Climate change is expected to lead to increases in drought frequency and severity, with deleterious effects on many ecosystems. Stomatal responses to changing environmental conditions form the backbone of all ecosystem models, but are based on empirical relationships and are not well-tested during drought conditions. Here, we use a dataset of 34 woody plant species spanning global forest biomes to examine the effect of leaf water potential on stomatal conductance and test the predictive accuracy of three major stomatal models and a recently proposed model. We find that current leaf-level empirical models have consistent biases of over-prediction of stomatal conductance …

Union Status, Educational Attainment, And Body Mass Index Among Emerging Adults, Rhiannon A. Kroeger Oct 2017

Union Status, Educational Attainment, And Body Mass Index Among Emerging Adults, Rhiannon A. Kroeger

Faculty Publications

This study uses fixed-effects regression modeling and three waves of data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) to examine whether union status and educational attainment interact to influence change in body mass index (BMI) during emerging adulthood. The results support the hypothesis that the effect of union status on change in BMI is smaller for those with more educational attainment. In particular, emerging adults with no college education experience significant increases in BMI associated with both marriage and cohabitation. The increases in BMI associated with marriage and cohabitation are significantly smaller for those with …

Faculty Publications

The aims of this study were to use extracted purple rice bran oil (PRBO) to produce oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions and to compare the emulsions to emulsions of conventional brown rice bran oil (BRBO). Four emulsions were produced: (1) a PRBO emulsion produced with ultrasonic processing (Emulsion I PRBO), (2) a BRBO emulsion produced with ultrasonic processing (Emulsion I BRBO), (3) Emulsion II PRBO produced from Emulsion I with an ultrashearing homogenizer and (4) Emulsion II BRBO produced from Emulsion I with an ultrashearing homogenizer. The emulsions were analyzed for stability, particle size, microstructure, thiobarbituric-acid-reactive-substances (TBARS) and rheological properties. The droplet …

Lettuce Grow: Universities Collaborating With Nonprofits To Provide Child Care Development Educators With Garden Knowledge And Experience, Kathryn Fontenot, Edward Bush, Rebecca Gravois

Faculty Publications

University-based horticulture departments and extension agents have explored the relationship between gardening programs and consumer knowledge and preferences. Studies have established positive correlations between garden participation and increased science scores and heightened environmental stewardship. The objective of this research was to determine if participation in ‘‘Lettuce Grow’’ garden workshops cohosted by the Louisiana State University Agriculture Center (LSU AgCenter) and Volunteers of America Greater Baton Rouge (VOAGBR) had positive effects on child care providers’ garden knowledge and willingness to implement garden programming with children aged 5 years and younger. Participation led to a 67% increase (P ≤ 0.05) in horticulture …

Transcription factors (TFs) regulate the expression of other genes to indirectly mediate stress resistance mechanisms. Therefore, when studying TF-mediated stress resistance, it is important to understand how TFs interact with genes in the genetic background. Here, we fine-mapped the aluminum (Al) resistance QTL Alt12.1 to a 44-kb region containing six genes. Among them is ART1, which encodes a C2H2-type zinc finger TF required for Al resistance in rice. The mapping parents, Al-resistant cv Azucena (tropical japonica) and Al-sensitive cv IR64 (indica), have extensive sequence polymorphism within the ART1 coding region, but similar ART1 expression levels. Using reciprocal near-isogenic lines (NILs) …

The Ecclesiastical Tribunals Field Hospital For Wounded Marriages: The New Matrimonial Processus Brevoir, Roberto Rosas

Faculty Articles

This article will focus on explaining the new marriage annulment processes of the Latin Church, which are found in the Motu proprio Mitis ludex Dominus lesus, although the same processes apply to the processes in the Eastern Churches. Any differences that exist between the two processes are due to the distinct ecclesiastical structure between one Church and another.

This explanation will advance the following points: (1) marriage; (2) reasons for a new matrimonial process; (3) guiding principles for the new process; (4) pastoral footprint of service to the faithful in ecclesiastic tribunals; (5) actualization of the ecclesiastic structure; (6) the …

Anthropogenic Noise And The Endangered Species Act, Carolyn Larcom Oct 2017

Anthropogenic Noise And The Endangered Species Act, Carolyn Larcom

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

This feature examines the continued rise of anthropogenic noise and its harmful effects on whale species. It also advocates for the use of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in litigation as an instrument to quiet anthropogenic noise. The North Atlantic right whale is used as a case study because of its status as a critically endangered species and its close proximity to noise pollution along the Atlantic coast and in the Gulf of Mexico.

Legislative Efforts To Increase State Management For Imperiled Species Should Be Rejected, Stephanie Kurose Oct 2017

Legislative Efforts To Increase State Management For Imperiled Species Should Be Rejected, Stephanie Kurose

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

The Federal Endangered Species Act (ESA or “Act”) is our nation’s most successful conservation law. Its purpose is to prevent the extinction of our most at-risk plants and animals, increase their numbers, and effect their full recovery—and eventually their removal from the endangered list. Since its enactment in 1973, the Act has been more than 99% effective at saving species under its protection from extinction, and it has put hundreds more on the road to recovery. Scientists estimate that at least 227 species would have likely gone extinct without the ESA’s passage.

Etsu Today - Fall 2017, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU Today [magazine]

Where will your footprints lead? That was the question I posed to our freshmen during the 2017 Student Convocation, days before the start of the fall semester. It was the same question that I also presented to our faculty earlier that morning during our annual Faculty Convocation. The upcoming 2017-2018 academic year will be a celebration of the footprints being left by East Tennessee State University. Those footprints began in the fall of 1911 when 29 students—all aspiring teachers—arrived on our campus as the inaugural class of East Tennessee State Normal School. The original mission of the school was to …

Prosecuting Members Of Isis For Destruction Of Cultural Property, Cody Corliss

Florida State University Law Review

This Article examines the potential for war-crime charges against members of ISIS for “culture crimes” in Syria and Iraq, specifically for group members’ participation in the intentional destruction of cultural and historic sites in the Middle East. This Article begins by tracing the history of legal efforts to protect cultural property and the recent developments in international law that have transformed “culture crimes” into chargeable war crimes. After examining the history of legal efforts to protect property, this Article turns its focus to ISIS and the group’s role in destroying cultural property that it deems antithetical to its brand of …

Prairie Enhancement Of Non-Native Cool-Season Grass Stands, Justin Meissen Oct 2017

Prairie Enhancement Of Non-Native Cool-Season Grass Stands, Justin Meissen

Tallgrass Prairie Publications and Reports

Diversifying non-native grass stands by seeding and mowing may be a simple and cost-effective practice that roadside managers can add to their existing portfolio of native vegetation management tools. To assess whether prairie species can be successfully seeded into stands of non-native cool season grasses using only establishment mowing, we conducted a field experiment in three Iowa roadsides. Our objectives in this study were to 1) quantify native seedling emergence in cool-season grass stands seeded with prairie species, and 2) evaluate the effect of mowing on native seedling establishment and established roadside vegetation.
