We present here bulk sediment major element chemistry, Nd and Sr isotope ratios, and detrital apatite fission-track (AFT) and U-Pb zircon ages to characterize the provenance of the southwestern Taklimakan Desert (northwest China) and the three major rivers draining this region. We establish the spatial and temporal controls on erosion and sediment transport in the modern Tibetan rain shadow. The Hotan River drains the North Kunlun block and is characterized by zircon populations at 160–230 Ma and 370–520 Ma. The Yarkand River shares these grains with the Hotan, but also has a very prominent zircon population at 40–160 Ma, which …

There are over 100 enzyme-catalyzed modifications on transfer RNA (tRNA) molecules. The levels and identity of wobble uridine (U) modifications are affected by environmental conditions and diseased states, making wobble U detection a potential biomarker for exposures and pathological conditions. The current detection of RNA modifications requires working with nucleosides in bulk samples. Nanopore detection technology uses a single-molecule approach that has the potential to detect tRNA modifications. To evaluate the feasibility of this approach, we have performed all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulation studies of a five-layered graphene nanopore by localizing canonical and modified uridine nucleosides. We found that in …

Can The Qualities Of Intrinsically Motivated Individuals At Diverse “Life Stages” Be Harnessed To Create Social Change?, Donna Lynne Greene
Can The Qualities Of Intrinsically Motivated Individuals At Diverse “Life Stages” Be Harnessed To Create Social Change?, Donna Lynne Greene
Theses - ALL
For my thesis investigation, I researched the intrinsic motivational qualities of individuals at diverse “life stages”. I’m trying to develop a method or system of solving problems that tapped into these main things: First the idea of intrinsic motivation, Second the knowledge and understanding of diverse life stages, Third the methods of design thinking, Fourth the cooperative nature of community and collaboration.
I explored these things to develop an intergenerational system of collaboration and thought exchange toward the goal of helping to solve societal issues on many levels, (personal, local, regional, internationally). My design is a collaborative social innovation community.

Temporal Trends In Fish Mercury In Response To Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus Dolomieu) Removal In Little Moose Lake, Adirondacks, New York, Mariah Shannon Taylor
Theses - ALL
Mercury contamination within aquatic ecosystems is a concern in the Adirondack Park of New York State due to mercury deposition from global and regional atmospheric sources coupled with watershed characteristics that drive biophysical processes which mobilize and transform mercury, increasing its bioavailability. Short-term internal biological forces also impact mercury bioaccumulation as fish communities and populations change due to species introductions and lake management practices causing alterations in food web structure and energy transfer. Little Moose Lake, located in the southwestern region of the Adirondacks, provides an opportunity to study how shifts in food web dynamics may impact biological cycling of …

A Metaphysician's User Guide: The Epistemology Of Metaphysics, James Soo Lee
Dissertations - ALL
In my dissertation, I focus primarily on the justification for beliefs in the sorts of propositions that are the focus of scrutiny and debate in contemporary analytic metaphysics. I develop a theory of justification that revolves around the explanatory fit between a metaphysical theory and its evidence. I go on to defend the view that beliefs in contemporary analytic metaphysics are justified against skeptics, many of whom identify with the logical empiricist tradition. Finally, I offer some suggestions as to how metaphysics as a discipline can progress by examining the methodology of metaphysics and arguing how empirical work can potentially …

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine if, when and how African American parents discussed health issues and sexual risks with their teenagers. Interviews were conducted with thirty African American families connected to the South Side of Syracuse. The participants had connection to the South Side of Syracuse through either residency, employment, or church membership. I explore the context in which these conversations take place. When it came to teenage sexual relationships, discussions included other influences in the teenagers’ lives, as well as, how the information received outside of the home compared to what they were hearing from …
Continuum Models Of Collective Migration In Living Tissues, Kazage J. Christophe Utuje
Continuum Models Of Collective Migration In Living Tissues, Kazage J. Christophe Utuje
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation investigates the physical mechanics of collective cell migration in monolayers of epithelial cells. Coordinated cell motion underlies a number of biological processes, including wound healing, morphogenesis and cancer metastasis, and is controlled by the interplay of single cell motility, cell-cell adhesions, cell-substrate interaction, and cell contractility modulated by the acto-myosin cytoskeleton. Here we examine the competing roles of these mechanisms via a continuum model of a tissue as an active elastic medium, where mechanical deformations are coupled to and feed back onto chemical signaling.
We begin in Chapter 1 with a brief review of cell migration at both …
The Role Of Body Flexibility In Stroke Enhancements For Finite-Length Undulatory Swimmers In Viscoelastic Fluids, Becca Thomases, Robert D. Guy
The Role Of Body Flexibility In Stroke Enhancements For Finite-Length Undulatory Swimmers In Viscoelastic Fluids, Becca Thomases, Robert D. Guy
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
The role of passive body dynamics on the kinematics of swimming micro-organisms in complex fluids is investigated. Asymptotic analysis of small-amplitude motions of a finite-length undulatory swimmer in a Stokes-Oldroyd-B fluid is used to predict shape changes that result as body elasticity and fluid elasticity are varied. Results from the analysis are compared with numerical simulations and the numerically simulated shape changes agree with the analysis at both small and large amplitudes, even for strongly elastic flows. We compute a stroke-induced swimming speed that accounts for the shape changes, but not additional effects of fluid elasticity. Elasticity-induced shape changes lead …
Transformational Learning Experiences Of Perioperative Registered Nurses Who Have Completed A Perioperative Training Program, Randolph William Schild
Transformational Learning Experiences Of Perioperative Registered Nurses Who Have Completed A Perioperative Training Program, Randolph William Schild
Dissertations
The purpose of this case study was to determine which activities factor into transformational learning that may occur as a result of completing a perioperative preparation program for registered nurses. Through the process of describing the lived experiences of the participants who have completed a perioperative nurse training program, it also assisted in informing pedagogical practice by helping to establish the extent of transformational learning that occurs. The role of a perioperative nurse is one that is demanding, knowledge intensive, and highly collaborative. Perioperative nurse educators need to understand the process of transformation in order to assist new perioperative nurses …

The highly sensitive pressure sensor presented in this paper aims at wireless passive sensing in a high temperature environment by using microwave backscattering technology. The structure of the re-entrant resonator was analyzed and optimized using theoretical calculation, software simulation, and its equivalent lump circuit model was first modified by us. Micro-machining and high-temperature co-fired ceramic (HTCC) process technologies were applied to fabricate the sensor, solving the common problem of cavity sealing during the air pressure loading test. In addition, to prevent the response signal from being immersed in the strong background clutter of the hermetic metal chamber, which makes its …
Improving The Longitudinal Assessment Of Adhd In Pediatrically And Psychiatrically Referred Samples, Jun He
Improving The Longitudinal Assessment Of Adhd In Pediatrically And Psychiatrically Referred Samples, Jun He
Dissertations - ALL
The assessment and diagnostic process for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is beset with complications relating to the subjectivity of symptom reporting, the nonspecific and dimensional nature of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, the high prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities, and the shifting expression of symptoms and impairment due to developmental changes from childhood to adolescence and adulthood. Actual diagnostic practices may also differ from recommended best practices. These challenges have led to the proliferation of several clinical guidelines, many of which recommend various diagnostic practices and assessment instruments. Nonetheless, relatively little is presently known about the diagnostic efficiency of these various instruments used …
Mestizaje Ideology As Color-Blind Racism: Students' Discourses Of Colorism And Racism In Mexico, Yvonne Perez Lopez
Mestizaje Ideology As Color-Blind Racism: Students' Discourses Of Colorism And Racism In Mexico, Yvonne Perez Lopez
Dissertations - ALL
This study will open the discourse on inequity and its maintenance through colorism in
Mexico. The largest percent of the population is a mixture of indigenous and Spanish
descent. This is where racism via colorism occurs. Considered only as one group,
mestizos of a lighter skin color have more resemblance to being of white Spanish descent
and therefore are accepted over mestizos of darker skin color, who have a resemblance to
indigenous people. Racism is scarcely documented in Mexico. It is systematically
embedded in political, cultural and economic practices; and therefore limits democratic
and inclusive practices for all. Working with …

Breaking In And Busting Out: Cell-Penetrating Peptides And The Endosomal Escape Problem, Julia C. Lecher, Scott J. Nowak, Jonathan Mcmurry
Faculty Articles
Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) have long held great promise for the manipulation of living cells for therapeutic and research purposes. They allow a wide array of biomolecules from large, oligomeric proteins to nucleic acids and small molecules to rapidly and efficiently traverse cytoplasmic membranes. With few exceptions, if a molecule can be associated with a CPP, it can be delivered into a cell. However, a growing realization in the field is that CPP-cargo fusions largely remain trapped in endosomes and are eventually targeted for degradation or recycling rather than released into the cytoplasm or trafficked to a desired subcellular destination. This …
Whiteness Interrupted: Examining The Impact Of Racialized Space On White Racial Identity, Marcus Bell
Whiteness Interrupted: Examining The Impact Of Racialized Space On White Racial Identity, Marcus Bell
Dissertations - ALL
What does it mean to be white? This fundamental question stands at the heart of the interdisciplinary field of critical whiteness studies. Critical whiteness studies (CWS) epistemologically and theoretically upends traditional approaches to the study of race and racial inequality by averting the critical gaze from racially subordinate groups and focusing it upon the racially dominant group. Although insightful and highly influential, CWS has not sufficiently incorporated racialized space as a theoretically meaningful concept. Far too often, critical whiteness scholars speak of racial categories and racial experiences in board, spatially generalized terms. My dissertation moves beyond the general question of …
Stable Sparse Orthogonal Factorization Of Ill-Conditioned Banded Matrices For Parallel Computing, Qian Huang
Stable Sparse Orthogonal Factorization Of Ill-Conditioned Banded Matrices For Parallel Computing, Qian Huang
Dissertations - ALL
Sequential and parallel algorithms based on the LU factorization or the QR factorization have been intensely studied and widely used in the problems of computation with large-scale ill-conditioned banded matrices. Great concerns on existing methods include ill-conditioning, sparsity of factor matrices, computational complexity, and scalability. In this dissertation, we study a sparse orthogonal factorization of a banded matrix motivated by parallel computing. Specifically, we develop a process to factorize a banded matrix as a product of a sparse orthogonal matrix and a sparse matrix which can be transformed to an upper triangular matrix by column permutations. We prove that the …
Efficient Implementation Of Stochastic Inference On Heterogeneous Clusters And Spiking Neural Networks, Khadeer Ahmed
Efficient Implementation Of Stochastic Inference On Heterogeneous Clusters And Spiking Neural Networks, Khadeer Ahmed
Dissertations - ALL
Neuromorphic computing refers to brain inspired algorithms and architectures. This paradigm of computing can solve complex problems which were not possible with traditional computing methods. This is because such implementations learn to identify the required features and classify them based on its training, akin to how brains function. This task involves performing computation on large quantities of data. With this inspiration, a comprehensive multi-pronged approach is employed to study and efficiently implement neuromorphic inference model using heterogeneous clusters to address the problem using traditional Von Neumann architectures and by developing spiking neural networks (SNN) for native and ultra-low power implementation. …
Interaction Effects Between The Cumulative Genetic Score And Psychosocial Stressor On Drinking Urge And Attentional Bias For Alcohol: A Human Laboratory Study, Jueun Kim
Dissertations - ALL
Stressful life events have been positively associated with alcohol use and misuse in young adults; however, individual differences in the association suggest the presence of moderators. Findings from observational studies suggest that the effects of stressful environments on drinking behavior may differ as a function of diverse single monoamine genes regulating serotonin and dopamine neurotransmission. However, research has not utilized an experimental design to examine whether the monoamine genes collectively are associated with the degree to which exposure to stressors affects alcohol endophenotypes. The current study examined whether the effects of an experimentally manipulated psychosocial stressor on drinking urge and …

Opiate addiction is now a major public health problem. Perinatal insults and exposure to opiates such as morphine in utero are well known to affect development of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis of the offspring adversely and are associated with a higher risk of developing neurobehavioral problems. Oxycodone is now one of the most frequently abused pain killers during pregnancy; however, limited data are available regarding whether and how perinatal oxycodone exposure (POE) alters neurobehavioral outcomes of the offspring. We demonstrated that exposure to 0.5 mg/kg/day oxycodone in utero was associated with hyperactivity in adult rats in an open field. No significant …
Allrecovery – Mobile App For Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Education, Yao Jia Zhang
Allrecovery – Mobile App For Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Education, Yao Jia Zhang
Theses
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a cancer of the bone marrow. Lymphoblasts are unable to mature due to errors in signaling leading to an accumulation of non-functioning lymphoblasts. ALL is one of the most common cancers found in children; with an estimated 6590 new cases in the United States in 2016 (seer.cancer.gov, 2016). When a family finds out that their child has been diagnosed with cancer, it could be a shocking and terrifying experience. Understanding and learning about the nature of the disease can be a helpful method to cope with the fear and anxiety. ALLRecovery is created to present …
Life’S Late Digital Revolution And Why It Matters For The Study Of The Origins Of Life, David A. Baum, Niles Lehman
Life’S Late Digital Revolution And Why It Matters For The Study Of The Origins Of Life, David A. Baum, Niles Lehman
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
The information contained in life exists in two forms, analog and digital. Analog information is manifest mainly in the differing concentrations of chemicals that get passed from generation to generation and can vary from cell to cell. Digital information is encoded in linear polymers such as DNA and RNA, whose side chains come in discrete chemical forms. Here, we argue that the analog form of information preceded the digital. Acceptance of this dichotomy, and this progression, can help direct future studies on how life originated and initially complexified on the primordial Earth, as well as expected trajectories for other, independent …

Euscorpius
The scorpion fauna of the small Mona Island (= Isla de Mona), located roughly midway between Hispaniola and Puerto Rico and administratively belonging to the latter, is herein revised. Three species are confirmed to occur: the buthids Centruroides bani Armas et Marcano Fondeur, 1987 and Heteroctenus abudi (Armas et Marcano Fondeur, 1987), plus the diplocentrine scorpionid Cazierius garridoi Armas, 2005. The previously recorded Heteronebo sp. is reexamined and deemed a mislabeled specimen of Heteronebo portoricensis Francke, 1978 from adjacent Puerto Rico. Also, Centruroides mariaorum Santiago-Blay, 2009 is demonstrated to be a junior synonym of C. bani (implying the first demonstrable …

Butyltin Compounds Alter Secretion Of Interleukin 6 From Human Immune Cells, Shyretha Brown, Wendy Wilburn, Tyesha Martin, Margaret Whalen
Chemistry Faculty Research
Butyltins (BTs), tributyltin (TBT) and dibutyltin (DBT) are organotin compounds that have been used in a variety of industrial applications; as a result, these compounds have been found in human blood. Interleukin (IL)-6 is a proinflammatory mediator that is produced by T lymphocytes and monocytes. It is responsible for immune response regulation as well as tissue repair and cellular growth. Both BTs decrease the ability of human natural killer cells to destroy tumor cells and alter the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor alpha, interferon gamma and IL-1 beta (β) from human lymphocytes ex vivo. Here, we show that …

Cis-regulatory elements (CREs) are commonly recognized by correlative chromatin features, yet the molecular composition of the vast majority of CREs in chromatin remains unknown. Here, we describe a CRISPR affinity purification in situ of regulatory elements (CAPTURE) approach to unbiasedly identify locus-specific chromatin-regulating protein complexes and long-range DNA interactions. Using an in vivo biotinylated nuclease-deficient Cas9 protein and sequence-specific guide RNAs, we show high-resolution and selective isolation of chromatin interactions at a single-copy genomic locus. Purification of human telomeres using CAPTURE identifies known and new telomeric factors. In situ capture of individual constituents of the enhancer cluster controlling human β-globin …

The Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) represents a cellular de-differentiation process that provides cells with the increased plasticity required during embryonic development, tissue remodeling, wound healing and metastasis. Slug and Twist are two key EMT transcription factors (EMT-TFs) that are tightly regulated via ubiquitination and degradation. How Slug and Twist escape degradation and become stabilized in cancer cells remains unclear. One plausible mechanism of Slug and Twist stabilization involves removal of ubiquitin by deubiquitinases (DUBs). In this study, we identified Dub3 as a novel DUB for both Slug and Twist. We further found that Dub3 overexpression increased Slug and Twist protein levels …

Strategies For Improving Approximate Bayesian Computation Tests For Synchronous Diversification, Isaac Overcast, Justin C. Bagley, Michael J. Hickerson
Publications and Research
Background: Estimating the variability in isolation times across co-distributed taxon pairs that may have experienced the same allopatric isolating mechanism is a core goal of comparative phylogeography. The use of hierarchical Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) and coalescent models to infer temporal dynamics of lineage co-diversification has been a contentious topic in recent years. Key issues that remain unresolved include the choice of an appropriate prior on the number of co-divergence events (Ψ), as well as the optimal strategies for data summarization.
Methods: Through simulation-based cross validation we explore the impact of the strategy for sorting summary statistics and the choice …
