How Master Teachers Conceptualize Student Engagement: A Comparison Of Theoretical And Practitioner Perspectives, Andrew D. Baker
How Master Teachers Conceptualize Student Engagement: A Comparison Of Theoretical And Practitioner Perspectives, Andrew D. Baker
Theses and Dissertations
Over the past twenty years, an increasing amount of research has been devoted to the study of student engagement within the field of educational psychology. This led to a growing body of research touting the benefits of engaged learning—from increased student achievement to more positive school experiences for learners. However, the literature is characterized by competing theoretical frameworks and multiple definitions of the construct of student engagement. Additionally, few works seek to capitalized on the expertise of classroom teachers to hone and develop what is known about engagement from the theoretical perspective.
The current study used qualitative methodology to observe …
Person-Centered Treatment To Optimize Psychiatric Medication Adherence, Natalie Bareis
Person-Centered Treatment To Optimize Psychiatric Medication Adherence, Natalie Bareis
Theses and Dissertations
Objectives: Adherence to psychotropic medication is poor among individuals with bipolar disorder (BD). To understand treatment experiences and associated adherence among these individuals, we developed a novel construct of Clinical Net Benefit (CNB) using psychiatric symptoms, adverse effects and overall functioning assessments. We tested whether adherence differed across classes of CNB, whether individuals transitioned between classes over time, and whether these transitions were differentially associated with adherence.
Methods: Data come from individuals aged 18+ during five years of the Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder (STEP-BD). Latent class analysis identified groups of CNB. Latent transition analysis determined probabilities of …
To Help Or Not To Help? Assessing The Impact Of Envy And Gratitude On Prosocial Behaviors, Anna Maria C. Behler
To Help Or Not To Help? Assessing The Impact Of Envy And Gratitude On Prosocial Behaviors, Anna Maria C. Behler
Theses and Dissertations
Envy is an other-oriented but negative emotion; no research has examined the influence of envy on prosocial behavior. Study 1 examined whether envy and gratitude would promote or inhibit prosocial behavior. I hypothesized that envy would result in less helping behavior than a neutral condition, whereas gratitude would increase helping behavior. Results supported the hypothesis that envy inhibits prosocial behavior. There was not enough evidence to suggest that gratitude promoted helping.
Study 2 examined how envy and gratitude affected prosocial behavior when participants were given the choice to help or harm others. I hypothesized that experiencing envy would result in …
Building A Bond: Longitudinal Relations Between Interpersonal School Climate, Student Awareness And Reporting Of Violence, And Peer Victimization And Aggression In Adolescents, Kathryn Behrhorst
Theses and Dissertations
High prevalence rates and negative outcomes of peer-based aggression and victimization during early adolescence underscore the need to identify causes and consequences of these outcomes. Limited research has examined the impact of environmental and contextual factors, such as school climate, on peer aggression and victimization. Few studies have addressed relations between school climate and specific subtypes of physical and relational aggression and victimization. Although school climate has been assessed via interpersonal subsystems (i.e., student-student and student-teacher relationships), little research has incorporated the role of student awareness and reporting of violence and safety concerns. Further, studies are needed that consider the …

Good As We Know It: Goodness In Design Discourse Since 1870, Garreth C. Blackwell
Good As We Know It: Goodness In Design Discourse Since 1870, Garreth C. Blackwell
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the ways in which design and design practitioners have defined value in the design discourse through the vocabulary and concept of goodness since 1870. These definitions of value have been central to design discourse both past and present and deal with the impact and purpose of design work as well as its role in the creation of the approaching future. Since before the coalescence of graphic design as a separate field of design, these questions have been tied to the form, function or social impact of the objects created by designers. Despite the prevalence of this line …

Conclusions: The scope of treatment …
Tumor-Intrinsic Inflammatory Pathways Associated With Tumor Dormancy And Recurrence, Savannah E. Butler
Tumor-Intrinsic Inflammatory Pathways Associated With Tumor Dormancy And Recurrence, Savannah E. Butler
Theses and Dissertations
The successful treatment of breast cancer is limited due to a fraction of tumor cells escaping drug-treatment by entering a dormant state, only to relapse years or decades later at distant sites. Host-driven chronic inflammatory cells such as M2 macrophages play an important role in tumorigenesis, but the role of tumor-intrinsic inflammatory signaling involved in tumor dormancy and recurrence is unknown. We sought to determine the role of tumor-intrinsic inflammatory pathways in mouse mammary carcinoma cells (MMC) treated with Adriamycin (ADR), a clinically relevant chemotherapeutic drug. We found that ADR-induced dormant tumor cells autonomously produced pro-inflammatory cytokines, in vitro. …
Inhibition Of Oxidative And Conjugative Metabolism Of Buprenorphine Using Generally Recognized As Safe (Gras) Compounds Or Components Of Dietary Supplements, Neha V. Maharao
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation aimed at developing an inhibitor strategy to improve the oral bioavailability (Foral) and systemic exposure (AUC∞) of buprenorphine (BUP) as well as reduce the variability associated with them. Twenty-seven generally recognized as safe (GRAS) compounds or dietary substances were evaluated for their potential to inhibit the oxidative and conjugative metabolism of BUP, using pooled human intestinal and liver microsomes. In both the organs, oxidation appeared to be the major metabolic pathway with a 6 fold (intestine) and 4 fold (liver) higher intrinsic clearance than glucuronidation. Buprenorphine was predicted to show low and variable F …
The Prevalence, Predictive Factors, And Classification Of Intrapulpal Cracks In Maxillary Molars Requiring Endodontic Treatment, Husain Karashi
The Prevalence, Predictive Factors, And Classification Of Intrapulpal Cracks In Maxillary Molars Requiring Endodontic Treatment, Husain Karashi
Theses and Dissertations
Diagnosis and treatment of teeth with longitudinal fractures is challenging. Cracks are usually not visible radiographically; they require a thorough evaluation to aid in diagnosis. Patients may be asymptomatic, demanding the dentist rely on clinical findings to make a diagnosis. Early diagnosis of the presence and extent of a crack is essential for the successful management of a cracked tooth. There is limited information in the literature regarding the prevalence or predictive factors of cracks extending into the pulp chamber of teeth. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of intrapulpal cracks in maxillary molars and to …
The Impact Of Perceived Mental Illness Stigma On Caregivers’ Desire To Relinquish Care, Tyler R. Corson
The Impact Of Perceived Mental Illness Stigma On Caregivers’ Desire To Relinquish Care, Tyler R. Corson
Theses and Dissertations
Caregiving can be stressful, and older adults’ health and well-being may be impacted by the roles and responsibilities they assume as caregivers for persons with serious mental illness (SMI). This study is the first to apply the Stress Process Model of Caregiving (SPM) in an attempt to understand how mental illness stigma influences caregiver outcomes, specifically their desire to relinquish care. The intent of this study was to call attention to care relinquishment as an under-studied stress process outcome and to explore stress factors, with a focus on mental illness stigma, that contribute to SMI caregivers’ desire to relinquish care. …

Testing The Ability Of Two Series Of Models To Predict High School Graduation Status, David T. Marshall
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to create and test two series of predictive models aimed at projecting high school graduation status. Secondary data were obtained in partnership with an urban school district. All of the predictor variables included in the models tested in this study were academic and nonacademic variables that were found to be significant predictors of high school graduation in previous empirical work. In the first series of models tested, individual academic and nonacademic variables were tested together along with school-level variables. Eighth and ninth grade variables were tested separately to avoid multicollinearity issues. The second series …

Finding Voice, The Body Speaks: Original Work And Counter-Hegemonic Performance And Practice, Matthew Paul Thornton
Finding Voice, The Body Speaks: Original Work And Counter-Hegemonic Performance And Practice, Matthew Paul Thornton
Theses and Dissertations
Graduate study in theatre has allowed me to understand my work as an artist and educator from a critical academic perspective. I have researched Butoh as a model for original work that employs multiculturalism against hegemonic control of personal identity. From my own training experience, I am recognizing Capoeira, Contact Improvisation, and Devising processes (co-creation or collaborative creative process in dance) as counter-hegemonic forms and techniques that share a physical/philosophical emphasis on communal engagement, improvisation, circularity and repetition. Looking at them together provides points of intersection for me to examine them as an artist, while posing questions for cross-cultural investigations. …
Three Dimensional Homology Modeling Of Organic Cation Transporter 3 To Identify Structural Elements Mediating Transporter-Substrate Interactions, Hebing Liu
Theses and Dissertations
Organic cation transporters (OCTs) play a pivotal role in the absorption, tissue distribution, and excretion of a diverse array of substances, and currently the nature of the biochemical interactions between substrate and OCTs are unknown. Therefore, identifying which amino acid residues are critical for OCT-substrate interactions is of central importance to understanding and predicting interactions between drugs and OCTs. A three-dimensional (3-D) homology model of human OCT3 was generated using the crystal structure of a high affinity phosphate transporter from Piriformospora indica (PiPT) as template, and putative binding pocket for the prototypical hOCT3 ligand 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+) was identified …
The Role Of The Nucleosome Remodeling Factor Nurf In Inhibiting T And Natural Killer Cell Mediated Antitumor Immunity By Suppressing Tumor Antigenicity And Natural Cytotoxicity Receptor Co-Ligands, Kimberly Mayes
Theses and Dissertations
Tumor immunoediting is a dynamic process in which the immune response attacks tumor cells by detecting danger signals and tumor antigens. In order to survive, tumor cells develop mechanisms to avoid detection or destruction by the immune system. To counteract this, several strategies are being developed to enhance the antitumor immune response, including the depletion of immunosuppressive cells, enhancing the activation of antitumor immune cells and increasing tumor cell immunogenicity. These therapies have seen limited success individually, however, and it is likely that combination therapy with novel targets will be necessary to see reproducible beneficial responses. Epigenetic modifications are attractive …

Participants were 101 5th graders of diverse backgrounds who completed computer-based questionnaires about their friendships, ethnic-racial identity, and academic engagement. Teachers reported on closeness and conflict in the student-teacher relationship. Relationships in the expected direction were evident between the public regard and centrality dimensions of ethnic-racial identity and social relationships as well as with academic outcomes. Further, path analyses revealed that the relationship between the public regard and cognitive engagement was mediated by student-teacher closeness. Gender …
Design, Synthesis, And Biological Screening Of Selective Mu Opioid Receptor Ligands As Potential Treatments For Opioid Addiction, Samuel Obeng
Theses and Dissertations
Today, more Americans die each year because of drug overdoses than are killed in motor vehicle accidents. In fact, in 2015, more than 33,000 individuals died due to an overdose of heroin or prescription opioids. Sadly, 40-60 % of patients on current opioid addiction treatment medications relapse. Studies have shown that the addiction/abuse liability of opioids are abolished in mu opioid receptor (MOR) knock-out mice; this indicates that the addiction and abuse liability of opioids are mainly mediated through MOR. Utilizing the “message-address concept”, the our laboratory reported a novel non-peptide, reversible MOR selective ligand 17-cyclopropylmethyl-3,14β-dihydroxy-4,5α-epoxy-6α (isoquinoline-3-carboxamido)morphinan (NAQ). Molecular modeling …

A Dialogue Of Learning: The Exploration Of A Service-Learning Practicum And The Development Of Democratic Educational Values, Margaret P. Pienkowski
Theses and Dissertations
Using a hybrid portraiture interpretivist case study methodology, this study explores the development of democratic educational values of pre-service teachers who participated in a “nested” service-learning practicum during their first semester in a secondary teacher preparation program. In this nested model, both the pre-service teachers and the middle school students with whom they worked participated in service-learning. The study is in response to the findings of previous researchers that democratic educational values have, in many classrooms, been pushed aside by the pressures of the standardization and accountability movement and by the belief that democratic educational values are critical to a …

Alpha6 Beta2 Subunit Containing Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Contributions To Abuse-Related Effects Of Nicotine And Alcohol, Alexandra M. Stafford
Alpha6 Beta2 Subunit Containing Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Contributions To Abuse-Related Effects Of Nicotine And Alcohol, Alexandra M. Stafford
Theses and Dissertations
Pharmacotherapies for tobacco and alcohol cessation are only modestly successful, so it is important to better understand mechanisms underlying their use and abuse. The overarching goal of this research is to assess a6b2 subunit containing nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (a6b2*nAChR; *denotes possible assembly with other subunits) contributions to abuse-related effects of nicotine and alcohol. In the absence of a6b2*nAChR-selective agonists, a6b2*nAChR gain-of-function (a6L9’S) mice provide a tool for selective activation of a6b2*nAChRs. Using the a6L9’S mice together with nicotine doses sub-threshold for stimulation of native nAChRs, these studies tested the hypothesis that activation of a6b2*nAChRs is sufficient to promote neurochemical and …
Separation Of Transition And Heavy Metals Using Stationary Phase Gradients And Chelation Thin Layer Chromatography / Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Pogil-Pcl Workshops, Stacy L. Stegall
Theses and Dissertations
Gradient surfaces exhibit a variation in functionality along the length of the surface. One method for preparing gradients is controlled-rate infusion (CRI). In Part 1 of this work, CRI was used to prepare gradients for the purpose of separating transition and heavy metals. Initial work on this project was focused on controlling the retention of the metal ions by varying the number of amine groups, aminoalkoxysilane concentration, and the infusion time. The retention factors of four metal ions varied predictably with increasing number of amine groups, increasing aminoalkoxysilane concentration, and increasing infusion time, producing small but useful changes in the …
