience and the information I have attained in my life, the more religious a person is, the more apt they are to hold conservative ideologies. Based on this information, it is safe to assume that the support for liberal-leaning programs would be considerably lower than their non-religious counterparts. However, based on my understanding of religion—specifically the Christian faith—an essential pillar is treating those around you with a love …
