Skinwalker Ranch, Natalie Randall Dec 2017

Skinwalker Ranch, Natalie Randall

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

So, in rural Utah, there’s this place called Skinwalker Ranch. And on this ranch, it’s pretty well known that there are some weird things that happen in regards to humans there. And nobody knows exactly what goes on in this place, but one time this group of high school kids, being high school kids, drive up on the ridge that is on the east end of the ranch, (I think it’s the east, I’m not positive), and they’re out away from the ranch a little ways, but if you park your car along the side of the road, and off …

Don’T Talk -Listen: The Power Of Silence In A Tutoring Session, Megan Ririe

Tutor's Column

Why is silence so scary? This paper explores the reasons behind why silence is so hard for us as tutors to utilize in our tutoring sessions, as well as the benefits of using silence and wait time. These benefits include an effective learning environment, a stronger understanding of the student and their assignment, and a respect for the student's ideas and authorship of their paper.

Identifying Victims Of Human Trafficking Within Health Care Settings, University Of Michigan Law School Dec 2017

Identifying Victims Of Human Trafficking Within Health Care Settings, University Of Michigan Law School

Event Materials

Program for a December 2017 Problem Solving Initiative at the University of Michigan Law School on the topic of identifying human trafficking victims in health care settings.

It is estimated that up to one third of all victims of human trafficking come into contact with a health care provider during their trafficking and are unrecognized. Health care settings offer a unique opportunity to identify victims of human trafficking and connect them with services and support. In a collaborative, multidisciplinary setting, students were tasked with developing innovations to increase the identification of victims of human trafficking in health care settings.

My History Teacher Is A Cia Agent, Thomas Lee Dec 2017

My History Teacher Is A Cia Agent, Thomas Lee

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

Text: I’ve heard tons of rumors that my history teacher is a CIA agent because he grew up in Panama on a government compound and his wife is a recruiter for the CIA and when they went to Washington DC for close up field, they flew separately, his daughter was “sick” the whole time, and they only saw him like once the whole trip. So, I mean, it seems like maybe he wasn’t just looking at the tourist stuff, so.... And he’s super smart, like I feel like he could be doing a lot more with his knowledge base then …

Man In The Back Seat, Thomas Lee

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

Utah State Women’S Soccer Pre-Game Starter Circle, Mealii Enos Dec 2017

Utah State Women’S Soccer Pre-Game Starter Circle, Mealii Enos

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

The starters will take the field after having a last cheer with the entire team. We will jog over to our side and circle up. Everyone puts their arms around each other and puts their right foot forward into the circle. The circle is super tight and close. During this time people will usually start saying encouraging things, or remind the team of things we need to remember for the game. Some examples of things people will say are “C’mon guys we got this” or “Let’s play our game.” Generally, upperclassmen and seniors will be talking during this time but …

Long-Term High Salt Intake Involves Reduced Sk Currents And Increased Excitability Of Pvn Neurons With Projections To The Rostral Ventrolateral Medulla In Rats, Andrew D. Chapp, Renjun Wang, Zixi Cheng, Zhiying Shan, Qing-Hui Chen Dec 2017

Long-Term High Salt Intake Involves Reduced Sk Currents And Increased Excitability Of Pvn Neurons With Projections To The Rostral Ventrolateral Medulla In Rats, Andrew D. Chapp, Renjun Wang, Zixi Cheng, Zhiying Shan, Qing-Hui Chen

Department of Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology Publications

Evidence indicates that high salt (HS) intake activates presympathetic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) neurons, which contributes to sympathoexcitation of salt-sensitive hypertension. The present study determined whether 5 weeks of HS (2% NaCl) intake alters the small conductance Ca2+-activated potassium channel (SK) current in presympathetic PVN neurons and whether this change affects the neuronal excitability. In whole-cell voltage-clamp recordings, HS-treated rats had significantly decreased SK currents compared to rats with normal salt (NS, 0.4% NaCl) intake in PVN neurons. The sensitivity of PVN neuronal excitability in response to current injections was greater in HS group compared to NS controls. The …

Gender, Sexual Agency, And Friends With Benefits Relationships, Jasna Jovanovic, Jean Williams Dec 2017

Gender, Sexual Agency, And Friends With Benefits Relationships, Jasna Jovanovic, Jean Williams

Political Science

Recent trends suggest that friends with benefits (FWB) relationships are prevalent among emerging adults on college campuses. Notably, young women are just as likely to participate in these relationships as young men, a finding that differentiates FWBs from heterosexual hook ups, where women traditionally report less participation. As such, it has been suggested that friends with benefits relationships may provide young women an avenue to explore and achieve sexual agency. Yet, whether emerging adults actually perceive friends with benefits relationships as affording women sexual agency has not been explored explicitly. In this study, we focus on female sexual agency and …

Nineteenth-Century American Religion And Politics In The West: Doctrinal Shifts In Mormonism And The Creation Of Utah, Katherine Manning Dec 2017

Nineteenth-Century American Religion And Politics In The West: Doctrinal Shifts In Mormonism And The Creation Of Utah, Katherine Manning

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

American religion and politics have always been closely intertwined. Though America was founded on ideals of religious pluralism and tolerance, the actual landscape of American religion often resembled the opposite of these ideas. As a religious majority, Protestants in the nineteenth-century believed in a specific American identity—one which championed the “virtuous” family and a capitalist market system. Yet, some religious organizations challenged these norms, making them the object of intense persecution. One of the most famous of these examples is the Mormons. From their “peculiar” beliefs to their separatist goals, Mormons presented the American people with a religious group which …
