Human Body Theater, Katelyn Osborn Oct 2017

Human Body Theater, Katelyn Osborn

Children's Book and Media Review

Have you ever wondered why you have to get shots at the doctor’s office? Or why your friend is allergic to peanuts but you aren’t? How about what happens when you break your arm? What about how your heart works? Luckily, kids and preteens have a great resource in Maris Wicks’s Human Body Theater. The book is presented as a comic book style “nonfiction revue” where each chapter dives deeper into a body system or organ, presented by a personable skeleton. Topics covered include the skeletal, muscular, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, excretory, endocrine, reproductive, immune, and nervous system; as well as …

Enforcement Dissonance: Lobsters, The Legislature, And Federal Waters In State V. Thomas, Christopher J. Rauscher

Maine Law Review

Consider the following: You, a Maine resident, and your friend, a Massachusetts resident, have gone for a weekend trout fishing trip to Acadia National Park in Downeast Maine. The two of you are happily catching trout, and then each of you hook a bass and reel it in. Keeping the bass is illegal under Maine law but not banned by the National Park. Along comes a Maine game warden, who spies the two of you and cites only you with a fine for catching and keeping the bass. The warden says nothing to the Massachusetts resident who continues to fish, …

First-Principles And Model Simulation Of All-Optical Spin Reversal, Thomas George, G.P. Zhang, Z. Babyak, Y. Xue, Y. Bai Oct 2017

First-Principles And Model Simulation Of All-Optical Spin Reversal, Thomas George, G.P. Zhang, Z. Babyak, Y. Xue, Y. Bai

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

All-optical spin switching is a potential trailblazer for information storage and communication at an unprecedented fast rate free of magnetic fields. However, the current wisdom is largely based on semiempirical models of effective magnetic fields and heat pulses, so it is difficult to provide high-speed design protocols for actual devices. Here, we carry out a massively parallel first-principles and model calculation for 13 spin systems and magnetic layers, free of any effective field, to establish a simpler and alternative paradigm of laser-induced ultrafast spin reversal and to point out a path to a full-integrated photospintronic device. It is the interplay …

The Anchor, Volume 131.05: October 4, 2017, Hope College

The Anchor: 2017

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Stromal interaction molecule-1 (STIM1) is a type-I transmembrane protein located on the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and plasma membranes (PM). ER-resident STIM1 regulates the activity of PM Orai1 channels in a process known as store operated calcium (Ca2+) entry which is the principal Ca2+ signaling process that drives the immune response. STIM1 undergoes post-translational N-glycosylation at two luminal Asn sites within the Ca2+ sensing domain of the molecule. However, the biochemical, biophysical, and structure biological effects of N-glycosylated STIM1 were poorly understood until recently due to an inability to readily obtain high levels of homogeneous N-glycosylated protein. Here, we describe the …

Polarity Sorting Of Axonal Microtubules: A Computational Study, Erin M. Craig, Howard T. Yeung, Anand N. Rao, Peter W. Baas Oct 2017

Polarity Sorting Of Axonal Microtubules: A Computational Study, Erin M. Craig, Howard T. Yeung, Anand N. Rao, Peter W. Baas

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

We present a computational model to test a “polarity sorting” mechanism for microtubule (MT) organization in developing axons. We simulate the motor-based axonal transport of short MTs to test the hypothesis that immobilized cytoplasmic dynein motors transport short MTs with their plus ends leading, so “mal-oriented” MTs with minus-end-out are transported toward the cell body while “correctly” oriented MTs are transported in the anterograde direction away from the soma. We find that dynein-based transport of short MTs can explain the predominately plus-end-out polarity pattern of axonal MTs but that transient attachments of plus-end-directed motor proteins and nonmotile cross-linker proteins are …

Self-Determination And Human Resource Retention: Employee And Volunteer Motivation To Stay In Rural Oregon Nonprofit Organizations, Nicole Richman Oct 2017

Self-Determination And Human Resource Retention: Employee And Volunteer Motivation To Stay In Rural Oregon Nonprofit Organizations, Nicole Richman

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

The present study used an existing model, the Volunteer Functions Inventory, to test the functional motives of volunteers and employees to engage in or continue service with a rural nonprofit organization. Self-Determination theory provides the underlying framework for the Volunteer Functions Inventory and the six motivational functions: understanding, values, enhancement, career, social, and protective. The model was tested using a sample of 168 employees and volunteers from Area Agencies on Aging located in rural Oregon. The results indicated that the protective function, reducing personal guilt by serving others in the community with less means, similarly motivates employees and volunteers to …

Entomology Faculty Publications

Acanthaspis cincticrus (Stål) is an assassin bug with a specialized camouflaging behavior to ambush ants in the nymphal stages. In this study, we comprehensively sequenced all the life stages of A. cincticrus, including the eggs, five nymph instars, female and male adults using Illumina HiSeq technology. We obtained 176 million clean sequence reads. The assembled 84,055 unigenes were annotated and classified functionally based on protein databases. Among the unigenes, 29.03% were annotated by one or more databases, suggesting their well-conserved functions. Comparison of the gene expression profiles in the egg, nymph and adult stages revealed certain bias. Functional enrichment …

Implementing Psychological Methods In The Management Of Trauma-Associated Tinnitus, Marc A. Fagelson Oct 2017

Implementing Psychological Methods In The Management Of Trauma-Associated Tinnitus, Marc A. Fagelson

ETSU Faculty Works

Dr. Fagelson, (Professor Audiology, ETSU) will discuss the unusual challenges facing patients and providers when tinnitus severity is linked to traumatic exposure. Interactions between neural mechanisms associated with tinnitus, posttraumatic stress-disorder (PTSD), and traumatic memory will be reviewed with particular attention to the way and degree to which such interactions affect tinnitus and disorders of sound tolerance. Conference attendees will be provided theoretical models of emotional memory consolidation that underscore trauma‘s durable effects on a patient‘s emotional state, reaction to the tinnitus signal, and to potentially-triggering environmental sounds. The putative benefits of tinnitus counseling will be presented in the context …

Robots As Intentional Agents: Using Neuroscientific Methods To Make Robots Appear More Social, E Wiese, G Metta, A Wykowska

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Robots are increasingly envisaged as our future cohabitants. However, while considerable progress has been made in recent years in terms of their technological realization, the ability of robots to interact with humans in an intuitive and social way is still quite limited. An important challenge for social robotics is to determine how to design robots that can perceive the user’s needs, feelings, and intentions, and adapt to users over a broad range of cognitive abilities. It is conceivable that if robots were able to adequately demonstrate these skills, humans would eventually accept them as social companions. We argue that the …

Neurons in the adult mammalian CNS decrease in intrinsic axon growth capacity during development in concert with changes in Krüppel-like transcription factors (KLFs). KLFs regulate axon growth in CNS neurons including retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Here, we found that knock-down of KLF9, an axon growth suppressor that is normally upregulated 250-fold in RGC development, promotes long-distance optic nerve regeneration in adult rats of both sexes. We identified a novel binding partner, MAPK10/JNK3 kinase, and found that JNK3 (c-Jun N-terminal kinase 3) is critical for KLF9's axon-growth-suppressive activity. Interfering with a JNK3-binding domain or mutating two newly discovered serine phosphorylation acceptor …

Over the past four decades, the incidence of meningitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae in children has decreased due to widespread vaccination against H. influenzae type b (Hib). The incidence of invasive diseases due to H. influenzae types not included in the vaccines, however, has increased. At present, there are a limited number of diagnostics available to detect non-type b H. influenzae. To address this issue, we developed a rapid, simple, and cost-effective method for detecting serotypes of H. influenzae. We designed LAMP primer sets based on published sequences for H. influenzae capsular types a, c, d, e, and …

Resorbable Versus Titanium Plates For Orthognathic Surgery, Anirudha Agnihotry, Zbys Fedorowicz, Mona Nasser, Karanjot S. Gill Oct 2017

Resorbable Versus Titanium Plates For Orthognathic Surgery, Anirudha Agnihotry, Zbys Fedorowicz, Mona Nasser, Karanjot S. Gill

More Faculty of Health Research

BACKGROUND: Recognition of some of the limitations of titanium plates and screws used for the fixation of bones has led to the development of plates manufactured from bioresorbable materials. Whilst resorbable plates appear to offer clinical advantages over metal plates in orthognathic surgery, concerns remain about the stability of fixation and the length of time required for their degradation and the possibility of foreign body reactions. OBJECTIVES: To compare the effectiveness of bioresorbable fixation systems with titanium systems used during orthognathic surgery. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the following databases: Cochrane Oral Health Group Trials Register (to 26th January 2006); the …

To Build The Fire Of Revolution, Stephen Roddewig Oct 2017

To Build The Fire Of Revolution, Stephen Roddewig

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

Scholarly examinations of naturalism in Jack London’s 1908 short story “To Build a Fire” often overlook the influence of the socialist political movement. After surveying the American Socialist Party movement and London’s activism in “How I Became a Socialist,” this essay uses the frame of Marxist rhetorical criticism to inspect sociopolitical themes in London’s famous story. London’s critiques of Individualism in “How I Became a Socialist” parallel one of his concerns in “To Build a Fire” as his unnamed protagonist progresses through the Yukon with the larger ideals of American society and the capitalist economy guiding his actions. Although masculinity, …

A World List Of Prey Of Chlaenius (Coleoptera: Carabidae), Andre Larochelle Oct 2017

A World List Of Prey Of Chlaenius (Coleoptera: Carabidae), Andre Larochelle

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

Being predaceous insects, the carabid beetles are believed to play an important role in the control of insect pests (Scherney 1957 and 1959, Hughes 1959, Wright, Hughes and Worral 1960, Mitchell 1963). The currant interest in biological control against noxious insects requires a complete understanding of the organisms being used. The aim of this paper was to compile a list of data on the food of the genus Chlaenius, from the literature and observations in the laboratory.

Negligible Feeding Responses By Birds To Variations In Abundance Of The Budworm, Choristoneura Pinus (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), William J. Mattson Oct 2017

Negligible Feeding Responses By Birds To Variations In Abundance Of The Budworm, Choristoneura Pinus (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), William J. Mattson

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpts)

Recent studies have emphasized that to evaluate the potential importance of any predators in prey regulation it is necessary to consider their functional (feeding) and numerical responses to variations in prey abundance (Holling 1959, Buckner 1966, 1967). For example, preliminary data from a study of bird predation on the jack pine budworm (Choristoneura pinus Freeman) in Michigan indicated that budworm consumption by the common resident birds in jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lambert) forests was only weakly related to observed budworm abundance (Mattson et al. 1968). This note reports further evidence to substantiate the preliminary data.
