Nude Home Teacher, Zachary Grant Bess Dec 2017

Nude Home Teacher, Zachary Grant Bess

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

Sierra “So there was this girl in my ward, Mariah, who I knew was an art student, so we decided to take ‘Drawing 2’ Together. So we’re taking Drawing 2 Together, they use nude models, it’s like whatever. Like the first couple times it’s weird and then it’s not weird anymore. So we get this email before class, from Ray, the Drawing professor and he’s like ‘Hey guys, just want to let you know…” cause we’ve used professional models up to this point. [Interjecting into his email quote] “…we’re having a student model come in today, so please be really …

The Bunad, Devan Reische Dec 2017

The Bunad, Devan Reische

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

The bunad came from my grandma. She gave it to me. The bunad has sort of a sorted history, so here’s the thing. If you look at that picture, that bunad was, that was Anna’s bunad, grandma’s bunad, you can take a picture of that picture, grandma had a less elaborate bunad. She didn’t have one that was from Norway. I mean look at that you can’t make those here okay you order and. Hers was just the black front with the white under it. The bunad that I use wasn’t Nora’s bunad it was Anna’s bunad. Anna was very …

Reversible Cooling-Induced Deactivations To Study Cortical Contributions To Obstacle Memory In The Walking Cat, Carmen Wong, Stephen G. Lomber Dec 2017

Reversible Cooling-Induced Deactivations To Study Cortical Contributions To Obstacle Memory In The Walking Cat, Carmen Wong, Stephen G. Lomber

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

On complex, naturalistic terrain, sensory information about an environmental obstacle can be used to rapidly adjust locomotor movements for avoidance. For example, in the cat, visual information about an impending obstacle can modulate stepping for avoidance. Locomotor adaptation can also occur independent of vision, as sudden tactile inputs to the leg by an expected obstacle can modify the stepping of all four legs for avoidance. Such complex locomotor coordination involves supraspinal structures, such as the parietal cortex. This protocol describes the use of reversible, cooling-induced cortical deactivation to assess parietal cortex contributions to memory-guided obstacle locomotion in the cat. Small …

In this session, we’ll explain these issues and suggest best practices for sharing articles and chapters with your students.

Synergistic Interactions Of H2 And N2 With Molten Gallium In The Presence Of Plasma, Maria L. Carreon, Daniel F. Jaramillo-Cabanzo, Indira Chaudhuri, Madhu Menon, Mahendra K. Sunkara Dec 2017

Synergistic Interactions Of H2 And N2 With Molten Gallium In The Presence Of Plasma, Maria L. Carreon, Daniel F. Jaramillo-Cabanzo, Indira Chaudhuri, Madhu Menon, Mahendra K. Sunkara

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The present study examines the interaction of hydrogen and nitrogen plasmas with gallium in an effort to gain insights into the mechanisms behind the synergetic effect of plasma and a catalytic metal. Absorption/desorption experiments were performed, accompanied by theoretical-computational calculations. Experiments were carried out in a plasma-enhanced, Ga-packed, batch reactor and entailed monitoring the change in pressure at different temperatures. The results indicated a rapid adsorption/dissolution of the gas into the molten metal when gallium was exposed to plasma, even at a low temperature of 100 °C. The experimental observations, when hydrogen was used, indicate that gallium acts as a …

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

When it comes to health care, the most important question facing the American people is this: Is the pain reliever you need to get rid of the headache caused by your employer's open enrollment covered under medical insurance or do you have to spend thousands of dollars in deductibles before you can write off a bottle of aspirin?

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

In both agricultural and natural systems, researchers have demonstrated large effects of plant-soil feedback (PSF) on plant growth. However, the concepts and approaches used in these two types of systems have developed, for the most part, independently. Here, we present a conceptual framework that integrates knowledge and approaches from these two contrasting systems. We use this integrated framework to demonstrate how (1) knowledge from complex natural systems can be used to increase agricultural resource-use efficiency and productivity and (2) research in agricultural systems can be used to test hypotheses and approaches developed in natural systems. Using this framework, we discuss …

Antibiotic Resistance In Escherichia Coli Iron Transport Mutants, Madeline Brandt Dec 2017

Antibiotic Resistance In Escherichia Coli Iron Transport Mutants, Madeline Brandt

Honors Projects

Studies previously completed on Escherichia coli mutants suggested the possibility of iron uptake as an influence on the antibiotic resistance seen in different strains. The research focused on the TonB energy transduction system and its contributions to efflux-mediated antibiotic resistance. To test the hypothesis that iron uptake has an influence on antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli, the sensitivity to a variety of antibiotics was evaluated in strains of E. coli lacking genes that relate to the uptake of iron or the efflux system that is necessary for the uptake of iron. To test the efflux systems TolC and TonB …

Communicative Solutions To The United States' Political Polarization, Codey Albers

Honors Projects

In 2016, political polarization in the United States reached levels unprecedented in the last three decades. This paper analyzes over thirty sources in an attempt to explore the extent to which the political divide exists in the US, to discover some possible reasons for the severe polarization, and to offer a list of possible solutions to the problem, solutions that everyday citizens can enact to contribute to a more open, discursive, and respectful society where all views can be heard, respected, and where democracy can thrive. Using a critical communication approach, this paper explains complex communication theory using language accessible …

Publications and Research

Floating oil, plastics, and marine organisms are continually redistributed by ocean surface currents. Prediction of their resulting distribution on the surface is a fundamental, long-standing, and practically important problem. The dominant paradigm is dispersion within the dynamical context of a nondivergent flow: objects initially close together will on average spread apart but the area of surface patches of material does not change. Although this paradigm is likely valid at mesoscales, larger than 100 km in horizontal scale, recent theoretical studies of submesoscales (less than ∼10 km) predict strong surface convergences and downwelling associated with horizontal density fronts and cyclonic vortices. …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present our study on the spatially resolved Hα and M* relation for 536 star-forming and 424 quiescent galaxies taken from the MaNGA survey. We show that the star formation rate surface density (ΣSFR), derived based on the Hα emissions, is strongly correlated with the M* surface density (Σ*) on kiloparsec scales for star-forming galaxies and can be directly connected to the global star-forming sequence. This suggests that the global main sequence may be a consequence of a more fundamental relation on small scales. On the other hand, our result suggests that …

Using Focus Groups For Assessment, Evaluation, And Improvement, Yuerong Sweetland Dec 2017

Using Focus Groups For Assessment, Evaluation, And Improvement, Yuerong Sweetland

The International Institute for Innovative Instruction Blog

A focus group, as Krueger (2015) defined, is “a carefully planned series of discussions designed to obtain perceptions on a defined area of interest in a permissive, non-threatening environment.” A focus group approach, as a qualitative method, can provide rich information on perceptions, feelings, and reactions through participant interactions resembling the dynamics of real life in a comfortable environment. In particular, it can be used to uncover mysteries behind vague or unexpected responses by probing into the “how” or “why” of participant behavior and thinking.
