Seeking An Operational Definition Of Dieting: A Daily Diary Study, Elizabeth Anne Mclaughlin
Seeking An Operational Definition Of Dieting: A Daily Diary Study, Elizabeth Anne Mclaughlin
Psychology ETDs
Dieting is commonly considered a weight loss technique, but research consistently shows that it does not result in weight loss. Thirty to fifty percent of women report that they are dieting at any given time, typically by responding to a single “yes/no” item asking whether they are dieting. To explain why dieting may not result in weight loss, a detailed picture was needed as to people’s behavior when they report that they are dieting, including weight loss strategies and dietary intake. Other constructs previously studied as similar to dieting were “watching what I eat” and “eating healthy.” More information was …

Analysis Of Biodegradation Of Bioplastics Made Of Cassava Starch, Nanang Eko Wahyuningtiyas, Heru Suryanto
Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)
Environmental pollution due to plastic waste taking too long to decompose has become a global problem. There have been numerous solutions proposed, one of which is the use of bioplastics. The use of cassava starch as the main ingredient in the manufacture of bioplastics shows great potential, since Indonesia has a diverse range of starch-producing plants. The aim of the present study is to analyse the effect of glycerol on microbial degradation. This experimental research investigated the use of cassava flour mixed with glycerol plasticizer at various concentrations (0, 2, 2.5, 3%) in the synthesis of bioplastics. The aspects studied …

Beliefs And Attitudes Toward Intimate Partner Violence In A Group Of Young Puerto Ricans, David Perez-Jimenez, Soélix M. Rodríguez-Medina, Francisco J. Rodríguez-León
The Qualitative Report
In this paper we aim to describe the beliefs and attitudes young people in Puerto Rico have toward intimate partner violence (IPV). Although Puerto Rico has a high rate of IPV, little empirical research has been conducted about the beliefs and attitudes people have regarding this issue. We conducted 20 in-depth qualitative interviews with young men and women. Data was analyzed using the qualitative content analysis approach. Participants expressed that men are more violent than women because of testosterone, machismo, and alcohol and other drug use. Both male and female participants stated that they believe they have the same rights …

The importance of nucleic acids detection to biological science has expanded as new technology enables historically unprecedented insight into their form and function. Additional challenges to assay development have resulted from the need to detect everything from enormous genomic sequences to miniscule non-coding RNA. The focus of this work centers on a recognition of the complexity required of modern analytical techniques and a strategy to eliminate as much technical surplus as can be achieved without detrimental performance. Initially, a laboratory-based technique has been developed to directly detect miRNA in complex matrices using fluorescence, and this was applied to quantitation of …

Dynamics Of Community Composition And Ecological Processes In Mesic And Semiarid Grasslands, Sydney K. Jones
Biology ETDs
Grassland communities change in response to disturbance and chronic resource alterations. Temporal community dynamics were examined within mesic tallgrass prairie at Konza Prairie in northeastern Kansas, and semiarid desert grassland and shrubland in central New Mexico. In both grasslands, producer and consumer communities changed over time in response to fire frequency and shrub encroachment. Directional change was driven by changes in abundances of species already in the community, rather than turnover in species composition. Despite directional change, species richness was highly stable, making species abundance rather than richness a better indicator of future community change. Species reordering also occurred during …

An anomalously high chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) event (>2 mg/m3) during June 2015 in the South Central Red Sea (17.5° to 22°N, 37° to 42°E) was observed using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data from the Terra and Aqua satellite platforms. This differs from the low Chl-a values (<0.5 mg/m3) usually encountered over the same region during summertime. To assess this anomaly and possible causes, we used a wide range of oceanographical and meteorological datasets, including Chl-a concentrations, sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface height (SSH), mixed layer depth (MLD), ocean current velocity and aerosol optical depth (AOD) obtained from different sensors and models. Findings confirmed this anomalous behavior in the spatial domain using Hovmöller data analysis techniques, while a time series analysis addressed monthly and daily variability. Our analysis suggests that a combination of factors controlling nutrient supply contributed to the anomalous phytoplankton growth. These factors include horizontal transfer of upwelling water through eddy circulation and possible mineral fertilization from atmospheric dust deposition. Coral reefs might have provided extra nutrient supply, yet this is out of the scope of our analysis. We thought that dust deposition from a coastal dust jet event in late June, coinciding with the phytoplankton blooms in the area under investigation, might have also contributed as shown by our AOD findings. However, a lag cross correlation showed a two- month lag between strong dust outbreak and the high Chl-a anomaly. The high Chl-a concentration at the edge of the eddy emphasizes the importance of horizontal advection in fertilizing oligotrophic (nutrient poor) Red Sea waters.

Chlorogenic acid, a major polyphenol in edible plants, possesses strong antioxidant activity, anti-lipid peroxidation and anticancer effects. It used for industrial applications; however, this is limited by its instability to heat or light. In this study, we, for the first time synthesized chlorogenic acid glucoside (CHG) via transglycosylation using dextransucrase from Leuconostoc mesenteroides and sucrose. CHG was purified and its structure determined by nuclear magnetic resonance and matrix-associated laser desorption ionization–time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. The production yield of CHG was 44.0% or 141 mM, as determined by response surface methodology. CHG possessed a 65% increase in water solubility and a 2-fold …

Many practical problems are related to prediction, where the main interest is at subject or sub-population level. In such cases, it is possible to make substantial gains in prediction accuracy by identifying a class that a new subject belongs to. In this way, the new subject is potentially associated with a random effect corresponding to the same class in the training data, so that method of mixed model prediction can be used to make the best prediction. We propose a new method, called classified mixed model prediction (CMMP), to achieve this goal. We develop CMMP for both prediction of mixed …

Resistance To Xylem Cavitation In Evergreen Ferns Correlates With Seasonal Dehydration Levels, Not Mechanical Strength, Helen I. Holmlund, Kaitlyn E. Sauer, Breahna M. Gillespie, Jarmila Pittermann, Stephen D. Davis
Biology
Ferns in the Santa Monica Mountains of southern California display a range of responses to severe drought. In this study, we further characterized the traits that may contribute to fern survival in a mediterranean-type climate. Due to anatomical differences between ferns and angiosperms, we predicted that ferns would exhibit no correlation between stipe mechanical strength and vulnerability to water stress-induced cavitation of stipe xylem. However, we predicted that ferns would show a correlation between seasonal water stress (minimum water potential) and cavitation resistance. Our results support these hypotheses; however, we must increase our sample size of evergreen fern species in …
