Validation Of A New Rapid Hybridization Buffer For Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization With A Review On The Kinetics Of Dna Hybridization, Christine O'Connor
Validation Of A New Rapid Hybridization Buffer For Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization With A Review On The Kinetics Of Dna Hybridization, Christine O'Connor
Honors Scholar Theses
Abbott Molecular recently developed the rapid Vysis IntelliFISH Hybridization Buffer for use in fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assays. The hybridization step in a standard FISH assay requires an overnight incubation, thus the turnaround time for a patient result is at least 24 hours. The IntelliFISH buffer was designed to reduce hybridization time of probes to target DNA to about two hours, allowing the entire assay to be performed in a single day. A review of methodologies and commercial products has highlighted the importance of hybridization kinetics to a successful FISH assay. The purpose of the research was to investigate …

Introduction Of Iodised Salt Benefits Infants’ Mental Development In A Community-Based Cluster-Randomised Effectiveness Trial In Ethiopia, Karim Bougma, Frances E. Aboud, Tizita M. Lemma, Edward A. Frongillo Jr., Grace S. Marquis
Faculty Publications
The effectiveness of salt iodisation in improving the mental development of young children has not been assessed. We implemented a community-based cluster-randomised effectiveness trial in sixty randomly selected districts in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. We randomly allocated each district to treatment and randomly selected one of its villages. In parallel to national salt iodisation efforts, iodised salt was brought early into the markets of the thirty intervention villages before it became widely available in the thirty control villages 4–6 months later. The primary outcome was children’s mental development scores on the Bayley Scales. This was an intention-to-treat analysis using …

Demonstration Of Ultra-High Recyclable Energy Densities In Domain-Engineered Ferroelectric Films, Hongbo Cheng, Jun Ouyang, Yun-Xiang Zhang, David J. Ascienzo, Yao Li, Yu-Yao Zhao, Yuhang Ren
Publications and Research
Dielectric capacitors have the highest charge/discharge speed among all electrical energy devices, but lag behind in energy density. Here we report dielectric ultracapacitors based on ferroelectric films of Ba(Zr0.2,Ti0.8)O3 which display high-energy densities (up to 166 J cm–3) and efficiencies (up to 96%). Different from a typical ferroelectric whose electric polarization is easily saturated, these Ba(Zr0.2,Ti0.8)O3 films display a much delayed saturation of the electric polarization, which increases continuously from nearly zero at remnant in a multipolar state, to a large value under the maximum electric field, leading to drastically improved recyclable energy densities. This is achieved by the creation …

A Happy Marriage Of Inconvenience: The Power Of Adrienne De La Fayette Over Her Destiny In Eighteenth-Century France, Brittany I. Fox
A Happy Marriage Of Inconvenience: The Power Of Adrienne De La Fayette Over Her Destiny In Eighteenth-Century France, Brittany I. Fox
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
Extensive analysis and interpretation have occurred concerning the Marquis de Lafayette and his contributions to the American War for Independence and the Revolutionary French era. However, the discourse on his wife, Adrienne de Noailles, the Marquise de La Fayette, has been confined to a chapter within her husband's larger narrative. Examining her agency over her circumstances, Adrienne proves to be more than an idealistic angel suffering from a tumultuous time period.

Charged Particles In Oncology, Marco Durante, Francis A. Cucinotta, Jay Loeffler
Health Physics and Diagnostic Sciences Faculty Research
In this research topic, we invited scientists studying high-energy charged particles either for cancer treatment or for space radiation protection. We believe that space radiation protection and particle therapy share many common problems, and this research topic can be an inspiration to find applications and answers from fields that are apparently far away. Physics, biology, and medical contributions in this field will be found in the volume, owing to the fact that the field of charged particles in oncology is highly interdisciplinary
Development Of Herbicide Tolerant Tomato, Gourav Sharma
Development Of Herbicide Tolerant Tomato, Gourav Sharma
Theses and Dissertations
Tomato is a major horticulture crop grown across the globe. Unfortunately, its yield is reduced by 25% because of auxin herbicides and glyphosate drift. In this present study, wild germplasm of tomato was screened for herbicide tolerance. From the greenhouse study nine accessions for glyphosate and 2,4-D, eleven accessions for dicamba, five accessions for quinclorac, eight accessions for aminocyclopyrachlor, and two accessions for picloram and aminopyralid were identified to be tolerant. A few accessions were selected from each herbicide tolerant group for field trials at two locations in Mississippi in 2016 and 2017. Results indicated that TOM18 was most tolerant …
Assessing Visual Preference Among Fourth Grade Students For Habitat Components On Educational Green Roofs In Starkville, Mississippi, Amy Counterman
Assessing Visual Preference Among Fourth Grade Students For Habitat Components On Educational Green Roofs In Starkville, Mississippi, Amy Counterman
Theses and Dissertations
As urbanization grows wildlife habitat is displaced and fragmented. Vegetative roofs offer an innovative alternative to provide animal food and habitat in urban environments. This research study investigates how wildlife needs in a green roof ecosystem are interpreted through children’s visual perception. A visual preference survey was administered to fourth-grade students in Starkville, Mississippi which offered paired photographs displaying basic vertebrate and invertebrate needs. The responses from 85 students (n=85) were compared to identify preferences for legible habitat components. The results of this survey showed that fourth-grade students could readily identify the basic habitat needs for birds but were less …
African American Males' Identification Of Factors That Contributed To Their Community College Persistence, Ulissa Byshelle Coburn
African American Males' Identification Of Factors That Contributed To Their Community College Persistence, Ulissa Byshelle Coburn
Theses and Dissertations
In spite of an expanding enrollment of African American males in community colleges in the United States, the early departure of this minority group is one of concern. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore African American males’ identification of the factors that contributed to their persistence at community colleges. Data were collected through structured interviews with 7 African American male community college graduates who were enrolled at a 4-year university when the study was conducted. Data were analyzed through by coding and categorizing in order to determine themes. Social integration and social cognitive models were used to …
An Analysis Of Signaling Processes Leading To A Defense Response In Soybean, Brandon Trey Mcneece
An Analysis Of Signaling Processes Leading To A Defense Response In Soybean, Brandon Trey Mcneece
Theses and Dissertations
Plant-parasitic nematodes are the cause of devastating yield loss in vital agricultural crops around the world. Heterodera glycines, also referred to as soybean cyst nematode, is the main pathogen of Glycine max (soybean) causing more loss than all other pathogens of G. max combined. The resultant economic impact due to H. glycines in United States soybean production alone is estimated to account for an annual one-billion-dollar loss. Natural resistant genotypes have been found in trials to combat this pathogen. Of the resistant varieties identified, G. max[Peking/PI 548402] and G. max[PI 88788] are the major sources of resistance. Identification of genes …

A Survey Of Nearby M-Dwarfs With Robo-Ao, Amy Elaine Ray
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents the results of a survey of 913 M-dwarf stars from the Lepine and Shara Proper Motion (LSPM) catalog within 33 parsecs. Data for these targets was collected with the Robo-AO camera on the Palomar 60” telescope. In order to determine which stars were in bound systems, the images with multiple stars, first observed in 2012, were observed again in 2014 to examine changes in separation and position angles. Stars with little change in position with respect to one another suggest they are common proper motion pairs. The Washington Double Star (WDS) catalog and other resources were used …

The U.S. Department of Labor reports that only 5% of U.S. workers are employed in fields related to science and engineering, yet they are responsible for more than 50% of our sustained economic expansion (U.S Department of Labor, 2007). Furthermore, minorities makeup 0.0025 % (1/400) of that Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) workforce. Methods are currently underway to understand and address the attrition of minority students in the STEM workforce. The problem of underrepresentation of minorities (URMs) in STEM careers continues to result in a “leaky pipeline” where URMs have cited institutional factors such “chilly campus” climates as barriers …

In addition to activated T cells, the immune checkpoint inhibitor “V domain-containing Ig suppressor of T-cell activation” (VISTA) is expressed by myeloid cell types, including macrophages and neutrophils. The importance of VISTA expression by myeloid cells to antibody-induced arthritis and its potential for relevance in human disease was evaluated. Methods: VISTA was immunolocalized in normal and arthritic human synovial tissue sections and synovial tissue lysates were subjected to western blot analysis. The collagen antibody-induced arthritis model (CAIA) was performed with DBA/1 J mice treated with antibodies against VISTA and with VISTA-deficient mice (V-KO). Total mRNA from arthritic joints, spleens, and …

Gender And Domain Differences In College Students’ Responses To Success And Failure, Elizabeth K. Lawner
Gender And Domain Differences In College Students’ Responses To Success And Failure, Elizabeth K. Lawner
Doctoral Dissertations
Four studies examined perceptions of STEM and non-STEM college courses, gender and domain differences in responses to success and failure, and whether interventions to make failure seem normative could ameliorate negative responses to failure, particularly among women. Study 1 found that college students perceive STEM courses as more difficult than non-STEM courses, and believe that introductory STEM courses are used to remove students from those fields. Moreover, the difference in perceptions of STEM and non-STEM courses was larger for women. Study 2 piloted a novel task that was used in Studies 3 and 4. These studies did not support the …

A Correlation Study On Soil Selenium Content And Diabetes Mellitus In Contiguous United States, Yang-Chih Tsao
Theses and Dissertations
Selenium, the essential trace element, is well known as its antioxidant function, antiviral properties, and its anti-inflammatory function to human health. The relationships between selenium status and diabetes mellitus have been widely studied, but the consistency of results is lacking. This study used diagnosed diabetes incidence from year 2004 to 2012 and soil selenium content by counties within 48 contiguous states in the U.S. with Generalized Linear Mixed Model- R-Side as the major statistical method to determine whether there is a significant correlation or not. Results showed that the diagnosed diabetes population had been increased from 2004 to 2012 for …
More Than Just Talking: The Role Of Self-Disclosure In The Fast Friends Procedure, Chloe Shearer
More Than Just Talking: The Role Of Self-Disclosure In The Fast Friends Procedure, Chloe Shearer
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The Fast Friends (FF) procedure was developed to generate feelings of closeness in the laboratory through escalating, mutual self-disclosure by partners (Aron, Melinant, Aron, Vallone, & Bator, 1997). Research indicates that, in addition to generating feelings of closeness, self-disclosure can also benefit mood. This study examined not only the total, but also the relative amount of self-disclosure between dyad partners in the FF vs. control condition. It was found that while participants in FF engaged in more self-disclosure overall, disclosure within FF dyads was not equitable. Contrary to prediction, the FF procedure did not generate more positive feelings than the …
Improved Heuristic Search Algorithms For Decision-Theoretic Planning, Ibrahim Abdoulahi
Improved Heuristic Search Algorithms For Decision-Theoretic Planning, Ibrahim Abdoulahi
Theses and Dissertations
A large class of practical planning problems that require reasoning about uncertain outcomes, as well as tradeoffs among competing goals, can be modeled as Markov decision processes (MDPs). This model has been studied for over 60 years, and has many applications that range from stochastic inventory control and supply-chain planning, to probabilistic model checking and robotic control. Standard dynamic programming algorithms solve these problems for the entire state space. A more efficient heuristic search approach focuses computation on solving these problems for the relevant part of the state space only, given a start state, and using heuristics to identify irrelevant …
Use Of Software Modeling Tools To Understand Population Health Dynamics: Application To Bovine Respiratory Disease In Us Beef Calves Prior To Weaning, Min Wang
Theses and Dissertations
Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a significant health problem for cattle producers in terms of economic cost and animal welfare. In the United States (US), it is one of the leading causes of sickness and death in beef calves prior to weaning. Although much research has been conducted to develop vaccines for prevention and antibiotics for treatment, the morbidity and mortality of BRD in beef calves prior to weaning has not improved over the years. The identification of risk factors associated with BRD is an area of focus which might ultimately allow producers to minimize morbidity and mortality from BRD. …
One Good Plaintiff Is Not Enough, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl
One Good Plaintiff Is Not Enough, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl
Duke Law Journal
This Article concerns an aspect of Article III standing that has played a role in many of the highest-profile controversies of recent years, including litigation over the Affordable Care Act, immigration policy, and climate change. Although the federal courts constantly emphasize the importance of ensuring that only proper plaintiffs invoke the federal judicial power, the Supreme Court and other federal courts have developed a significant exception to the usual requirement of standing. This exception holds that a court entertaining a multiple-plaintiff case may dispense with inquiring into the standing of each plaintiff as long as the court finds that one …
Creating A More Certain Standard For Enhanced Patent Damages By Requiring Egregiousness As An Element In The Section 284 Analysis, Brian Barnes
Duke Law Journal
According to 35 U.S.C. § 284, district courts have the power to “increase the damages up to three times the amount found or assessed” by the jury in patent infringement cases where willful infringement occurred. Following the recent Supreme Court decision in Halo Electronics, Inc. v. Pulse Electronics, Inc., it is now less clear how courts are to go about deciding whether to exercise this power. Halo established that the decision lies within the discretion of the district court judge, but declined to give a more concrete standard than urging the judge to “take into account the particular circumstances …
Algorithms & Fiduciaries: Existing And Proposed Regulatory Approaches To Artificially Intelligent Financial Planners, John Lightbourne
Algorithms & Fiduciaries: Existing And Proposed Regulatory Approaches To Artificially Intelligent Financial Planners, John Lightbourne
Duke Law Journal
Artificial intelligence is no longer solely in the realm of science fiction. Today, basic forms of machine learning algorithms are commonly used by a variety of companies. Also, advanced forms of machine learning are increasingly making their way into the consumer sphere and promise to optimize existing markets. For financial advising, machine learning algorithms promise to make advice available 24–7 and significantly reduce costs, thereby opening the market for financial advice to lower-income individuals. However, the use of machine learning algorithms also raises concerns. Among them, whether these machine learning algorithms can meet the existing fiduciary standard imposed on human …
Cross-Curricular Writing In Mathematics For Comprehension, Kirsten Stowell
Cross-Curricular Writing In Mathematics For Comprehension, Kirsten Stowell
Honors Theses
Even though the idea of implementing writing in a mathematics classroom is far from new and the benefits from doing so are hardly nonexistent, this concept is often not found in modern secondary mathematics classrooms. Writing about mathematics allows students to organize and communicate their thinking, gain a better conceptual understanding of mathematical topics, develop a stronger sense of mathematical procedure, move beyond surface-level thinking, and place abstract ideas into context. Writing can also be used by teachers as a formative assessment to explicitly determine if students are struggling conceptually or procedurally in a mathematics classroom to then adjust instruction …
