Gender Differences And The Impact Of Exposure To Violence On Depressive Symptoms And Sleep Habits Among Young African American Adults, Forough Saadatmand ., Roderick Harrison, Jennifer Bronson, Deanna Crouse, Monica Jackson, Mark Johnson

Journal of Family Strengths

While research has documented the impact of exposure to violence on sleep and depression, less is known about what forms of violence most affect depressive symptoms and sleep habits, and how the effects vary by the type of violence and by gender. Data were drawn from a sample of 440 African American young adults ages 18-25 living in Washington, DC. We first conducted factor analysis of the exposure to childhood and community violence scales to identify domains or types of violence. We then conducted a series of regression analyses to assess how the various types of childhood and community violence …

The Neuroprotective Compound P7c3-A20 Promotes Neurogenesis And Improves Functional Outcomes After Focal Cerebral Ischemia, Zachary Balmuth-Loris

Open Access Dissertations

Ischemic stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide and the leading cause of adult long-term disability in the United States. Despite its prevalence, there are few therapeutic interventions available. The neuroprotective compound P7C3-A20 (A20) has been shown to reduce mature neuronal cell death while also increasing the net magnitude of postnatal neurogenesis in models of neurodegeneration and acute brain injury. A20 compounds demonstrate protection by enhancing the flux of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) in mammalian cells, a proposed therapeutic approach to treating cerebral ischemia. The studies carried out in this dissertation sought to investigate the effectiveness of A20 …

Accurate Cytogenetic Biodosimetry Through Automated Dicentric Chromosome Curation And Metaphase Cell Selection, Jin Liu, Yanxin Li, Ruth Wilkins, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, Joan H. Knoll, Peter Rogan

Biochemistry Publications

Accurate digital image analysis of abnormal microscopic structures relies on high quality images and on minimizing the rates of false positive (FP) and negative objects in images. Cytogenetic biodosimetry detects dicentric chromosomes (DCs) that arise from exposure to ionizing radiation, and determines radiation dose received based on DC frequency. Improvements in automated DC recognition increase the accuracy of dose estimates by reclassifying FP DCs as monocentric chromosomes or chromosome fragments. We also present image segmentation methods to rank high quality digital metaphase images and eliminate suboptimal metaphase cells. A set of chromosome morphology segmentation methods selectively filtered out FP DCs …

Raman Spectroscopy Based Validation For Handheld Non-Invasive Glucose Measurement, Dong Jae Joo Aug 2017

Raman Spectroscopy Based Validation For Handheld Non-Invasive Glucose Measurement, Dong Jae Joo

Theses and Dissertations

Diabetes mellitus has been steadily increasing for the past three decades and has been one of the major causes of death. Diabetes may develop serious complications as well. Even though diabetes can be controlled without developing severe complications by steady checking of glucose level, the physical pain in pricking fingers and the emotional distress associated with using conventional invasive glucose meter make diabetics neglect self-monitoring of blood glucose. Hence, the improvement of non-invasive glucose measurement technology could give a huge effect on diabetes patient for not only improving health but also an economic benefit. However, no non-invasive glucose monitoring device …

Machine Learning Based Protein Sequence To (Un)Structure Mapping And Interaction Prediction, Sumaiya Iqbal Aug 2017

Machine Learning Based Protein Sequence To (Un)Structure Mapping And Interaction Prediction, Sumaiya Iqbal

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Proteins are the fundamental macromolecules within a cell that carry out most of the biological functions. The computational study of protein structure and its functions, using machine learning and data analytics, is elemental in advancing the life-science research due to the fast-growing biological data and the extensive complexities involved in their analyses towards discovering meaningful insights. Mapping of protein’s primary sequence is not only limited to its structure, we extend that to its disordered component known as Intrinsically Disordered Proteins or Regions in proteins (IDPs/IDRs), and hence the involved dynamics, which help us explain complex interaction within a cell that …

Key Points Summary

  • We report how blood pressure, cardiac output and vascular resistance are related to height, weight, body surface area (BSA), and body mass index (BMI) in healthy young adults at supine rest and standing.
  • Much inter-subject variability in young adult's blood pressure, currently attributed to health status, may actually result from inter-individual body size differences.
  • Each cardiovascular variable is linearly related to height, weight and/or BSA (more than to BMI).
  • When supine, cardiac output is positively related, while vascular resistance is negatively related, to body size. Upon standing, the change in vascular resistance is positively related to size. …

Objective

The upregulated expression of heparin binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF) in the vessel and circulation is associated with risk of cardiovascular disease. In this study, we tested the effects of HB-EGF targeting using HB-EGF-specific antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) on the development of aortic aneurysm in a mouse aneurysm model.

Approach and results

Low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) deficient mice (male, 16 weeks of age) were injected with control and HB-EGF ASOs for 10 weeks. To induce aneurysm, the mice were fed a high fat diet (22% fat, 0.2% cholesterol; w/w) at 5 week point of ASO administration and infused with angiotensin …

A Mixed Methods Study Of The Performance And Dynamics Of University Technology Transfer And Commercialization, Berk Dogan Aug 2017

A Mixed Methods Study Of The Performance And Dynamics Of University Technology Transfer And Commercialization, Berk Dogan

LSU Master's Theses

The technology transfer and commercialization encompasses various activities involved in acquiring intellectual property rights for the inventions, marketing of the inventions, and diffusing into the public domain through commercialization. Although many scholars have studied technology transfer within the academic institutions' context, the process has been assumed to be sequential. The technology transfer process is a complex process to be generalized as a linear sequential process. A mixed methods approach has been used to triangulate the findings from the literature review and descriptive analyses to conceptualize an alternative model that reflects the actual process more accurately. It was found that the …

Mechanisms Of Invasion And Competition In Anolis Sagrei And Anolis Carolinensis Lizards In Southeastern Louisiana, Jessica R. Edwards Aug 2017

Mechanisms Of Invasion And Competition In Anolis Sagrei And Anolis Carolinensis Lizards In Southeastern Louisiana, Jessica R. Edwards

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Invasive species can have a variety of effects on the behavior and ecology of native species. Currently in New Orleans, Louisiana, both A. sagrei and A. carolinensis lizards are relatively abundant, but the A. sagrei population is expanding rapidly. I used a combination of laboratory and field studies to investigate factors that might be influencing local dominance of invasive A. sagrei over native A. carolinensis populations, including habitat use, display behavior, interspecific aggressive interactions, and plasticity. When comparing display behavior and habitat use in anole populations across three field sites in southern Louisiana, I found differences in male display behavior …

Combating Stress With Yoga: A Theoretical Model Of Self-Regulation, Sierra K. Wait Aug 2017

Combating Stress With Yoga: A Theoretical Model Of Self-Regulation, Sierra K. Wait

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Exposure to environmental stressors may challenge children’s developing self-regulatory abilities and increase their risk of developing emotional and behavior problems. Interventions aimed at improving children’s self-regulatory skills, specifically emotion regulation and attentional control, may reduce children’s risk for adjustment problems. The present study proposed a novel theoretical model which describes how participation in yoga may increase children’s self-regulatory skills and increase children’s mindfulness, or the ability to focus attention on the present moment. Both self-regulation and mindfulness were expected to be associated with fewer anxiety problems. Components of the theoretical model were evaluated using a very small sample of at-risk, …

Impact Of Seed Protein Alleles From Three Soybean Sources On Seed Composition And Agronomic Traits, Lillian F. Brzostowski, Timothy I. Pruski, James Specht, Brian W. Diers

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Evaluation of seed protein alleles in soybean populations showed that an increase in protein concentration is generally associated with a decrease in oil concentration and yield.

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] meal is one of the most important plant-based protein sources in the world. Developing cultivars high in seed protein concentration and seed yield is a difficult task because the traits have an inverse relationship. Over two decades ago, a protein quantitative trait loci (QTL) was mapped on chromosome (chr) 20, and this QTL has been mapped to the same position in several studies and given the confirmed QTL …

A Compact Energy-Independent Czt-Based Gamma Camera, Youngho Seo, Yonggang Cui, Paul O'Connor, Qiu Huang, Ralph B. James, Debasis Mitra, Hui Pan

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Conventional gamma cameras are heavy and occupy large volume for all required hardware components. Direct-conversion solid-state detectors like cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) enable a compact design of gamma cameras. In addition, conventional gamma cameras require different collimators for different gamma-ray photon energies, and the change of collimators between studies sometimes disrupts the workflow. To ease this inconvenience (i.e., bulkiness and collimator change), we have recently developed a compact, CZT-based, energy-independent gamma camera that requires only one collimator to cover a broad range of photon energies. In this paper, we show our design parameters and system specifications as well as simulation …
