Are Primary Schools Incorporating Enough Movement Into The Day To Maintain Positive Mental Health In Children?, Jennifer Schmidt Jul 2017

Are Primary Schools Incorporating Enough Movement Into The Day To Maintain Positive Mental Health In Children?, Jennifer Schmidt

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Schools have endured a shift in regards to academic rigor and the amount of time spent in physical activity. In order to be a top academically performing nation, America has made academic rigor a priority. In order to accommodate the amount of content and rigor, cuts have typically been made to the amount of time spent in recess, physical education and health education classes. Another trend in America is the prevalence of mental health issues in children. When considering the cuts being made in education it is critical to acknowledge the repercussions they may have on mental health. This capstone …

Data sources were participant observations, youth‟s interviews and TCs‟ pre- and final reflections, rapport- building analyses, a focus group, and lesson plans. We found TCs incorporated the youth‟s funds to …

Predictive Value Of Adhd Symptomatology On Motives And Outcomes Of Stimulant Misuse, Alexander Laszlo Peterkin Jul 2017

Predictive Value Of Adhd Symptomatology On Motives And Outcomes Of Stimulant Misuse, Alexander Laszlo Peterkin

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

ADHD stimulant misuse is defined as taking a stimulant used to treat ADHD either without having a prescription for that stimulant or in a manner that deviates from the prescription’s instructions. This has been a growing trend among undergraduate students over recent years. Prior research has found that misusers are likely to have severe symptoms of ADHD, misuse for primarily academic reasons, and display problems associated with substance abuse. The current study aimed to determine the predictive value of ADHD symptomatology on frequency of ADHD stimulant misuse, mediated by academic motives for misuse and substance abuse problems. The survey for …

Hip Mechanics Of Unilateral Drop Landings, Bobbie S. Irmischer Jul 2017

Hip Mechanics Of Unilateral Drop Landings, Bobbie S. Irmischer

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

Increased hip forces are a proposed factor for osteoarthritis and femoroacetabular impingement. These forces can be estimated through musculoskeletal modeling using measured kinematics and kinetics. An understanding of hip joint loading during landing in a asymptomatic population will begin to elucidate what, if any, sex differences exist and how changes in landing condition alter hip mechanics. The overall purpose of this dissertation was to explore how sex and landing condition effect landing mechanics. Landing mechanics were quantified using ground reaction forces (GRF), hip joint forces (HJF), and lower extremity kinematics during unilateral drop landings from 30-cm, 40-cm, and 50-cm, as …

Germ-Line Gene Editing And Congressional Reaction In Context: Learning From Almost 50 Years Of Congressional Reactions To Biomedical Breakthroughs, Russell A. Spivak, J.D., I. Glenn Cohen, J.D., Eli Y. Adashi, M.D., M.S.

Journal of Law and Health

On December 18, 2015, President Obama signed into law a policy rider forestalling the therapeutic modification of the human germ line. The rider, motivated by the science’s potential unethical ends, is only the most recent instance in which the legislature cut short the ongoing national conversation on the acceptability of a developing science. This essay offers historical perspective on what bills were proposed and passed surrounding four other then-developing scientific breakthroughs—Recombinant DNA, in vitro fertilization, Cloning, Stem Cells—to better analyze how Congress is, and should, regulate this exciting and promising science.

The Implications Of Eco-Evolutionary Processes For The Emergence Of Marine Plankton Community Biogeography, Boris Sauterey, Ben Ward, Jonathan Rault, Chris Bowler, David Claessen

Entomology Faculty Publications

Models of community assembly have been used to illustrate how the many functionally diverse species that compose plankton food webs can coexist. However, the evolutionary processes leading to the emergence of plankton food webs and their interplay with migratory processes and spatial heterogeneity are yet to be explored. We study the eco-evolutionary dynamics of a modeled plankton community structured in both size and space and physiologically constrained by empirical data. We demonstrate that a complex yet ecologically and evolutionarily stable size-structured food web can emerge from an initial set of two monomorphic phytoplankton and zooplankton populations. We also show that …

Scientists are sequencing new genomes at an increasing rate with the goal of associating genome contents with phenotypic traits. After a new genome is sequenced and assembled, structural gene annotation is often the first step in analysis. Despite advances in computational gene prediction algorithms, most eukaryotic genomes still benefit from manual gene annotation. Undergraduates can become skilled annotators, and in the process learn both about genes/genomes and about how to utilize large datasets. Data visualizations provided by a genome browser are essential for manual gene annotation, enabling annotators to quickly evaluate multiple lines of evidence (e.g., sequence similarity, RNA-Seq, gene …

The Tension-Sensitive Ion Transport Activity Of Msl8 Is Critical For Its Function In Pollen Hydration And Germination, Eric S. Hamilton Jul 2017

The Tension-Sensitive Ion Transport Activity Of Msl8 Is Critical For Its Function In Pollen Hydration And Germination, Eric S. Hamilton

Biology Faculty Research

All cells respond to osmotic challenges, including those imposed during normal growth and development. Mechanosensitive (MS) ion channels provide a conserved mechanism for regulating osmotic forces by conducting ions in response to increased membrane tension. We previously demonstrated that the MS ion channel MscS-Like 8 (MSL8) is required for pollen to survive multiple osmotic challenges that occur during the normal process of fertilization, and that it can inhibit pollen germination. However, it remained unclear whether these physiological functions required ion flux through a mechanically gated channel provided by MSL8. We introduced two point mutations into the predicted pore-lining domain of …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Background: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness in the United States among adults age 60 and older. While oxidative stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of AMD, dietary antioxidants have been shown to delay AMD progression in clinical studies. We hypothesized that N-acetylcysteine amide (NACA), a thiol antioxidant, would protect retinal pigment epithelium and impede progression of retinal degeneration.

Methods: tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) was used to induce oxidative stress in cell cultures. The goal was to evaluate the efficacy of NACA in an in vitro model of AMD in primary human retinal pigment epithelial cells …

Two Essays On Forced Ceo Turnover During Envy Merger Waves, And Dividends, Bader Almuhtadi

Finance Theses & Dissertations

Scholars have provided different theories that aim to explain merger waves throughout the years. However, a recent stream of the finance literature addresses the behavioral aspect behind mergers waves and imply that envy motivated CEOs tend to create merger waves. On the other hand, the decision to oust a CEO is considered one of the most important corporate decisions made in the lifetime of corporations. In Essay 1, we participate into the study stream by focusing on whether the incident of forced CEO turnover is higher during the late stages of merger waves where envy turns out to be more …

Race, The Condition Of Neo-Liberalism, Vikash Singh Jul 2017

Race, The Condition Of Neo-Liberalism, Vikash Singh

Department of Sociology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This article addresses the social and historical relation between Chicago School neo-liberalism and contemporary racism, and its connections with the formations of racism in classical liberalism and its colonial character. I show the pragmatic and discursive operations of neo-racism in the context of this shift to a neo-liberal discourse, drawing particularly on Michel Foucault’s seminars, Society Must be Defended, and Birth of Bio-politics. Insofar as “race” cannot be understood as a discrete category outside its social, economic, moral, and political embeddedness in liberalism, I argue that methodological individualism and expectations of high-specialization constrain the theorization of race in U.S. scholarship. …

Trigger Warnings: From Panic To Data, Francesca Laguardia, Venezia Michalsen Jul 2017

Trigger Warnings: From Panic To Data, Francesca Laguardia, Venezia Michalsen

Department of Justice Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Following a practice originated online, university faculty and staff have increasingly used “trigger warnings” to alert students to the possibility that they might be affected or even harmed by potentially traumatic material. This practice has led to a passionate debate about whether such warnings stifle or encourage student expression and academic freedom, and whether they are beneficial or detrimental to learning. In this article, we illustrate the history and current state of this debate, and examine the scientific support for the arguments for and against the use of such warnings. Specifically, we question the scientific basis for the suggestion that …

Caring, Killing, Euphemism And George Orwell: How Language Choice Undercuts Our Mission, David Johns, Dominick A. Dellasala Jul 2017

Caring, Killing, Euphemism And George Orwell: How Language Choice Undercuts Our Mission, David Johns, Dominick A. Dellasala

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

What does George Orwell have to do with Conservation Biology? As one of the foremost critics of how language is used, he has quite a lot to say. He was not just a critic of the imprecise or the dreary, but of the power of language to mislead; he understood the power of language to evoke the passion of a mission-value-morality driven discipline such as conservation biology, or drown it in what he called orthodoxy—a condition that “seems to demand a lifeless, imitative style” (Orwell, 1968: IV: 135). Too often, he noted, speech about values was “the defense of the …

Specifically, what kinds of activities and mindsets comprise different design methods, and which ones do design teams believe drive sustainability, innovation, and other value? How could they be combined to improve sustainable design’s value to companies? This study was the first to deconstruct green product design practices into their constituent activities and mindsets to characterize them and hypothesize their potential synergies. It was also the first to empirically test and compare what practitioners value within three of these sustainable design practices—The Natural Step, Whole System Mapping, and Biomimicry. Others have …

Can Big Whales Inspire Big Behaviors? A Study Of Environmental Communication, And Nature Immersion, Theresa Soley Jul 2017

Can Big Whales Inspire Big Behaviors? A Study Of Environmental Communication, And Nature Immersion, Theresa Soley

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Direct contact with wild nature is becoming harder for people to access in present times, yet research suggests that experiencing nature is important to the formation of environmental values, which may lead to conservation behaviors. My thesis experiment theorizes that direct contact with nature has the ability to impact people's behavioral beliefs and intentions toward the environment, applying Icek Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the New Ecological Paradigm Scale as measures. A questionnaire was administered post-whale watching trips in Juneau, Alaska to determine whether whales, direct experience with charismatic megafauna, could stimulate positive attitudes and behaviors toward recycling. …

An Analysis Of Testing Variables In Rapid Compression Machine Experiments, Jenna Ezzell Jul 2017

An Analysis Of Testing Variables In Rapid Compression Machine Experiments, Jenna Ezzell

Master's Theses (2009 -)

There have been discrepancies noted with regards to experimental data from rapid compression machines (RCM). When data is compared from different RCM facilities, the ignition delay times are inconsistent when inspecting any particular temperature. Currently in publications, if these datasets are compared, the discrepancy is said to be due to heat loss, however this issue has yet to be examined more thoroughly. To determine what the root cause of this discrepancy is, four different fake RCM facilities were created and simulated. There were also different sets of initial conditions used to determine how this may affect the data. They were …
