Chronic Plasmodium Brasilianum Infections In Wild Peruvian Tamarins, Gideon A. Erkenswick, Mrinalini Watsa, M. Andreína Pacheco, Ananias A. Escalante, Patricia G. Parker
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
There is an increased interest in potential zoonotic malarias. To date, Plasmodium malariae that infects humans remains indistinguishable from P. brasilianum, which is widespread among New World primates. Distributed throughout tropical Central and South America, the Callitrichidae are small arboreal primates in which detection of natural Plasmodium infection has been extremely rare. Most prior screening efforts have been limited to small samples, the use of low-probability detection methods, or both. Rarely have screening efforts implemented a longitudinal sampling design. Through an annual mark-recapture program of two sympatric callitrichids, the emperor (Saguinus imperator) and saddleback (S …
Rice Hull Bioreactor For Recirculating Aquaculture, Marlon A. Greensword
Rice Hull Bioreactor For Recirculating Aquaculture, Marlon A. Greensword
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The engineering of floating media biofilters has been optimized over the years. The backwashing process has made them more energy and water efficient. Likewise, moving bed bioreactors (MBBR) are gaining interest and popularity because they are relatively affordable to build. Yet, developing countries’ aquaculture production remains largely excluded from the advances made in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). This discrepancy is partially driven by the high costs of media such plastic beads and Kaldnes (KMT) media, commonly used in MBBR.
This dissertation evaluates the usability and profitability of rice hulls (RH), an abundant by-product in many developing nations, as a sinking …
Conflicting Evolutionary Histories Of The Mitochondrial And Nuclear Genomes In New World Myotis Bats, Thomas Lee Jr.
Conflicting Evolutionary Histories Of The Mitochondrial And Nuclear Genomes In New World Myotis Bats, Thomas Lee Jr.
Biology
The rapid diversification of Myotis bats into more than 100 species is one of the most extensive mammalian radiations available for study. Efforts to understand relationships within Myotis have primarily utilized mitochondrial markers and trees inferred fromnuclear markers lackedresolution. Our current understanding of relationships withinMyotis is therefore biased towards a set of phylogenetic markers that may not reflect the history of the nuclear genome. To resolve this,we sequenced the full mitochondrial genomes of 37 representativeMyotis, primarily fromtheNewWorld, in conjunction with targeted sequencing of 3648 ultraconserved elements (UCEs). We inferred the phylogeny and explored the effects of concatenation and summary phylogenetic …

Identification Of Hydrated And Dehydrated Lipids And Protein Secondary Structures In Seeds Of Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum) Line, Diwas Kumar Silwal, Nsoki Phambu, Bharat Pokharel, Ahmad Naseer Aziz
Chemistry Faculty Research
Cottonseeds from two parents (TM-1 and 3-79) and their 17 progeny (chromosomal substitution) lines were analyzed for various secondary structures of proteins and moisture content of lipids, separately in hulls and kernels. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used on mature seeds from Upland cotton (G. hirsutum) progeny lines and parents. Based on secondary structures of proteins and hydration levels of lipids, differences were observed among the cottonseeds. The two progeny lines – CS-B12sh and CS-B22sh retained lipid moisture content and protein secondary structures similar to both parents, while CS-B06, CS-B15sh and CS-B16 remained distinct from either parent. On the …

Engineered nanoparticles are aquatic contaminants of emerging concern that exert ecotoxicological effects on a wide variety of organisms. We exposed cetyltrimethylammonium bromide–capped spherical gold nanoparticles to wood frog and bullfrog tadpoles with conspecifics and in combination with the other species continuously for 21 d, then measured uptake and localization of gold. Wood frog tadpoles alone and in combination with bullfrog tadpoles took up significantly more gold than bullfrogs. Bullfrog tadpoles in combination with wood frogs took up significantly more gold than controls. The rank order of weight-normalized gold uptake was wood frogs in combination > wood frogs alone > bullfrogs in combination …

Current Prospects Of Type Ii Interferon Γ Signaling & Autoimmunity, Daniel S. Green, Howard A. Young, Julio C. Valencia
Current Prospects Of Type Ii Interferon Γ Signaling & Autoimmunity, Daniel S. Green, Howard A. Young, Julio C. Valencia
United States Public Health Resources
Interferon γ (IFNγ) is a pleiotropic protein secreted by immune cells. IFNγ signals through the IFNγ receptor, a protein complex that mediates downstream signaling events. Studies into IFNγ signaling have provided insight into the general concepts of receptor signaling, receptor internalization, regulation of distinct signaling pathways, and transcriptional regulation. Although IFNγ is the central mediator of the adaptive immune response to pathogens, it has been shown to be involved in several non-infectious physiological processes. This review will provide an introduction into IFNγ signaling biology and the functional roles of IFNγ in the autoimmune response.

White-Nose Syndrome Fungus, Pseudogymnoascus Destructans, On Bats Captured Emerging From Caves During Winter In The Southeastern United States, Riley F. Bernard, Emma V. Willcox, Katy L. Parise
KIP Articles
Background: Emerging infectious diseases in wildlife are an increasing threat to global biodiversity. White-nose syndrome (WNS) in bats is one of the most recently emerged infectious diseases in North America, causing massive declines in eastern bat populations. In the Northeast, winter behavior of bats during the hibernation period, such as flying during the day or in cold weather, has been attributed to WNS. However, winter emergence of bats in the southeastern United States, where winters are warmer, has received little attention. The goals of this study were to determine if winter emergence results from infection by Pseudogymnoascus destructans, the causative …

Funding Science With Science: Cryptocurrency And Independent Academic Research Funding, Edward Lehner, Dylan Hunzeker, John R. Ziegler
Publications and Research
Scientific funding within the academy is an often complicated affair involving disparate and competing interests. Private universities, for instance, are vastly outpacing public institutions in garnering large, prestigious grants. Inequities also extend to the kinds of research funded, with government, corporate, and even military interests privileging certain types of inquiry. This work proposes an innovative type of research fund using cryptocurrencies, a fast-growing asset class. Although not a total funding solution, staking coins, specifically, can be strategically invested in to yield compound interest. These coins use masternode technologies to collateralize the network and speed transaction pace. Additionally, these staking coins …

A Fourth Account Of Centipede (Chilopoda) Predation On Bats, T. Todd Lindley, Jesús Molinari, Rowland M. Shelley, Barry N. Steger
Insecta Mundi
With an incident in Palo Duro Canyon, Texas, USA, Scolopendra heros Girard (Chilopoda: Scolopendromorpha: Scolopendridae) becomes the third centipede species known to prey on bats; S. gigantea Linnaeus and S. viridicornis Newport have been so documented in Venezuela and Brazil, respectively. The Texas predation was interrupted by the predator/prey pair’s falling around 15–20 m from the canyon wall and, perhaps also, by human presence where they landed. The centipede uncoiled and retreated to shelter under a nearby rock and, after initial immobilization, so did the bat.

Classification, Natural History, And Evolution Of The Subfamily Peloniinae Opitz (Coleoptera: Cleroidea: Cleridae). Part Viii. Systematics Of The Checkered Beetle Genus Chariessa Perty, Weston Opitz
Insecta Mundi
The New World genus Chariessa Forster (Coleoptera: Cleroidea: Cleridae) is revised and includes C. catalina Opitz, new species, C. elegans Horn, C. dichroa (LeConte), C. floridana Schaeffer, C. pilosa (Forster), C. texana Wolcott, C. ramicornis Perty, C. vestita (Chevrolat), and C. duponti (Spinola). Enoplium pilosa var. marginata Say is synonymized with Chariessa pilosa Forster. Lectotypes are designated for C. pilosa (Forster), C. ramicornis Perty, and C. vestita (Chevrolat). Available information indicates that Chariessa adult and immature individuals are predatory on lignicolous insects with a particular affinity for cerambycids and buprestids that infest species of oak. It is postulated …

A Contribution On The Neglected Milliped Genus Apheloria Chamberlin 1921 (Diplopoda: Polydesmida: Xystodesmidae/-Inae: Apheloriini): Neotype Designation And Description Of Julus Virginiensis Drury 1770., Rowland M. Shelley, Gary Phillips, Jamie M. Smith
Insecta Mundi
A trimaculate male of the diplopod genus Apheloria Chamberlin (Polydesmida: Xystodesmidae/-inae: Apheloriini) from 1.3 km (0.8 mi) west of McKenney, Dinwiddie County (Co.), Virginia, is designated the Neotype of Julus virginiensis Drury 1770, thereby stabilizing the earliest name for a North American milliped and authenticating its prior assignment to this taxon. The existing concept of Apheloria is accepted in the absence of a revisionary treatment, and a modern description of A. v. virginiensis with gonopod drawings and color photos is provided. Drury’s original account and his letter to the Virginian who sent him the original specimens are quoted verbatim to …

How Can We Enhance Elderly Health And Well-Being Through Various Forms Of Game-Based Activities?, Shaojia Chen
Theses - ALL
The health of an aging population is gradually turning into a topic of focus not only domestically but also internationally. The target group of this study is older Americans who are 65 and older. More specifically, elders who lack the motivation to exercise. Currently, related research has shown regular physical exercise is critical for elders to keep fit. However, participating in regular exercise can be challenging for older adults with physical limitations, and it’s often difficult to motivate oneself. There has been an expanded focus on the game design intended to motivate elders to contribute to their overall well-being.Through qualitative …

© 2017 The Author(s). Background: Imprinted domains have been identified as targets for aberrant DNA methylation during carcinogenesis, but it remains unclear when these epigenetic alterations occur and how they contribute to tumor progression. Epigenetic instability at key cis-regulatory elements within imprinted domains can concomitantly activate proto-oncogenes and turn off tumor suppressor genes. Thus, to further characterize the epigenetic response of imprinted domains during carcinogenesis, we compared the stability of DNA methylation at a variety of cis-regulatory elements within imprinted domains in two fundamentally different mouse tumors, benign and malignant, induced by the KrasG12D mutation. Results: We report that imprinted …
