Altered Sensitivity To Social Gaze In The Fmr1 Premutation And Pragmatic Language Competence, Jessica Klusek, Joseph Schmidt, Amanda J. Fairchild, Ann Porter, Jane E. Roberts

Faculty Publications

Background: The FMR1 premutation affects 1:291 women and is associated with a range of cognitive, affective, and physical health complications, including deficits in pragmatic language (i.e., social language). This study investigated attention to eye gaze as a fundamental social-cognitive skill that may be impaired in the FMR1 premutation and could underlie pragmatic deficits. Given the high prevalence of the FMR1 premutation, efforts to define its phenotype and mechanistic underpinnings have significant public health implications. Methods: Thirty-five women with the FMR1 premutation and 20 control women completed an eye-tracking paradigm that recorded time spent dwelling within the eye region in response …

Faithful translation of mRNA into the corresponding polypeptide is a complex multistep process, requiring accurate amino acid selection, transfer RNA (tRNA) charging and mRNA decoding on the ribosome. Key players in this process are aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRSs), which not only catalyse the attachment of cognate amino acids to their respective tRNAs, but also selectively hydrolyse incorrectly activated non-cognate amino acids and/or misaminoacylated tRNAs. This aaRS proofreading provides quality control checkpoints that exclude non-cognate amino acids during translation, and in so doing helps to prevent the formation of an aberrant proteome. However, despite the intrinsic need for high accuracy during translation, …

Neurologic disorders are characterized by abnormal cellular-, molecular-, and circuit-level functions in the brain. New methods to induce and control neuroplastic processes and correct abnormal function, or even shift functions from damaged tissue to physiologically healthy brain regions, hold the potential to dramatically improve overall health. Of the current neuroplastic interventions in development, neurofeedback training (NFT) from functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) has the advantages of being completely non-invasive, non-pharmacologic, and spatially localized to target brain regions, as well as having no known side effects. Furthermore, NFT techniques, initially developed using fMRI, can often be translated to exercises that can …

Grain weight is one of the most important yield components and a developmentally complex structure comprised of two major compartments (endosperm and pericarp) in maize (Zea mays L.), however, very little is known concerning the coordinated accumulation of the numerous proteins involved. Herein, we used isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ)-based comparative proteomic method to analyze the characteristics of dynamic proteomics for endosperm and pericarp during grain development. Totally, 9539 proteins were identified for both components at four development stages, among which 1401 proteins were non-redundant, 232 proteins were specific in pericarp and 153 proteins were specific in …

Although the newly developed second-generation anti-androgen drug enzalutamide can repress prostate cancer progression significantly, it only extends the survival of prostate cancer patients by 4-6 months mainly due to the occurrence of enzalutamide resistance. Most of the previous studies on AR antagonist resistance have been focused on AR signaling. Therefore, the non-AR pathways on enzalutamide resistance remain largely unknown. By using C4-2, CWR22Rv1 and LNCaP cell lines, as well as mice bearing CWR22Rv1 xenografts treated with either enzalutamide or metformin alone or in combination, we demonstrated that metformin is capable of reversing enzalutamide resistance and restores sensitivity of CWR22Rv1 xenografts …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Quantitative analysis of neuronal morphology is critical in cell type classification and for deciphering how structure gives rise to function in the brain. Most current approaches to imaging and tracing neuronal 3D morphology are data intensive. We introduce SmartScope2, the first open source, automated neuron reconstruction machine integrating online image analysis with automated multiphoton imaging. SmartScope2 takes advantage of a neuron's sparse morphology to improve imaging speed and reduce image data stored, transferred and analyzed. We show that SmartScope2 is able to produce the complex 3D morphology of human and mouse cortical neurons with six-fold reduction in image data requirements …

Impacts Of New England Oyster Aquaculture On Sediment Nitrogen Cycling: Implications For Nitrogen Removal And Retention, Amanda Marie Vieillard Aug 2017

Impacts Of New England Oyster Aquaculture On Sediment Nitrogen Cycling: Implications For Nitrogen Removal And Retention, Amanda Marie Vieillard

Master's Theses

In this three-year, seasonal study of sediment nitrogen (N) biogeochemistry, we used stable isotope techniques to measure the N cycling reactions nitrification, denitrification (DNF), and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). Rates were compared to dissolved inorganic nitrogen exchanges between the sediment and overlying water to assess denitrification efficiency (DE). All measurements were performed on sediments underlying (oyster) and removed from (control) oyster aquaculture in two oyster farms in the Northeast, USA.

Overall, DNF was small relative to release of DIN from sediment to the overlying water. Based on DE, both sites were found to favor N recycling over N …

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a diverse group of malignant clonal hematopoietic stem cell disorders characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis, dysplastic cell morphology in one or more hematopoietic lineages, and a risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Approximately 50% of MDS patients respond to current FDA-approved drug therapies but a majority of responders relapse within 2-3 years. There is therefore a compelling need to identify potential new therapies for MDS treatment. We utilized the MDS-L cell line to investigate the anticancer potential and mechanisms of action of a plant-derived compound, Withaferin A (WFA), in MDS. WFA was potently cytotoxic to …

Synthesis Of Alpha-Galcer Analogues As Inkt-Cell Agonists And Reactions Of 2-Methyleneoxetanes, Donald Raymond Caldwell Aug 2017

Synthesis Of Alpha-Galcer Analogues As Inkt-Cell Agonists And Reactions Of 2-Methyleneoxetanes, Donald Raymond Caldwell

Doctoral Dissertations

Glycolipids, particularly a-galactosylceramides, have gained considerable attention due to their ability to modulate immune responses. The discovery of a synthetic glycolipid antigen, KRN7000, has enhanced our understanding of iNKT cell function. Since KRN7000 stimulates iNKT cells to release both Th1 and Th2 cytokines in relative amounts at which the biological activity of either one is antagonized by the other, tremendous effort has been devoted toward synthesizing analogues of KRN7000 that bias cytokine release, as such targets may offer new approaches to treating viral infections, bacterial infections, cancer, and autoimmune conditions. The first part of this proposal describes the synthesis of …

Analyzing Riparian Zone Ecosystem Services Bundles To Instruct River Management, Looy K Van, Thierry Tormos, Yves Souchon, David Gilvear Aug 2017

Analyzing Riparian Zone Ecosystem Services Bundles To Instruct River Management, Looy K Van, Thierry Tormos, Yves Souchon, David Gilvear

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The ecosystem service framework is now well accepted for focussing management strategies to preserve and restore ecosystems. Its implementation remains challenging, however, due to the environment’s complexity and dynamics that interfere with ecosystems’ ability to provide the services. Here, we question whether we can show where and how to intervene in riparian corridors to restore specific ecosystem services without endangering others. Specific hypotheses in this context are for the spatial aggregation of ecosystem services delivered by riparian corridors with respect to naturalness (1), to the existence of bundles of ecosystem services (2), and finally for the scale sensitivity of this …

Towards Accurate Automated Mri Based R2* Measurements Of Hepatic Iron Content, Aaryani Sajja Aug 2017

Towards Accurate Automated Mri Based R2* Measurements Of Hepatic Iron Content, Aaryani Sajja

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Hepatic iron overload is a severe complication in patients receiving chronic blood transfusions for sickle cell disease, beta-thalassemia, and myelosuppression during chemotherapy. Accurate assessment of hepatic iron content (HIC) is thus paramount to quantify excessive iron accumulation and to monitor response to iron removal treatment. Needle biopsies are considered the reference standard to measure HIC. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods based on the effective transverse relaxation rate (R2*) have become a noninvasive alternative to measure HIC. R2* estimation typically involves 3 major steps - acquiring multiecho gradient echo (GRE) images of the liver under breath-hold, fitting a mono-exponential signal model …

Life Begins, Yuju Yen

Theses

My work reveals the world I see, the world I feel, and the world I imagine. The story I want to tell in my thesis is about every stunning moment when a life begins. While the sculptures and jewelry in my thesis body of work differ in scale, they are all singing the same theme: when a life starts to grow and when a flower blooms.

The forms of my thesis work are inspired from various natural lives, such as virus, fungi, jellyfish, bacteria, blooming flowers, and sea creatures. They are vividly waving, rotating, spinning their tentacles, antennas, and microfibers …

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(5): 807-817, 2017. Understanding factors that contribute to a student’s selection of an exercise science-related major is important to student success, higher education and industry. This study sought to 1) better understand why undergraduate students study an exercise science-related major, 2) determine whether positive influences to study an exercise science-related major differ by academic classification, and 3) identify what student’s aspirations are after graduation. Department administrators from four-year colleges and universities offering an exercise science-related major in the Northwest Region of the United States (i.e., Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington) were contacted. Cooperating department administrators …

The Life Cycle Relative To Temperature Of Protaphorura Armatus (Tullberg) (Collembola: Onychiuridae), A Parathenogenetic Species, Renate M. Snider Aug 2017

The Life Cycle Relative To Temperature Of Protaphorura Armatus (Tullberg) (Collembola: Onychiuridae), A Parathenogenetic Species, Renate M. Snider

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Apparent parthenogenetic reproduction in Collembola has sometimes been attributed to accidental transfer of spermatophores with the food material from one culture to another (Schaller, 1953; Mayer, 1957). Conclusive evidence of parthenogenesis has only in recent years been accumulated for a number of species of Collembola, of which some were found in field populations consisting entirely of females (Choudhuri, 1958; Huther, 1961; Marshall and Kevan, 1962; Petersen, 1965; 1971 ; Snider, 1973). In Onychiuridae, parthenogenesis is apparently quite common. Onychiurus parthenogeneticus Choudhuri and Tullbergia krausbaueri (Bomer) undoubtedly reproduce in the absence of males (Choudhuri, 1958; Hale, 1966; Petersen, 1971); so does …

Ovacarus Peellei, A Nre Species Of Mite (Acarina: Podapolipidae) Associated With The Carabid Pasimachus Elongatus, Robert W. Husband

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Recently, a new genus and species of rnite was discovered in association with the vaginal membrane or aedeagus of Clivina impressifrons, a pest which damages corn seed and seedlings in the midwest (Stannard and Vaishampyan 1971). This mite, Ovacarus clivinae, was described as a monotypic species of the genus Ovacarus. In the process of examining another midwestern carabid beetle, Pasimachus elongatus LeConte, an undescribed species of Ovacarus was discovered. Larviform females were found near the external genitalia. All stages were found associated with oviducts and vaginal membranes, in a manner similar to that described by Stannard and …

Some Observations On The Nature Of Insect Names, B. Elwood Montgomery Aug 2017

Some Observations On The Nature Of Insect Names, B. Elwood Montgomery

The Great Lakes Entomologist

A recent study of dragonfly names (Montgomery, 1973) has led to a consideration of insect names, especially ancient and early English names. This interest was aroused, chiefly by the statement in Sarot's study of the folklore of the dragonfly from "A Linguistic Approach" that no recognizable name for dragonflies has been found in Anglo-Saxon, classical Latin or ancient Greek. Any language is capable of supplying names for all objects, including insects, which are recognized by its community of speakers. As so many names for dragonflies have been found in modern languages, (95 in English, over 60 in German, about 40 …

Termite Distribution In Michigan, Etdon A. Behr Aug 2017

Termite Distribution In Michigan, Etdon A. Behr

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Subterranean termites have been present in Michigan for a long time. They were reported as being destructive to buildings in 1920 (Anonymous, 1961), and apparently damage done at that time was increasing over what had occurred earlier. Notwithstanding this long time presence of termites in the state a majority of the population still looks upon the termite as a strange insect most likely to be encountered in the South. All too many home owners and building proprietors as well as others are unacquainted with presence of termites in their areas. At the same time monetary loss due to termite attack …

The Life History Of Folsomia Candida (Willem) (Collembola: Isotomidae) Relative To Temperature, Renate M. Snider, James W. Butcher Aug 2017

The Life History Of Folsomia Candida (Willem) (Collembola: Isotomidae) Relative To Temperature, Renate M. Snider, James W. Butcher

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The parthenogenetic mode of reproduction in Collembola, although frequently questioned in the past (Schaller, 1953; Mayer, 1957; Falkenhan, 1932), has only recently been recorded and confirmed for several species; Onychiutus parthenogeneticus Choudhuri (Choudhuri, 1958), Folsomia candida (Willem) (Goto, 1960; Marshall and Kevan, 1962; Green, 1964; Husson and Paldvody, 1967), Folsomia cavicola Cassagnau and Delamare (Goto, 1960), Tullbergia krausbaueri (Bomer) (Hale, 1966; Petersen, 1971), and Isotoma notabilis Schaffer (Petersen, 1971).

Sex-ratios in populations of the above cited species are often unknown. Existing data indicate that the composition of a population may vary with the geographical distribution of the species. Populations of …

A Milliped New To Michigan (Pselaphognatha: Polyxenus), James R. Brice, Michael T. Barbour Aug 2017

A Milliped New To Michigan (Pselaphognatha: Polyxenus), James R. Brice, Michael T. Barbour

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The authors wish to report the finding of representatives of the genus Polyxenus for the first time in Michigan (Fig. 1). In Bert M. Johnson's survey (1954) of the millipedes of Michigan, no members of the subclass Pselaphognatha were reported.

During the period of September through October 1970, the authors collected over 40 specimens of Polyxenus and observed over 100 in the field. All of the specimens were found in a mature pine stand in Ypsilanti Township.

An Annotated List Of The Cerambycidae Of Michigan (Coleoptera) Part I, Introduction And The Subfamilies Parandrinae, Prioninae, Spondylinae, Aseminae, And Cerambycinae, D. C.L. Gosling Aug 2017

An Annotated List Of The Cerambycidae Of Michigan (Coleoptera) Part I, Introduction And The Subfamilies Parandrinae, Prioninae, Spondylinae, Aseminae, And Cerambycinae, D. C.L. Gosling

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The Cerambycidae are generally acknowledged as one of the most popular families of Coleoptera, and it is not surprising that they have been collected widely in Michigan. Andrews (1916, 1921, 1929), Hatch (1924), Hubbard and Schwarz (1878), and Wickham (1895), included Cerambycidae in published lists of insects from various localities in the state. The present list, however, is the first to include records of collections made throughout Michigan. Some regions of the state have been rather thoroughly collected, particularly the southeastern counties. Collecting throughout Michigan has been sufficient to consider this list as essentially complete, although continued studies in the …

Definition Of The Subfamily Hedobiinae Based On Larval Characteristics (Coleoptera: Anobiidae), Manuel G. De Viedma

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Recently, Espanol (1968, 1970) redefined the subfamily Hedobiinae and, using the anatomy of adults, presented a key to separate the eight genera which form it. He also introduced some notable modifications, among them the inclusion of Ptilineurus and Clada in the subfamily and the elevation of Ptinomorphus Mulsant and Rey to generic rank. The latter genus includes, among others, the species P. imperialis Linnaeus and regalis Duftschmid, from Europe and P. granosus LeConte and angularus Fall from the United States of America.

The Morphology And Histology Of New Sex Pheremone Glands In Male Scorpionflies, Panorpa And Brachypanorpa (Mecoptera: Panorpidae And Panorpodidae), Albert R. Thornhill Aug 2017

The Morphology And Histology Of New Sex Pheremone Glands In Male Scorpionflies, Panorpa And Brachypanorpa (Mecoptera: Panorpidae And Panorpodidae), Albert R. Thornhill

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The n~orphology and histology of a previously undescribed sex pheromone gland in male scorpionflies of the genus Panorpa (Mecoptera: Panorpidae) and a morphologically similar gland in Brachypanorpa (Mecoptera: Panorpodidae) are described and discussed. The gland and the associated pheromone dispersing structure consist of an eversible pouch that lies in the ventral part of the male genital bulb at the point where the basistyles diverge. The glandular layer of epithelium is composed of three types of cells that vary in size between species of Panorpa and between Panorpa and Brachyponorpa. It is suggested that the gland may have evolved from …

Moth Species New To Michigan, John H. Newman, Mogens C. Nielsen Aug 2017

Moth Species New To Michigan, John H. Newman, Mogens C. Nielsen

The Great Lakes Entomologist

This is a compilation of moth species previously unrecorded from Michigan. Moore's (1955) publication has been critically examined necessitating some specific changes. All questionable material has been determined by present day specialists in their particular fields. The McDunnough (1938) checklist is followed in the arrangement of the new data together with most of the recent changes in nomenclature as presented by Forbes (1948, 1954, 1960), Hardwick (1970), Hodges (1971), and Covell (1970, 1971). With the advent of more sophisticated collecting equipment and the easier access to Michigan's Upper Peninsula a total of 154 species has been added. Many institutional and …

Perlodidae (Plecoptera) Of Wisconsin, William L. Hilsenhoff, Steven J. Billmyer Aug 2017

Perlodidae (Plecoptera) Of Wisconsin, William L. Hilsenhoff, Steven J. Billmyer

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The family Perlodidae is one of the most abundant and widespread in the order Plecoptera. These stoneflies occur in a wide variety of clean-water habitats and as indicator organisms have potential for assessing water quality. Studies of this family in Wisconsin prior to 1965 were limited to occasional collections reported by Needham and Claassen (1925) and Frison (1935, 1937, 1942). In 1965 and 1966 a survey of the Wisconsin River and its tributaries yielded nymphs of 11 species of Isoperla (W. Hisenhoff, unpublished report), and later, nymphs and adults of 9 species were found in the Pine-Popple River (Hilsenhoff and …

International Journal of Speleology

Caves have been an important source of vertebrate fossils for much of Southeast Asia, particularly for the Quaternary. Despite this importance, the mechanisms by which vertebrate remains accumulate and preserve in Southeast Asian caves has never been systematically reviewed or examined. Here, we present the results of three years of cave surveys in Indonesia and Timor-Leste, describing cave systems and their attendant vertebrate accumulations in diverse geological, biogeographical, and environmental settings. While each cave system is unique, we find that the accumulation and preservation of vertebrate remains are highly dependent on local geology and environment. These factors notwithstanding, we find …
