Oxidative stress impairs follicular development by inducing granulosa cell (GC) apoptosis, which involves enhancement of the transcriptional activity of the pro-apoptotic factor Forkhead box O1 (FoxO1). However, the mechanism by which oxidative stress promotes FoxO1 activity is still unclear. Here, we found that miR-181a was upregulated in hydrogen peroxide (H
A Critique Of Pope Francis’S Laudato Si’, Nicholas Capaldi
A Critique Of Pope Francis’S Laudato Si’, Nicholas Capaldi
Seattle University Law Review
This is a critique of Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato si’. The author summarizes and examines Pope Francis’s description of the problem, analysis of the roots of the problem, and proposed solution of the problem within the context of the Roman Catholic tradition. The author concludes that the encyclical abandons rigorous argument, as it lists complaints without offering substantive alternatives.
2-D Electrophoresis Modeling Of Multienzyme Cutting Of Polypeptides, Howard Mayes
2-D Electrophoresis Modeling Of Multienzyme Cutting Of Polypeptides, Howard Mayes
Theses
2-Dimensional Electrophoresis is one of the tools in the identification of proteins by molecular weight and pH. The display of molecular weight allows the researcher to quickly identify whether a specific protein or peptide string is in the sample. The pH measurement allows even better resolution between different species in the sample. The MultiEnzyme ElectroPhoresis (MEEP) program tries to model that by providing a graph that displays separated protein strings by both molecular weight and pH. The ability to cleave the protein with 43 different enzyme variations allows the researcher to analyze appropriate enzymes to isolate a protein subsequence before …

Identifying Ecologically Relevant Scales Of Habitat Selection: Diel Habitat Selection In Elk, Caleb P. Roberts, James W. Cain Iii, Robert D. Cox
Identifying Ecologically Relevant Scales Of Habitat Selection: Diel Habitat Selection In Elk, Caleb P. Roberts, James W. Cain Iii, Robert D. Cox
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Although organisms make resource selection decisions at multiple spatiotemporal scales, not all scales are ecologically relevant to any given organism. Ecological patterns and rhythms such as behavioral and climatic patterns may provide a consistent method for identifying ecologically relevant scales of habitat selection. Using elk (Cervus canadensis) as an example species, we sought to test the ability of behavioral patterns to empirically partition diel scales for modeling habitat selection. We used model selection to partition diel scales by shifts in dominant behavior and then used resource selection probability functions to model elk habitat selection hierarchically at diel scales within seasons. …

Social Justice And Capitalism: An Assessment Of The Teachings Of Pope Francis From A Law And Macroeconomics Perspective, Steven A. Ramirez
Social Justice And Capitalism: An Assessment Of The Teachings Of Pope Francis From A Law And Macroeconomics Perspective, Steven A. Ramirez
Seattle University Law Review
The first part of this Article will synthesize the key teachings of Pope Francis from his most important statements on economic structures and social justice and situate these teachings within contemporary economic realities and traditional social justice teachings. Part II of this Article will demonstrate that the Pope’s teachings on social justice fundamentally reflect the best learning from economists on how to sustain economic growth. Part III of this Article will show that nations that undertake policies to pursue the fundamental tenets of the Pope’s teachings (such as minimizing childhood poverty) also perform the best in achieving high human development …

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is a global health threat, compounded by the emergence of drug-resistant strains. A hallmark of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is the formation of hypoxic necrotic granulomas, which upon disintegration, release infectious Mtb. Furthermore, hypoxic necrotic granulomas are associated with increased disease severity and provide a niche for drug-resistant Mtb. However, the host immune responses that promote the development of hypoxic TB granulomas are not well described. Using a necrotic Mtb mouse model, we show that loss of Mtb virulence factors, such as phenolic glycolipids, decreases the production of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-17 (also referred to as IL-17A). IL-17 …

Faculty of Science and Engineering Datasets
Quantification and evaluation of elemental distribution in forested ecosystems are key requirements to understand element fluxes and their relationship with hydrological and biogeochemical processes in the system. However, datasets supporting such a study on the catchment scale are still limited. Here we provide a dataset comprising spatially highly resolved distributions of 39 elements in soil profiles of a small forested headwater catchment in western Germany (http://teodoor.icg.kfa-juelich.de/ibg3searchportal2/dispatch?searchparams=freetext-Wuestebach&metadata.detail.view.id=7d37ae00-20f6-408e-8660-33bfba07c869) to gain a holistic picture of the state and fluxes of elements in the catchment. The elements include both plant nutrients and other metals and metalloids that were predominately derived from lithospheric or anthropogenic …

Conceptualizing Parent Involvement In Child Therapy: A Framework Roles Using Bernard's Discrimination Model, Mi-Hee Jeon
Conceptualizing Parent Involvement In Child Therapy: A Framework Roles Using Bernard's Discrimination Model, Mi-Hee Jeon
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
This paper introduces a theoretical map conceptualizing parent involvement in the child counseling process by applying the roles from Bernard’s Discrimination Model (DM). Semi-structured interviews with experts in child counseling and copyrighted DVDs were collected as data. A framework approach through the DM is utilized to analyze data to offer the conceptual structure of parent involvement. As a result, the three different roles—counselor, teacher, and consultant—and tasks for each role when engaging parents for child counseling are identified. Discussions about the meaning and limitations of this study are included.
Facing Our Racial Biases Via The Implicit Association Test, Stacey A. Peterson
Facing Our Racial Biases Via The Implicit Association Test, Stacey A. Peterson
Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD
Classroom discussions around race and difference are often difficult and challenging. We all come to our social interactions as products of our cultural selves, race being one of a myriad of multi-faceted characteristics. Therefore, while many feel that race is something that is discussed ad nauseam, others feel that such discussions rarely scratch the surface. This exercise uses the Implicit Association Test on race to encourage students to reflect upon and examine their hidden biases and address the role those biases play in potential communicative interactions, decisions, actions, and even emotions that they, the students, likely have of people of …

Explaining Theory-Guided Research Through The Big Bang Theory, Brittnie Peck, Scott Christen, Stephanie Kelly
Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD
The Big Bang Theory is a comedy aired on CBS that features the lives of a group of scientists. Like many people, the characters in this show find it difficult to avoid taking their work home with them. Thus, most episodes are rich with research terminology and demonstrations. This paper details an activity that provides a fun means of introducing students to the role of theory in guiding research through the use of The Big Bang Theory.
Interpersonal Rhetoric: An Approach To Bettering Oneself And Others, Anthony M. Wachs
Interpersonal Rhetoric: An Approach To Bettering Oneself And Others, Anthony M. Wachs
Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD
Although interpersonal interaction is predominantly studied through the lens of communication studies, the field was originally studied primarily by scholars of rhetoric. Though this paradigm was instrumental in the founding of interpersonal communication, interpersonal rhetoric has largely been ignored by the discipline. However, throughout the last few decades, a few scholars have attempted to reinvigorate the study of interpersonal communication through the lens of rhetoric. This paper explores the several key concepts and perspectives within the history of the rhetorical approach to interpersonal communication, i.e., interpersonal rhetoric.
Abundance Of Insects Inhabiting The Male Strobili Of Red Pine, William J. Mattson
Abundance Of Insects Inhabiting The Male Strobili Of Red Pine, William J. Mattson
The Great Lakes Entomologist
(excerpt)
Southwood (1973) concluded that pollen feeding was probably the first step in the development of the phytophagous habit in insects, because pollen, compared with plant foliage, is rich in nutrients and low in sewndary defense substances. Surprisingly, little is known about insects that feed mainly on pollen. For example, in a bibliography of insects that feed on reproductive structures of North American conifers (Barcia and Merkel, 1972), less than three per cent of 719 references pertained to pollen feeders. This note reports on the kinds and abundance of insects found inhabiting clusters of fresh staminate or male strobili (MS) …

Heptageniidae (Ephemeroptera) Of Wisconsin, R. Wills Flowers, William L. Hilsenhoff
The Great Lakes Entomologist
(excerpt)
Heptageniidae are one of the most abundant and widespread components of Wisconsin's aquatic insect fauna. In almost any stream with a firm substrate and free of gross pollution, the flattened nymphs can be found hiding in crevasses and under rocks, or clinging to submerged wood. Adults and nymphs are easily distinguished from mayflies of other families, nymphs by their dorsoventrally flattened head and dorsal eyes, and adults by their 5-segmented tarsi and complete wing veination. This paper presents our knowledge to date of Heptageniidae in Wisconsin.
Pesticide Effects On Orthopteroid Distribution In Southern Michigan Farmlands, Benedict C. Pinkowski
Pesticide Effects On Orthopteroid Distribution In Southern Michigan Farmlands, Benedict C. Pinkowski
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The occulrence and abundance of 22 species of orthopteroids is compared for isolated farm yards surrounded by corn fields which were either treated or not treated with a pesticide combination consisting of the herbicides Sutan and AAtrex, and the insecticide Dyfonate. All 22 species were present in the untreated plots, whereas only 12 were recorded in the treated plots, a 45.5% reduction.
Species characteristics determining the observed differences, in the order of decreasing importance, are: general abundance in non-treated areas, seasonal periodism, and vagility. More common species and fewer uncommon species were present in the treated areas, apparently because of …

Notes On The Biology And Parasitoids Of The Sweet Fern Underwing (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) In Michigan, Louis F. Wilson
The Great Lakes Entomologist
(excerpt)
The sweet fern underwing, Catocala antinympha (Hubner), sometimes called "the wayward nymph" (Holland, 1968), is one of several lepidopterous defoliators of sweet fern, Comptonia peregrina (L.) Coult. Investigators have dealt only briefly with this insect because it is difficult to collect and rear in quantity and consequently, its biology is poorly known. The early works are basically taxonomic treatises. Barnes and McDunnough (1918b) updated the synonomy which remains intact to date. They placed antinympha as belonging to their Group IV (Catabapta Hulst), a group comprising Myrica (=Comptonia) feeders. Their treatise presents excellent color reproductions of the adult …

Spatial Distribution Of Egg Clusters Of The European Pine Sawfly Neodiprion Sertifer (Geoff.) In Young Pine Plantations In Michigan, Louis F. Wilson
The Great Lakes Entomologist
(excerpt)
The European pine sawfly, Neodiprion sertifer (Geoffroy), is a perennial problem in young pine plantations in Eastern North America. Scotch pine, Pinus sylvestris L., and red pine, P. resinom Ait., are its principal hosts. During recent behavioral studies of this sawfly in Michigan, spatial distribution patterns were determined in order to rapidly survey population levels in young pine plantations (Wilson and Gerrard, 1971). Earlier, Lyons (1964b) presented some distributional data on N. sertifer in regard to population sampling. Wright et al. (1967) and Hattemer et al. (1969) discussed N. sertifer distributions in Scotch pine and mixed pine species provenancz …
Spatial And Seasonal Distribution Of Pine Root Collar Weevil Eggs In Young Red Pine Plantations, Louis F. Wilson
Spatial And Seasonal Distribution Of Pine Root Collar Weevil Eggs In Young Red Pine Plantations, Louis F. Wilson
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The pine root collar weevil (Hylobius radicis Buchanan) is a continuous threat to young pine plantations in the northeastern United States and the adjacent Canadian Provinces The female weevil oviposits during the daytime (Wilson, 1968a) near the root collars of red pine (Pinus resinosa Aiton), Scotch pine (P. sylvestris L.), and jack pine (P. hanksiana Lambert), and occasionally other pines. During recent studies on the weevil (Wilson 1968a, 1968b) in Michigan, egg data were taken for use in population and sampling research. Presented here are distribution patterns of eggs within and between trees and throughout the …

Current Classification Of The Families Of Coleoptera, M G. De Viedma, M L. Nelson
The Great Lakes Entomologist
(excerpt)
Several works on the order Coleoptera have appeared in recent years, some of them creating new superfamilies, others modifying the constitution of these or creating new families, finally others are genera1 revisions of the order. The authors believe that the current classification of this order, incorporating these changes would prove useful. The following outline is based mainly on Crowson (1960, 1964, 1966, 1967, 1971, 1972, 1973) and Crowson and Viedma (1964). For characters used on classification see Viedma (1972) and for family synonyms Abdullah (1969). Major features of this conspectus are the rejection of the two sections of Adephaga …
New Techniques For Associating The Stages Of Aquatic Insects, A. V. Provonsha, W P. Mccafferty
New Techniques For Associating The Stages Of Aquatic Insects, A. V. Provonsha, W P. Mccafferty
The Great Lakes Entomologist
(excerpt)
The immature forms of many benthic insect species are presently either undescribed or unidentifiable. The result is that associations with corresponding adult forms are often necessary in order to confirm specific and sometimes generic identifications. Specific determination of aquatic stages of insects is prerequisite to adequately understanding the various aspects and implications of autecological specificity and the synecological dynamics of an aquatic system. Wiggins (1966), among others, has adequately pointed out the basic necessity of being able to discriminate between immature aquatic species.

The great majority of specimens, over 12,000 out of 13,185, which form the basis of this study, were collected by the writer during the flight season of the summer of 1963. These are on deposit in the Museum of the Department of Entomology, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. Other specimens in the collections of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Indianapolis, Indiana, of Purdue, and of Earlham College, Richmond, Indiana are incorporated herein. Most specimens in the latter museum were collected, some by the writer, during an earlier general insect survey of the Whitewater River watershed.
