Micromechanical Modeling Of The Soil Water Retention Curve Using A Coupled Discrete Element-Lattice Boltzmann Method, Jonathan Frank Fili
Micromechanical Modeling Of The Soil Water Retention Curve Using A Coupled Discrete Element-Lattice Boltzmann Method, Jonathan Frank Fili
Theses and Dissertations
The Soil Water Retention Curve (SWRC) is a key constitutive relationship describing the behavior of variably saturated soils. The objective of this research is to assess the performance of a hydro-mechanical model, developed by coupling the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) with the discrete element method (DEM), for micromechanical simulation of the SWRC. The DEM-LBM model is used to examine the effects of wave propagation on fluid-solid interaction. A multi-phase LBM is then employed within a static particle array generated by the DEM to examine the effects of initial fluid density distribution. The SWRCs are generated by recording the liquid pore …
Numerical Simulations Of Breaking Waves And Vehicle Fording Using Openfoam, Bradley Paul Chambers
Numerical Simulations Of Breaking Waves And Vehicle Fording Using Openfoam, Bradley Paul Chambers
Theses and Dissertations
The simulation of solitary wave run up on a slope is evaluated using a volume of fluid method in OpenFOAM. The simulated results are compared to experimental and nonlinear potential flow results for a 1 to 15 run up slope. The breaking region profile is shown to agree well with previous results except a larger jet tip calculated by OpenFOAM. Elevation through the run up of the wave is compared to the same data set. OpenFOAM shows a decreased peak amplitude when compared. A grid study is completed. The dissipation is investigated and a correction is applied to the OpenFOAM …
Introducing New Energy Dissipation Mechanisms For Steel Fiber Reinforcement In Ultra-High Performance Concrete, Dylan Andrew Scott
Introducing New Energy Dissipation Mechanisms For Steel Fiber Reinforcement In Ultra-High Performance Concrete, Dylan Andrew Scott
Theses and Dissertations
By adding annealed plain carbon steel fibers and stainless steel fibers into Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC), we have increased UHPC’s toughness through optimized thermal processing and alloy selection of steel fiber reinforcements. Currently, steel fiber reinforcements used in UHPCs are extremely brittle and have limited energy dissipation mainly through debonding due to matrix crumbling with some pullout. Implementing optimized heat treatments and selecting proper alternative alloys can drastically improve the post-yield carrying capacity of UHPCs for static and dynamic applications through plastic deformations, phase transformations, and fiber pullout. By using a phase transformable stainless steel, the ultimate flexural strength increased …
Structure-Property Relations Of The Exoskeleton Of The Ironclad Beetle (Zopherus Nodulosus Haldemani), Vina Le Nguyen
Structure-Property Relations Of The Exoskeleton Of The Ironclad Beetle (Zopherus Nodulosus Haldemani), Vina Le Nguyen
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, structure-property relationships in the ironclad beetle (Zopherus nodulosus haldemani) exoskeleton are quantified to develop novel bio-inspired impact resistance technologies. The hierarchical structure of this exoskeleton was observed at various length scales for both the ironclad beetle pronotum and elytron. The exocuticle and endocuticle layers provide the bulk of the structural integrity and consist of chitiniber planes arranged in a Bouligand structure. The pronotum consists of a layered structure, while elytron consists of an extra layer with “tunnel-like” voids running along the anteroposterior axis along with smaller interconnecting “tunnel-like” voids in the lateral plane. Energy dispersive X-ray diffraction …
Investigation Of Temperature Ratio Effect On The Low-Frequency Acoustic Spectra Of Heated Jets, Sofia Karam
Investigation Of Temperature Ratio Effect On The Low-Frequency Acoustic Spectra Of Heated Jets, Sofia Karam
Theses and Dissertations
Jet noise remains one of the most important problems in the aviation industry, and its reduction is sought in the context of both commercial and military aircraft. In this thesis, an investigation of the jet noise is conducted in terms of the effect of temperature and Mach number on low frequency acoustic spectra. A low-order model derived from the generalized acoustic analogy method via a lowrequency asymptotic approach is utilized, where the mean flow and pertinent statistical quantities are obtained from RANS simulations. The study involves a combination of seven acoustic Mach numbers ranging from 0.3 to 1.5 and five …
Investigation Of The Directed Self-Assembly Process In Bacteriophage Virus Structures Using The Discrete Element Method, David Peter Mcinnis
Investigation Of The Directed Self-Assembly Process In Bacteriophage Virus Structures Using The Discrete Element Method, David Peter Mcinnis
Theses and Dissertations
Current researchers have looked to nature to learn how self-assembly processes occur. By understanding the self-assembly process, designers can begin to build strong structural materials that are extremely light weight. The discrete element modeling method was used to gain a better understanding of the directed self-assembly of M13 bacteriophage. This model was parameterized from molecular dynamics simulations at the nanometer scale. Three types of functionalized bacteriophage were studied: Wild-type, 4E, and CLP8. Results showed that Wild-type phage are attracted in a head-to-tail orientation, but repelled in head-to-head orientation. The 4E bacteriophage behaved similarly with a stronger bond in the head-to-tail …
Large-Scale Graph Visual Analytics, Fangyan Zhang
Large-Scale Graph Visual Analytics, Fangyan Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Large-scale graph analysis and visualization is becoming a more challenging task, due to the increasing amount of graph data. This dissertation focuses on methods to ease the task of exploring large-scale graphs through graph sampling and visualization. Graph sampling aims to reduce the complexity of graph drawing, while preserving properties of the original graph, allowing analysis of the smaller sample which yields the characteristics similar to those of the original graph. Graph visualization is an effective and intuitive approach to observing structures within graph data. For large-scale graphs, graph sampling and visualization are straightforward strategies to gain insights into common …

We evaluate lithofacies, chronology, and seismic sequences from the Canterbury Basin, New Zealand passive continental slope (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program [IODP] Expedition 317 Site U1352 and environs) and compare this with slope sequences from the New Jersey passive margin. Our goal is to understand continental slope sedimentation in response to glacio-eustasy and test the concepts of sequence stratigraphy. High-resolution geochemical elemental and lithostratigraphic analyses were calibrated to a chronology constructed from benthic foramininferal oxygen isotopes for the past ~1.8 m.y. We identify lithofacies successions by their unique geochemical and lithologic signature and correlate them with marine isotope stages (MIS) at …
Governance Challenges In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Case Of Land Guards And Land Protection In Ghana, David Kwasi Bansah
Governance Challenges In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Case Of Land Guards And Land Protection In Ghana, David Kwasi Bansah
Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations
Land management policy in many developing nations has been riddled with conflict because of competing land tenure systems. Having transitioned through customary tenure systems to bureaucratic property rights regimes without a complete shift from the former, Ghana’s land management system, over time, has witnessed administrative challenges such that some desperate land protection schemes are taking root, including the use of unregulated security land guards in peri-urban areas. The fundamental objective of this research, therefore, is to explore and better understand the lengths to which people or groups will go to ensure land rights and protection in a regime of statutory …

Validation Of The Two-Parameter Fracture Criterion Using Critical Ctoa On 7075-T6 Aluminum Alloy, Hasnaa Ouidadi
Theses and Dissertations
A two-parameter fracture criterion (TPFC) is used to correlate and predict failure loads on cracked configurations made of ductile materials. The current study was conducted to validate the use of the fracture criterion on more brittle materials, using elastic-plastic finite-element analyses with the critical crack-tip-opening angle (CTOA) failure criterion. Forman generated fracture data on middle-crack tension, M(T), specimens made of thin-sheet 7075-T6 aluminum alloy, which is a quasi-brittle material. The fracture data included a wide range of specimen widths (2w) ranging from 3 to 24 inches. A two-dimensional (2D) finite-element analysis code (ZIP2D) with a ''plane-strain core" option was used …

We report results of a deep all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves from isolated neutron stars in data from the first Advanced LIGO observing run. This search investigates the low frequency range of Advanced LIGO data, between 20 and 100 Hz, much of which was not explored in initial LIGO. The search was made possible by the computing power provided by the volunteers of the Einstein@Home project. We find no significant signal candidate and set the most stringent upper limits to date on the amplitude of gravitational wave signals from the target population, corresponding to a sensitivity depth of 48.7 …

Greenhouse Gas Fluxes From Created Wetlands: How Management Techniques Impact Emissions And Implications For Climate Change, Thulfiqar Ali Jasim Al-Graiti
Theses
Wetlands are one of the most valuable ecosystems, providing services such as carbon sequestration and nitrogen removal. Studies suggest that created wetlands may not function the same as natural wetlands and management techniques, such as organic matter addition (OM), have been proposed to promote natural functions. The objective of this study was to understand the effects of OM additions on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in created wetlands with different vegetation, hydrology and soil characteristics. This study was conducted from 2016 to 2017 at two created wetlands (A2S and A3A) at High Acres Nature Area in Fairport, New York. There was …

The Misconception Of Social Anxiety Disorder: Creating Understanding Through Motion Graphics, Kaijun Qu
Theses
This thesis project explores Social Anxiety Disorder, by showing emotions and feelings of the person who suffers from social phobia to help his/her friends and classmates to understand them.
The symptoms of a person with social phobia can be seen as being afraid of communicating with other people, appearing in public, and/or being the center of attention. In such situations, others may easily misunderstand them, so the patient can lose the chance to communicate to others. As a result, the patient's condition will be getting worse. Therefore, it is very hard for people with social phobia to make new friends. …

Numerical Modelling Of The Acoustics Of Low Density Fibrous Media Having A Distribution Of Fiber Sizes, Thomas Herdtle, Yutong Xue, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
The focus of the present work was on a low density, polymeric, fibrous medium, comprising a mix of blown micro-fibers, having a relatively broad fiber size distribution, and a second, so-called staple fiber component having a very narrow fiber size distribution. The airflow resistivity of such a material is usually considered to be its most important macroscopic property when it comes to defining the material’s acoustical properties (since the tortuosity and the porosity are very close to unity, for example). Thus, in the first instance, it is of interest to be able to calculate the flow resistivity of such a …

Fibrous Material Microstructure Design For Optimal Damping Performance, Yutong Xue, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Properly designed and manufactured fibrous media can be very effective at absorbing airborne sound, and as a result, glass fiber and polymeric fiber media are used in a wide variety of noise control applications. The value of these treatments could be increased if they could also be used to damp the vibration of structures to which they are attached. The materials could then serve a multi-functional role, thus reducing the number of elements required to achieve a specified level of noise and vibration performance, and also reducing the total weight of a sound package, an outcome of particular interest at …
Identification And Quantification Of Cyanide And Its Metabolites In Lemur Urine, Jeremy Peralta
Identification And Quantification Of Cyanide And Its Metabolites In Lemur Urine, Jeremy Peralta
Student Theses
Cyanide is a chemical compound that contains the monovalent groups of carbon and nitrogen. This substance is considered a rapidly acting deadly chemical. However, some animals such as lemurs consume food products that are known to contain elevated levels of cyanide without major consequences. The mechanism by which the lemur can handle this high exposure to cyanide is unknown. In this study, we developed and validated two analytical methods for the determination of cyanide and two metabolites, thiocyanate and 2-aminothiazoline-4-carboxylic acid (ATCA) in lemur urine. The method was applied to 47 authentic lemur urine samples collected from 4 different species …
Past Observable Dynamics Of A Continuously Monitored Qubit, Luis Pedro García-Pinto, Justin Dressel
Past Observable Dynamics Of A Continuously Monitored Qubit, Luis Pedro García-Pinto, Justin Dressel
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Monitoring a quantum observable continuously in time produces a stochastic measurement record that noisily tracks the observable. For a classical process, such noise may be reduced to recover an average signal by minimizing the mean squared error between the noisy record and a smooth dynamical estimate. We show that for a monitored qubit, this usual procedure returns unusual results. While the record seems centered on the expectation value of the observable during causal generation, examining the collected past record reveals that it better approximates a moving-mean Gaussian stochastic process centered at a distinct (smoothed) observable estimate. We show that this …
