Relational Savoring Among Intimate Partners Of Cancer Patients, Adrianna Elyse Holness Sep 2017

Relational Savoring Among Intimate Partners Of Cancer Patients, Adrianna Elyse Holness

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Research suggests that intimate partners of cancer patients experience similar, if not higher, levels of distress and depression than the patient with regards to the cancer diagnosis. This stress can impact the quality of the relationship and the subsequent care and attention given to cancer patients. As such, identifying factors that can enhance marital relationships during times of illness is key. This project was created in order to assess the efficacy of a brief, portable intervention for improving relational quality among the intimate partners of cancer patients. In this project, we examine the effects of relational savoring, relative to two …

The Effects Of Seizure Modeling And Polyphenols On Behavior In Bang-Sensitive Drosophila, Alphonso A. Smith Sep 2017

The Effects Of Seizure Modeling And Polyphenols On Behavior In Bang-Sensitive Drosophila, Alphonso A. Smith

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Epilepsy is a worldwide public health concern associated with debilitating neurological, cognitive, and psychosocial consequences. Current antiepileptic drugs can have debilitating side effects and new treatments are needed for individuals with pharmaco-resistant seizures like those observed in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Ellagic acid (EA), a polyphenol present in several fruits and nuts, has shown beneficial effects in rodent models of epilepsy and anxiety, possibly mediated through GABAergic pathways. Bang-Sensitive Drosophila mutants model epileptic seizures following mechanical shock and provide a high-throughput alternative to costly rodent studies. The objectives of this study were to: 1) examine the effectiveness of seizure modeling …

Effect Of Extracellular Survivin And Lymphoma Exosomes On Natural Killer Cells, Heather R. Ferguson Bennit Sep 2017

Effect Of Extracellular Survivin And Lymphoma Exosomes On Natural Killer Cells, Heather R. Ferguson Bennit

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Tumors alter their microenvironment to promote survival using methods such as angiogenesis promotion, growth signals, and immune suppression. The immune system becomes unresponsive to transformed neoplastic cells through a variety of methods including T cell suppression, increased myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), and reduced natural killer (NK) cell activity. NK cells have inherent killing capabilities and thus are among the first responders in recognizing and destroying abnormal cells. However, many types of cancers inhibit the surveillance and cytotoxic abilities of NK cells by releasing exosomes, vesicles that can modulate the tumor microenvironment (TME) and intercellular communication for the purpose of enhancing …

The Effect Of Language On Cognition In An Acculturated American Sample Of Healthy Older Adults, K'Dee D. Elsen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background: Older adults are not only the fastest growing segment of the population (~841 million worldwide) and continually increasing, but are of special concern due to the numerous age-associated deficits, especially those on cognition. Research indicates that knowing multiple languages may act as a protective factor against the deleterious effects of cognitive aging. Objective: The purpose of the current study is to examine whether multilingualism protects against the effects of cognitive aging on the domains of executive functioning, linguistic processing, attention, memory, and visuospatial functioning. Methods: Participants were 312 healthy older adults (68% female) from the Walnuts and Healthy Aging …

Conduction Plus Convection Heat Flow Modeling For The Linga Complex, Peruvian Coastal Batholith, Luciano Uriel González Olivares Sep 2017

Conduction Plus Convection Heat Flow Modeling For The Linga Complex, Peruvian Coastal Batholith, Luciano Uriel González Olivares

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Factors affecting the thermal evolution of the Linga magmatic intrusion in the Ica-Pisco area of the Peruvian Coastal Batholith were studied using field work, petrography, geochemistry data, and computer modeling. Field work and petrography involved collecting samples for geochemical analysis and documenting widespread propylitic and potassic hydrothermal alteration. Major element geochemistry was used to estimate rock density, viscosity, liquidus temperature, and water content. The δ18O values of seven fresh samples showed a slightly increasing west-east and old-young trend of approximately 7-8‰, indicating an increasing crustal component. The δ18O and δD values for eleven altered samples indicated that alteration came mostly …

Prediction Of Root Form Using Crown Data: Mandibular Left First Premolar, Matthew E. Durschlag Sep 2017

Prediction Of Root Form Using Crown Data: Mandibular Left First Premolar, Matthew E. Durschlag

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to determine if a statistical shape model (SSM) of the lower left first premolar, consisting of both crown and root data, could adequately describe the root form from a surface scan consisting of only crown data. Secondly, it tested if there were any angles or measurements on the tooth crown that correlate with any aspects of root morphology. The average orthodontist practicing today or in the near future is likely to use or own a digital intraoral scanner in their office. Yet optical scans only allow visualization of the crowns of teeth and …

The Role Of Vegf And Smooth Muscle Phenotype In Hypoxic Remodeling Of Ovine Carotid And Cerebral Arteries, Margaret C. Hubbell Sep 2017

The Role Of Vegf And Smooth Muscle Phenotype In Hypoxic Remodeling Of Ovine Carotid And Cerebral Arteries, Margaret C. Hubbell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Arteries are a dynamic tissue with multiple cell types that incorporate systemic and local factors to maintain homeostasis. Hypoxia stimulates capillary angiogenesis to effectively match metabolic demand with perfusion. With chronic hypoxia, vascular remodeling of even large vessels can occur. This predisposes to pathologic states as seen with atherosclerosis, hypoxic brain injury, myocardial ischemia, diabetes, and developmental anomalies. With this remodeling comes changes in vessel structure including medial thickness and organization of contractile proteins as well as changes in myogenic tone. All of these factors culminate in changes in status or behavior of the vascular smooth muscle within the vessel …

The Effects Of Poverty And Allostatic Load On The Development Of Chronic Disease, Natali Do Sep 2017

The Effects Of Poverty And Allostatic Load On The Development Of Chronic Disease, Natali Do

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Research suggests that there is a significant impact of poverty on poor health outcomes. Poverty is associated with limited access to education and healthcare, increased exposure to violence, and chronic stress that contribute to the development of chronic diseases. The poverty and chronic disease relationship is potentially associated with chronically elevated stress biomarkers. The present study investigated the relationship between demographics, poverty (during childhood, young adulthood, and mid/late adulthood), allostatic load—a cumulative measure of system dysregulation—and the Charlson Comorbidity Index, a measure of chronic disease and mortality, using data from the Biopsychosocial and Religion and Health Study (BRHS; Lee et …

Parental Stress, Emotion Regulation, Meta-Emotion, And Changes Following An Mbsr Intervention, Yangmu Xu Sep 2017

Parental Stress, Emotion Regulation, Meta-Emotion, And Changes Following An Mbsr Intervention, Yangmu Xu

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Parents of children with developmental delays (DD) have consistently reported higher rates of parental stress (Dabrowska & Pisula, 2010; Oelofsen & Richardson, 2006). Difficulties with child emotion regulation are often exhibited among children with DD, and the relationship between parental stress and child emotion regulation may be bidirectional. Previous studies have found that underlying thoughts about parent’s own emotions is an important construct that has a direct impact on parental emotional wellbeing and child emotion regulation (Gottman et al., 1996). Furthermore, previous studies suggest that Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), an empirically supported stress-reduction intervention, is efficacious in reducing parenting stress …

Role Of Cultural And Psychological Factors Influencing Diabetes Treatment Adherence, Sonika Kravann Ung Sep 2017

Role Of Cultural And Psychological Factors Influencing Diabetes Treatment Adherence, Sonika Kravann Ung

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Chronic diseases are the leading causes of disability worldwide although health complications can be prevented with lifestyle change (CDC, 2013). Type 2 diabetes is a growing global epidemic, and its prevalence is predicted to increase from 6.4% (285 million adults) in 2010 to 7.7% (439 million adults) by 2030 (Shaw, Sicree, & Zimmet, 2010). Given the reality of cultural diversity in contemporary society, the aim of this study was to address the need for research that integrates both cultural and psychological factors with behaviors central to diabetes control among culturally diverse populations (Betancourt & López, 1993; Betancourt, Flynn, Riggs, & …

Photography And Catalogue Of Cutaneous Vascular Malformations Of Patients With Ccm1-Chm Cerebral Cavernous Malformations, Athanasios K. Manole Sep 2017

Photography And Catalogue Of Cutaneous Vascular Malformations Of Patients With Ccm1-Chm Cerebral Cavernous Malformations, Athanasios K. Manole

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Due to a genetic mutation, a rare and potentially fatal disease has spread throughout New Mexico. This disease, Familial Cerebral Cavernous Malformation (FCCM1-CHM), is due to a mutation that affects peoples of Hispanic heritage in New Mexico. The FCCM disease is characterized by the development of dilated, thin walled, leaky vessels that occur in the brain and spinal cord. As a result of this genetic mutation, the lesions in the blood vessels of the brain and spinal cord are highly susceptible to hemorrhaging into surrounding tissue. This can lead to headaches, seizure, and possibly death. Researchers at the University of …

Differential Response To Mosquito Host Sex And Parasite Dosage Suggest Mixed Dispersal Strategies In The Parasite Ascogregarina Taiwanensis, John Soghigian, Todd Livdahl Sep 2017

Differential Response To Mosquito Host Sex And Parasite Dosage Suggest Mixed Dispersal Strategies In The Parasite Ascogregarina Taiwanensis, John Soghigian, Todd Livdahl

Biology

Mixed dispersal strategies are a form of bet hedging in which a species or population utilizes different dispersal strategies dependent upon biotic or abiotic conditions. Here we provide an example of a mixed dispersal strategy in the Aedes albopictus / Ascogregarina taiwanensis host/parasite system, wherein upon host emergence, the gregarine parasite is either carried with an adult mosquito leaving the larval habitat, or released back into the larval habitat. We show that the parasite invests a larger proportion of its dispersing (oocyst) life stage into adult female mosquitoes as opposed to adult male mosquitoes at low parasite exposure levels. However, …

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) links the B-cell antigen receptor (BCR) and Toll-like receptors with NF-κB. The role of BTK in primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma (PCNSL) is unknown. We performed a phase I clinical trial with ibrutinib, the first-in-class BTK inhibitor, for patients with relapsed or refractory CNS lymphoma. Clinical responses to ibrutinib occurred in 10 of 13 (77%) patients with PCNSL, including five complete responses. The only PCNSL with complete ibrutinib resistance harbored a mutation within the coiled-coil domain of CARD11, a known ibrutinib resistance mechanism. Incomplete tumor responses were associated with mutations in the B-cell antigen receptor-associated …

Characterization Of Hydrophobic Interactions Of Polymers With Water And Phospholipid Membranes Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Mihaela Drenscko Sep 2017

Characterization Of Hydrophobic Interactions Of Polymers With Water And Phospholipid Membranes Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Mihaela Drenscko

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Polymers and lipid membranes are both essential soft materials. The structure and hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of polymers, as well as the solvent they are embedded in, ultimately determines their size and shape. Understating the variation of shape of the polymer as well as its interactions with model biological membranes can assist in understanding the biocompatibility of the polymer itself. Computer simulations, in particular molecular dynamics, can aid in characterization of the interaction of polymers with solvent, as well as polymers with model membranes. In this thesis, molecular dynamics serve to describe polymer interactions with a solvent (water) and with a lipid membrane. …

The Long-Term Consequences Of Child Abuse And Neglect In Men, Robert A. Beattey Jr. Sep 2017

The Long-Term Consequences Of Child Abuse And Neglect In Men, Robert A. Beattey Jr.

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Research indicates that the annual incidence of child maltreatment is around 10% and that more than one-quarter of children have, at least indirectly, experienced some form of violence. Prospective studies find that in high-income countries, like the United States, there are moderate correlations between childhood maltreatment and low educational achievement, low skilled employment, depression, suicide attempts, and alcohol problems, as well as strong correlations with obesity, behavior problems in childhood and adolescence, and criminal behavior. Despite the high costs of child abuse and neglect—both direct and indirect—and decades of research and public health, justice, and social service investment in prevention …

Aberrant Salience And Probabilistic Reasoning In Distressing Attenuated Positive Psychotic Symptoms: An Examination Of A Two Factor Model, Huw Green Sep 2017

Aberrant Salience And Probabilistic Reasoning In Distressing Attenuated Positive Psychotic Symptoms: An Examination Of A Two Factor Model, Huw Green

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Theoretical psychological models of positive psychotic symptoms have increasingly emphasized the interaction of multiple cognitive factors. Research into delusions in particular has focused on the interaction of two factors; a perceptual anomaly that gives rise to a need for explanation, and a bias toward premature acceptance of a hypothesis. Recently this two factor approach has been applied to positive psychotic symptoms more broadly. Two candidate factors have received extensive theoretical and empirical interest. The aberrant salience hypothesis posits that salience regulation, mediated by dopamine, goes awry in psychosis, giving rise to a generalized sense of undue significance that is applied …

An Examination Of The Needham Question: Why Didn't China Have A Scientific Revolution Considering Its Early Scientific Accomplishments?, Rebecca L. Olerich Sep 2017

An Examination Of The Needham Question: Why Didn't China Have A Scientific Revolution Considering Its Early Scientific Accomplishments?, Rebecca L. Olerich

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Joseph Needham (1900–1995) formulated several important queries about science and technology in China. Known as Needham’s “Grand Question” or “Puzzle,” he asked why modern science developed in Europe rather than in China, despite China’s advanced technology, and examined the inhibiting factors in Chinese civilization that prevented the rise of modern science by the seventeenth century. The question itself has prompted a variety of answers, all of which are partial. In this thesis, some of the complex social, cultural, political and economic factors that contributed to the Scientific Revolution in Europe will be discussed, as well as some of the key …

Vim Parat: Patterns Of Sexualized Violence, Victim-Blaming, And Sororophobia In Ovid, Melissa Marturano Sep 2017

Vim Parat: Patterns Of Sexualized Violence, Victim-Blaming, And Sororophobia In Ovid, Melissa Marturano

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

My dissertation argues for the importance of understanding the depiction of sexualized violence and rape in the Roman poet Ovid’s extensive corpus through the modern feminist concepts of victim-blaming (blaming victims of sexual abuse for their own abuse) and sororophobia (female figures participating in misogyny). It explores sexualized violence and rape in Ovid long-form, examines the discernible patterns that emerge and the deviations from them as he depicts that violence throughout his texts, and more importantly, introduces victim-blaming and sororophobia into an analysis of these patterns. Despite the fact that previous scholars have done substantial analyses of the patterns of …

Education Is Transformation: The Impact Of Attitudes, Robert Decaul Sep 2017

Education Is Transformation: The Impact Of Attitudes, Robert Decaul

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

What truly informs success? Is it one’s education, career type, and socioeconomic status? I believe that more than ever before these three criteria appear to define our understanding of what success is. However, the development and transformation of education in the United States, which is marred by racism, has historically disadvantaged segments of our population especially in cities with a predominantly black population. New Orleans being a perfect example. Hurricane Katrina put the spotlight on education in New Orleans as the storm’s devastation of the city exposed the myriad of problems education was facing. This thesis is an exploration of …

Mutagenesis Of Human Alpha-Galactosidase A For The Treatment Of Fabry Disease, Erin Stokes Sep 2017

Mutagenesis Of Human Alpha-Galactosidase A For The Treatment Of Fabry Disease, Erin Stokes

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Fabry disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder caused by the deficiency of the enzyme, α-galactosidase A, which results in the accumulation of the lipid substrate. This accumulation results in obstruction of blood flow in patients and early demise at approximately 40-60 years of age. There is currently only one FDA approved treatment (Fabrazyme) classified as an enzyme replacement therapy. However, approximately 88% of patients experience a severe immune response that, rarely, can be fatal and is a huge cost burden at average $250,000 a year per patient. The structure of α-galactosidase A has been previously determined to be a …

Modulation Of The Sodium/Potassium Atpase Function And Expression By Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Of The Right Sensorimotor Cortex In Mice, Salim Bendaoud Sep 2017

Modulation Of The Sodium/Potassium Atpase Function And Expression By Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Of The Right Sensorimotor Cortex In Mice, Salim Bendaoud

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Direct current stimulation is used as a noninvasive therapeutic technique to enhance motor recovery following stroke, and to improve cognitive functions. This technique also showed promising results in the treatment of depression, schizophrenia, and multiple sclerosis. Transcranial direct current stimulation has been proven to cause a polarization (depolarization or hyperpolarization) of the target tissues depending on the polarity of the current and cell orientation. Because of the induced polarization, the spontaneous activity of the neurons is further affected. With exception to this electrophysiological effect, the overall biological mechanisms of transcranial direct current stimulation on the underlying tissues remain largely unknown. …

Trump’S “America First” Trade Policy And The Politics Of U.S. International Investment Agreements, Jesse Liss Sep 2017

Trump’S “America First” Trade Policy And The Politics Of U.S. International Investment Agreements, Jesse Liss

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Previous sociological studies on U.S. trade policy institutions concluded that “free trade” political actors had durable power to determine U.S. trade policy. This conclusion was proven wrong when the Trump administration promised “a new direction” and to implement an “America First” trade policy. My dissertation serves to explain the U.S.’ political transition away from “free trade” and towards “nationalist” trade policy. I do this by examining the politics of U.S. international investment agreements, which are central to U.S. trade policy. As case studies, I use the investment agreements from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Trans-Pacific Partnership …

Culture And Mental Health: Considering The Role Of The Complex Cultural-History In Irish-American Population, Tiffinie Patricia Sesko Sep 2017

Culture And Mental Health: Considering The Role Of The Complex Cultural-History In Irish-American Population, Tiffinie Patricia Sesko

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study investigates the mental health of Irish immigrants and first generation Irish Americans. As the Irish-American population makes up such a large portion of the entire population of the United States, it is important we acknowledge its origin and take that into account where mental illness and treatment are concerned as the Irish culture has a pronounced effect on mental health. The intended audience of this review are expert and non-expert members of the clinical setting and community who may gain insight on helping a client or family member find a way to understand and express repressed feelings affectively. …

Walking As Ontological Shifter: Thoughts In The Key Of Life, Bibi (Silvina) Calderaro Sep 2017

Walking As Ontological Shifter: Thoughts In The Key Of Life, Bibi (Silvina) Calderaro

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

With walking as ontological shifter I pursue an alternative to the dominant modernist episteme that offers either/or onto-epistemologies of opposition and their reifying engagements. I propose this type of walking is an intentional turning towards a set of radical positions that, as integrative aesthetic and therapeutic practice, brings multiplicity and synchronicity to experience and being in an expanded sociality. This practice facilitates the conditions of possibility for recurring points of contact between the interiority perceived as ‘body’ and the exteriority perceived as ‘world.’ While making evident the self’s at once incoherence with it-self, it opens to a space beyond the …

Potential Modifications To Enzyme Replacement Therapy In Anderson-Fabry Disease, Mariam Meghdari Sep 2017

Potential Modifications To Enzyme Replacement Therapy In Anderson-Fabry Disease, Mariam Meghdari

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Mutations in the GLA gene that encodes the lysosomal enzyme α-galactosidase A (αGal) result in the sphingolipidoses named Fabry disease. This enzymatic defect is inherited as an X-linked recessive disorder and is associated with a progressive deposition of glycosphingolipids, including globotriaosylceramide (GB3), galabioasylceramide, and blood group B substance in the cell. In affected males, and in some females, this leads to early death due to occlusive disease of the heart, kidney, and brain. This disease is currently treated by infusions of αGal, prolonging patients’ lives but producing antibodies against the enzyme reducing the treatment efficacy. Treatment also causes numerous and …

Distribution And Activation Of Catecholaminergic Neurons In The Brain Of Male Plainfin Midshipman Fish: Divergence In Behavior And Reproductive Phenotype, Zachary Ghahramani Sep 2017

Distribution And Activation Of Catecholaminergic Neurons In The Brain Of Male Plainfin Midshipman Fish: Divergence In Behavior And Reproductive Phenotype, Zachary Ghahramani

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The plainfin midshipman fish, Porichthys notatus, provides an excellent opportunity for delimiting the influence of neurochemical content on vertebrate vocal behavior, in part because the production and recognition of social-acoustic signals is vital to their reproductive behavior. There are two distinct reproductive male morphs that follow divergent developmental trajectories with corresponding alternative reproductive tactics: type I males are the territorial/nesting morph that vocally court females during the summer breeding season while type II males do not court females, but instead sneak spawn in competition with type I males. Catecholaminergic neurons, which synthesize and release the neurotransmitters dopamine or noradrenaline, …

Behavioral Responses To Pulses Of Light In The Longfin Inshore Squid, Doryteuthis Pealeii (Lesueur, 1821), Stavros P. Hadjisolomou Sep 2017

Behavioral Responses To Pulses Of Light In The Longfin Inshore Squid, Doryteuthis Pealeii (Lesueur, 1821), Stavros P. Hadjisolomou

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The coleoid cephalopods (octopus, squid, and cuttlefish) are masters of rapid, adaptive camouflage. Unlike the slower hormonal chromatophore control of flatfish and chameleons, coleoid mollusks can change body patterns in milliseconds. Visual camouflage in coleoids is driven by a sensorimotor system consisting of visual input of their surroundings, a sophisticated central nervous system for information processing, and a neuromuscular control for body patterning. Motor neurons selectively activate millions of muscles, alternately expanding and reducing the pigmented chromatophores to generate visible brown, red, orange and yellow patterns on the skin. Below the chromatophore-layered skin are two types of reflecting cells, iridophores …

A Combinatorial Framework For Multiple Rna Interaction Prediction, Syed Ali Ahmed Sep 2017

A Combinatorial Framework For Multiple Rna Interaction Prediction, Syed Ali Ahmed

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The interaction of two RNA molecules involves a complex interplay between folding and binding that warranted recent developments in RNA-RNA interaction algorithms. However, biological mechanisms in which more than two RNAs take part in an interaction also exist.

A typical algorithmic approach to such problems is to find the minimum energy structure. Often the computationally optimal solution does not represent the biologically correct structure of the interaction. In addition, different biological structures may be observed, depending on several factors. Furthermore, scoring techniques often miss critical details about dependencies within different parts of the structure, which typically leads to lower scores …
