Analysis And Calculation Of Electrostatic Force For Multiple Particles To Demonstrate Particles' Behavior Towards-Equilibrium, Nandine Mitra

Student Theses and Dissertations

Within the field of physics, mathematics & engineering, the aim of modern research is tending towards to depict the accurate model of particular phenomenon with proper explanation. With the help of established theories, it is possible to determine specific modeling for the desired physical observation, leading toward new discoveries. Within the field of theoretical physics, the term of electrostatic force is very common. By Coulomb’s Law, interaction between two charged particles can be described easily in terms of electrostatic force. But to outline interactions between multiple particles towards equilibrium is still a challenge. Here, in our work, we look into …

Evaluation Of Cadmium Bioaccumulaiton Of Periphyton And Aquatic Invertebrates Within Tributaries Of The Buffalo National River, Jacob Rollins Mccauley

Student Theses and Dissertations

The Rush Mining District, located along the Buffalo River in Arkansas, has a significant history of metal-mining operations. The tails and spoils of these operations deposit heavy amounts of raw ore into streams, including the deposition of cadmium, a minor constituent. Periphyton and invertebrate samples from two creeks within the Rush Mining District were measured for cadmium. Additionally, two creeks with no history of mining were sampled. Periphyton samples from mining sites had significantly higher concentrations of cadmium than samples collected at control sites. Invertebrate samples were classified into trophic levels before analysis. Invertebrate samples collected at treatment sites only …

Genetic Structure And Diversity Of Southern Disjunct Populations Of Etheostoma Caeruleum And Chrosomus Erythrogaster, Kyle James Dineen Dec 2017

Genetic Structure And Diversity Of Southern Disjunct Populations Of Etheostoma Caeruleum And Chrosomus Erythrogaster, Kyle James Dineen

Student Theses and Dissertations

Etheostoma caeruleum and Chrosomus erythrogaster are widespread with overlapping distributions that show comparable patterns of naturally disjunct populations on their range margins. Both species have populations on Crowley’s Ridge, AR and the Bluff Hills, MS, relatively recent geological formations. Microsatellite DNA loci were examined for both fish species to evaluate genetic diversity and connectivity among populations on Crowley’s Ridge, the Bluff Hills, and larger core populations. Genetic structuring was found between all populations of both species with lower genetic diversity found in populations of both species on Crowley’s Ridge. Results from this study suggest that both target species colonized these …

Mechanistic Insights Into The Reaction Of Chlorination Of Tryptophan Catalyzed By Tryptophan 7-Halogenase., Tatyana Karabencheva-Christova, Juan Torras, Adrian J Mulholland, Alessio Lodola, Christo Christov

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Tryptophan 7-halogenase catalyzes chlorination of free tryptophan to 7-chlorotryptophan, which is the first step in the antibiotic pyrrolnitrin biosynthesis. Many biologically and pharmaceutically active natural products contain chlorine and thus, an understanding of the mechanism of its introduction into organic molecules is important. Whilst enzyme-catalyzed chlorination is accomplished with ease, it remains a difficult task for the chemists. Therefore, utilizing enzymes in the synthesis of chlorinated organic compounds is important, and providing atomistic mechanistic insights about the reaction mechanism of tryptophan 7-halogenase is vital and timely. In this work, we examined a mechanism for the reaction of tryptophan chlorination, performed …

Vertebrate Body Size Jumps The Wright Way, Peter J. Wagner Dec 2017

Vertebrate Body Size Jumps The Wright Way, Peter J. Wagner

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Fossil data provide copious evidence that anatomical (morphological) change within individual lineages is not constant: short bursts of great change commonly separate long durations of little change (1, 2). Despite this, most models of morphological change assume that probabilities of morphological character change are the same from one generation to the next: even if rates change over time—such as in “Cambrian explosion” or “early burst” models, where high disparity among anatomies evolves early—then it is still assumed that fast rates of continuous character change gave way to slow rates of continuous change (3). In statistical parlance, early bursts usually are …

No Consistent Evidence For Advancing Or Delaying Trends In Spring Phenology On The Tibetan Plateau, Xufeng Wang, Jingfeng Xiao, Xin Li, Guodong Cheng, Mingguo Ma, Tao Che, Shaoying Wang, Jinkui Wu

Faculty Publications

Vegetation phenology is a sensitive indicator of climate change and has significant effects on the exchange of carbon, water, and energy between the terrestrial biosphere and the atmosphere. The Tibetan Plateau, the Earth's “third pole,” is a unique region for studying the long‐term trends in vegetation phenology in response to climate change because of the sensitivity of its alpine ecosystems to climate and its low‐level human disturbance. There has been a debate whether the trends in spring phenology over the Tibetan Plateau have been continuously advancing over the last two to three decades. In this study, we examine the trends …

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are well known to exhibit antimicrobial effects through plausible interactions with proteins and/or deoxyribonucleic acid inside the bacteria. Yet a quantitative understanding on the antimicrobial activities of AgNPs remains obscure. Here we conducted in-depth kinetic growth assays and colony-forming unit (CFU) assays on Escherichia coli (E. coli) cultured in AgNPs or Ag ion-containing growth media. Compared to the Ag-absent culture medium, it was found that the growth rate of the bacteria remained unaffected but the lag time of the bacterial growth was extended due to the presence of AgNPs or Ag ions. From the CFU-based time-kill curves, …

The Violent Persecution Of The Iranian Bahá’Í: A Call To Take A Human Capabilities Approach To Defining Genocide, Camilia R. Brown

Brooklyn Journal of International Law

Iran is home to an estimated 300,000 members of the Bahá’í faith, a global religion that originated in Iran in the early nineteenth century. Since the faith’s inception, thousands of Bahá’ís have been killed, imprisoned, and tortured. Today, they are unable to attend colleges and universities, hold business licenses, bury their dead, or gather for worship. Since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, the current regime has worked to systemically impede the progress of the Bahá’í community. While hundreds of Bahá’ís have died at the hands of the current regime, the high threshold for bringing a case under the intent prong …

Myxosporidiosis In Oreochromis Niloticus; Molecular Identification And Oxidative Stress Biomarkers, Nevien Abdelkhalek, M. El-Adl, M. Hamed, M. Al-Araby

Mansoura Veterinary Medical Journal

Myxosporidiosisis a protozoan parasitic fish disease that causes damages to fish organs and might eventually end with mortalities and deterioration of meat quality of the affected fish. The presence of parasitic infestation is usually accompanied with the production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species that produces extra damage to host organs and inactivation of antioxidant defense system that increase the intensity of parasitic infestation. Recently, the response of the infested tissue to oxidative stress is varieddepending on the type of parasite; therefore the use of oxidative stress markers as indicator for myxobolus infestation is relevant. In the present study, Oreochromis …

Estimating Density And Residency Of Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) In Three Estuarine Sites In South Carolina, Jessica Nicole Conway Dec 2017

Estimating Density And Residency Of Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) In Three Estuarine Sites In South Carolina, Jessica Nicole Conway

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Of the three estuarine bottlenose dolphin stocks in South Carolina, two are considered data insufficient, with no minimum population estimate or assigned potential biological removal value. Additionally, the Northern Georgia Southern South Carolina Estuarine System (NGSSCES) stock’s boundaries are based on sighting data that do not extend to the full area encompassed by the boundary lines. In areas where stock boundaries are not clearly defined and data is insufficient for traditional methods of estimating abundance, density may provide insight into local distributions and serve as a proxy for actual abundance. Photo-identification surveys were conducted in three sites, representative of the …

Lyme Disease Ecology: Effects Of Habitat And Hosts On The Density And Distribution Of Borrelia Burgdorferi-Infected Ixodes Scapularis, Megan Ainsley Linske Dec 2017

Lyme Disease Ecology: Effects Of Habitat And Hosts On The Density And Distribution Of Borrelia Burgdorferi-Infected Ixodes Scapularis, Megan Ainsley Linske

Doctoral Dissertations

The research discussed in this dissertation examined host and habitat composition in Connecticut and their effect on the ecology of Lyme disease. Previous studies on management strategies sought a one-size-fits-all solution. However, Connecticut may require its own implementation of management strategies supported by research executed in its respective environment. Therefore, a novel approach that addresses the key components of a particular habitat, in this case Connecticut’s northern hardwood forests with an invasive plant understory, may yield better results than a “silver bullet” solution produced by a model or conducted in a different geographic location.

My research is conducted in Connecticut …

Optimizing Fabrication And Modeling Of Quantum Dot Superlattice For Fets And Nonvolatile Memories, Pial Mirdha Dec 2017

Optimizing Fabrication And Modeling Of Quantum Dot Superlattice For Fets And Nonvolatile Memories, Pial Mirdha

Doctoral Dissertations

Quantum Dot Superlattice (QDSL) are novel structures which can be applied to transistors and memory devices to produce unique current voltage characteristics. QDSL are made of Silicon and Germanium with an inner intrinsic layer surrounded by their respective oxides and in the single digit nanometer range. When used in transistors they have shown to induce 3 to 4 states for Multi-Valued Logic (MVL). When applied to memory they have been demonstrated to retain 2 bits of charge which instantly double the memory density. For commercial application they must produce consistent and repeatable current voltage characteristics, the current QDSL structures consist …

Unravelling The Correlation Of Electronic Structure And Carrier Dynamics In Cuins2 Nanoparticles, Wenhui Hu, John Ludwig, Brian Pattengale, Sizhuo Yang, Cunming Liu, Xiaobing Zuo, Xiaoyi Zhang, Jier Huang

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

In this work, we report the direct correlation of photoinduced carrier dynamics and electronic structure of CuInS2 (CIS) nanoparticles (NPs) using the combination of multiple spectroscopic techniques including steady-state X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), optical transient absorption (OTA), and X-ray transient (XTA) absorption spectroscopy. XAS results show that CIS NPs contain a large amount of surface Cu atoms with ≪four-coordination, which is more severe in CIS NPs with shorter nucleation times, indicating the presence of more Cu defect states in CIS NPs with smaller size particles. Using the combination of OTA and XTA spectroscopy, we show that electrons are trapped …

The Role Of Orphan Nuclear Receptor Dax-1 (Nr0b1) In Human Breast Cancer Cells: Expression, Proliferation And Metastasis, Erin Dishington

Master's Theses

The orphan nuclear hormone receptor DAX-1 (Dosage Sensitive Sex Reversal, Adrenal Hypoplasia Congenita on the X Chromosome, gene 1) plays an important role in the development of adrenal and gonadal tissues and functions as a global negative-regulator of steroidogenesis. In addition, it is known to be involved in several diseases including some cancers. Herein, we describe our examination of the role of DAX-1 in breast cancer, specifically its influence on proliferation and metastasis and its expression during progressive stages of disease. In an effort to understand how DAX-1 influences breast cancer cell proliferation and metastasis, we used MCF7 breast cancer …

School of Biomedical Sciences

Filamentous fungi are important cell factories. In contrast, we do not understand well even basic physiological behavior in these organisms. This includes the widespread phenomenon of organic acid excretion. One strong hurdle to fully exploit the metabolic capacity of these organisms is the enormous, highly environment sensitive phenotypic plasticity. In this work we explored organic acid excretion in Penicillium ochrochloron from a new point of view by simultaneously investigating three essential metabolic levels: the plasma membrane H+-ATPase (PM); energy metabolism, in particular adenine and pyridine nucleotides (M); and respiration, in particular the alternative oxidase (R). This was done in strictly …
