Connected And Automated Vehicle Technology: Business And Regulatory Issues, University Of Michigan Law School
Event Materials
A program for December 2017 Problem Solving Initiative at the University of Michigan Law School on the topic of automated vehicle technology.
Implementing “Level 3” automation (i.e., the driving mode in which an automated driving system performs the driving task until the human driver is asked to take over) is a significant legal/regulatory, technological, and business challenge. Many issues are presented: How do we assess the costs and benefits of Level 3 automation? How does one address the car to human driver “handoff?” What type of licensing and training of the human driver should be required? What will prevent the …

The Relevance And Resiliency Of The Humanities, Stephen C. Behrendt
The Relevance And Resiliency Of The Humanities, Stephen C. Behrendt
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Discussion has grown increasingly urgent among those involved in the humanities; threats to funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts are only the most highly visible indicators of what many call a “war on the humanities.” The issue is a familiar one. With everyone’s finances under increasing stress, there is mounting pressure to “cut back on nonessentials,” and among both educational institutions and the broader public community, the humanities seem easy targets for the cutters and the pruners. There’s a general sense that the humanities are not very useful when it comes …

The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) began observations in 2014 July. It pursues three core programs: the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2), Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA), and the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS). As well as its core program, eBOSS contains two major subprograms: the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) and the SPectroscopic IDentification of ERosita Sources (SPIDERS). This paper describes the first data release from SDSS-IV, Data Release 13 (DR13). DR13 makes publicly available the first 1390 spatially resolved integral field unit observations of nearby galaxies from MaNGA. It …

Repeat-associated non-AUG (RAN) translation allows for unconventional initiation at disease-causing repeat expansions. As RAN translation contributes to pathogenesis in multiple neurodegenerative disorders, determining its mechanistic underpinnings may inform therapeutic development. Here we analyze RAN translation at G4C2 repeat expansions that cause C9orf72-associated amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia (C9RAN) and at CGG repeats that cause fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome. We find that C9RAN translation initiates through a cap- and eIF4A-dependent mechanism that utilizes a CUG start codon. C9RAN and CGG RAN are both selectively enhanced by integrated stress response (ISR) activation. ISR-enhanced RAN translation requires an …

Immigration-Related Identity Markers And Well-Being In Academia: Perceptions Of Conflict At Work And Life Satisfaction Among Foreign-Born Professors In The United States, Elena Gheorghiu
Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations
Although immigrant professionals contribute significantly to the American economy, their processes of adaptation to the host country and integration into work departments has not been sufficiently examined. Based on a survey of 241 immigrant professors in the United States, the current study sought to reveal how immigration-related identity markers, that is acculturation strategy adopted and migrant personality, impact the levels of private life satisfaction, work satisfaction, and perceptions of conflict at work. Results of Ordinary Least Squares regression analyses revealed that maintaining a balance between original cultural values and local ones, as well as scoring towards the lower-end of the …

How Do Slums Change The Relationship Between Urbanization And The Carbon Intensity Of Well-Being?, Julius Mcgee, Christina Ergas, Patrick Trent Greiner, Matthew Thomas Clement
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study examines how the relationship between urbanization (measured as the percentage of total population living in urban areas) and the carbon intensity of well-being (CIWB) (measured as a ratio of carbon dioxide emissions and life expectancy) in most nations from 1960±2013 varies based on the economic context and whereabouts of a substantial portion of a nation's urban population. To accomplish this, we use the United Nations' (UN) definition of slum households to identify developing countries that have substantial slum populations, and estimate a Prais-Winsten regression model with panel-corrected standard errors (PCSE), allowing for disturbances that are heteroskedastic and contemporaneously …

Microstructural Behavior And Multiscale Structure-Property Relations For Cyclic Loading Of Metallic Alloys Procured From Additive Manufacturing (Laser Engineered Net Shaping -- Lens), Mohammad Ali Bagheri
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this study is to investigate the microstructure and microstructure-based fatigue (MSF) model of additively-manufactured (AM) metallic materials. Several challenges associated with different metals produced through additive manufacturing (Laser Enhanced Net Shaping – LENS®) have been addressed experimentally and numerically. Significant research efforts are focused on optimizing the process parameters for AM manufacturing; however, achieving a homogenous, defectree AM product immediately after its fabrication without postabrication processing has not been fully established yet. Thus, in order to adopt AM materials for applications, a thorough understanding of the impact of AM process parameters on the mechanical behavior of AM …

Viruses with spindle or lemon-shaped virions are rare in the world of viruses, but are common in viruses of archaeal extremophiles, possibly due to the extreme conditions in which they thrive. However, the structural and genetic basis for the unique spindle shape is unknown. The best-studied spindle-shaped virus, Sulfolobus Spindle-shaped Virus 1 (SSV1), is composed mostly of the major capsid protein VP1. Similar to many other viruses, proteolytic cleavage of VP1 is thought to be critical for virion formation. Unlike half of the genes in SSV1, including the minor capsid protein gene VP3, the VP1 gene does not tolerate …

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship
The single-photon, photoelectron-photoion coincidence spectrum of N2 has been recorded at high (~1.5 cm–1 ) resolution in the region between the N2+ X 2Σg+, v+ = 0 and 1 ionization thresholds by using a double-imaging spectrometer and intense vacuum-ultraviolet light from the Synchrotron SOLEIL. This approach provides the relative photoionization cross section, the photoelectron energy distribution, and the photoelectron angular distribution as a function of photon energy. The region of interest contains autoionizing valence states, vibrationally autoionizing Rydberg states converging to vibrationally excited levels of the N2+ X 2 …
An Investigative Study Toward The Development Of A Crosslinked Porcine Xenograft Meniscus Total Replacement, Patrick Ehren Barton
An Investigative Study Toward The Development Of A Crosslinked Porcine Xenograft Meniscus Total Replacement, Patrick Ehren Barton
Theses and Dissertations
Meniscus damage is very common and eventually leads to the deterioration of the entire knee joint. The goal of this study was to provide evidence that supports a proof of concept for a decellularized porcine meniscal xenograft to be used as a treatment method for meniscal injury as a partial or full meniscus transplant. This research adapted an antigen removal protocol for articular cartilage to produce decellularized xenografts in 48% of the time and with no significant difference in DNA content as other current methods. DNA and GAG content, and the compression moduli were significantly lower in the xenograft than …

Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class
This device will measure the torsional stiffness of a FSAE race car frame. Our design will apply a torsional load to the frame while simultaneously providing precise measurements required to calculate the applied load, displacement, angular deflection, and torsional stiffness. Unlike the most popular method of testing torsional stiffness by applying load with a lever, our device twists the frame using hydraulic bottle jacks with an integrated pressure gauge. This aspect enables precise control of the twist, and the pressure gauges provide the capability of load-measurement. The validity of measurements will be assessed by comparing results to theoretical calculations.
