Design, build, and sell a safe automated primary color dye mixer to schools for the purpose of teaching children how 12 secondary colors (and shades) on a color wheel can be made via the primary colors. The user will select the desired color (on a color wheel) and the machine will automatically deposit the correct amount of each primary color to create the selected color (or shade). The dye will diffuse in the cup, to create the desired color. Dye will be used in the machine so that if a mess is made, the cleanup is easy. However, we will …

Tissue Stretching Device, Usama Ismail, Humza Ismail, Elvir Sarajlic Dec 2017

Tissue Stretching Device, Usama Ismail, Humza Ismail, Elvir Sarajlic

Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class

This tissue loading project consists of designing an apparatus that has two main functions. The first, and most obvious of these, being creating a device that will deform a band or disk of tissue with cells pre-seeded on them uniaxially while recording the stress and strain, specifically strain rate, that is applied to the tissue. While the deformation aspect of this device will be key, an equally important part of this project will be designing a part of our tissue loader that mimics the environmental chamber that the lab already uses or is compatible with the environmental chamber that is …

Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Unlike their counterparts in bacterial and higher eukaryotic hosts, most fungal viruses are transmitted intracellularly and lack an extracellular phase. Here we determined the cryo-EM structure at 3.7 Å resolution of Rosellinia necatrix quadrivirus 1 (RnQV1), a fungal double-stranded (ds)RNA virus. RnQV1, the type species of the family Quadriviridae, has a multipartite genome consisting of four monocistronic segments. Whereas most dsRNA virus capsids are based on dimers of a single protein, the ~450-Å-diameter, T = 1 RnQV1 capsid is built of P2 and P4 protein heterodimers, each with more than 1000 residues. Despite a lack of sequence similarity between …

Some Dimension Reduction Strategies For The Analysis Of Survey Data, Jiaying Weng, Derek S. Young Dec 2017

Some Dimension Reduction Strategies For The Analysis Of Survey Data, Jiaying Weng, Derek S. Young

Statistics Faculty Publications

In the era of big data, researchers interested in developing statistical models are challenged with how to achieve parsimony. Usually, some sort of dimension reduction strategy is employed. Classic strategies are often in the form of traditional inference procedures, such as hypothesis testing; however, the increase in computing capabilities has led to the development of more sophisticated methods. In particular, sufficient dimension reduction has emerged as an area of broad and current interest. While these types of dimension reduction strategies have been employed for numerous data problems, they are scantly discussed in the context of analyzing survey data. This …

Elie Wiesel's Unique Journey To Redemption, Julia Click

Undergraduate Theses

There is an important connection between ideology and rehabilitation after a traumatic experience that I aim to examine in my thesis. In particular, I wish to focus on the Holocaust. Looking at Elie Wiesel, I wish to examine the memoirs of this man and the life he lived after he was freed from the concentration camps. I aim to analyze his memoir and look at how he dealt with his experiences through his writing in contrast to other Holocaust survivors. With my thesis, I will examine the way this man coped with being a survivor of the Holocaust. My thesis …

Editorial: Murine Models Of Leukemia And Lymphoma, Christine E. Cutucache, Pierluigi Porcu Dec 2017

Editorial: Murine Models Of Leukemia And Lymphoma, Christine E. Cutucache, Pierluigi Porcu

Biology Faculty Publications

Murine models serve as an effective way to mimic the in vivo tumor microenvironmental interactions that take place in patients with leukemias and lymphomas. Specifically, leukemias and lymphomas rely heavily on the surrounding stroma and tissue microenvironmental cytokine and chemokine signals to ensure survival and expansion of tumor cells. Finally, leukemic cells migrate thanks to signals from varying regions of the host, furthering the progression and severity of disease. It is therefore impossible to fully understand such a dynamic relationship between tumor cells and their surrounding microenvironment, and the events to transformation in leukemias and lymphomas without an in vivo, …

Exploring The Determinants Of Vulnerable Road Users' Crash Severity In State Roads, Àlvaro Alfonso Caviedes Cómbita Dec 2017

Exploring The Determinants Of Vulnerable Road Users' Crash Severity In State Roads, Àlvaro Alfonso Caviedes Cómbita

Dissertations and Theses

Pedestrians and bicyclists are the most vulnerable road users and suffer the most severe consequences when crashes take place. An extensive literature is available for crash severity in terms of driver safety, but fewer studies have explored non-motorized users' crash severity. Furthermore, most research efforts have examined pedestrian and bicyclist crash severity in urban areas. This study focuses on state roads (mostly outside major urban areas) and aims to identify contributing risk factors of fatal and severe crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists in state roads. Two ordinal regression models were developed (one for pedestrian and the other for bicyclist crashes) …

Authentic Leadership, Research Integrity, And Institutions Of Higher Learning: Why Focusing On Departmental Leadership Is Critical For Preserving The Sanctity Of Science, Katherine I. Echols Dec 2017

Authentic Leadership, Research Integrity, And Institutions Of Higher Learning: Why Focusing On Departmental Leadership Is Critical For Preserving The Sanctity Of Science, Katherine I. Echols

Theses and Dissertations

One of the most overlooked and complex problems that universities and colleges face nation-wide is how to reduce and eliminate research misconduct. Because of the confidential nature of allegations of research misconduct and the high rate of underreporting, administrators at scholarly institutions struggle with understanding the cause of such behavior. Without a clear picture of the prevalence of misconduct or the barriers to reporting, leaders at institutions of higher learning find themselves at a disadvantage when dealing with these problems. This uncertainty coupled with a growing regulatory emphasis from federal funding agencies, results in a reactionary approach while questionable practices …

Effect Of Water Temperature, Angling Time, And Dissolved Oxygen Concentration On The Survival Of Angled And Tournament-Handled Largemouth Bass, Kevin Randy Keretz Dec 2017

Effect Of Water Temperature, Angling Time, And Dissolved Oxygen Concentration On The Survival Of Angled And Tournament-Handled Largemouth Bass, Kevin Randy Keretz

Theses and Dissertations

Largemouth Bass Micropterus salmoides is the most sought after species by recreational anglers in the United States. Survival of angled and tournament-handled Largemouth Bass is related to numerous factors; however, the independent effects of water temperature, angling time, and live well dissolved oxygen concentration on survival have not been measured. Survival was evaluated in simulated catch and release and tournament trials over the range of temperatures encountered by Largemouth Bass anglers (17-33°C) while also testing independent effects of angling time, live well temperature, and live well dissolved oxygen treatments. Caught-and-released Largemouth Bass experienced 100% survival at temperatures ≤33°C after 1 …

Deterministic And Random Isogeometric Analysis Of Fluid Flow In Unsaturated Soils, Shahriar Shahrokhabadi Dec 2017

Deterministic And Random Isogeometric Analysis Of Fluid Flow In Unsaturated Soils, Shahriar Shahrokhabadi

Theses and Dissertations

The main objective of this research is to use IGA as an efficient and robust alternative for numerical simulation of unsaturated seepage problems. Moreover, this research develops an IGA-based probabilistic framework that can properly account for the variability of soil hydraulic properties in the simulations. In the first part, IGA is used in a deterministic framework to solve a head-based form of Richards’ equation. It is shown that IGA is able to properly simulate changes in pore pressure at the soils interface. In the second part of this research, a new probabilistic framework, named random IGA (RIGA), is developed. A …

An Application Of Roger Ulrich's Methods: Designing A Healing Garden For African American Women Living In Low-Income Public Housing, Juriel Annishia Rogers

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this preference study is to identify the effects that the presence of a healing garden may have, on the perceived stress of African American women living in in low-income public housing. Literature states that women who live in public housing experience higher rates of malnutrition, fatigue, susceptibility to infection, and premature death (Adler et al., 1994; Whelch and Kneipp, 2005). Few of these studies address healing gardens as solutions. The explanation of behavior while visiting a healing garden in this study will help to identify particular aspects of gardens that are perceived as therapeutic. This research compared …

Does Prior Nssi Moderate The Relationship Between Alcohol Intoxication, Pain, And Deliberate Self-Harm?, Matthew A. Timmins Dec 2017

Does Prior Nssi Moderate The Relationship Between Alcohol Intoxication, Pain, And Deliberate Self-Harm?, Matthew A. Timmins

Theses and Dissertations

Experimental studies suggest alcohol facilitates deliberate self-harm (DSH). One explanation might be that alcohol increases pain tolerance (PT), which may then lead to DSH. This study aimed to examine whether PT mediated the relationship between alcohol and DSH. Further, alcohol is neither necessary nor sufficient to self-harm. Given past non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a good predictor of future DSH, NSSI may moderate these relationships. This study also aimed to examine if mediation was conditional upon past NSSI. Participants (106 men and 104 women) reported on past NSSI and received a drink sufficient to produce target blood-alcohol content (BAC = .000%, …

Application Of Food-Grade Ingredient Treated Nets To Control Tyrophagus Putrescentiae (Schrank) (Sarcoptiformes: Acaridae) Infestations On Dry Cured Hams, Xue Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) (Sarcoptiformes: Acaridae), also known as the ham mite, may infest dry cured hams during the aging process. The fumigant methyl bromide is currently used to control mite infestations, but eventually will not be available for use since it contributes to the depletion of the ozone layer. The use of ham nets treated with xanthan gum, carrageenan, propylene glycol alginate, propylene glycol (PG), and lard were evaluated for their impact on mite orientation to or oviposition on treated or untreated ham cubes, mite reproduction and population growth over a 10-week period. When nets were infused with gum and …

An Examination Of Child Abuse Disclosures In Mississippi: The Effects Of Child And Interviewer Characteristics, Morgan Colley

Theses and Dissertations

Each year, hundreds of thousands of children fall victim to child abuse in the United States, most often perpetrated by a parent or legal guardian (Children’s Bureau – An Office of the Administration for Children and Families, 2015). The current project used secondary data from a Children’s Advocacy Center to explore abuse disclosure rates in forensic interviews. The three main objectives of this project were as follows: 1) to determine whether children with certain demographic characteristics (i.e., race, gender, and age) were more likely to disclose abuse, 2) to determine whether interviewers with certain demographic characteristics (i.e., race and age) …

"A Grave Subject:" Hollywood Cemetery And The Ideology Of Death In Mid-Nineteenth Century America, Kelli Brooke Nelson Dec 2017

"A Grave Subject:" Hollywood Cemetery And The Ideology Of Death In Mid-Nineteenth Century America, Kelli Brooke Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

During the nineteenth century, Americans began to develop a new relationship with death. Urbanites were less confronted with the constant presence of the dead and dying than they had in the past. A new trend in cemeteries also developed as a result. The Rural Cemetery Movement promoted the idea that the dead should be buried amongst a natural setting that was pleasing and calming to visitors. The first few initial cemeteries were an immediate success, but this was not the case in Richmond, Virginia. Although the developers had grand ideas about their cemetery project, Richmonders opposed the cemetery in the …

"Deep" South: Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, And Environmental Knowledge, 1800-1974, Alyssa Diane Warrick

Theses and Dissertations

Mammoth Cave in Kentucky is the longest known cave in the world. This dissertation examines the history of how scientists and non-scientists alike contributed to a growing body of knowledge about Mammoth Cave and how that knowledge in turn affected land use decisions in the surrounding neighborhood. During the nineteenth century visitors traveled through Mammoth Cave along with their guides, gaining knowledge of the cave by using their senses and spreading that knowledge through travel narratives. After the Civil War, cave guides, now free men who chose to stay in the neighborhood, used the cave as a way to build …

Heterogeneous Anisotropy Index And Scaling In Multiphase Random Polycrystals, Muhammad Ridwan Murshed Dec 2017

Heterogeneous Anisotropy Index And Scaling In Multiphase Random Polycrystals, Muhammad Ridwan Murshed

Theses and Dissertations

Under consideration is the finite-size scaling of elastic properties in single and two-phase random polycrystals with individual grains belonging to any crystal class (from cubic to triclinic). These polycrystals are generated by Voronoi tessellations with varying grain sizes and volume fractions. By employing variational principles in elasticity, we introduce the notion of a 'Heterogeneous Anisotropy Index' and investigate its role in the scaling of elastic properties at finite mesoscales. The index turns out to be a function of 43 variables, 21 independent components for each phase and the volume fraction of either phase. Furthermore, the relationship between Heterogeneous Anisotropy Index …

Bayesian Prediction Intervals For Assessing P-Value Variability In Prospective Replication Studies, Olga A. Vsevolozhskaya, Gabriel Ruiz, Dmitri Zaykin Dec 2017

Bayesian Prediction Intervals For Assessing P-Value Variability In Prospective Replication Studies, Olga A. Vsevolozhskaya, Gabriel Ruiz, Dmitri Zaykin

Biostatistics Faculty Publications

Increased availability of data and accessibility of computational tools in recent years have created an unprecedented upsurge of scientific studies driven by statistical analysis. Limitations inherent to statistics impose constraints on the reliability of conclusions drawn from data, so misuse of statistical methods is a growing concern. Hypothesis and significance testing, and the accompanying P-values are being scrutinized as representing the most widely applied and abused practices. One line of critique is that P-values are inherently unfit to fulfill their ostensible role as measures of credibility for scientific hypotheses. It has also been suggested that while P-values …
