2017 Boise State Research Data Environmental Scan Report, Michelle Armstrong, Heather Grevatt
Data Management Services
In 2015, the Albertsons Library’s Research Data Management Group established a 2-year strategic agenda which focused on increasing library service capacity, establishing partnerships with other campus stakeholders, and creating the technical infrastructure needed to ensure proper management of university research data assets. To inform this work during the next two year period, the group conducted an environmental scan of campus data management needs and activities. The survey was also designed to help other university administrators and campus partners understand the current state of research data, identify unmet needs, and highlight opportunities for increasing institutional capacity.
In general, Boise State has …

Tumors adapt to an unfavorable microenvironment by controlling the balance between cell proliferation and cell motility, but the regulators of this process are largely unknown. Here, we show that an alternatively spliced isoform of syntaphilin (SNPH), a cytoskeletal regulator of mitochondrial movements in neurons, is directed to mitochondria of tumor cells. Mitochondrial SNPH buffers oxidative stress and maintains complex II-dependent bioenergetics, sustaining local tumor growth while restricting mitochondrial redistribution to the cortical cytoskeleton and tumor cell motility. Conversely, introduction of stress stimuli to the microenvironment, including hypoxia, acutely lowered SNPH levels, resulting in bioenergetics defects and increased superoxide production. In …

The Relationship Between Peer Tutoring And Learning Styles At Rowan University, Marissa Jean Wood
The Relationship Between Peer Tutoring And Learning Styles At Rowan University, Marissa Jean Wood
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the learning styles of peer tutors employed by the Tutoring Services department on the Glassboro campus of Rowan University during the spring 2017 semester. The study collected responses to two learning style instruments: the Learning Connections Inventory (LCI) Adult Education Form © and the VARK © instrument. Of particular interest was what were the most common learning styles among the tutors and was there a relationship between the reported styles and, length of time as a tutor, academic major, and class rank?
Although there is a plethora of research describing the relationship …

An Inquiry Into The Development Of Future Speech-Language Pathologists: A Mixed Methods Study, Kimberly Plotts
Theses and Dissertations
Upon graduating college, many students seek employment within the degree area in which they obtained. Employers are seeking skills in individuals that encompass interpersonal, technical, analytical, personal, and professional abilities. As with many careers, the allied health field requires content specific knowledge and specialized skills, which indicate sufficient work readiness. The allied health field of speech-language pathology is touted as one of the fastest growing professions in this decade and is in demand. To become a speech-language pathologist, one must complete a master's program and supervised clinical practicums. Despite participating in a master's program with quality curricula, having supervision by …

The master cytokine TGF-β mediates tissue fibrosis associated with inflammation and tissue injury. TGF-β induces fibroblast activation and differentiation into myofibroblasts that secrete extracellular matrix proteins. Canonical TGF-β signaling mobilizes Smad2 and Smad3 transcription factors that control fibrosis by promoting gene expression. However, the importance of TGF-β-Smad2/3 signaling in fibroblast-mediated cardiac fibrosis has not been directly evaluated in vivo. Here, we examined pressure overload-induced cardiac fibrosis in fibroblast- and myofibroblast-specific inducible Cre-expressing mouse lines with selective deletion of the TGF-β receptors Tgfbr1/2, Smad2, or Smad3. Fibroblast-specific deletion of Tgfbr1/2 or Smad3, but not Smad2, markedly reduced the pressure overload-induced fibrotic …

Standardized Assessment Of Thin-Film Vitrification For Aquatic Species, Nolan J. Tiersch, Terrence R. Tiersch
Standardized Assessment Of Thin-Film Vitrification For Aquatic Species, Nolan J. Tiersch, Terrence R. Tiersch

Ultrarapid cooling under the appropriate conditions will produce vitrification, a glass-like state used to cryopreserve small sample volumes, but there are a number of major technical drawbacks impeding the application of vitrification to germplasm of aquatic species. These include a lack of suitable devices, and poor reproducibility and comparability among studies due to a lack of standardization. We used 3-D printing to produce a viewing pedestal coupled with a classification system to rapidly assess frozen film quality of vitrification loops. Classification time declined with practice from 2.1 ± 0.3 sec (mean ± SD) to 1.5 ± 0.2 sec (after 200 …

The Efficiency Of Dna Repair Processes In Proximity Of G 4 Dna Structures, Gloria Alvarado
The Efficiency Of Dna Repair Processes In Proximity Of G 4 Dna Structures, Gloria Alvarado
Theses and Dissertations
Guanine-rich segments of genomes promote the formation of a four-stranded DNA structure called G-quadruplex (G4 DNA). While evolutionarily conserved, guanine repeats show increased rates of mutagenesis and instability, and this is likely associated with G4 formation. In this thesis, I sought to clarify the molecular sources of genetic instability by testing the repair, excision, and synthesis through guanine-rich DNA. Using E. coli UDG and human SMUG1, I found that uracil is inefficiently repaired in proximity to G4 DNA in vitro. Investigation of E. coli exonuclease III and exonuclease I activity indicated that G4 DNA is a block to activity and …

Development Of Novel Alkaloid Derivatives For The Treatment Of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, Lindsay Michelle Renn
Development Of Novel Alkaloid Derivatives For The Treatment Of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, Lindsay Michelle Renn
Theses and Dissertations
The majority of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients can be treated with and respond to imatinib mesylate (Gleevec). Imatinib is known to inhibit BCR-ABLl kinase activity, and is effective for the treatment of the majority of CML patients. Multiple mutations have been found in patients resistant to imatinib treatment, including many located in the BCR-ABLl tyrosine kinase domain (e.g. E255K and T315I). Matrine is a bioactive alkaloid from Sophora flavescens and has been shown to inhibit several types of cancers and is used in Chinese medicine. The goal of this study is to develop new matrine derivatives that inhibit growth …

he reliability of the treadmill belt speed using a feedback-controlled treadmill algorithm was analyzed in this study. Using biomechanical factors of the participant's walking behavior, an estimated walking speed was calculated and used to adjust the speed of the treadmill. Our proposed algorithm expands on the current hypotheses of feedback-controlled treadmill algorithms and is presented below. Nine healthy, young adults walked on a treadmill controlled by the algorithm for three trials over two days. Each participant walked on the feedback-controlled treadmill for one 16-minute and one five-minute trial during day one and one 16-minute trial during day two. Mean, standard …

Art In Occupational Therapy Education: An Exploratory Mixed-Methods Study Of An Arts-Based Module, Susan Coppola, Adrienne F. Miao, Carolyn Allmendinger, Wanqing Zhang
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Art-based learning experiences have demonstrated a range of benefits, including improved observation skills and perspective taking. This article describes the effects of an art-based module in an entry-level curriculum for occupational therapy (OT) students. An exploratory pilot study investigated the feasibility of a group-administered visual art-based module for 20 first-year OT graduate students. Outcomes were evaluated using a mixed-methods approach that combined pre-post quantitative results from survey questionnaires and qualitative reflective essays. Pre- and post-surveys revealed significant changes in the students’ perception regarding the benefits of art in OT curricula. The students’ reflective essays on their learning described art-based sessions …
