Reply To Marques Et Al. (2017): How To Best Handle Potential Detectability Bias, Richard L. Hutto

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Marques et al. (2017) write in response to a communications paper in which I (Hutto 2016) question whether a model-based approach is the only way to deal with the detectability problem inherent in bird survey work. The model-based approach to dealing with potential detectability bias is widely viewed as the operational gold standard, and I welcome the comments from experts in this field. The authors did uncover some errors on my part, which I address below, but they also misrepresented my most important points, so I am glad to have the opportunity to respond here. [1st paragraph]

Consumer Knowledge, Perception And Attitudes Of Unlabeled Genetically Modified Foods Of An Educated Population In The State Of Kentucky, Aldious A. Waite

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Genetically modified (GM) foods technology is a novel idea for improving food and crop production, but the supposed health risk of GM foods, such as possible negative long-term health effects to humans, animals and the environment, have provoked the European Union to create assessment protocols to monitor and regulate the safety of GM foods and crops. This research investigates the perception and attitudes of unlabeled GM foods of the WKU faculty and staff. A survey was administered via WKU Qualtrics, and chi-square tests were performed to see how the benefits and disadvantages of GM foods may affect the purchasing decisions …

In-Stream Habitat Predicts Salamander Occupancy And Abundance Better Than Landscape-Scale Factors Within Exurban Watersheds In A Global Diversity Hotspot, Nathaniel Weaver, Kyle Barrett

Publications

The southern Appalachian Mountains have experienced rapid human population growth rates since the 1980s. Land used practices are shifting from rural to residential. The majority of development has been low density, and is often near biologically diverse areas such as National Forests and National Parks. The long-term effects of urbanization in the southeastern Appalachian Mountains are not clearly understood and even less is known with respect to stream salamander response to urbanization. In order to determine the temporal influence of exurban housing on southern Appalachian streams we sampled 27 first- and second-order streams in watersheds containing exurban developments ranging in …

Graphene-Based ‘Hybrids’ As High-Performance Electrodes With Tailored Interfaces For Alternative Energy Applications: Synthesis, Structure And Electrochemical Properties, Mayme Marie Van Meveren Jul 2017

Graphene-Based ‘Hybrids’ As High-Performance Electrodes With Tailored Interfaces For Alternative Energy Applications: Synthesis, Structure And Electrochemical Properties, Mayme Marie Van Meveren

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Technological progress is determined to a great extent by developments of novel materials from new combinations of known substances with different dimensionality and functionality. We investigate the development of 3D ‘hybrid’ nanomaterials by utilizing graphene based systems coupled with transition metal oxides (e.g. manganese oxides MnO2 and Mn3O4). This lays the groundwork for high performance electrochemical electrodes for alternative energy owing to their higher specific capacitance, wide operational window and stability through charge-discharge cycling, environmental benignity, cost effective, easily processed, and reproducible in a larger scale.

Thus far, very few people have investigated the potential of combining carbon sheets that …

Introduction:Heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation (AF) have been associated with a higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Whether HF and AF are related to AD by enhancing AD neuropathological changes is unknown.

Methods:We applied network analyses and multiple logistic regression models to assess the association between HF and AF with severity of AD neuropathology in patients from the National Alzheimer’s Coordinating Center database with primary neuropathological diagnosis of AD.

Results:We included 1593 patients, of whom 129 had HF and 250 had AF. HF and AF patients were older and had milder AD pathology. In the network …

Too Important To Tamper With: Predation Risk Affects Body Mass And Escape Behaviour But Not Escape Ability, Benjamin T. Walters, Tin Nok Natalie Cheng, Justin Doyle, Chistopher G. Guglielmo, Michael Clinchy, Liana Y. Zanette

Biology Publications

Escaping from a predator is a matter of life or death, and prey are expected to adaptively alter their physiology under chronic predation risk in ways that may affect escape. Theoretical models assume that escape performance is mass dependent, whereby scared prey strategically maintain an optimal body mass to enhance escape. Experiments testing the mass-dependent predation risk hypothesis have demonstrated that prior experience of predation risk can affect body mass, and the behavioural decisions about evasive actions to take. Other studies on natural changes in body mass indicate that mass can affect escape. No single experiment has tested if all …

Praja Is Overexpressed In Glioblastoma And Contributes To Neural Precursor Development, Joshua Shin, Viveka Mishra, Eric Glasgow, Sobia Zaidi, Kazufumi Ohshiro, Lopa Mishra, Shuyun Rao, +Several Additional Authors

Medicine Faculty Publications

PRAJA, a RING-H2 E3 ligase, is abundantly expressed in brain tissues such as the cerebellum and frontal cortex, amongst others, and more specifically in neural progenitor cells as well as in multiple cancers that include glioblastomas. However, the specific role that Praja plays in neural development and gliomas remains unclear. In this investigation, we performed bioinformatic analyses to examine Praja1 and Praja2 expression across 29 cancer types, and observed raised levels of Praja1 and Praja2 in gliomas with an inverse relationship between Praja1 and apoptotic genes and Praja substrates such as Smad3. We analyzed the role of Praja in the …

Computational Biology Institute

Salinity gradients are critical habitat determinants for freshwater organisms. Silverside fishes in the genus Odontesthes have recently and repeatedly transitioned from marine to freshwater habitats, overcoming a strong ecological barrier. Genomic and transcriptomic changes involved in this kind of transition are only known for a few model species. We present new data and analyses of gene expression and microbiome composition in the gills of two closely related silverside species, marine O. argentinensis and freshwater O. bonariensis and find more than three thousand transcripts differentially expressed, with osmoregulatory/ion transport genes and immune genes showing very different expression patterns across species. Interspecific …

Taking Steps To Prevent Falls, Kimberly Okechukwu Jul 2017

Taking Steps To Prevent Falls, Kimberly Okechukwu

Doctor of Occupational Therapy Capstone Projects

Fall prevention is imperative in skilled nursing and long-term care facilities. According to the CDC, “about 1,800 older adults living in nursing homes die each year from fall-related injuries and those who survive frequently sustain injuries that result in permanent disability and reduced quality of life”. “Falls can also result in severe pain, high medical costs, fear of falling, less participation in activities, and reduced quality of life “(CDC 2015). Appropriate and effective fall prevention programs need to be established and implemented to reduce falls in nursing homes, which will in turn improve the quality of care.

A Defect In Myoblast Fusion Underlies Carey-Fineman-Ziter Syndrome, S Digioia, S Connors, N. Matsunami, J Cannavino, M Rose, N Gillette, Andrea Gropman, +Several Additional Authors

Neurology Faculty Publications

Multinucleate cellular syncytial formation is a hallmark of skeletal muscle differentiation. Myomaker, encoded by Mymk (Tmem8c), is a well-conserved plasma membrane protein required for myoblast fusion to form multinucleated myotubes in mouse, chick, and zebrafish. Here, we report that autosomal recessive mutations in MYMK (OMIM 615345) cause Carey-Fineman-Ziter syndrome in humans (CFZS; OMIM 254940) by reducing but not eliminating MYMK function. We characterize MYMK-CFZS as a congenital myopathy with marked facial weakness and additional clinical and pathologic features that distinguish it from other congenital neuromuscular syndromes. We show that a heterologous cell fusion assay in vitro and allelic …

Bernard Lonergan’S Functional Specialties And Academic Libraries, Lisa Madeleine Rose-Wiles Jul 2017

Bernard Lonergan’S Functional Specialties And Academic Libraries, Lisa Madeleine Rose-Wiles

Library Publications

I apply the framework of Bernard Lonergan’s functional specialties to academic libraries. This process helped to identify and situate the challenges that libraries face today. These largely stem from historical changes that align with the three challenges to higher education that Lonergan identified in Topics in Education nearly 60 years ago: “the masses”, “the new learning”, and “increasing specialization”. Despite lofty Mission Statements and Strategic Plans (policy making and planning), the foundations of today’s academic libraries are unclear, largely because dialectics surrounding those historical changes have not been resolved. This has led to considerable concern about the future of academic …

Hormonal pleiotropy—the simultaneous influence of a single hormone on multiple traits—has been hypothesized as an important mechanism underlying personality, and circulating glucocorticoids are central to this idea. A major gap in our understanding is the neural basis for this link. Here we examine the stability and structure of behavioral, endocrine and neuroendocrine traits in a population of songbirds (Parus major). Upon identifying stable and covarying behavioral and endocrine traits, we test the hypothesis that risk-averse personalities exhibit a neuroendocrine stress axis that is systemically potentiated—characterized by stronger glucocorticoid reactivity and weaker negative feedback. We show high among-individual variation and covariation …
