Transcriptome Sequencing And Delimitation Of Sympatric Oscarella Species (O. Carmela And O. Pearsei Sp. Nov) From California, Usa, Alexander V. Ereskovsky, Daniel J. Richter, Dennis V. Lavrov, Klaske J. Schippers, Scott A. Nichols
Transcriptome Sequencing And Delimitation Of Sympatric Oscarella Species (O. Carmela And O. Pearsei Sp. Nov) From California, Usa, Alexander V. Ereskovsky, Daniel J. Richter, Dennis V. Lavrov, Klaske J. Schippers, Scott A. Nichols
Biological Sciences: Faculty Scholarship
The homoscleromorph sponge Oscarella carmela, first described from central California, USA is shown to represent two superficially similar but both morphologically and phylogenetically distinct species that are co-distributed. We here describe a new species as Oscarella pearsei, sp. nov. and re-describe Oscarella carmela; the original description was based upon material from both species. Further, we correct the identification of published genomic/transcriptomic resources that were originally attributed to O. carmela, and present new Illumina-sequenced transcriptome assemblies for each of these species, and the mitochondrial genome sequence for O. pearsei sp. nov. Using SSU and LSU …
The Clash Of The Trinities: A New Theoretical Analysis Of The General Nature Of War, Daniel Maurer Major
The Clash Of The Trinities: A New Theoretical Analysis Of The General Nature Of War, Daniel Maurer Major
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
This monograph reimagines war’s fundamental nature, extending Clausewitz’s theory of its political origin and “Trinitarian” elements in a way that embraces alternative, sociological explanations like that of John Keegan. Ultimately, it proposes a new way to visualize the complexities of war’s intrinsic elements, operating at any scale, and expresses war with a completely new and universal definition.

No-Pesticide, Conventional, And Nitrogen Management Strategies For Lawns And Athletic Fields In Southern New England, Julie Campbell
No-Pesticide, Conventional, And Nitrogen Management Strategies For Lawns And Athletic Fields In Southern New England, Julie Campbell
Doctoral Dissertations
Pesticide and fertilizer usage throughout the United States is coming under increased scrutiny from both the public and scientific communities due to potential negative environmental impacts and perceived health concerns. The three studies presented here focus on evaluating different management plans for home lawns and athletic fields, while also providing improved dissemination of information to athletic field managers. Results of the athletic field and home lawn management plan study indicate that pesticide treatments outperformed non-pesticide treatments across most measures. However, if a non-pesticide plan is desired then the high input organic or high input pesticide-free plan would be preferred over …

Development Of Markers For Embryonic Reproductive Competence In Assisted Reproduction, Xin Tao
Development Of Markers For Embryonic Reproductive Competence In Assisted Reproduction, Xin Tao
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
In humans, early embryo development is a complex process that consists of sequential events: oocyte maturation, fertilization, embryonic growth and implantation. Disruption of these highly regulated processes results in reproductive failure and infertility. This study characterizes and describes embryonic aneuploidy, mitochondrial content level and endometrial microbial environment related to reproductive competence, in particular instances in which failure results.
To examine the molecular underpinnings of mammalian gamete and early embryo chromosome segregation, we established a comprehensive chromosomal screening (CCS) method for mice poly bodies, oocytes and embryos by the application of whole genome amplification (WGA) and next generation sequencing (NGS). First, …

Hemoglobin level detection is necessary for evaluating health condition in the human. In the laboratory setting, it is detected by shining light through a small volume of blood and using a colorimetric electronic particle counting algorithm. This invasive process requires time, blood specimens, laboratory equipment, and facilities. There are also many studies on non-invasive hemoglobin level detection. Existing solutions are expensive and require buying additional devices. In this paper, we present a smartphone-based non-invasive hemoglobin detection method. It uses the video images collected from the fingertip of a person. We hypothesized that there is a significant relation between the fingertip …

In previous work, we reported on the isolation and genome sequence analysis of Bacillus cereus strain tsu1 NCBI accession number JPYN00000000. The 36 scaffolds in the assembled tsu1 genome were all aligned with B. cereus B4264 genome with variations. Genes encoding for xylanase and cellulase and the cluster of genes in the poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) biosynthesis pathway were identified in tsu1 genome. The PHB accumulation in B. cereus tsu1 was initially identified using Sudan Black staining and then confirmed using high-performance liquid chromatography. Physical properties of these PHB extracts, when analyzed with Raman spectra and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, were found …
Theory And Applications Of Plasmonically Active Spherical And Core-Shell Nanoparticles, Mohammad Habibur Rahaman
Theory And Applications Of Plasmonically Active Spherical And Core-Shell Nanoparticles, Mohammad Habibur Rahaman
Student Theses and Dissertations
Optical properties of metal nanoparticles and core-shell nanoparticles are related to their plasmon response. Plasmonic resonance is the collective oscillations of conduction electrons in metal. The core-shell nanoparticles represent unique geometry and plasmonic resonance can be tuned either by changing the distance between core-shell nanoparticle or by changing their core to shell ratio. This work focuses on the theoretical design of single and multiple core-shell nanoparticles for exploring the resonance properties of core-shell nanoparticles using scattering theory. The results provide new and tunable optical properties of core-shell nanoparticles that solid single or multiple metal nanoparticles can not demonstrate. We have …

Synthesis Of Small Molecule Heterocycles As Antimicrobial And Anticancer Agents, Zakeyah Ali Alsharif
Student Theses and Dissertations
This thesis contains three chapters. In chapter one, the synthesis of dihydropyrido-pyrimidones derivatives by using hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) as a solvent was reported and the synthesized compounds were tested against different bacteria but no activity was observed. In the second chapter, the syntheses of thiazoline and thiazole derivatives were reported. In this methodology, HFIP was used to promote for the reaction and sixty new molecules were synthesized. Two of these compounds showed promising activity as a potent anti-cancer agent against several cell lines. In the third chapter, pyrazole derivatives were synthesized and tested against different types of bacteria. Among these compounds, …

Conditional Random Slope: A New Approach For Estimating Individual Child Growth Velocity In Epidemiological Research, Michael Leung, Diego G. Bassani, Amy Racine‐Poon, Anna Goldenberg, Syed Asad Ali, Gagandeep Kang, Prasanna S. Premkumar, Daniel E. Roth
Department of Paediatrics and Child Health
Objectives: Conditioning child growth measures on baseline accounts for regression to the mean (RTM). Here, we present the “conditional random slope” (CRS) model, based on a linear-mixed effects model that incorporates a baseline-time interaction term that can accommodate multiple data points for a child while also directly accounting for RTM.
Methods: In two birth cohorts, we applied five approaches to estimate child growth velocities from 0 to 12 months to assess the effect of increasing data density (number of measures per child) on the magnitude of RTM of unconditional estimates, and the correlation and concordance between the CRS and four …

Climate change is one of today’s most significant and complex problems. The number and level of severity of extreme weather events is increasing rapidly around the world. One year after the next, we learn that heat records have been broken once again. Climate change has been traced to a wide range of severe problems around the world, ranging from the obvious damage caused by hurricanes, floods, extreme rainfall, prolonged droughts, wildfires and a host of other weather-related issues to the perhaps less obvious such as physical and mental illnesses, “civil unrest, riots, mass migrations and perhaps wars caused by water …

Chloride Intracellular Channel Proteins Respond To Heat Stress In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Jun Liang, Yakov Shaulov, Cathy Savage-Dunn, Stéphane Boissinot, Tasmia Hoque
Publications and Research
Chloride intracellular channel proteins (CLICs) are multi-functional proteins that are expressed in various cell types and differ in their subcellular location. Two CLIC homologs, EXL-1 (excretory canal abnormal like-1) and EXC-4 (excretory canal abnormal± 4), are encoded in the Caenorhabditis elegans genome, providing an excellent model to study the functional diversification of CLIC proteins. EXC-4 functions in excretory canal formation during normal animal development. However, to date, the physiological function of EXL-1 remains largely unknown. In this study, we demonstrate that EXL-1 responds specifically to heat stress and translocates from the cytoplasm to the nucleus in intestinal cells and body …

Data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry promises higher performance in terms of quantification and reproducibility compared to data-dependent acquisition mass spectrometry methods. To enable high-accuracy quantification of Staphylococcus aureus proteins, we have developed a global ion library for data-independent acquisition approaches employing high-resolution time of flight or Orbitrap instruments for this human pathogen. We applied this ion library resource to investigate the time-resolved adaptation of S. aureus to the intracellular niche in human bronchial epithelial cells and in a murine pneumonia model. In epithelial cells, abundance changes for more than 400 S. aureus proteins were quantified, revealing, e.g., the precise temporal regulation …
