Survey Of Rainwater Catchment Use And Practices On Hawaii Island, Mary J. Donohue, Patricia S.H. Macomber, Darren Okimoto, Darren T. Lerner
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
The harvesting of rainwater for domestic use on Hawaii Island is widespread, particularly in areas not served by municipal water. Rainwater catchment is currently unregulated in Hawaii with the responsibility of installing and maintaining appropriate systems on owners and users. Well-designed and maintained rainwater catchment systems are more likely to provide water free of pathogens than poorly designed or maintained systems. We conducted outreach to rural Hawaii Island communities on rainwater catchment best practices and explored household uses and practices associated with these systems via survey of 110 individuals. Nearly 90% (N=96) of all survey respondents used harvested rainwater as …

Land Use Modification And Changing Redox Conditions Releases Selenium And Sulfur From Historic Marsh Sediments, Barry J. Hibbs, Monica Lee, Rachel Ridgway
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
San Diego Creek Watershed forms the southern end of the Coastal Plain that covers much of Los Angeles County and Orange County, California. Prior to 1900, the central part of the watershed was marshland, and the edges of the watershed were used for grazing sheep and cattle. After 1900, cattle and sheep grazing were displaced by irrigated agriculture. Drainage ditches and channels were constructed to drain the marshes to “reclaim” the land for agriculture. Today, the drainage ditches and channels still exist in the watershed, which has undergone massive urban growth. Shallow groundwater discharges into these channels and ditches, which …
Model Water Transfer Mechanisms As A Drought Preparation System, Mike Pease, Tricia Snyder
Model Water Transfer Mechanisms As A Drought Preparation System, Mike Pease, Tricia Snyder
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
This article evaluates the suitability of two supply-side drought management tools, Emergency Water Banks and Strategic Water Reserves for multi-year severe drought periods. The limited sample-size related to the implementation of either makes direct comparison impossible, but through case studies some cursory evaluation as to their efficacy and their limitations is possible. These short-term tools take different approaches to increase the amount of water available for reallocation during drought. While neither are stand-alone solutions, and may not be suitable for continual use, both hold potential to provide short-term relief during periods of severe shortage. Both however, carry drawbacks that can …
Changing Student Conceptions Of Arid, Urban Watershed Management, Rachel A. Thomas, Vanessa Svihla
Changing Student Conceptions Of Arid, Urban Watershed Management, Rachel A. Thomas, Vanessa Svihla
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Despite the central importance of water, few students have the opportunity to study water resources management in secondary education. Even in tertiary education—unless they major in water resources or a closely related field—they are likely to receive only a week or two of instruction about water resources in introductory science courses. Typical instruction in such courses is textbook-based, with the course instructor lecturing on a broad range of topics. Complicating this, little is known about student preconceptions, which may interfere with—or be used to support—learning. We sought to identify preconceptions in an introductory environmental science course at an urban, research …
Rattlesnake Nuisance Removals And Urban Expansion In Phoenix, Arizona, Steven L. Pitts, Bryan D. Hughes, Ivana Mali
Rattlesnake Nuisance Removals And Urban Expansion In Phoenix, Arizona, Steven L. Pitts, Bryan D. Hughes, Ivana Mali
Western North American Naturalist
Urbanization can have significant consequences on local wildlife. While some species can thrive in urban environments, others are often seen as nuisance animals and therefore are either killed by landowners or removed by professionals. Snakes, especially rattlesnakes, represent one such taxon. Here, we analyzed rattlesnake removal data from the city of Phoenix, Arizona, USA, to determine whether the removal data directly correlates with urban expansion. Between 2011 and 2014, over 500 rattlesnakes and over 300 non-rattlesnakes were removed by professionals, with significant removal clusters in the northern Phoenix metropolis. Land cover change analyses showed that all removal sites experienced dramatic …

Molecular, Cellular & Biomedical Sciences
Frankia sp. NRRL B-16219 was directly isolated from a soil sample obtained from the rhizosphere of Ceanothus jepsonii growing in the USA. Its host plant range includes members of Elaeagnaceae species. Phylogenetically, strain NRRL B-16219 is closely related to “Frankia discariae” with a 16S rRNA gene similarity of 99.78%. Because of the lack of genetic tools for Frankia, our understanding of the bacterial signals involved during the plant infection process and the development of actinorhizal root nodules is very limited. Since the first three Frankia genomes were sequenced, additional genome sequences covering more diverse strains have helped provide insight into …

Urbanization Alters Communities Of Flying Arthropods In Parks And Gardens Of A Medium-Sized City, Edward Lagucki, Justin D. Burdine, Kevin E. Mccluney
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Urbanization transforms undeveloped landscapes into built environments, causing changes in communities and ecological processes. Flying arthropods play important roles in these processes as pollinators, decomposers, and predators, and can be important in structuring food webs. The goal of this study was to identify associations between urbanization and the composition of communities of flying (and floating) arthropods within gardens and parks in a medium-sized mesic city. We predicted that flying arthropod abundance and diversity would respond strongly to percent impervious surface and distance to city center, measurements of urbanization. Flying arthropods were sampled from 30 gardens and parks along an urbanization …

Expedited Radiation Biodosimetry By Automated Dicentric Chromosome Identification (Adci) And Dose Estimation, Peter Rogan, Ben Shirley, Yanxin Li, Joan Knoll
Biochemistry Publications
Biological radiation dose can be estimated from dicentric chromosome frequencies in metaphase cells. Performing these cytogenetic dicentric chromosome assays is traditionally a manual, labor-intensive process not well suited to handle the volume of samples which may require examination in the wake of a mass casualty event. Automated Dicentric Chromosome Identifier and Dose Estimator (ADCI) software automates this process by examining sets of metaphase images using machine learning-based image processing techniques. The software selects appropriate images for analysis by removing unsuitable images, classifies each object as either a centromere-containing chromosome or non-chromosome, further distinguishes chromosomes as monocentric chromosomes (MCs) or dicentric …

The current standard of care for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) includes radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery in certain individualized cases. In unresectable NSCLC, chemoradiation has been the standard of care for the past three decades. Local and distant failure remains high in this group of patients, so dose escalation has been studied in both single institution and national clinical trials. Though initial studies showed a benefit to dose escalation, phase III studies examining dose escalation using standard fractionation or hyperfractionation have failed to show a benefit. Over the last 17 years, stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) has shown …

Rare earth elements have generally not been thought to have a biological role. However, recent work has demonstrated that the light REEs (LREEs: La, Ce, Pr, and Nd) are essential for at least some methanotrophs, being co-factors in the XoxF type of methanol dehydrogenase (MDH). We show here that dissolved LREEs were significantly removed in a submerged plume of methane-rich water during the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) well blowout. Furthermore, incubation experiments conducted with naturally methane-enriched waters from hydrocarbon seeps in the vicinity of the DWH wellhead also showed LREE removal concurrent with methane consumption. Metagenomic sequencing of incubation …
Lung Ct Radiomics: An Overview Of Using Images As Data, Samuel Hunt Hawkins
Lung Ct Radiomics: An Overview Of Using Images As Data, Samuel Hunt Hawkins
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States and worldwide. Early detection of lung cancer can help improve patient outcomes, and survival prediction can inform plans of treatment. By extracting quantitative features from computed tomography scans of lung cancer, predictive models can be built that can achieve both early detection and survival prediction. To build these predictive models, first a detected lung nodule is segmented, then image features are extracted, and finally a model can be built utilizing image features to make predictions. These predictions can help radiologists improve cancer care.
Building predictive models based …

Aggregation of amyloid β (Aβ) peptides is a significant event that underpins Alzheimer disease (AD) pathology. Aβ aggregates, especially the low-molecular weight oligomers, are the primary toxic agents in AD and hence, there is increasing interest in understanding their formation and behavior. Aggregation is a nucleation-dependent process in which the pre-nucleation events are dominated by Aβ homotypic interactions. Dynamic flux and stochasticity during pre-nucleation renders the reactions susceptible to perturbations by other molecules. In this context, we investigate the heterotypic interactions between Aβ and fatty acids (FAs) by two independent tool-sets such as …

Background: Nociception is maintained by genome-wide regulation of transcription in the dorsal root ganglia—spinal cord network. Hence, transcription factors constitute a promising class of targets for breakthrough pharmacological interventions to treat chronic pain. DNA decoys are oligonucleotides and specific inhibitors of transcription factor activities. A methodological series of in vivo–in vitro screening cycles was performed with decoy/transcription factor couples to identify targets capable of producing a robust and long-lasting inhibition of established chronic pain. Decoys were injected intrathecally and their efficacy was tested in the spared nerve injury and chronic constriction injury models of chronic pain in rats using repetitive …

Selfie-Takers Prefer Left Cheeks: Converging Evidence From The (Extended) Selfiecity Database, Lev Manovich, Vera Ferrari, Nicola Bruno
Publications and Research
According to previous reports, selfie takers in widely different cultural contexts prefer poses showing the left cheek more than the right cheek. This posing bias may be interpreted as evidence for a right-hemispheric specialization for the expression of facial emotions. However, earlier studies analyzed selfie poses as categorized by human raters, which raises methodological issues in relation to the distinction between frontal and three-quarter poses. Here, we provide converging evidence by analyzing the (extended) selfiecity database which includes automatic assessments of head rotation and of emotional expression. We confirm a culture- and sex-independent left-cheek bias and report stronger expression of …

Plant Mechanosensitive Ion Channels: An Ocean Of Possibilities, Debarati Basu, Elizabeth S. Haswell
Biology Faculty Research
Mechanosensitive ion channels, transmembrane proteins that directly couple mechanical stimuli to ion flux, serve to sense and respond to changes in membrane tension in all branches of life. In plants, mechanosensitive channels have been implicated in the perception of important mechanical stimuli such as osmotic pressure, touch, gravity, and pathogenic invasion. Indeed, three established families of plant mechanosensitive ion channels play roles in cell and organelle osmoregulation and root mechanosensing - and it is likely that many other channels and functions await discovery. Inspired by recent discoveries in bacterial and animal systems, we are beginning to establish the conserved and …

The protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica is a causative agent of amoebiasis, where it causes millions of cases of dysentery and liver abscess each year. Metronidazole is a drug of choice against amoebiasis. The drug is a choice because of its efficacy and low cost, but at the same time it causes several adverse side effects; therefore, it is important to find effective medications to treat amoebiasis without any complications or any side effects. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of different concentrations (50, 75 and 100 μg/ml) of silver nanoparticle (AgNPs)against trophozoites stages of E. histolytica …
