Seasonal Variation In The Utility Of A Status Signaling System: Plumage Ornament Predicts Foraging Success Only During Periods Of High Competition, Philip Queller, Troy G. Murphy
Biology Faculty Research
Status signals allow competitors to assess each other’s resource holding potential and reduce the occurrence of physical fights. Because status signals function to mediate competition over resources, a change in the strength of competition may affect the utility of a status signaling system. Status signals alter competitor behavior during periods of high competition, and thus determine access to resources; however, when competition is reduced, we expect these signals to become disassociated from access to resources. We investigated seasonal changes in status signaling of the male black-crested titmouse (Baeolophus atricristatus), a species that experiences substantial changes in population density …

Mismeasured Mortality: Correcting Estimates Of Wolf Poaching In The United States, Adrian Treves, Kyle A. Artelle, Chris T. Darimont, David R. Parsons
Wildlife Population Management Collection
Measuring rates and causes of mortalities is important in animal ecology and management. Observing the fates of known individuals is a common method of estimating life history variables, including mortality patterns. It has long been assumed that data lost when known animals disappear were unbiased. We test and reject this assumption under conditions common to most, if not all, studies using marked animals. We illustrate the bias for 4 endangered wolf populations in the United States by reanalyzing data and assumptions about the known and unknown fates of marked wolves to calculate the degree to which risks of different causes …

Direct Dating Of Neanderthal Remains From The Site Of Vindija Cave And Implications For The Middle To Upper Paleolithic Transition, Thibaut Devièse, Ivor Karavanić, Daniel Comeskey
KIP Articles
Previous dating of the Vi-207 and Vi-208 Neanderthal remains from Vindija Cave (Croatia) led to the suggestion that Neanderthals survived there as recently as 28,000–29,000 B.P. Subsequent dating yielded older dates, interpreted as ages of at least ∼32,500 B.P. We have redated these same specimens using an approach based on the extraction of the amino acid hydroxyproline, using preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (Prep-HPLC). This method is more efficient in eliminating modern contamination in the bone collagen. The revised dates are older than 40,000 B.P., suggesting the Vindija Neanderthals did not live more recently than others across Europe, and probably predate …

Magnetic, Structural And Magnetocaloric Properties Of Ni-Si And Ni-Al Thermoseeds For Self-Controlled Hyperthermia, Sudip Pandey, Abdiel Quetz, Anil Aryal, Igor Dubenko, Dipanjan Mazumdar, Shane Stadler, Naushad Ali
Faculty Publications
Self-controlled hyperthermia is a non-invasive technique used to kill or destroy cancer cells while preserving normal surrounding tissues. We have explored bulk magnetic Ni-Si and Ni-Al alloys as a potential thermoseeds. The structural, magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of the samples were investigated, including saturation magnetisation, Curie temperature (TC), and magnetic and thermal hysteresis, using room temperature X-ray diffraction and magnetometry. The annealing time, temperature and the effects of homogenising the thermoseeds were studied to determine the functional hyperthermia applications. The bulk Ni-Si and Ni-Al binary alloys have Curie temperatures in the desired range, 316 K–319 K (43 °C–46 °C), which …
Reported Child Sexual Abuse: Impact Of Adaptive Skills And Association With Psychological Adjustment, Seandra Jean Walker
Reported Child Sexual Abuse: Impact Of Adaptive Skills And Association With Psychological Adjustment, Seandra Jean Walker
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The impact of sexual abuse on children’s psychological well-being is well recognized. Considerable research has evaluated the deleterious effects and various protective and risk factors to victimization. Research has shown intense and pervasive psychological symptoms preceding child sexual abuse; however, many studies solely report long-term effects of sexual abuse, or rely on retrospective accounts. Additionally, there is a lack of research on the relationship between psychological adjustment and adaptive skills shortly after child sexual abuse. This study investigated the relationship between psychological problems (i.e. posttraumatic symptomology, internalizing, and externalizing problems) and adaptive skills (i.e. adaptability, social skills, leadership, activities of …

Aberrant Plant Diversity In The Purgatory Watershed Of Southeastern Colorado And Northeastern New Mexico, Joseph A. Kleinkopf, Dina A. Clark, Erin A. Tripp
Western North American Naturalist
Despite a dearth of biological study in the area, the Purgatory Watershed concentrated in southeastern Colorado and northeastern New Mexico is home to a number of unique land formations and endemic organisms. At onetime nonarable land where Dust Bowl storms of the 1930s originated, the Purgatory Watershed is presently home to the Comanche National Grasslands, the Picketwire Canyonlands, and the expansive Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site. The Purgatory Watershed is composed of deep canyons, eroded mesas, and extensive intact shortgrass plains, and is located at a crossroads of the biodiversity of the Southern Rocky Mountains, Great Plains, and Chihuahuan Desert. Here …
Potential Functions Of Lea Proteins From The Brine Shrimp Artemia Franciscana - Anhydrobiosis Meets Bioinformatics., Brett Janis, Vladimir N. Uversky, Michael Menze
Potential Functions Of Lea Proteins From The Brine Shrimp Artemia Franciscana - Anhydrobiosis Meets Bioinformatics., Brett Janis, Vladimir N. Uversky, Michael Menze
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins are a large group of anhydrobiosis-associated intrinsically disordered proteins (IDP), which are commonly found in plants and some animals. The brine shrimp Artemiafranciscana is the only known animal that expresses LEA proteins from three, and not only one, different groups in its anhydrobiotic life stage. The reason for the higher complexity in the A. franciscana LEA proteome (LEAome), compared with other anhydrobiotic animals, remains mostly unknown. To address this issue, we have employed a suite of bioinformatics tools to evaluate the disorder status of the ArtemiaLEAome and to analyze the roles of intrinsic disorder in …

Insecticidal crystal (Cry) proteins produced by the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) target cells in the midgut epithelium of susceptible larvae. While the mode of action of Cry toxins has been extensively investigated, the midgut response to Cry intoxication and its regulation are not well characterized. In this work, we describe the secreted proteome (secretome) of primary mature midgut cell cultures from Heliothis virescens larvae after exposure to Cry1Ac toxin compared to control buffer treatment. The Cry1Ac-induced secretome caused higher proliferation and differentiation and an overall reduction in total cell mortality over time in primary H. virescens midgut stem cell cultures …

AbstractThe enzyme tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP, two isoforms 5a and 5b) is highly expressed in alveolar macrophages, but its function there is unclear and potent selective inhibitors of TRAP are required to assess functional aspects of the protein. We found higher TRAP activity/expression in lungs of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma compared to controls and more TRAP activity in lungs of mice with experimental COPD or asthma. Stimuli related to asthma and/or COPD were tested for their capacity to induce TRAP. Receptor activator of NF-κb ligand (RANKL) and Xanthine/Xanthine Oxidase induced TRAP mRNA expression in …

Identification Of The Direct Regulon Of Ntca During Early Acclimation To Nitrogen Starvation In The Cyanobacterium Synechocystis Sp. Pcc 6803, J Giner-Lamia, R Robles-Rengel, Ma Hernandez-Prieto, Et Al
School of Biomedical Sciences
In cyanobacteria, nitrogen homeostasis is maintained by an intricate regulatory network around transcription factor NtcA. Although mechanisms controlling NtcA activity appear to be well understood, its regulon remains poorly defined. To determine the NtcA regulon during the early stages of nitrogen starvation for the model cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, we performed chromatin immunoprecipitation, followed by sequencing (ChIP-seq), in parallel with transcriptome analysis (RNA-seq). Through combining these methods, we determined 51 genes activated and 28 repressed directly by NtcA. In addition to genes associated with nitrogen and carbon metabolism, a considerable number of genes without current functional annotation were among …

Nitrate Leaching From Sand And Pumice Geomedia Amended With Pyrogenic Carbon Materials, James Jihoon Kang, Marissa Davila, Sergio Mireles, Jungseok Ho
School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
There is increasing interest in using pyrogenic carbon as an adsorbent for aqueous contaminants in stormwater. The objective of this study was to investigate pyrogenic carbon materials as an amendment to geomedia to reduce nitrate leaching. Batch adsorption and column experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of a commercial activated carbon and two biochars incorporated (5% by weight) into sand and pumice columns. The batch adsorption with 50 mg L−1 of nitrate solution showed that only activated carbon resulted in a substantial adsorption for nitrate up to 41%. Tested biochars were not effective in removing aqueous nitrate and even …

Us, Them, And Me! Intergroup And Personal Challenges Of Aging Successfully, Howie Giles
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
This Keynote Address was delivered at the 73 rd . Annual New York State Communication Association Conference on October 16, 2015. After an anecdotal foray into how he came to study “geronto-communication”, Dr. Giles reviewed his and others’ research and theory on the interfaces between intergenerational communication, subjective health, and aging across many Western and Asian settings. This programmatic body of work was, in large part, guided by communication accommodation theory (which was briefly overviewed). Thereafter, Dr. Giles introduced various views of successful aging and the role of communication practices therein. This led to the formulation and testing of a …

“Under Fathoms Of Salt Water:” Canada’S Ammunition Dumping Program, 1944-1947, Alex Souchen
Canadian Military History
This article examines Canada’s ammunition dumping program in the mid-1940s and pays special attention to the practical and technical dilemmas that influenced policy making and implementation. A pressing logistical crisis followed the end of the Second World War as crowded armaments depots ran out of storage space for leftover ordnance. In July 1945 a major explosion at the Bedford Magazine in Halifax Harbour heightened public safety concerns and influenced future disposal policies. From a range of imperfect destruction methods, dumping emerged as one of the most efficient alternatives; whenever possible conventional and chemical munitions were submerged. Although the quantities sunk …
Patient Experience And The Treatment Of Venereal Disease In Toronto’S Military Base Hospital During The First World War, Kandace Bogaert
Patient Experience And The Treatment Of Venereal Disease In Toronto’S Military Base Hospital During The First World War, Kandace Bogaert
Canadian Military History
During the First World War, the Canadian Espeditionary Force (cef) was infamous for having the highest rates of venereal infection among the Allies. Soldiers could be inspected at random, questioned about the source of their infection, and held in quarantine in hospital until cured. While medical officers published research on the prevalence and treatment of venereal disease, little has been written on the experiences of patients. This paper examines the experiences of venereal patients in Toronto’s Military Base Hospital in 1916. Soldiers’ correspondences reveal their perspectives, along with the ways in which the military’s management of venereal disease was laden …
