To assess miRNA evolution across the Drosophila genus, we analyzed several billion small RNA reads across 12 fruit fly species. These data permit comprehensive curation of species- and clade-specific variation in miRNA identity, abundance, and processing. Among well-conserved miRNAs, we observed unexpected cases of clade-specific variation in 5′ end precision, occasional antisense loci, and putatively noncanonical loci. We also used strict criteria to identify a large set (649) of novel, evolutionarily restricted miRNAs. Within the bulk collection of species-restricted miRNAs, two notable subpopulations are splicing-derived mirtrons and testes-restricted, recently evolved, clustered (TRC) canonical miRNAs. Antioxidant Trace Elements And Oxidative Stress Status In Dairy Cattle Suffering From Mastitis, Medhat Nassif, Hussam Ibrahim, Heba Moharam

Mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary glands caused by several pathogens. Reactive oxygen species are natural end products of the intensive cellular metabolism. Oxidative stress occurs when there is a disturbance of homeostasis causing inflammation of the mammary gland. This study was performed to evaluate blood antioxidant profile and trace elements in dairy cows with clinical mastitis. For this aim, venous blood samples were collected from 116 cows (100 mastitic, 16 control). In cows with clinical mastitis, there was a significant (p < 0.05) increase in the clinical index score compared with control group. Biochemically, there was a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in super oxide dismutase, catalase and total antioxidant capacity as well as in the level of zinc. However, there was a significant (p < 0.05) increase in the levels of malondialdehyde and glutathione reductase as well as in that of copper. The results of the current study indicate that the body antioxidant defense system was compromised in dairy cows with clinical mastitis creating a state of oxidative stress.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate hepatic and renal functions in dairy cows suffered from sub clinical ketosis during the transition period. For this purpose, 730 Holstein Friesian dairy cattle, from a commercial dairy farm were included in this investigation. On the farm, only twenty four cows were located at a late gestation period. Prevalence of H9 Avian Influenza Virus (AIV-H9) in Dakahlia governorate during 2012 - 2015 was undertaken to update the epidemiology of avian influenza virus infections among poultry flocks in Egypt. A total of 50 chicken flocks were examined (28 broiler flock and 22 layer flock). Results revealed that 18 samples were HA positive while 7 out of 18 samples were positive by chromatographic strip test for common antigen of AIV. Twenty two pigeon paramyxovirus (PPMV) isolates were recovered from 50 tested diseased pigeons. Tested pigeons suffered from nervous manifestation, listlessness, inappetance, inability to fly and greenish diarrhea. Diseased pigeons were collected from Dakahlia governorate during 2014 and 2015. Virus isolation was done in embryonated chicken eggs via allantoic sac inoculation. Isolates were identified as PMV by HA and RT-PCR tests. Pathogenicity for five isolates was done via intracerebral inoculation of one day old 10 SPF-chicks for each isolate. Intracerebral pathogenicity index varied from 0.0 to 1.44. The increase in dietary cholesterol to perform a rat model for atherosclerotic diet would result in a significant increase in serum levels of total cholesterol and malondialdehyde and blood SOD activity in rats. Moreover, there was significant decrease in serum levels of LDL-C, triacylglycerol and GSH, In addition to blood catalase activity. Although, there was a nonsignificant change in in serum HDL-C and blood GPx activity. However, dietary supplementation with olive oil mixed with atherosclerotic diet ameliorates this undesirable effect .

This study was performed to investigate the adverse effects of lincomycin (given orally at 500 mg/kg daily for 21 days) and spectinomycin (given S.C at 250 mg/kg daily for 30 days) on 24 apparently clinically healthy adult male albino rats (175 - 250 gm). Blood, serum and tissues (Liver, kidney and testis) samples were collected for hematological, biochemical and histopathological for investigation. The obtained results revealed that, lincomycin and spectinomycin treated groups showed a significant decrease in total erythrocytic and leucocytic count (especially lymphocytes), hemoglobin values and PCV value. The present study was performed on rats for studying effect of different concentrations of lysine and methionine in carnitine metabolism in liver and muscle tissues. The animals which fed low concentrations of lysine and methionine showed significant decrease in carnitine metabolism when compared with normal control group. On the other hand the rats supplied with high concentrations of lysine and methionine showed markedly increase in carnitine metabolism. We present a new photonic magnetic sensor that can yield information on the spatial angle of rotation of the sensor within a given static magnetic field that based upon an optical fiber platform that has a wavelength-encoded output and a demonstrated sensitivity of 543 pm/mT. This optical fiber magnetic field sensor combines a conventional, UV-laser inscribed long period grating (LPG) with a magnetostrictive material Terfenol-D that coats and fills 50-µm micro-slots running adjacent and parallel to the fiber central axis. About 80% of adolescents in the United States are experimenting with alcohol by age 15 (Davies, 2012). A major factor in this rate of alcohol use can be explained by adolescent’s propensity for learning from their environment (Tomilson & Brown, 2012). Unfortunately, the current social climate teenagers are experiencing could be promoting alcohol involvement (Coker & Borders, 2001). This review examines the impact of several social attitudes and pressures contributing to adolescent problem drinking. Further understanding of these factors may be valuable to parents and professionals aiming to prevent the development of problem adolescent drinking behaviors.

Early theoretical approaches to emotion described it in terms of physiological states, but more recent research points to its connection to cognitive appraisal and goal progress. Cervical cancer remains commonly diagnosed in Vietnamese American women. Despite efforts to increase cervical cancer screening among Vietnamese American women, participation rates are persistently lower than the national goal. The objective of this study is to explore beliefs of Vietnamese American women about cervical cancer, cervical cancer screening, and cancer prevention vaccines. A qualitative descriptive investigation captured group perceptions about meaning and beliefs of cervical cancer, screening, and cancer prevention vaccines, and participants’ stories using a community-based participatory research approach.

Although production of PCBs has stopped, they remain a pressing environmental problem due to their slow biodegradation and high lipophilicity. Assessment of shark health can provide valuable insight into overall population health. In this study, immunological assessment tools are reviewed for their use with wild shark populations. Nurse sharks, Ginglymostoma cirratum, were non-lethally blood sampled from wild individuals in south Florida. Reference ranges are given for the first time for serum protein electrophoresis, which included five fractions that correspond closely with other elasmobranch species. Differences between serum and plasma may be negligible for protein electrophoresis, and therefore, plasma may be preferred in field settings. Sheep are managed under a variety of different environments (continually outdoors, partially outdoors with seasonal or diurnal variation, continuously indoors) and for different purposes, which makes assessing welfare challenging. This diversity means that resource-based indicators are not particularly useful and, thus, a welfare assessment scheme for sheep, focusing on animal-based indicators, was developed. We focus specifically on ewes, as the most numerous group of sheep present on farm, although many of the indicators may also have relevance to adult male sheep.
